Xbox Series S $399 Delivered/ in Limited Stores/ C&C @ Target

1340

idk if Target just didn't get the memo that Black Friday is over or if they don't care, but the Series S is still showing as 399 for me for pickup and home order.

If you want my thoughts on why Series S is the best deal in current gen gaming, see my previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/735527

In short,

  1. Go buy a cheap 256(ish) gig USB for around 30 odd bucks (or shop deals for less), use that for your Xbox One / 360 / OG stuff
This, combined with the 364gb of useable storage, will give you more than my PS5 has, 364gb is survivable, but almost doubling it for so little money is good call, I'm personally rocking this one for my ROMs, runs perfect and is so tiny you genuinely don't notice it https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07857Y17V/ref=twister_B078VKF4…
  2. Go buy another one and use it for PS2 ROMs, and download the XBSX2 emulator from gamr13.github.io, it runs a fucking treat
The PS2 emulator genuinely runs better than my proper back compat PS3, and when using CHDMAN (Google it), 256gb will give you 100s of games
  3. Go get some cheap Game Pass from Eneba or whatever

Call it a day

Last month or so I've burned through Force Unleashed, Ultimate Spider-Man, Vice City Stories for the first time in years, Tony Hawk 4, and have played a fair bit of AFL 05 and OutRun 06.

Meanwhile on current gen I've played Fortnite and 10 minutes of the new Lego Star Wars on Game Pass.

      • I was playing 2006 FIFA World Cup on the Xbox 360.

Games don't actually age if you don't care about graphics.

      People still play street fighter

      • +2

Better yet, play your old stuff in 4K via the aforementioned emulator! Best of both worlds!

        • -2

play your old stuff in 4K

Except that the Series S is 2K…

          Need the X for 4K

          • +4

@spackbace: Series S can output in 4K, including but not limited to the emulators.

Many games, I guess I should say several games, output in 4K on the S. As do all the media apps and whatnot that support it.

            • -1

              @TheDukeOfNukem: https://www.windowscentral.com/does-xbox-series-s-support-4k…

The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no. The Xbox Series S isn't as powerful as its more expensive sibling, and doesn't try to accomplish true 4K gaming in most games. The affordable console instead targets 1440p (or QHD) at up to 120FPS. However, players with 4K TVs can still enjoy 4K media streaming, and the Xbox Series S will upscale games to 4K to fit the confines of your television.

Upscaled to 4K is not 4K native, and shouln't be called 4K

              • @spackbace: I'm not saying the S will do 4K a lot of the time. Or even once in a month. But it caaaan do it. And that's key, bc the emulators support it. MVG was running the PS1 emulator two years ago on his S in 4K fine. It also runs above 1080p on the Xbox One S which supposedly could never happen (and also happened with Doom 64). My comment there is specifically about the emulators.

Don't buy an S for 4K gaming beyond emulation though. But at 1080, it's a baller.

              • +1

@spackbace: There are a few games that run at native 4K on the Series S. So yes the Series S can output at 4K and can run a few games natively.

      • Does anyone still play Pong though?

      • My Streetfighter II CE cab is in my sons room. Despite having modern consoles he loves it.

    • +3

The last generation where the full game was on the disc and more stringent QA because once the game was on the shelves, there's virtually no way to patch them.

    • Funny enough you can emulate just about any retro console on Series S and X. including PS1 and PS2 and so on. Great console for emulation!

I think a better price point for these consoles would be around $250 as they're now over 2 years old. I remember purchasing my Xbox One S for sub $200.

    • +2

Can you remind me why the world was different back then?

    • First off, the One S didn't come out until well after the Xbox One was 2 y/o

Second, I got my Xbox One in mid 2016, about 2.5 years post release. I paid I think 279, ballpark, for the console, Minecraft on disc, and a lil game download token where I could pick from the 4 games on there. That was a reasonable deal at the time.

Third, The Xbox One retailed for 600, then got a price cut after the thing stopped needing Kinect. By virtue of the S coming out after this, you'd be buying after an official price drop, which is yet to happen obviously.

    • Seriously? How about $100 and a year of gamepass?

  • Looks like they got Series X in stock too for those still in need

  • If only I can play Genshin Impact on Xbox

    • It really is interesting how genshin isn't on xbox or switch. Guess Sony got a hold of them early and had them sign some exclusivity agreement.

      • +2

And then threw a tantrum because MS dared to buy Activision Blizzard.

      • Genshin was supposed to come to Switch, pretty sure Nintendo announced it a while ago, just you can probably imagine why it still isn't released on it.

  • +3

If you know what you're getting in to, the Series S with Game Pass is a bargain.

Wouldn't recommend if you always after the latest games on launch.

  • -1

Note that the S is only 4K upscaled, need to go to the X for 4K native

    • This console is 1080p only to my understanding

  • +4

    This is the best console.

    • -5

      Big brain energy

    • +4

Just a cheap PC at an affordable price

  • +6

series S is the best value in gaming. $399 in 2022 gets you a case, power supply and peripherals, let alone the rest of the PC.

  • -4

Xbox one x is way better.

    • I agree. In every concievable way short of price and size, the X is better.

At 400 though, I'd honestly rather buy 2 Series S units than one X at 750. One for the bedroom, one for the lounge room.

      • +2

Ive had a series S for 2 years.

it's much faster than my one X, crazy fast storage.

fortnite, apex, cod, overwatch, rocket league etc. all 1080p 120hz.

silent console too, One X I suspect won't be getting games in 2-3 years time either

        • +4

lmao, I'm a (profanity). I thought he said Series X

Take back everything I said. Series S is the MUCH better buy.

          • +7

@TheDukeOfNukem: It is not your fault. MS has the shittiest naming convention for the consoles. What a nightmare for a parent trying to buy a console for xmas.

      • +2

X was 599 with AmEx deal for Microsoft store. I'd rather get one X and enjoy 4k/120hz in AAA

        • Same, and also for the disc drive (to play prev gen games).

      • That person said the One X, not the Series X. The One X is a previous generation console, the Series S is better than it in pretty much every conceivable way apart from resolution of some One X Optimized games.

    • One x is better graphically. Just it has a 8 core jaguar mobile cpu and a mechical HDD in it LOL

      • No it's not. It's a previous generation console without any of the next gen graphical features.

        • The one x has a better graphics card with more TFLOPS.

It can do 4k, unlike the series s derp.

          • @Griffindinho: It doesn't have a better graphics card, it just has more TFLOPS on paper - which is pretty irrelevant when comparing different architecture GPUs. The GPU in the Series S is far more capable than that in the One X, and the CPU is generations ahead. The One X can push higher resolutions, but worse graphics with less bells and whistles. It's like a PS2 in 1080p vs a PS3 in 720p - the PS3 is still the better graphics.

            • @MrFunSocks: One x can still do native 4k while the series s can’t. No matter how much you want to spin it. The architecture is newer yes, but can’t do 4k since the GPU is limited.

Series X is the better investment.

              • @Griffindinho: And the One X can't do raytracing or any of the new GPU/CPU/SSD features and functionalities, can it? No, because it's old tech.

Did you even read my post? I specifically explained why resolution is not the be all and end all. The Series S is a much better console than the One X, especially since 99% of games don't run at 4k on the One X anyway.

The Series X is twice the price of the Series S and plays the same games. If you're playing on a 1080p tv the series S is the better investment.

                • @MrFunSocks: I know what you mean series s is a better console for its specific purposes. Newer architecture and better CPU with SSD drive. It’s lacking in graphics (for next gen), memory and a Blu Ray Drive.

Series x is a better investment since it also includes a hard drive and the ability to play 4k60 in most games with some up to 120fps. You’re confined to digital games only which are normally 25-40% more. Doesn’t matter if you have a 1080p tv, since it supports supersampling to improve the picture.

Also that’s bullshit saying 99% of games capable with one x aren’t native 4k.

                  • @Griffindinho:

Also that’s bullshit saying 99% of games capable with one x aren’t native 4k.

Only games that received a One X specific patch with 4K native support play at native 4K on the One X. Out of the thousands of games on the Xbox One, it's not bullshit to say probably only about 1% received a patch. Pretty much no games >12 months old at release of the One X got one.

If you've got a 1080p tv then your tv likely doesn't support 120hz/fps, making that irrelevant.

Babes, bullets, bombs. Damn – I love this job

  • Been wanting one for a while and I think in all the years I've gamed, this is the closest I've been to getting an Xbox because it's just compact, it's great value (esp at this price) and based on reviews, it runs games really well even if it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the big boys.

I would jump on this deal but the only exclusive I want to play is Starfield (and the Forza games) and I want to see if Starfield ends up being any good, otherwise I like the PS exclusive lines up more (GOT, Spiderman 2, Horizon etc). I don't game as much nowadays so my base PS4 does the job but it's clearly getting to the end of line with it struggling to run some of the more graphically intensive games.

  • We are at a time in tech that we can do so much with what we've got. I'm fortunate to have a work laptop that I can use with Xbox game pass and hook up a couple of ps4 controllers and stream fairly recent (if not recent) games from a super cheap monthly cost. Mind you the streaming sometimes takes a hit and goes from high quality to what looks like one of those acrylic drip paintings.

Ozb saving of $399 - monthly xbgp ($3)

    • I've been looking to get into game streaming vs a new console. Is it really $8 a month to stream their catalogue of games??

Good deal but.. does anyone else think that consoles are on the precipice of being redundant?

VR is better in most ways, however the graphics are currently much poorer. This should change.

    • +2

Wanna show me some sales figures of Consoles vs VR?

      VR isn't overtaking anytime soon.

      • My sales figure is 500. As in I got 500 for selling my PSVR and PS4 a few years back to a guy on Gumtree

    • Nope.

    • Yeah you can get better graphics on vr, just hook up your quest to a $$$ pc gaming rig and then it doesn't become that great a deal compared to a console.

Vr too niche and not better in most ways for many people (nausea, space requirements, convenience, limited game styles).

      • Not sure that VR is niche as such, it's a new and rapidly growing area. Doubt it will be niche once it peaks.

It's much more realistic, immersive and can involve the whole body. Experiences like flying can be boring on a console, but exhilarating on VR. Agree that nausea in particular is an issue, and unsure if the tech can be improved to overcome this.

        • +1

I'm on vr almost every night. Love it for the reasons you point out. I've bought heaps of games but only keeping coming back to a handful of games.

Of the 6 gamers I know who have a headset, I'm the only one who still uses mine. It's got a long way to go to reach the level of console adoption.

  • The moment ATVI transaction goes through, im getting an Xbox with game pass.

Watching my 17yr old son playing Wii sports with my 8yr old Nephew (his cousin) on the Original Wii console modded 14 years ago, it’s still as much fun as it was Xmas 16 years ago.

    • I played guitar heroes at Chrismas parties.

    • My original Wii also gets a regular workout at home with my 5yo son.

Will sports and sports resort are our 2 favourites

Looks like a great deal. Does anyone know if there's a way I can still play my old 360 games on this even though there's no disc slot? cheers

    • Digitally. Many are Backwards compatible. That's it.

      • So I've got to buy a digital copy and all old disks are useless? ):

        • This has no disc drive.

My Xbox collection is mainly physical titles and facing a similar dilemma where I want to update but can't justify the extra cost for a Series X.

  • Good find, got one!

  • "idk if Target just didn't get the memo that Black Friday is over or if they don't care, but the Series S is still showing as 399 for me for pickup and home order."

In the US/UK I believe it's also $50 off from now until Christmas.

Thanks OP. Just got JB to price match. Unplanned birthday present for my daughter. Paid with gift cards. $339!

    • Hells yeah!

Lucky her, mine is rocking my old One S. Was tempted to buy another Series, but she only really plays a lil bit of Fall Guys, Roblox, Minecraft, etc. the odd match of Fortnite with me, not really necessary.

  • +2

(profanity). I bought another Series S, boys. :'(

  • Thanks, mate. I returned the one I got 1 month ago for $479 from bigw :( (I know $20 off is not a bargain at all) and got one from target. Very happy the difference can get me another controller!

  • Now showing as $459.

  • Still showing $399 on Amazon

  • Just got myself an Xmas present. Thanks mate.
