  • Is this physical gift card? How can we use in store?

    • No, the gift card in this deal is a digital prepaid Visa gift card that can be used at merchants using specific Merchant Category Codes (MCCs).

If you want to use it in person, you need to first add it to a supported mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Pay) in the same way you would add any other Visa card to a supported mobile wallet.

    I was hoping for 20%

  • Unfortunately only 20 restaurants including specific Nandos listed in WA. Hope the list is more extensive for other states.

I see you found the list of featured restaurants.

A Blackhawk Network rep recently confirmed that the Restaurant Choice eGift Card is not restricted to specific restaurants, but is now only restricted to specific MCCs. This is also reflected in the gift card terms and conditions:

2.1 Each gift card is a physical stored value card (“Gift Card”) and issued for use as payment (up to the value stored on the Gift Card and prior to the expiry date of the Gift Card) at any restaurant, café, bar or fast food establishment (that falls into a merchant category detailed in Clause 2.5) within Australia that accepts EFTPOS (for physical Gift Cards) or Visa (for Digital eGift Cards) for payment (an “Accepted Merchant”).

The listed restaurants are only featured ones, you can use it any restaurant that accepts Visa :)

you can use it any restaurant that accepts Visa :)

If I were you, I would not use that language for a number of reasons:

        • I went to a cafe one time with a friend who wanted to use a prepaid gift card that could be used at Eating Places and Restaurants (5812). If you look at Visa's definitions of MCCs (page 68), a cafe falls under 5812. The problem is that the cafe we went to actually used Bakeries (5462) as the MCC, because the location with the cafe started out as a bakery and they still function as a bakery with a cafe within it. There was confusion from both my friend and the cafe staff when the prepaid gift card continued being declined by the issuer…

        • I went to a restaurant earlier this year and used a prepaid gift card to pay for my meal without any problems. However, I went back about a month later and when I went to pay using the same type of prepaid gift card (but with a different card number), the EFTPOS machine rejected the card, saying the payment method was blocked.

        • Staff at a restaurant can always refuse a prepaid gift card, as this person found out.

          @WookieMonster & @AustinBlack Thanks for clarifying.

        • +1

Yeah fair enough, I guess I wouldn't consider a bakery a restaurant but I see that could be confusing. Thanks for the advice :)

          • +1

@AustinBlack: That's okay! That's the downside of restricting gift cards based on MCCs: you will have customers caught out by merchants (or really, the merchants' banks) assigning MCCs you would not necessarily expect.

I think it would be better to say you can use it [at] any restaurant that chooses to accept prepaid Visa gift cards. I know, it doesn't sound quite as sexy as your original statement, but you BHN already use that language for the Activ Visa gift cards… at least it is used in the small print!

        • How did you find out the MCC that was used by that cafe/bakery? Called up the prepaid card issuer and asked why it was rejected?

          • @Trance N Dance: My friend paid for the meal using their debit card. When they called the bank that issued the debit card, they told them the MCC for the transaction was for a bakery.

    • The listed restaurants are only featured ones, you can use it any restaurant that accepts Visa :)

  • 40% off again when :D

  • Tells me promo code is invalid

Have been using the recent 15% cards at plenty of places, great feeling knowing you're getting extra savings

    • Same here! 😀Make sure you keep an eye out on 15%/20% discount deals (although it feels like 10% will be the norm)

Note that it really can vary depending on how a business has their terminals set up.

Worked for me at the Cafe within Dreamworld but not the food outlet for example, considering “ Amusement Parks, Circuses, Carnivals and Fortune Tellers (7996)” I thought I would have more luck.

Haven’t had any issues with independent Cafes, or the major Fast Food chains.

A single premises can have multiple MCCs. Visa stipulate the following:

If there are different businesses operating on the same merchant premises, each business must be assigned its own MCC if any of the following apply:

      • It operates under a different merchant name
      • It operates in a distinct area
      • It has separate points of sale.

To me, although the cafe and the food outlet are physically on the grounds of Dreamworld, they should all have separate points of sale, so they really should use an MCC applicable to their business.

I would expect MCC 7996 to be used where you purchase tickets to enter Dreamworld, but I would expect the cafe to use MCC 5812. My guess is that the food outlet uses MCC 5499 (Miscellaneous Food Stores). Of course, all of this assumes the EFTPOS provider used by Dreamworld actually followed Visa's guidelines…

      • +1

Good find, although yeah it really must depending on how closely the guidelines are followed.

Didn’t work for tickets or multiple f/b outlets at Movie World for example so presumably even their ticketing is using a different MCC than 7996.

  • Can these been used for online payments? In my google wallet, I always get an error when trying to enable it for online payment.

    • If it doesnt work through google wallet, putting in the card details manually has always worked for me. (for hungry jacks app for example)
