Thanks, I really wanted that bookmark. Added the m.2 drive so I can save 6% on it!

    • +2

Thanks OP. Have been waiting for a storage upgrade for my PS5 and finally pulled the trigger. Now just waiting for a 7th Jan delivery, so Its like a delayed christmas present. 🎄

And a small thanks to Solid for the bookmark tip. Saved me some $, which I used for a heatsink and got a bookmark too. 😃

Just to note amazon estimates are way over at the moment. Something I ordered said it was coming 23rd Dec, but still came 2 days after I ordered so hopefully it will be the same with this.

      • Its almost as if they named it the P5 Plus to sell for extra storage on the PS5!

    • +3

Thanks, brought the order to $243.35 shipped with a "free" bookmark

  • +1

Great SSD, I've had no issue with mine

  • +2

Looking for a fast 2TB NVMe for my PC, this any good?

I've got a 2TB Seagate Firecuda 530 with heatsink in my PS5. This is like $100 less than I paid for that!

    • +2

      absolutely will fit your usecase

    • +1

This would be great for large file transfers, but pretty unnecessary for gaming.

      • Do you have any ideas what would be good for gaming/Steam drive? Cheers

        • +5

If your just using the drive for storing and playing games, then any cheap SSD would work well (Crucial and Kingston are good cheap brands).
You'll just have slower transfer speeds and minimal loading times (about 1-2 seconds difference from higher performance drives)

      • What about directStorage? That will come soon.

  • What's the fastest ssd out there right now?

    • +6

Samsung 990 Pro, WD SN850X, Sk Hynix Platinum P41, Kingston KC3000, Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus, HP FX900 roughly in that order. These drives all trade blows with each other (see here)

      • Where's the Seagate Firecuda 530? The Crucial P5 Plus is there and I believe the 530 is better

      • I think the sabrant rocket outperforms all and equals the wd sn850x…. but these were benchmark tests. Real world applications vary but are only seperated by split seconds (which you won't notice really).
At the time of those tests, the samsung 990 pro wasn't on the market. I'd add a link but forget which youtuber it was.
(From current reviews, i think the samsung 990 pro is the fastest atm)

  • Oh lord. Paid $329 for an 2tb 990 pro today from Samsung' website.

    • That's good isn't it? I paid $345 for a Seagate Firecuda 530 a couple of months ago. It's in my PS5 now

    • That is still a decent deal, this drive worked out to $243.35 shipped with the bookmark trick. The 990 Pro is one of the fastest drives available

    • I think that's better SSD.

  • Would this need a heatsink in a PC?

    • +4

Doubt it, most models run fine in PCs with decent ventilation and I haven't seen anyone complain that this drive in particular runs hot. If it is an issue, you can just order a heat sink for $20 at a later date

  • +1

Any heatsink people recommend to go with this one for PS5?

  • Great thanks OP!

  • I have a Gigabyte B560M, and a Intel Core i7-10700F, meaning my pc only has one NVMe M.2 SSD slot available.

I have bought this to upgrade from my current Kingston A2000 500 GB.

What are some solutions to only having one slot?
I assume I need an adaptor, clone my current ssd, then switch the SSD sticks, using the Crucial for my OS and the Kingston as extra memory?

    • I'm in a similar situation… have a AM4 5700X with a Asus rog B550-A mobo. I can use 1 stick on the cpu lanes, but if i use a second on the south-bridge which has 4×lanes, i'd lose out on my wi-fi card which runs at 1× (which i need due to unable to use ethernet cable to router).
My advice it get the biggest M.2 drive you can afford due to being limited to 1

      • +2

That doesn't sound right? Your second M.2 slot only shares bandwidth with the SATA5 and SATA6 ports.

You do lose out on the three PCI-E 1x slots if you operate the second full-length PCI-E slot in 4x mode, yes, but that's only relevant if you wanted to run a third M.2 SSD presumably.

    • Yeah, that's pretty much it. But your options depend on your specific model of motherboard. For example, I see the B560M DS3H only has one full-length PCI-E slot, so your only option in this case would be to get a M.2 to USB adapter/enclosure such as this one. Start with the Crucial in it, clone the contents of the Kingston to it, then swap over, format the Kingston, and in the end you simply have it as a glorified USB stick.

If you have something the slightly higher end B560M Aorus Elite instead, you have access to a full-length PCI-E slot, which operates at 4x, i.e. the same as an ordinary Gen3 M.2 slot. If this is the case, you can use a PCI-E to M.2 adapter like this and have both SSDs installed internally. The Crucial will be slightly hampered by running at Gen3 speeds instead of Gen4, but given the price it's probably worth the temporary sacrifice, assuming you then move it to whatever your next PC will be.

      • Thanks, it is a B560M DS3H. I thought i copied that part.
I could clone it for convenience, but doing a fresh install be better optimization or what not wise?

        • Yeah, if you can be bothered investing the extra time to doing a clean install and setting up everything fresh, then go ahead. Do create a new installation USB stick with the Media Creation Tool to make sure you have a recent build of Windows to install, which massively cuts down on the amount of manual updates that will need to be done after the installation.

You may want to consider just carving out a smallish Windows partition on the new drive to make this step easier in the future, something like 200-300GB would be plenty, or even smaller if you move your Documents/Downloads/etc folders onto another partition.

          • @mystarey: I was going to wipe it of all none essentials in either case.
Would freah install make much of a difference vs cloning in final result?

            • @KhevaKins: Not as much impact as it would have had in previous editions of Windows, since modern ones are reasonably good at keeping themselves trim. For a 500GB drive I'd be fairly comfortable with the amount of backups I'd need to do to keep the stuff I wanted. Lots of other variables of course, like how old the existing installation is, whether you've got any weird unexplained software quirks built up, etc.

That's the main argument for creating the smaller Windows partition in the first place, as nuking the entire contents of a 2TB monolithic partition is logistically a lot more inconvenient, regardless of whether you've saved its contents to a backup drive or if you're re-downloading it fresh.

  • +2

Note this drive is best for single user use (desktop, PS5 after adding heat sink)

It has latency issues with enterprise/database workloads as seen in the review from StorageReview

For those use cases, better to use the 980 Pro or SN850(X)

  • Is this better than the msi one?

  • Anyone point getting and sticking this in PCI 3 slot? I only one PCI 4 slot and it's being used for windows drive.

    • +2

Well at this price it's cheaper than buying a high-end Gen3 drive (such as the Samsung 970 Evo Plus or WD SN750) so even though you're not extracting full speed from it for now, it still ends up better value.

Sure this drive isn't better than your existing one though? A simple clone and swap might be the optimal solution.

  • can I use this for a MacBook pro late 2015 model?

  • Anyone can recommend a good heat sink for this that works well with PS5?

    • +1

I haven't used it but keeping my eyes open.

Don't quote me, but I think people use the "EZDIY-FAB M.2 SSD heatsink 2280, Double-Sided Heat Sink, High Performance SSD Radiator for PC / PS5 for PCIE NVME M.2 SSD or SATA M.2 SSD"

      i.e. https://www.amazon.com.au/EZDIY-FAB-heatsink-Double-Sided-Pe…

      • I think all the heatsinks with the higher aluminium fins on top wont allow you to put the cover back on, from the PS5 storage slot. Although it might actually be better giving it more air?

  • Apparently this has 2GBs of DRAM plus decent Pcie 4.0 specs

  • Waiting for the PCIE 5 SSDs to release.

    • Yeah should go well with microsoft's direct or whatever it's called

  • Been watching the 2TB NVMe market for about two years now.
    Finally bought one, thanks OP.
    Absolute no-brainer to get a 980 Pro-equivalent for the price of a 970 Evo Plus-equivalent.

Of course as LTT and all the other benchmarks say, SSD speed doesn't actually matter
    https://youtu.be/4DKLA7w9eeA?t=619

Things may change with MS DirectStorage though

    • Yeah but at this price, it's not 'that much more' than a regular gen 3 - plus it has 2 friggen geebees of DRAM.

  • +1

Bit the bullet as a late Christmas present to myself along with a nice bookmark :)

  • thanks OP, been waiting for a good deal for a 2TB expansion to my PS5.
Now hoping it will get delivered soon

  • Thx op. Got one.

  • Cheers OP! Bought 2.

  • This is the lowest I have seen but apparently, on the 2nd of November, it was down to $199. Is this true, and if it is, does that mean it will ever be that price again?

  • Got one, cheers OP!

  • Am still waiting for the WD SN850X 2TB for $283 from Amazon (early January ). Should I cancel and go with this deal if I don't mind the early January wait?

  • Is this compatible with the ORICO M.2 NVMe/SATA 10Gbps USB-C 3.2 Gen2 Enclosure listed later on? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/744607

  • Price up to $308 now as US version is OOS. Too bad for anyone that didnt grab it. Hopefully be back in stock soon

    • 1 in stock; at time of adding my comment. Edit: 2 left now… and gone.

  • How's everybody going with their p5 plus?

    • Mine's not arriving until Jan 7

  • Got an en email saying that mine is arriving today!
