Homesurf Tablet 8" for $48 (save $160).

If you are after a basic tablet which allow you to connect to wifi and surf the internet, check mails etc, this is a very affordable option. The downside - From one of the reviews, it says you would not be able to download the android apps, not too sure about this as I do not own one, but for a tablet that costs below $50, nothing much to complain I guess.

Limited stocks (In stores only - you can check the stock level online though). Good luck everyone.

This 'Android' devise is not recognised via the android market and therefore you can not download apps directly to the tablet.
The Firmware version is Android 1.6 and there is no support from the manufacturer to upgrade to the latest version.
The inernet connection drops in and out..
If all you want is a tablet that connects to the internet then this devise is for you, but if you want to download any games or books to the tablet - dont bother buying this devise.

Don't waste your time, if you want something for your kids, you are better buying them a dummy phone..

  • Resistive Screen and inability to upgrade OS are the killers for me :( Everything else looked OK for the very limited tasks I need a cheapie Tab for (ie. use in the Kitchen as an interactive recipe book, front door security camera monitor & SONOS controller). Ah well, plenty more decent cheapies just around the corner so no need to rush in. Thanks for posting tho OP!

  • you can't root it and install something useful?

depends if you and your wife want a baby or not ;-)

why spend money buying androids when you can produce your own

Depends if you can create the rom yourself, if nto, I don't imagine there would be any community support.

I reckon it'd make a great bedside alarm clock with the right app. It can probably display weather and news as well, or as mentioned before, it can work great as an IP camera viewer.

  • edit:

wait, this thing runs Donut 1.6? That's ancient.

Don't ring up Werribee, Altona Meadows or Sunshine. They all have none left

You would be better off spending an additional $50 for a tablet that:

    1. Runs Android 4.0+
    2. Has a capacitive touchscreen
    3. Comes with all of the Google apps and the Play Store
    • That would be $50 wasted if you just want a fancy clock that can display weather, news, and stream internet radio. This one even comes with a dock.

  • sure it's cheap, but three more dollars and you get an android 4 device that plugs into your tv http://dx.com/p/mini-android-4-0-network-media-player-w-wi-f…

    • You still need about $50 worth of keyboard, mice and other doohickeys to make that work. It doesn't have a touchscreen.

      • It's a bit inconvenient carrying your TV to your bathroom for your daily morning dump too.

        • lol, not unless a tv already sits on a toilet.

        • lol, I wouldn't be surprised if someone has already thought of mounting a TV in their toilet. The backlash from the wife would be furious.

      • doohickeys?
Isn't that what a girl does to a guy's neck after the first date?

You can use it as a chopping board at night due to the brightness on display.

    • good one. also use it to make fish and chip when it is electrified.

        or in this case.. electrifried

    • Since this tablet is too slow to play "Fruit Ninja" you can have some old-fashioned fun with real fruit and a sharp knife!

  • Would this be better than a digital photo frame?

    • Marginally.

    • If you only want to use it as a photo frame, it's probably better to just get a photo frame. If you wanna play around a bit and display photos, weather, clock, news feeds, stream internet radio, that sorta thing, this would be much better. Just understand that it's a very old tablet, so don't expect it to run everything.

The LCD would probably be the same quality as a $48 photo frame so no difference on that front.
