ORICO M.2 NVMe/SATA 10Gbps USB-C 3.2 Gen2 Enclosure US$10.99 (~A$16.30) Delivered @ Orico Official Store via Aliexpress

1290
CHFH8SWTK26R

Excellent price on this M.2 SSD enclosure that supports both SATA and NVMe SSDs with support for M Key and B&M Key. It has fast read/write speeds thanks to being USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps) and it uses the RTL9210B chipset, which is better than the JMicron chipset used in cheap enclosures and results in slower speeds and more heat.

The case has a metal body with a thermal fin and thermal pad for better heat dissipation. A 30cm USB-C to USB-C cable is included and it supports SSDs up to 4TB. Plus it's half the price of the Ugreen equivalent.

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate, GST inclusive and stacks with cashback.

  • If I won't use it for SATA SSD, do you guys think NVMe+Bag is a better deal?

    • +4

Yep the NVMe only enclosure is still a really good price.

    • +2

$4 for the bag seems too much.

    • +13

Don't buy it, saves yourself $16.30 to buy some food. Big recession is coming, you can't buy food with nvme enclosure.

      • +2

But maybe you can swap enclosure for food.

        • Maybe you can try bite and chew the enclosure, if you close your eyes it feels like chocolate bar.

  • Tempted as I have a 256gb nvme somewhere but i don't ever need anything on usb lol.

    • +1

I'm getting one to keep it on hand for file recovery. If a computer won't boot, I'll pull the drive out, put it in this case and plug it into a different computer to see if it's readable and make a copy of important files before attempting system recovery.

      • +2

Could just boot a live Linux from USB and use that to recover files, saving tinkering with hardware.

        • Not if the host system has failed, but the drive/OS hasn't.

  • For an external storage, is NVME better or a SATA SSD?

    • Nvme is faster.

    • +2

If you are buying a drive, just get a usb SSD like Samsung t7. Less to go wrong.

These enclosures are more for people who already have a spare drive, eg from upgrade.

      • Perfect, thanks

      • But T7 only has 3yr warranty.

      • hey @bargaino can you elaborate on this further? What sort of issues?

I am under the impression that an SSD + enclosure combo would be more flexible, cost effective and offers more redundancy if the chip fails (eg swap out a defective drive or enclosure vs binning the entire external drive like the T7)

        • Yep exactly, there's pros and cons on both sides.

  • Half the price of the ugreen, how is the quality of the brand Orico and Aliexpress?

    • Very good, I wouldn't worry about quality.

    • +3

Half the price because it's CN stock and not AU stock. Ugreen's CN stock enclosure isn't on sale so it's expensive.

Orico and Ugreen are basically the same in quality anyway. I'd argue Orico are better.

  • Fantastic Deal; thank you Sir

  • Thanks!

  • Amateur question. But how do I know which one to get. Sata or NVME?

I’ve got a m2 lying around but dont know how to tell

    • Google the model number on it 👍

    • NVMe normally looks like RAM-wannabe

    • +3

SATA M.2 drives have two notches in the end with the contacts, while NVME M.2 drives have a single notch.

2 Types of M.2 SSDs: SATA and NVMe

    • +1

If you read carefully and Select and buy the model OP recommended (Color: NVMe SATA-Black ) it will work with both M.2 NVMe and SATA.

But you need to select M.2 NVMe/SATA . Refer to the diagram posted by OP in the link towards the end (Add "Color: NVMe SATA <colour>" to the cart )

  • Not working.
"The order amount(excluding shipping fee) is under the minimum spend of this promo code. Please apply another code."

    • Which one did you choose?

      • All of the highlighted items. The price is now 2 cents below the coupon amount. Orders over AU $19.43, price in my cart $19.41.

        • There's your problem. The website currency is set to AUD and that'll fluctuate unlike the USD price that stays the same.

Do you have a card without currency conversion fees? If so set the website currency to USD, have the card linked to PayPal and at checkout when selecting the payment method, click on "See currency options" under the card to bill it in USD. Then you'll get the exchange rate.

The website or letting PayPal do the conversion will be inflated.

          • -6

@Clear: It will not let me apply the coupon code in the cart as the price on the website is below the coupon code price. The site is showing me AU$. Changing to US$ shows me the following coupon conditions:
            "US $7.00
            Orders over US $13.00
            Dec 10, 12:00 AM PT-Dec 18, 11:59 PM PT"
The price is US$12.99 in my cart.
            Color codes: NVMe SATA-Black , NVMe SATA-Blue , NVMe SATA-Silver , NVMe SATA-Pink .
It looks like Aliexpress is applying a "New User Bonus" which is putting the price below the minimum coupon value. I can not remove that new user bonus.
Aliexpress has cost you trust and a sale due to this stupid "bonus".

            • +6

              @nicrankin:

Aliexpress has cost you trust and a sale due to this stupid "bonus

That's uncalled for. Good luck then.

            • @nicrankin: I used a different code and got roughly the same price. It was a few cents different, but I'm assuming that's a variation in currency conversion.

I didn't choose the code, it was just the one that was applied by default after I logged in. I suggest you log in again and see what discount the default code that applied to your account will give you.

Bought 2 from amazon yesterday for $23, 1 day shipping

    • +2

And you're not going to link it? Plus 1 day shipping applies to Sydney only.

      • Oh wow was $23, now $29! https://amzn.asia/d/dHWnPEs

For nvme only I think though so this post is a great deal.

        • I wasn't expecting it to be the same one. At least it'll arrive quicker.

          • @Clear: It's not the same one. His ad specifically states that none of the versions are sata compatible.

        • So you bought 2 for $23 EACH

    • +2

don't just say it, hook us up with URL?

      • The suspense is unbearable.

  • Can anyone confirm if this (or which model) would work with: Intel SSDPEKKF256G7H - 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe 2280. It does my head in trying to work out which ones do what :-)

    • +1

"Color: NVMe-10Gbps-" or "Color: NVMe-SATA" will work.

      • Thanks for the reply. When I search for either of those on Orico, lots of results come up hence my confusion. Wish they would simplify to protocol as I own two enclosures already and neither work! All rather confusing.

  • How I wish I got USB-C port in my PC; any cheap converter from normal USB to USB-C female port?

    • You'd be better off just using a straight A to C cable. Don't need to introduce another point of failure.

      • will not bottleneck write/speed performance?

        • Depends on your PC USB port.
          USB 2.0 480Mbps
USB 3.0 |3.1 | 3.2 usually have 5 Gbs unless its a medium to high end PC

  • +2
    1. Tool-less is handy.
    2. For NVMe 10 Mb/s USB-C is handy if you've got 10 Mb/s USB on your PC.
    3. Dual protocol (NVMe + SATA) can be handy if you've got both sorts of SSDs. Just plug the SSD in and it works.
    4. An external enclosure with separate NVMe and SATA sockets has an old chip in it. New ones can do both.
    5. A metal case and cooling is pointless. USB ports aren't fast enough for this to be a problem.
    6. A transparent case so you can see what SSD is in it would be more handy.
  • A reminder that ssd's are not long term offline storage medium's for backup purposes. Memory degrades after a short time unpowered. You could have total data loss in as little as a year.

    • I'd be doing a warranty return if it was a year or under on the SSD.

Backups are always important and backups of backups 😉

      • offline, unpowered.

Its not a warranty matter. The technology is not designed for short or long term archival. This is not related to total writes etc.

Hard drives are better, cd/blu ray better again, magnetic tape better again.

Cloud based backup where they distribute your data over massive redundant arrays also good. But comes with its own risks re privacy, comoany going bankrupt, etc.

        • cd/blu ray better again = I don't think so. I have had many old CD's with backup data on them fail to read in 2022 "unable to read data".

Personally I recommend copying backups to multiple external Non SSD USB drives as they are cheap these days. Keep one offsite at all times so having x 3 USB Drives ensures this is possible i.e. there is always x1 offsite during rotation. Saves relying on cloud for very large files.

        • Losing data unpowered after less than a year is a faulty drive. You should be getting at least 2 years or more.

          • @Clear: What I mean is DVD's created say 10 years ago can't be read. Most do but not all hence I never trust DVD's even when verified and tested when created back in the day. Have tested the dodgy ones on multiple devices and same issue.

            • @Borg: I wasn't replying to you. Infact I didn't even read your comment haha

              • @Clear: Ah ha…….sorry, thought it was related as it was under my comment but understand now :-)

          • @Clear: I do apologise, but that used to have more truth to it, but absolutely isn't true in very recent times. Like the last few years.

SSD's, particularly modern, cheaper, higher capacity NVME's, are absolutely not designed to be left on the shelf for years on end without degradation/loss. That is not their design intent. It would not be a warranty issue. The SSD will absolutely still work, once reformatted. It's not goin to lose functionality. It's not going to lose endurance.

But there'd be no warranty claim to speak of.

QLC and other forms of "layered" flash can be about 16x more sensitive to degradation from voltage loss than ye olde single layer flash. There is a penalty to shoving exponentially more tiny components into one space that rely on maintaining their electrical state to remember things.

You get speed and density. You lose archival ability. This isn't a problem if you're booting up every few months. It's a huge issue if you're not.

Don't think you can chuck a cheap/old stick in this, and use it for occasional backup / archiving, was the only point being made.

  • Got one of these on a black Friday deal and threw in a gen 3 SSD with read and write both in excess of 1,250MBps/10Gpbs, and I can confirm those speeds are achievable, but you need a source drive that can match or exceed the read speeds. It's an entirely new and awesome problem that I backed up some game files off a SATA SSD to this external drive, and speed was limited by the Sata drive read speed.

    • @foxpants just wondering what brand and model gen 3 ssd you used?

      • I'm not at home to get the specific model number, but off the top of my head SK Hynix SSD 512GB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4

    • Don't use this for backup. See : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13102121/redir

      • Backup in this sense was some steam games to pass the drive to a friend to load them becuase his internet is so slow, agreed on not an appropriate long term backup of anything improtant.

        • Ah yes, sneaker-net

    • Which one did you choose?

  • Any deals recently for 3.5inch enclosures or docks?

Thanks for the deal OP. Purchased this for my NVMEs

  • Got mine for $12.81. Awesome.

  • Code not working for me?

    Is it over?

    • +1

it's still continuing. I just paid $12.81 for mine via PayPal.

      • Thanks. Worked now after entering code manually.

  • +1

Just then, Bought NVMe/Sata applied code, used PayPal to paid in US$ and card conversion —> $15.88 aus

  • +1
    • Specs seems to be good

      Main control: RTL9210B, INIC3639
      Maximum support: 16TB

      Orico only supports 4TB

      • I call bs on the support for 16TB. There's nothing that big in a single NVMe M.2 SSD.

        • What is INIC3639?

          • +1

@utsc: Bridge controller. USB 3.0 to SATA.

  • Got my NVMe only version from the last deal today. It's a bit bigger than I thought it would be. The striped bit at the top is plastic but the smooth bit is aluminium. The heatsink covers a decent amount of space, and the drive is held in with rubber tabs.

Mine has the RTL9210B so it works well.

    • How many days did the shipping take?

      • +1

My last order from Orico was really fast and arrived within 8 Days of order (was lucky). I won't expect this for at least 21 days especially with Christmas period upon us. Their ETA shows as Jan 18th. They do have tracking up to the point of it arriving into Australia and clearing customs. I usually add another 5 days once clearedas Austpost take over and aren't the fastest unless lucky.

      • +1

        2 weeks.

  • None of These Are PCIE ?

    • +1

The term NVMe is used to distinguish between M.2 NVMe (PCIe) and PCIe slot SSDs

      • well the M.2 Drive dosnt quite seem to fit - thickness of the Notch ….

i had gotten confused because i ordered some normal Sata ssd enclosures and they arrived first but the ones from this bargain arrived and ….

  • I think mine is coming today. How the heck is Aliexpress so fast at the moment?

    • They finally figured out that by having faster shipping there's less chance of disputes and money lost. I was impressed when my Singles Day orders were taking 2 weeks.

      • It's pretty awesome. I have something coming from Canada for which I paid $19 USD shipping and $8USD in taxes and its taken 3 weeks to get from Canada to the US, let alone Australia.

    • Mine shows as 2022-12-19 06:30 "SYDNEY, COLLECTED FROM AIRPORT TERMINAL". Not bad and just under 6 days from being shipped.

Now the longer part begins and Australia Post! It does track via Austpost I believe and by removing the AUS part of the original tracking number AUS3xxxxx1514. Mine shows as "Pending" which I expect awaiting item to be received into their systems? Not in a rush so happy even if it does take until 17 Jan but it will arrive before then!

  • Got mine this morning. 8 days. I realised though that I don't have a spare drive to test it with.

  • Damn mine is slooowww. I'm using my old 64gb Steam Deck drive which is supposed to be 300MB/s read and I'm getting 100MB/s.

    • Did you run the exact same CrystalMark test? 1GiB and 5 runs? Are you using USB-C or A to C? Is it a USB 3.0 (3.1 Gen1) or Gen 2 port?

      • Nah unfortunately I have no other device that can take my 2230 SSD, and no other m.2 SSds so I have no way to A/B it.
Yeah using a Thunderbolt 3 port on my Macbook.
All good - hoping it's just the drive!
