Pretty happy with the 1000/50 with Aussie BB and I've looked at all the other major players to see if I can save some money but no one comes close to offering equivalent from what I can see.

    • +47

Been with Aussie for a few years on FTTN. Literally got FTTP 1000/50 installed 2 weeks ago. I wish existing loyal customers would get some of these promos for a change :(

      • +56

Loyalty means nothing. Gotta keep jumping ship to be new to get the discounts.

Aussie > Superloop > and now Australia Post…

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/740946

$103.95 for 1000/50 for 6 months. Been on for a few days now and happy with it. Getting 650+ consistently and was changed over in 5 minutes without issue.

        • +9

I work from home and solid Internet is critical for me, otherwise I'd be jumping ship like a rat. This is about the only recurring paid service in my house where I don't do that :(

          • +5

@jje: The top providers, all on FTTP, will all be reliable.

            Recently upgraded myself.

          • +5

            @jje:

I work from home and solid Internet is critical for me

It's all the same internet…. NBN destroyed the idea of genuine competition

            • +1

@1st-Amendment: Peering and how traffic is routed is still provider based. Also how much bandwidth they oversell. I'm on More internet from the CBA offer and it started well. Peak is a nightmare now as I'm assuming they oversold my area. I would go back to Aussie but I signed up for my grandparents so technically I'm not a new customer even though my details are not on the system anymore (visibly in myAussie portal)

          • +5

@jje: i work from home in IT and have FTTP, switched from aussieBB to Superloop and noticed no difference and no downtime.. wait the difference i noticed was the $30 a month saving.. Superloop i get 870 down and 47 up during my work days with more importantly between 3 and 6ms pings over my vpn.

            • +3

@quikstix: I'll check out Superloop, thanks mate.

            • +2

              @quikstix: For Counter Strike?

            • +1

@quikstix: And superloop do provide deals and offers for their existing customers.

          • +2

@jje: i work in IT and WFH as well. cost savings are worth making the jump every 6 months. if you're on FTTP the new service is provisioned on the next port on the router so there's essentially no down time.

            • +1

@Heybargain: Thanks mate, good to know.

            • @Heybargain: What modem/router do you use? Thinking its time for me to jump ship from telstra but realise i need a modem/router

          • @jje: Hi jje, are you referring to the Aus post internet?

        • +1

I'm with More right now, 50% off for 12 months through a staff deal, so 74.50 for 1000/50. Will jump back to ABB when it's up and there's a new deal.

          • @greennick: How’s your experience with more. I was looking to join them as well.

      • +6

You have to play the game. Leave Aussie BB for a minimum of 6 months, wait for a new coupon and join again to get the discount.

        • +15

this is bullshit. Why cant a current customer take advantage of this without leaving ABB. I dont WANT to leave them.. i just want to grab a slightly better deal!

          • +7

@senectus: this is why Im with Launtel, they have the same price for all, amazing service, I have a choice to get free NBN for 3 years but Id rather stay and not mess up with it, stable net is worth $$ you pay

          • +2

@senectus: Because they already have your business and are mainly interested in new customers.

          • +3

@senectus: nbn started the 6 month discounts and used to subsidize ISPs for new signups.

          • +2

@senectus: It’s not actually bullshit. They just wanna increase their average revenue per customer over time to show their shareholders that it’s a company worth investing in. Who better to increase it with than an existing customer who knows how reliable they are in general.

I’d be frustrated as a customer nonetheless that I need to keep jumping. But that’s the trade off I am willing to make to ensure my average internet bill never exceeds $X.

        • +1

Launtel >> Aussie BB >> Launtel >> Aussie BB.

          The cycle continues.

      • +2

call up aussie and ask to be transferred to their retention team, mention another provider with their offer, and aussie should be able to give you a 6 month discount

        • +4

          They usually don't

        • This, but no need to mention "retention team", its just number 4 at the 2nd prompt. You can get this rate, or at least I as able to. YMMV

          • +4

@Gojkins: Thanks for the tip!! got $20 off on 1000/50 connection , was talking to nice Nathan …cheers

            • @Kooratz: nice one! I've been meaning to call them too, will do in a few days

        • +3

I also called last month mentioning about competition offering discounts for 6 months and asked whether they could do the same. To my surprise, he thanked me for being a loyal customer and matched the discounts but gave it to me for 12 months!

        • I just called them to see if they could extend the offer to me and they said no sadly.

          • @Bluto Mindpretzel: out of interest, what plan/monthly cost are you on? I wonder if people on the higher cost plans have a better chance?

            • @FeZZa21: 1000/50 so am on a higher price plan.

              • @Bluto Mindpretzel: ah same, will give them a try tomorrow

                • @FeZZa21: Good luck. Let us know how you get on and who you spoke to. The person I spoke with was Amanda.

                  • @Bluto Mindpretzel: thanks, I'll ensure I don't speak to Amanda lol

                  • @Bluto Mindpretzel: Just called up and got a dude, he said he can't match the $20 off for 12 months but can do it for 6 months, said yes please and thanks :)

                    • @FeZZa21: Daym. Ok so I called again and was more persistent. I got a guy this time who had to go to his manager to ask, then came back with a no, so I mentioned that there are cases where others have gotten the discount, so he went to the sales team, and eventually back with a no again. He did say it's subject to a number of things, like length of customer. On that note I only signed up about 3 months ago, but it would be weird if you can get the offer if a) long time customer, b) brand new customer, but only not for recent customers!

Just to clarify, what option are you choosing on the phone? I have been choosing option 1) Existing customer, and 3) Something regarding my account.

Not sure if I could be bothered trying again, but good to know what you more fortunate folks are choosing in order to potentially help others.

                      • @Bluto Mindpretzel: Option 1, option 4 (this is important).
All you say: CBA and More are offering you 1000/50 $104.30/Month and you are planning to switch but just want to check what Aussie can offer you to stay. They will apologies that they cannot offer what More and CBA are, but can give you $20 off for 6 months. You disappointingly agree for them to apply this discount while you will still have to discuss it with your partner and consider switching to More.

                        Adjust as you like.

                        • @Gojkins: Cheers, thanks. Good for next year as I have just switched to Leaptel who have a policy of offering promotions to existing customers who had not accessed a promotion in the last year, which is already one better than Aussie. Apart from this, Aussie had been fantastic. See you all again in a year.

                      • @Bluto Mindpretzel: Ok kinds makes sense as I've been with Aussie for just over a year

      • I randomly got a free upgrade to gigabit (from 100mbps) for 6 months with aussie

      • What's the cost to get FTTP installed?

        • +1

Nothing, for me, I just called up once I realised it was available and two NBN engineer visits later I was up and running.

          • @Twix: No love for HFC

            • +2

@ShouldIBuyIt: Fill this out to get a HFC to FTTP quote. Installation can cost a bit.

              • +4

                @Twix: $17k. Bloody disgrace NBN

                • @ShouldIBuyIt:

                  $17k. Bloody disgrace NBN

                  But think of your neighbours.
Once you pay for the upgrade to get it to your street all of them will have a much cheaper quote.

(just did a quote for a laugh - mine would cost $18,902)

                  • @Grunntt: If you really want Fibre and are working from home and your not in an area where NBNCO are upgrading everyone from FTTN to FTTP you can order NBNEE Enterprise Ethernet which will give you 1GBPS Symmetrical both the same speed up and down for a simple monthly price with no setup fees.
This is on a 4 year contract typically and all you need is an ABN number.
Also not all NBN providers are the same as the amount of Fibre each provider has in the ground and the network providers all vary.
Plus the amount of CVC available varies as well.
With NBNEE NBN gives you a Service level agreement with that as well the standard restoration period is 12 hours but with the Gold SLA you can get that down to two hours.
Though NBNCo are upgrading most areas to FTTP now so if you log a ticket with your provider they should be able to do something.
If not email [email protected] and if you've got a business I can get you a quote for NBN either NBNEE or Small Business.

                • @ShouldIBuyIt:

                  $17k. Bloody disgrace NBN

Paying for things you want with your own money is disgraceful now? Does the world 'entitled' mean anything to you?

Launtel charge per day - $4.10 for 1000/50 works out to be $124.70 per month. Been with them for a while and they’ve always been really good.

      • +1

How did you manage to get 1000/50 for $4.10 a day? I just checked my dashboard and it says 1000/50 is $4.60 a day :(

        • Same, he's either confused or they do regional pricing.

          • -1

@Cineaste: I’m not regional but on an Opticomm service so that may impact the pricing but it’s definitely $4.10 for my area.

        • im getting 4.6 a day too

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: 4.10 was the "pre-order" price they had a while ago when they were just starting out in a new area. They basically had 10% off from their usual pricing.

            • @azukay: all good - pretty cool they have the flexibility, but if you're not switching down, the overall full month use price is not too dissimilar to aussie BB… might give this a go just so I can churn out and churn back in

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: It is actually really good for a holiday house or airBnb since you can also pause whenever you want.

      • +1

the best thing is that you dont need 1000 mgs dl every day, with Launtel you change to high speed for the day you need it then go back to slow ones for the rest of the week.
We shouldn't be advertising them, dont want too many ppl on the network to spoil the service :)

      • Someone with Launtel!!! If you don't mind me ask. My father in law wants the NBN at his holiday home and I suggested Launtel without having ever tried it.

Is it suitable for that set up? They home gets used infrequently by the family, can be used for 3 weeks and then not used for 2-3 months and then used for 2 weeks etc.

Is it just as simple as only paying for the days you use it ?

        • +2

yes, should be, just pause it in the dashboard and resume when you want.
You pre pay though so you would load up $100 and each day you use they deduct per day charge, if you pause they wont charge , no plans etc

        • Just check with them on Whirlpool. I seem to remember someone doing that, but NBN did something because they had their service disconnected/paused for too long.

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/3yzy2wk9

        • Yes it is offical list on launtel page: https://launtel.net.au/residential/

Hit the pause button whenever you like, then don’t pay a cent

Your control panel allows you to manage your service with as much freedom as possible:

Pause your service and don’t pay for those days
Start your service again when you want to use it
Upgrade to a faster service to get that big download done faster
Downgrade your service when you’re spending more time outside

        • What is the technology used for the NBN connection at the holiday home?

With Launtel you can 'pause' the connection however using FTTN I don't think this is advisable or recommended, there is a lower cost 'standby' connection that can be used to ensure your FTTN connection isn't disconnected but it's not 'free'.

        • Did this exact thing at my folks holiday house and it has been brilliant. You just top it up like a prepaid phone, unpause it when you want to use it and it draws down on the funds in the account, then pause it when no one’s there.
They’re on FTTN and absolutely no issues, highly recommend.

    • +1

      More for 30% less….

    • -3

My Republic is much cheaper and I get > 600mbps anytime throughout the day. It was also voted number 1 on whistleout

      • -1

Can only recommend MR to people that enjoy hurting themselves. If you are not in that category, run. You'll thank me later.

        • -1

Lol why? They just use the NBN network as any other provider.
Aussie broadband may be a little faster but much more expensive too.

On the customer service side, who needs it? Once it works it works. Anyway I tried most of them and can just suggest to save some $$$ but up to you

          • -1

@ValouSydney: Exactly this, customer service. Until you need it! I had a painful install and a few outages. Every time it was over an hour to talk to someone, endless hand offs. When it's working it was fine, you're correct, but when it isn't… Pain, lots of pain.

    • Im frustrated as I just went through them and only got $120 off….

1000/50 is bloody fast though, would have stayed with TPG if they offered that.

  • -7

Finally, something comparable in speed to what we had in Europe for $10 a month 15 years ago…

    • U going back?

      • +5

Maybe just for a short time, to download the whole of the internet and bring it on a USB stick… I am not paying $130 a month here for sure.

    • u really got 1 gigabit for equivalent 10 aud 15 years ago?

      • +5

One could get it for $5 for sure (with slower speeds) but I wanted to fork out and get something faster.

Here is some indication of the current pricing.

        https://www.atlasandboots.com/remote-work/countries-with-the…

        ALL:
I wonder what's with the negs? National pride has been injured? It's just the facts, Australian internet is priced ridiculously high.

        • +3

It's just the facts, Australian internet is priced ridiculously high.

And the reasons why are well understood, but you can't mention them here otherwise you get down-voted to oblivion…

          • +2

@1st-Amendment: A bit of an oystrich policy really, people try to close their eyes to any critisism of the system, “Speak a good word or remain silent” or else I should just go back to where I came from, as per stockastics above. Nice one, will get us to improve a lot.

          • @1st-Amendment: On the price of bandwidth in Australia its come down heaps from say 10 years ago. I am paying 7 Cents a gig for my businesses content delivery services where as a few years ago it was 30 Cents or more. Also the costs of bandwidth at colocation facilities are much better hence why we have so many US companies in Australia now, the pricing is much closer to Singapore pricing.
Still high but not as bad as it was.

        • -2

As the bogans would say- go back to where you came from..

          • +2

@stockastics: Yep, I got that, would you like to say it to me face to face? Happy to meet in Brisbane.

    • Gigabit internet, $10, 15 years ago,right.

      • +2

Wouldn't say 15 years ago but probably 10yrs ago 18euro for gigabit was definitely a thing in parts of Europe.

        • -2

I just had a quick look at UK broadband prices and it's <£30 for 100mbps

Yes Australia is slow there is nothing about national pride here. Slow and expensive internet are what we have - it's a fact. But 1000mbps in UK for $10/month 15 years ago, you serious brah?

    • -3

I'll take BS for $1500 Trebek

    • +1

Europe is a big place, anywhere from a wartorn hole, to Romania and say Malta. A small island chain nation with a densely packed population. Ukraine and Romania are cheap, but would you want to live in either of them? Malta is just as expensive as Australia, with just as terrible internet, worse even in upload speeds, and they don't have the excuse we do of distance. It's almost as if wages and the cost of living are linked somehow?

      • I will partially agree but it is an oversimplification in my opinion. It is funny how the "cost of living" works in mystereous ways. Food is often more expensive in "cheap" parts of Europe than it is in Australia, although the wages are much lower.

But the internet does not cost anything to produce. Where is the labour in its cost to the customer? Sure, one needs infrastructure (creation of which is not really ongoing) and its maintanance, but it is a fracture of the margin.

        • Some of it is greed. What ever the market will bear. Everything costs more though, transport, wages etc. NBN as a company has costs. ISPs have costs. It's more expensive here than in a cheap SEA country to do those things.

Economies of scale play a part in keeping costs down, as does competition. NBN has no competition, but if it did, then we'd have everyone offering great internet in the CBD and apartment complexes, and almost nothing farther out.

I guess we could leave that to Starlink? Although Starlink will never make a profit, and it's still outrageously expensive. Better than nothing for some.
