Great games if you havent played them before. Heck even if you have, worth a playthrough if its been a few years.

Be warned - the cake is a lie.

    • +12

Yep, not only two of the best games of all time, but still two of the best games you can play in 2022, despite their age.

Since this is OzBargain, though: just be aware that the PC versions of Portal 1 and 2 are frequently on sale for less than $2 each on steam.

Don't have a gaming PC? Want to play using a controller? No problem, they work well with any old console controllers you have lying around (in addition to mouse and keyboard), and don't need a proper/modern gaming PC to play, so any old laptop or whatever you have (even a Mac) is enough to play them.

So just keep in mind you're playing an extra $15 Nintendo tax to play it on the go (which to some people is worth it).

      • +3

Fair call out on the Switch tax. Though I hope everyone on Ozbargain is well aware of it now.

      • Ive only got a Switch and no other gaming experience - and also have a Mac M1 - would Steam work on that for this game and others?

        • +2

Only half helping you but the M1s are very powerful and run the old x86 Mac games through a compatability layer (Rosetta 2?). So yes it will "work."

As for performance, I can't comment on how that goes but I hear quite well and my guess for these ~ 10 year old games is it should eat them for breakfast. Probably wouldn't expect much out of anything released in the last 5 years (except for 2D games).

          • +1

@pcchristie: Yeah my info is out of date.

Buying Portal 1 or 2 on steam used to let you download a mac or PC version, but it looks like the mac version ran on the older x86 macs, and your latest macs use the new Apple M1 CPU.

There are still ways to do it, but not as straightforward as it used to be:

            • +2

@ItsMeAgro: Thankyou both. I think i'll stick to paying the switch premium and leave my mac for work!

      • Played it on the PS3 back in the day. Played it on PC recently with a controller… I don't remember it being so hard to aim… But I also am 13 years older so…

Portal with RTX releases tomorrow. I know what I'm doing this weekend.

  • What was the original price?

    • +2

It says $28 if you click the link

      • -8

Sure, but that requires clicking the link, would be quicker if the answer were in the title, like every other post ever posted.

  • -1

seems perfect for the switch as well - would be great on a flight or on the toilet lol

  • +4

    Oh man.. best game ever!
Wish they'd bring it over to PS5

  • +1

Finally bit the bullet and purchased this game. First time trying it out - keen!

    • +7

So jealous. I loved it. I wish they did a 3 but Valve don't like that number much.

  • +4

I'm heading to Japan (almost 12 hours on flights not including layovers, one-way) in a week and have been searching for a few games to get on the switch prior. I've never played portal before. Reviews everywhere look great. It's friggen expensive compared to other platforms but it seems it was only released recently on switch, and it's a bundle of 1 and 2… bit the bullet.

Paid $15 + 375 gold coins. Got 75 gold coins back.

    Thanks OP!

I expect alongside Golf Club Wasteland it should maintain enough of my attention and pair nicely with my Bose QC 45's

    • Are you flying from Perth?
I thought it only took about 8 hours from Melbourne…

      • Radelaide via SYD direct to HND.

SYD to HND is 9H50M there, 9H55M back

    • How do you find the QC45s?
When flying, Bose QC45 support page mentions "choosing a seat further away from the engines"

      • I've been happy with the QC45's at home, but take with a grain of salt as they are my first NC headphones.

Regarding the plane use I'm happy to report back here… but it's always advisable not to sit near the wing area, as yes that is the loudest part of the plane (since the engines are literally a few metres away from your seat).
I'd say that's more of a disclaimer than something to worry about, as I haven't heard many complaints about people flying with them (which are some of the reviews I watched)

        • No issue on the plane. They're great

    • Buy Factorio. They will have to drag you off the plane. You will wish you were flying to Heathrow instead.

      • One of my colleagues did recommend that actually…. will keep in mind, thanks!

  • +1

10GB… Glad I just got that 512GB card.

    • any specials on 512?

      • Sandisk Ultra was floating around $62. (Less any cashback or % of gift cards.)

I overheard my two kids (10 and 8) talking the other day about how the games work in switch. They we saying how it's so cool that the games were free but they wished they got to choose them.

They don't know that for several years now I've just been blindly purchasing these from ozbargain and don't even tell them. They just pop up randomly on the device.

    That's pretty cool

    • +2

Yes, I love that. Plus when I get home and when I finally get a chance to jump on the console I see all these games I forgot I bought haha

  • +4

Amazing, absoloutely amazing. I tracked the price of this for 6 months and Nintendo are notorious about very rare discounts.

Picked it up a week ago for $30, argh.

    • I'm spewing as well! Honestly, I was prepared to pay that amount anyway as I don't really care for too many games, and this is one I've always wanted. Still hurts.

I noticed many of the bargain ones in eshop seem to be crappy games. Good thing I googled them first.

      • I did buy an e-shop voucher at 10% off, so it was like $25 - but man I've been watching that price for this, for MONTHS.

        Typical :)

        • What made you pull the plug though? Despair? Lol. I wish they had a Game Pass on Nintendo.

I just got the Switch on black Friday sales, and really wish I'd done it years earlier. Daily Mario Kart and Switch sports would have been so good during lockdown.

          • @housebaratyon: Pulled the plug because 10% off Nintendo cards were on sale, right when I was standing at Woolies buying a 10% off $500 gift card at the same time anyhow.

    • I did the exact same thing :D Frustrating but at least it’s a good game

      • It's great, the Switch port isn't bad either.

I'd much prefer it on my PS5 but alas …………….. sigh? :/
I have it on PS3, PC and Switch now.

  • +2

On switch, the game runs at 1080p docked and 720 handheld both at mostly 60fps.

    Has gyro aiming as well.

Was hoping for a physical release but no news of it. Will buy this instead

  • +1

You talked me into it!!! 😉
(Plus 94 gold points / cents back)

  • The potato sack ARG was so long ago… I'm getting old 😅

  • I heard a lot of great things about this game but never got around to it.

I promised the misses that I will only buy multiplayer games on the Switch because it's a family time console. Can this game be multiplayer? Thanks!

    • +2

Portal 2 had a two player coop that was surprisingly good

      • +3

        Portal 1 is singleplayer-only.

Portal 2 has a coop mode that has its own mini-story, separate from the main singleplayer-only story.

  • +1

Thanks for sharing, I will purchase this :-)

  • +4

This was a triumph… I'm making a note here, huge success.

  • Why is this only on Switch? :(

  • wish it was on ps4 instead, why does Nintendo mostly get physical releases?

    • The audience for the switch is much different from ps4. I would wager the switch audience is much more likely to repurchase portal of otherwise be previously unaware of it, unlike ps4 owners

  • +2

Crazy to think the "still alive" DLC for Portal 1 is still exclusive to Xbox, that Valve couldn't put in on this release
    https://www.xbox.com/en-au/games/store/Portal-Still-Alive/BR…

Some of been some weird deal between EA (publisher of Orange Box) MS and Valve.

    • +1

      Never knew about that

Edit: Those 14 new puzzles came from the map pack Portal: The Flash Version developed by We Create Stuff, with no additional story elements

Ha ha but I did play and finish the flash game, that's a blast from the past!

    • Is this content any good and has anyone ported it back to PC?
