At these prices Im thinking that the Mini PCs are better value (especially on sale) even if a bit more expensive.

For me, power usage is a big factor.

      • RPI4 idle = 4W. Load with 4 cores = 6W
        MeLe idle = 5W. Load = 17W

For basic usage the power difference will be negligible, I can't see them being under load for typical projects.

        • MeLe is around ~$100 more up front, unless I'm missing something (I'm pretty unfamiliar, that was a quick google)

          • +3

@jbird84: ~$60 more and it's packaged, plug it into a monitor. For different use cases, the MeLe makes a lot more sense. If your application is a little more bespoke, the RPI makes more sense (GPIO for example). Horses for courses.

    • At the $160 mark you also have recycled Xeon kits (CPU+Mobo+Memory).

That said, it really depends what you're using it for, and your personal requirements in terms of compute power, power consumption (E5-2670 is like 120W at full load.), form factor, whether or not you actually use the GPIO…

Also recent deals on somerthing like
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/743567

      Idle - 10w or less.
(About 9$ per watt per year of 24x7 power)

+1, these units can add a lot more RAM and some with NVMe slots which keeps the unit useful for much longer in the long term.

        • Would that be safe to run 24/7?
also whats the non idle power consumption?

I'm looking for a windows device to run programs on 24/7 that wont destroy my electricity bill, because I'm currently using my main computer which is a power hungry thing

edit: just bought this one which is has a 500gb ssd https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/284839154992

          • +2

@ihuntbargains: Yes mine has been running 24/7 for many years. Running on SSD means it's much more reliable than SD card, in addition to the faster speed.

The non idle power consumption level depends on what you are running and how many external USB devices are attached. At full load this can pull ~60 watts.

For home use the CPU utilisation would likely stay low most of the time unless you are doing Plex transcoding or something of that nature. Home assistant by itself needs very little CPU resources.

My setup records two camera feeds (the main incremental power consumption), routing, home assistant, pi-hole, etc and CPU utilisation is less than 10% (I estimate 12-15W).

              @CoronavirusVaccine: Ok great.
I'm just going to be using to run a few simple programs. Nothing that should require to to consume a lot of power.
Good to know it can run 24/7 without issues.
Farm better than running my gaming/work pc 24/7.

Yeah these prices are pretty crazy for what you're getting…

    • +2

yep, i ended up picking up a 7500t optiplex. tiny, wicked fast, perfect for what i need it for, plus it's silent and power consumption is very low.

    • +1

lately i've been using old intel celery nucs which are about 20-60 each for projects. THey do burn more power but that can be mitigated.

      these days pi==rip

      • What do you do for GPIO?

        • esp32wroom32 and voltage level shifter

  • After 7 months I was finally able to grab two, thanks OP!!!

  • yep already picked one up got the email from jaycar early morning :D

    finally !!!!

    • I didn’t get an email! Luckily I saw this post. Finally!

  • FML, miss out everytime they're in stock for 5mins.

Used my last one for a project for work. May as well just get work to pay me out rather than having them replace it.

  • how long does Jaycar usually take to ship?

    • I ordered something from them, they shipped the same day and I received it the following day. This may depend on individual stores though as it came from the closest store to me, not from a warehouse.

      • ok they still havent shiped it still says status in "in progress"

        • Same here. Order still showing “in progress”

  • I have moved on from these to the Rock 5B.
