          Problem solved.

Before booking a flight to Hawaii I suggest you check accomodation prices.

    • +3

Second this. And do not rely on Airbnb (very unreliable over there, hosts cancel the bookings in the last minute). We didn't have any booking.com reservations cancelled on us though generally they were expensive. Amazing destination nonetheless.

      • AirBnB like anywhere is a gamble, but usually OK if only do superhosts. There are also other private rentals. But yes, it's not cheap.

    • +4

and the 1000 AUD a week car rental.

      • +1

I've been to Hawaii several times, 4 of the islands, and never paid that much. Use discounthawaiicarrental or turo.

    • totally agree. Rooms that were $200 US before Covid are now $500US.

      • bloody crazy right and especially with our shit aus dollar, its fked up.

i always like travelling to hawaii, chilled out country plus stock up on the shopping coz way cheaper than aus but then yeah, shit exchange, expensive hotels, tipping gosh it all adds up and then i just get turned off :(

looking to resort to airbnb just to save on costs but yeah i'd be so scared/worried/frustrated if an airbnb host cancelled on you just before your trip and then you have to try and find some hotel last minute which would be at more exy prices

  • Unclear when sale ends date wise, other than “when sold out”?

    • Any flights back to Mars?

      • How did you come from Mars? Why not use the same service back?

Jetstar does not include a bucket in case of water ‘landing’.

I will never book a Jetstar flight even they are 90% off

    • +11

      Good to know 👍

    • +1

Leaves more for everyone else. Next.

  • Thanks - booked Melbourne to Launceston to visit the father-in-law. Any trips longer via Jetstar and personally I wouldn't use.

  • I can’t decide between Japan or Hawaii!

    • +4

Do a circle it’s under 7hrs and usually under $500 for Japan to Hawaii one way.

      • +1

        interesting suggestion.

Airfares to Hawaii can be odd - I have flown Jetstar to Hawaii and then I went on to San Francisco (and beyond), however what I found was at the time it was cheaper to return via Jetstar to Australia and get a sale fare Aus to California then it was to fly Hawaii to California direct… even though it was domestic USA!! I didn't do that though because of the time lost

        • I often do return to Hawaii then return to LA and split the Hawaii trip in two

        • When you flew to Honolulu and then San Francisco, were you cleared by US immigration once and for your whole trip in Honolulu or again in San Francisco?

  • +9

Oh yay, a Jetstar or Qantas deal….. queue the 400 "I wouldn't fly Jetstar if it was free" and "never again" and anti-Joyce comments……..

maybe we should just have a side link where each new Qantas or Jetstar deal can have a standing gripe forum instead of repeating each time - you know, like product review

  • +1

jetstar - domestic yes, international no way

    • International is great with jetstar

    • +1

I’ve never flown Jetstar internationally. What’s the biggest gripe about it?

      • Compare the national airline of other countries, the service, food and risk of being bumped off your flight is too much of an issue to book with them, i tried Bamboo Airways in Vietnam, was fantastic, its a new airline that flies fr Aust to Vietnam

        • Qantas have countless issues also. Bamboo is a low cost airline and unfortunately you cannot book anything but economy for the Australia route as they dont know what planes they will use until shortly before the flight. This is literally what they told me when i called up which was a deal breaker for me. Hopefully they resolve this in future.

          • @sidoz: Flights within asia with bamboo are good, meals were excellent and more important the service was way better then jetstar, just one of many comparisons you could make

            • @Chicken Kyiv: Yeah agree, but there is little point comparing domestic elsewhere to international here when whilst nice all these things matter less for short durations. Bamboo are still a great option in/out of Australia if all you care about is low cost, no doubt about that. But if you have any further requirements like leg room, better seats etc they fall short until they expand their offering and capability on this route. I was super keen to fly them international but had to go Jetstar as we wanted a little comfort after these past years (quietly praying things improve before we fly in May), and not have it fall to chance which is all Bamboo could offer. I'll be interested again once sort this stuff out though the market needs these challenger brands.

i've always flown jetstar to hawaii, its what a 10 hour flight or whatever and its doable. You pay extra for luggage for shopping, seats aren't that bloody cramped and bring some food on the plane to nibble on or else just pay for them on the flight.

Never had any flights cancelled to hawaii knock on wood so my experience with jetstar has been fine.
Moving forward the wife says coz we have 2 young boys we need to fly qantas coz we need the service and quality, i say same shit different smell with jetstar and you save money with jetstar flights. not like i'm getting a free nanny service if i fly on qantas

        • +1

Same here have always flown Jetstar to Hawaii without any noteworthy issue. Always made sure we had exit rows/upfront etc and honestly still found it a bit of a torture. I will caution however i have read of MANY issues of large delays and cancellations, at times no communication about it as well, this year. I've seen it reported in travel groups dozens of times. Likewise with Qantas. So its definitely not as reliable as it used to be but hopefully they get on top of this stuff soon.

        • +1

          Me too.

Many times I’ve flown Jetstar SYD-HNL return and then picked up a cheap carrier to North America having a few days in Hawaii each way.

Never had a problem. Perhaps things have changed.

(But, like I commented earlier I find Hawaii accomodation prices prohibitive at the moment).

Hoping to do a trip this year, anyone wanna elaborate on why they hate jetstar (keep it short pls)? Is it just last minute cancellations, delays or discomfort during flight? Thanks guys :)

Edit: While you're at it, recommend your favourite airline too

    • +1

There's even a group "Why I hate Jetstar" on FB

    • +1

Last minute cancellation (happened to me recently) & 1.5 hour delays (on the return). I usually book Rex, a bit more but much more reliable.

    • +2

All of the above. I don't hate them, but its very volatile you need to be prepared for anything. Qantas is arguably almost as bad these days too the amount of negative experiences reported on social media daily really on travel and qantas groups shows they dont give a toot about their customers either.

    • My product review. A personal (and very) honest experience. One of thousands:
      https://www.productreview.com.au/reviews/2562a226-b582-5e05-…

I'm just happy we got a bit of notice on the flights Jetstar cancelled on us. All the other troubles we had are just additional nails in the travel coffin.

When we go to Europe next time it's Singapore Airlines (Virgin partner) or nothing. I truly mean what I say in the PR, Jetstar? Never again.

I can't take seriously the Alan Joyce cheerleaders. We have a company here that's so clearly mismanaged and yet this guy is paid millions. There's just absolutely no doubt Jetstar has become rubbish, through and through. The ones who can't see it maybe should try and experience it.

I make it a point never to attack the messenger: Crew, staff and even middle-managers are just trying their best in a difficult situation. But I can't stand the thought of higher-ups in these organisations. I won't support them any more.

I've got enough Qantas points to take me and wifey on a business class RTW trip now. However, it's quite a dent in the achievement that we MUST use Qantas or Jetstar for at least one of the flights. Oneworld airlines are generally good though, it's just Qantas/Jetstar really scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel these days.

    • On your trip be prepared for…..

The bad thing is getting in early morning fatigued and not being able to check in to your hotel.

Early start for return flight back.

I suggest you speak to your hotel about early checkin (they prolly won’t be able to confirm it but ask them to note it) and certainly get them to keep your bags. There might be a shower you could use or shower at the pool and hang there for the morning.

The cheapest are on these weird third party websites that I've never heard of. Are they trustworthy?

    • They are fine, as long as you put the correct details in. Otherwise it'll be a nightmare dealing with them.

      • i agree too, anything where you made a mistake, need to change flight dates or whatever yep chasing a third party is a nightmare

  • Bali deals?

    NZ should be considered domestic

    • +1

Well, I do keep telling people it was part of the Colony of New South Wales. One day they will come home 😂

      • +1

well here I am: a kiwi settled in Oz lol

  • +1

I think my only concern would be getting there and having the return flight cancel on international routes. People might want to consider travel insurance for this one

    • i think its pretty standard people buy travel insurance for any overseas trip

  • I have to admit I'm part of the crowd who's left Jetstar behind until they proved they can pick up their game.

    Here's my product review:

Jetstar = Utter Shit. If this doesn't help sink that in. Nothing will.

  • I booked a Jetstar deal to Phuket 4 months ago for May, they have just told me I no longer have direct flights Mel - Phuket, and now go via Sydney making each trip 25 - 26 hours each way. They are a joke!!

    • Did they give you an offer of a full refund in money ?
