Nvidia Kills Off GameStream Feature On Shield Devices

    https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-kills-off-gamestrea…

    • +3

Hugely anti-consumer move, to also then have the nerve to suggest GeForce Now.

    • +1

Absolutely insane. Completely removes any value this thing has (for me) over alternative devices. I don't care about GeForce Now, I care about GameStream. Other devices can do almost everything this one can, now. Plus they can do HDR10+ which this can't.

    • +1

Yikes. Would this affect Moonlight? I can't say for certain but pretty sure it utilises the PC-end, which they haven't said will be removed? Optimistic of me, sure. But I have hope the open source alternative will get us through.

[Edit] They've already put a page up on this very topic: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-docs/wiki/NVID…

      • +2

I believe there's Sunlight which is an open source server thing so hopefully that takes off. Nvidia are scum.

        • +1

Yep was just reading about that. Thank god for the community. Dick move by Nvidia, they keep pulling this anti-consumer shit and it's not cool. When it comes time to renew my card, I might have to try changing teams.

    • this is very anti-consumer. However, have you tried steam-link? this seems to work well for me and their not pulling the plug on this anytime soon

      • Moonlight/Gamestream and Steam Link are night and day. The latency on Steam link is intolerable, can't do it.

    • This is insane, thank God for the development behind Sunlight.

    • +2

      wat

      • -2

Yep, going to use mini PC as a tv box. Shield struggles with some features.

        • +3

          OK. You do that.

Couldn't think of anything more cumbersome.

          • @scuderiarmani: Cumbersome? Do you carry your TV box around a lot? Besides, some mini PCs are really tiny.

            • +1

@Musiclover: My wife and 5yo daughter would like to watch TV too.

I'm not gonna babysit them everytime they wanna watch TV's.

Can think of a 100 reasons why I wouldn't use something like that for everyday use.

Cumbersome doesn't relate to carrying…. I dgaf about the size. It's the interface, cec, power usage, low maintenance…. Much cheaper…

              • -5

@scuderiarmani: So the problem is not that it's bulky any more, now it's the user interface? Really, your wife and a 5 yo can not operate a video player? Well in that case you need to babyseat them with Shield too. Because the user interface is just about the same. What prevents you from running Kodi on Windows? Or even android app for that matter.

                • @Musiclover: I never said it was bulky. Stop making up a story to suit.

Are you that outta touch that some people don't care for technology and just wanna press a remote and watch YouTube Kids with no hassles at all?

Don't try and pretend a Windows PC is not cumbersone compared to a dedicated media player….

                  • @scuderiarmani: There's hundreds of media players in Windows (unlike Android). You can make it as simple or as complex as you wish. You can run Android on windows if you wish. Can you run Windows on Shield?
Youtube kids is available in browser.
It seems that you are just protecting your baby (Shield). I am a Shield owner too. It is good, but lacks flexibility and sometimes it's frustrating. Windows mini PC has flexibility. For the same price. What's too lose?
By the way, just a sidenote. I would not trust a 5 yo with freely selecting what (and when) she can watch. There is plenty of crappy children cartoons.

                    • @Musiclover: YouTube Kids and Kayo in a browser is not user friendly for non tech people.

You do you. I'll worry about my family.

Plex also lost their traditional App in Windows.

I have zero need and interest in file management in a streaming device. I have a Plex server for my media.

                      • @scuderiarmani: Non tech people? Whats the meaning of that in the context of clicking a couple of buttons on a screen? No one is expecting users to hack, do software engeneering or modify drivers… Again: you can still run android apps in Windows.

Mini PC is so much more than just a streaming device.

Also, can you not run Kayo and Youtibe apps on just about any modern smart TV anyway?.. Without the need of any TV boxes.

About kids - sorry if I sounded patronising, just a bit frustrated about so many media addicted kids who grow into shallow people. I would not trust my 4 year old with a TV remote knowing how to use it, she would be watching crap all day every day.

                        • @Musiclover: Why on earth am I justifying my position to you?

A HTPC is not at all user friendly compared to a Shield. End of Story.

Most people have NFI what Kodi is.

Im sure my parents would love it if I removed their Google TV device and replaced it with a PC LOL.

I can't wait for the 100 phone calls about how to fix mundane things.

And please don't tell me how to raise my daughter. She's perfectly able to browse YouTube Kids and access appropriate content. It also has easy parental controls.

If anything access to a Browser is a million times worse for a 5yo kid.

                          • @scuderiarmani: I don't know why you are here and started this discussion, wouldn't be able to answer that for you. All I said was that Android has its limitations even as a media straming device only.
You attacked my position saying that it's cumbersome. Well, its not. You can run the same android apps that you are used to on Windows. Zero difference in user interface. Not that I am going to do it anyway, I am happy with Windows software.
Kids argument - you do what you want, you can trust your child education to youtube kids, I am sure it's all very politically correct there, no violence etc. I am old school, so absolute minimum of carefully selected cartoons which I deem fit, under my spervision, maximum books, sports and outside.
But why do you think that if I do not trust youtube kids that I am going to trust my child with a browser? As for you and if you like youtube kids so much (and would not want to install app for whatever reason) - children can watch it in a browser without any ads for free and with full parental controls. Windows and google have settings for that.

                            • @Musiclover: I, like tonnes of people here, are subscribed to YouTube Premium with a VPN.

We don't need to stuff around with ad blocking. Especially when it's rumoured those methods may not work shortly anyway.

Wanna know now a Shield Works? You press the power button. Seconds later you are on a screen with every app.

                              Windows. Is. Not. User. Friendly.

                              • -1

@scuderiarmani: Well, let's agree that people are different. Maybe after bombardment with youtube kids anything more than one click is not user friendly.

                                • @Musiclover: Yeah ok, nice childish insult to my 5yo daughter there….. cause she's obviously only capable of using 1 click in your eyes. Guess I should give up parenting.

Pretty average she's not at your level, able to setup a Kodi app by herself and bypass Youtube Ads.

I have met no one who would prefer to use a HTPC with Apps and a Browser over a Media Player or Inbuilt TV Apps.

                                  • -1

@scuderiarmani: That's your opinion of your daughter above not mine. Me personally - pretty sure anyone can do more than one click.

                                    • @Musiclover: 'Biggest question is how they will work with remote under Windows.'

Yeah. Sounds ideal for people who wanna sit on a couch and tune out.

My 5yo daughter is more than capable of using the Shield. I'd argue it'd be a hugely irresponsible parent giving her access to a Browser in Windows.

I know an insult when I see one. I think I'll just ignore you.

                                      • -1

@scuderiarmani: Thanks for the announcement that you are leaving insulted and for your valuable opinion. Without it, I wouldn't be able to figure out what I wanted to do with my TV box.

        • +1

i'd love to know what features are missing from the shield?

we moved from a HTPC to the shield and it's a significantly better experience than the PC ever was

          • -1

@jztilly: Everyone will have their own list. I have to say though, I am not just watching movies on it. It is a proper media centre with a big screen.
One example: is a high res sound (in movies and music). Android is not capable of sending that through USB without up or down sampling with very poor control of what is happening. So, if I have a movie with high res sound it is just downsampled to std res. I even purchased a USB Audio player to overcome that but there are plenty of limitations and glitches.
Even simple tasks like file handling could be problematic under Android. Again, purchased a file manager, but it is not as good as a free Windows one.
In Windows its so easy to get rid of youtube ads. But not in Android…
            And the list goes on.

Sure, if you do something simple like watching some movies not caring about quality too much - its maybe easier with Shield. But I just don't see what's hard in clicking on a file or starting a media player in Windows. Just a couple of clicks.

And, if you are so used to Android - you can still run Android apps in Windows, but not the other way around!

            • @Musiclover:

Sure, if you do something simple like watching some movies not caring about quality too much

Lol isn’t that the whole point? We watch bluray remuxes with truehd + atmos tracks and it’s flawless on the shield. Supports all the uncompressed codecs which other players (like appletv) fail to stream. Plex supports all the file formats, you get nice art and a great interface that’s family friendly. Even when we had the HTPC, we never used a mouse unless something broke. Sounds the like furthest thing from east but that’s just me!

All our media is on a server so any management is done on that. I reckon trying to manage media on a television sounds like a nightmare haha

  • Only worth $200 now .

    • +2

      Says who?

      • Anyone who uses GameStream.

        • +1

So Gamestream has a monetary value of $68?

          • @scuderiarmani: Arguably has a monetary value of $268 minus whatever the next best competing product is.

      • +1

        Me .

  • +2

Wireless1 has it for $247.50 with code boxing
