The pivoting head has 3 positions, allowing you to trim in tricky spots (such as under hedges, beneath decks, and around garden furniture).

The guard has an adjustable cutting width of 25 or 30cm, offering great versatility for cutting grass and weeds. The tool auto-feeds the trimming line, so there’s no need to bump the head. This 18V battery-powered line trimmer is suited to light-to-medium grass. It runs for up to 25 minutes on a 2.5Ah ONE+ battery or up to 50 minutes on a 5.0Ah ONE+ battery.

  • Thanks OP, perfect for my dad.

      whip me harder, daddy!

  • +1

Got this in a bundle years ago but the motor burned out after a couple of sessions. They refused to take return of item by itself as it came as part of a bundle. Ryobi refused to help as well just sent me to a shop that also refused to take it, too cheap to repair apparently. So it became landwaste very quickly. Just be aware it's for light duty use only.

    • +1

yeah. hence my comment reasonably maintained. I see so many people chopping knee high grass with ozito and ryobi cheap trimmers. That will definitely cook a motor. Horses for courses mate. Also keep the vents clear of debris and work slowly. If the tool feels underpowered, you need to spend more money and buy the next model up with brushless motor.

      • I've been using mine for 10 years and it's still absolutely fine ! Only used for grass stuff though.

      • hence my comment reasonably maintained.

Agree. I've had mine for years and hasn't skipped a beat. These battery mowers and trimmers are designed for light use, so if you use them as intended they work very well.

      • Disabled OP you probably cant reply the comments. I am sure you read this thread though. Anyway, any good discount for this polisher?

    • +1

      wow really? mines completely fine.
      not even light use.

they have extended warranty now too!

    • +2

They refused to take return of item by itself as it came as part of a bundle.

Yeah that's not how this works. ACCC / Fair trading / VCAT time etc.

    • +1

That’s not how it works. Did you not register the tools when you purchased them?

  • How much batteries will cost then if buying it

    • +6

You buy this if you already have batteries.

If you're not already in the Ryobi ecosystem then don't buy this - buy the kit that comes with everything.

      • Ok, thanks , better wait for next deal

        • If you buy the trimmer + the battery and charger linked, it’s $172 dollars and you have everything you need to get started. The “kit” version is $229. Nearly 25% off for Ryobi is very uncommon!

          • @[Deactivated]: Didn't they used to do the snipper and blower twin pack for like $249 or something ?

            • +1

@Nom: Much better getting the brushless one in a deal. I’ve had both and the brushless one is an amazing. This one was nothing but trouble

      • This plus battary still cheaper than the kit today.
        $70 + $105.< $229.

    • +1

One+ Batteries are more expensive but you can buy the regular ones - pretty sure they are interchangeable. Be prepared to fork over another $139-$150 for a 4AH Battery and Charger and probably a bit more for a proper ONE+ Battery.
Check Bunnings website, but also keep an eye on Total Tools as a comparison. They have a wide range of Ryobi as well. It’s great for me because Total Tools and Bunnings are about 500 metres apart 😆🤣.

Starter kits often come with one battery and charger, so a tool only discount doesn’t look so good if you don’t have batteries. Do your research, try not to impulse buy.

As others have said battery trimmers don’t have a heap of power.

Personally I have a 2stroke Petrol Honda trimmer, edger, brush cutter because I wasted so much money on electric ones before Li-Ion tools hit the market.

My Honda is a beast and it’s just the domestic version. Local council have the pro versions so - have to pick the right tool for the job and get as much advice as you can, good luck!

@ThemDealz what line cord do you recommend?

I have been banging my head 😁 with the Ryobi version that came with my trimmer

    • +2

The powerfit stuff from Bunnings is good. Get the 2.0mm with the inner core. Ryobi also has some of its premium precut spools I have used before with good luck, just a bit pricey, but you pay for the convenience of swapping in a cartridge.

      • +1

@ThemDealz Bunnings seems to only have 2x Powerfit 2.0mm line cords: https://www.bunnings.com.au/search/products?q=powerfit+2.0mm…
        Which one to get?

        • +1

          Aren’t they just different lengths?

        • +1

they are just different lengths. get 15m and make sure you are happy with it before getting 50m

        • What they said… just a different length. Good cord makes a heap of difference. 15m should get you a few refills a reckon.

Ryobi have their own line now, but it’s more expensive. Almost $20 for just over 15M. It doesn’t say it’s compatible, but it is, you just need to cut it to length.

  • any deal on Ryobi batteries?

  • Do the blades need replacing? If yes can you get them cheap on eBay like Ozito? Considering this instead of Ozito deal below.

You can buy a blade head or use the cartridge here
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-2mm-whisper-series-trimmer…

Blade head sold seperate but seems to be hit or miss. It seems like if you are trimming against a hard surface like a fence or driveway, you shouldn’t use a blade head as they can break or pop off.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-flailing-blade-head_p03476…

      • Seems expensive as you can get 50 pack of blades of Ozito for $10 on eBay. Thanks for linking them though.

        • No worries. They sell refill blades. I’ve seen horror stories of eBay blades flying off and hitting things / people. So just a heads up, not worth losing an eye for saving a buck or two if you go that route.

    • What do you mean blades ?

This uses a spool of cable on a reel 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • Ok that's why people are saying "cartridge". I have never mowed or trimmed before and am brand new to this. Thanks for clarification. Need to watch some YouTube videos before I jump into this

        • +1
        • +1

The biggest issue with the blade type is that if you bump into something hard like a tree trunk then the blade just breaks…

The coil of spool is just consumable, it doesn't matter what you hit with it. But obviously the harder workout it gets, the more you'll go through 😁

  • +1

Cheap as chips, so it's hard to complain… however, something to think about is this uses the same cartridge style line spool and matching spool cover as the model that I have.

Some serious design for planned obsolescence has gone into these cheaper models. I was surprised at how quickly the spool cover weathered and broke, leaving the trimmer completely useless until I could find a replacement. Not too expensive, but special order only from Bunning.

The spool also only excepts super-fine line, which it tends to burn through super fast.

    • +1

They carry this one in store. The key is to not rest the head on the ground. They clearly aren’t designed for that.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-36v-replacement-line-t…

They also sell the bigger cord cartridges with good cord and appears to be the same price as the smaller cord.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-2mm-whisper-series-trimmer…

      • Thanks. I wish they'd had available back when my older model's cap failed.

It took me a good ten minutes and the ryobi webpage just to convince my local bunnings staff member in the garden tools section that a "spool cap" was actually a thing.

If ryobi is now bundling the spool and cap together, that makes me doubly convinced that making the spool cap so flimsy is a cynical money-making ploy. 🤔

I might given the 2.0mm inner core line that you mentioned above a go. If it fits, it would have to be an improvement on the flimsy stock 1.6mm line.

        • +1

I'm still on my original cap after 10 years and it's absolutely fine 🤷🏼‍♂️ Were you hitting it into the floor or something during use ?

          • @Nom: 10 years? I'm guessing that was before they realised that they could take a leaf from the printer manufacturers' playbook and make the things flimsy.

There's no point hitting these things on the floor… the line supposedly auto feeds, so no bump feed here. Mine does extremely light duties… it only services a smallish suburban lot so it spends most of its time safely hung away in the shed.

            • -1

@bobbieb: I reckon it boils down to if you rest the head on the ground or hover just above the grass (like the manual states). That would make a huge difference in the wear. I don’t think Ryobi want people returning their stuff for the sake of a $5 part.

              • @[Deactivated]: LOL… brand rep, disabled at that.😂

                That explains the responses.

Pro-tip for wannabe brand reps. "You're holding it wrong" is never a great way to respond to issues.

    • Mines about 5 years old. Original cap and spool. I've never even cleaned the bastard either. Changed the line to a "diamond" shaped one off eBay which seems to work better. About 1.8mm vs the OEM 1.6. works great.

  • +1

Based on the following review and other similar reviews, which is the best option for saving $$$ on consumables OZITO (blades) VS RYOBI (line)

Value for money; but a consumable nightmare.
The machine does a pretty decent job and the battery life is not bad. But the consumables/ the coils, are just ridiculously wasteful. The line seems to use up really quickly (with very normal use), at times a good few cms just sort of fly off (although not often), and then when the coil nears its end, the remnant comes away from the plastic spool, because there is nothing to hold it in place. At that time there is still so much left that can now not be used. So wasteful and expensive over time.

    • Don't even worry about it, the spool of line only costs a few dollars and you can do a LOT of cutting with a single pack. I only buy a new pack every year or so.

  • +2

Returned this after one use. Not powerful enough and feels like a toy. Replaced it with the brushless version that’s double the price. Now it cuts through everything only using half a 5ah battery. With power tools I reckon you just pay extra, works for years and save a lot of time.

    • Thanks for the info, really wanting to know which way to go, can you elaborate for me?

What was the comparison in time saving, half the time?
What was the power difference, twice as powerful?
What other positives, cord types, head, cable usage etc?

      • It depends what you're trying to cut.
I only use mine for lawn edging and path edging etc - it's more than powerful enough.

If you're trying to cut through weeds and undergrowth then it's not going to do the job - but that's not an issue for a "maintained" garden…
I think this is where the stories of high consumable use come from - people are trying to use basic snippers to remove thick undergrowth.

        • Yeah that is what I was thinking also based on reviews and seeing videos of the performance. I'm needing dual purpose, maintained and not.

          • +1

@figarow: Then definitely buy something beefier like the 36v unit 👍
This one is great for grass work.

        • I wanted to get one of these for lawn edging. I'm currently using one of those ozito ones with plastic blades, would you say this Ryobi would be more stronger?

  • +1

Had one for over 5 years for Qld lawns and it’s still going strong. Definitely use half decent cord with it though.

    • What would you recommend for the cord?

  • This or 36v ozito? The skin is 159 at the moment and i have ozito batteries. This with 4ah battery i am looking at around 170 to 180.

  • Do these go on sale at this price often? Not sure I need a line trimmer just yet but if it's a no brainer at this price…or do I wait for some sort of bundle pack?

Need a lawn mower, line trimmer and maybe a blower. Also some batteries.

    • +1

Ryobi never go on sale. That’s why any discount gets posted up here. They have a blower for $99 at the moment which comes with battery and charger.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-cordless-200cfm-je…

Pick up a drill kit with 2 batteries,

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747292

then the top model HP mower skin,

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-40cm-hp-brushless-…

and you have a great setup with 3 batteries mower, drill, line trimmer, blower.

      • Excellent. I was eyeing the 33cm starter bundle but I have like 400-500sqm of lawn to cut but really don't want to go the 36V range. Happy to keep the lawn maintained so prob don't need the extra grunt but 33cm would take forever…

If I had to skimp on something probably the blower? Not that many trees/leaves, would just be grass clippings. Could rake any leaves.

      • Also forgot to ask, is the 18v 40cm lawn mower on sale right now or is that the regular price?

  • My friend just bought a kit for $229 last week. If he buy this and 4.0ah Battery and Charger Combo Kit $105 today, he would save $54.

  • Buy the brushless one, way better.

  • How are these against those Kikuyu roots when trying to do edging??

  • Always wanted a no-oil chainsaw but could not justify buying one. Been eyeing on this Ryobi chainsaw for 6 months and just pulled the plug. Christmas gift to self. Will deal with wife later.

    • +4

FYI All chainsaws need oil for the chain, regardless if its powered by petrol / battery / electric 240v

      • not this one

        • That just means the chain will wear much faster than normal.

A no-oil chainsaw is not desirable - changing the chain is a much bigger deal than pouring oil into the tank !

    • i have been using a ryobi recip saw… not sure if a chainsaw will be a very useful addition…

      • Same here - I have a Ozito PXC recip saw but I am sure I can find a use for this Ryobi oil-less chainsaw.
