Hopefully there will be a jailbreak soon - I love XBMC on my ATV2.

    • +3

I got a ATV3 from COTD sales months ago and didn't realise at the time there was no Jailbreak available.. it's been gathering dust waiting as I have only 4 or 5 videos from apple, and a lot of ripped DVD's

      • handbrake dude, convert everything to Mp4 or M4v and load it into itunes. Takes a while, but i love my collection sitting on 1 computer streaming through itunes to the 3 aTV's in the apartment

        • no point in converting 1,000's of videos. I bought Apple TV and couldnt get XMB so instead of waiting i just returned it, bought Boxee and life is sweet now!

        • I just bought mine, seems quiet nice… any suggestions on good converter to convert video files so that AT will play?

    • +2

This would be the only reason I would get the ATV. The day there is a jailbreak announcement, sales of ATV3s will skyrocket.

Apologies, was browsing on my tablet earlier, tried to + your comment but negged it instead. Perhaps some kind person could even it out for my by giving it a + as you can't revoke comment negs.

I've seen this happen a few times now, perhaps a larger space could be put between the + and - so it's not as easy to screw it up on a small touch screen?

        • +1

          done

    • +45

Dude that's a 9 dollar difference…ON OZBARGAIN. I can buy another printer with that kind of money.

      • +1

And if stocks are low get an advanced model instead of the original!!!!!

      • +1

anyone wants the $9 printer? it is still in my office, not opened. I dont even bother taking it home. if you like to pick it up from sydney cbd, let me know.

    • +4

enough with the gross inaccuracies …. it's $109!

But that is also a delivered price so it would suit some people more.

Forget ATV, XBMC is coming to Android. Time to work out which Android based media device to buy now.

    • +2

Thanks for the heads-up on this, brilliant!!!

      • Yeah it's great news, can't wait to give it a try and then look for the "right" box to use it with.

    • +2

The correct answer to this question is OUYA:
      www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-g…

      :-P

      • It does look interesting, need more specs. Hunting.

        • And BOOM! Headshot.
          venturebeat.com/2012/07/14/xbmc-heads-to-android/

    • Huge like +++. Time to offload your $600 HTPC if you have one, it's inevitable that some manufacturer will release a media phone that is designed around XBMC in the next year or so. Apple killer!

      • My intentions were not to take anything away from this post, it's a good price for a decent bit of kit, but I like many others would only be interested if the device could be jailbroken, which at this time it can't be, nor may it ever be going by discussions out there.

For those that ARE interested in XBMC for Android, there's a link to an apk on this site -

        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772433

YMMV at this stage, I haven't tried it yet, don't be surprised if it doesn't work on your device.

There's also some discussion happening over on Whirlpool which will be worth following -

      Wow Foobar.

You have saved me from buying another Apple product - my hero. If it wasnt for trolls like you I might have been damned in hell. But like so many others here. You have to spoil someone else's party so you can feel great yourself.

Why is it that trolls like to do this. Maybe they have nothing else to do, when you do get your toy, for a price that compares, maybe it will keep you busy and away from here.

      • +4

… you're accusing ME of trolling? Read your own post again, maybe after you've calmed down a bit, and then decide who's the troll.

Many people buy the ATV to use XBMC on, this is not currently nor may it ever be possible with the ATV3.

The news about XBMC for Android came out yesterday and the purpose of my post was to alert anyone that may be considering an ATV3 in the hope of an eventual jailbreak for it that there will soon be a far better alternative that requires no messing around - it doesn't even require root access to the device.

If this had been a post for any other type of media player other than ATV (WDTV, Astone, whatever), I wouldn't have said anything. XBMC is VERY relevant to many that purchase ATV devices making the news of XMBC for Android entirely relevant and welcomed by most.

        • foobar

To me it seems like you've got a little confused here.

Agree Maryrose may be a little hot under the collar, but you say that many people buy the ATV to use XBMC on.

Given that the original poster never mentioned XBMC, why did you bring this up.

You also say many people buy the ATV to use XBMC. I guess you know more than many, as Apple hasn't even released sales figures. Now if sales had dropped off you might have one of the reasons, if not how many of the ATV3 buyers do you know out of the total, so you can validate what appears to be an opinion.

Granted while that XBMC isnt yet on the ATV, and no one even raised this point before your post where you conveniently promoted your solution, it gets fairly close to trolling.

So you got a reaction, and you infer that the reaction is trolling. Have a look at your own actions first please.

We have enough bargains around here for people to share. We dont like Apple people in Android threads, likewise Android in Apple treads, all they both do is start whirlpool like hate, which for a sharing place like this, its counter productive.

They wont change your mind and you wont theirs

There have been three iterations of the ATV going back as far as 2007 when the first version shipped. Both the ATV1 and ATV2 could be jailbroken and unofficall apps run on them - the most notable being XBMC - which makes the device so much more than what it is OOTB.

The ATV3 (this one) has not yet been unlocked, so nothing other than what it ships with can be run on it presently. From discussions out there, it at present seems unlikely that it will be broken, but that could change overnight, who knows.

Some people may not realise that this is an ATV3 as outwardly, the appearance of the ATV3 is identical to that of an ATV2 which can be jailbroken. I'm sure many people have unknowingly purchased the the ATV3 believing it was a 2 only to be thoroughly disappointed to find out they couldn't jailbreak it.

I know of at least 10 people with ATV's (none with the new v3) and every single one of them got it so they could jailbreak it and use XMBC on it. I'm not an Apple hater, I have an ATV2 and use it quite regularly, but not the way apple intended, and it's a great device. I have hope for the ATV3, if they do break it I might even get one, but for those searching for an XMBC device, the ATV3 is a very poor choice right now, and with XMBC coming to Android, well, that can only be a good thing.

It wasn't until after I had read what you posted that I realised the apple/android dilemma, thus the suspected troll. I assure you that the nature of my first post was purely informational for those looking for an XBMC device, absolutely nothing to do with apple/android at all. It also makes me understand why that other user reacted the way they did.

I've had an ATV2 for a couple of years now, but only recently (within the last month) got my first Android device. I have some old nokia 6300 POS phone, never had anything flasher than that. With this in mind, I've been an Apple fan far longer than I have been an Android one.

          Anything else?

        • +5

In foobar's defence, I for one am glad for his comment re: XBMC on Android.

I have been missing the benchmark GUI that XBMC set years ago on the original Xbox, and have watched it improve over the years to what it is today - simply the best user interface on any media centre, bar none. The Apple TV 1 and 2 are able to run this 'homebrew' media centre, and have kept it alive in the modern age. Unfortunately, and we'll probably never know why, Apple have locked down their cheapest device, the Apple TV 3, and have prevented it from running XBMC.

Many people now buy an Apple TV to run XBMC. The second comment in this thread is by Elijah, who wrote ,"I got a ATV3 from COTD sales months ago and didn't realise at the time there was no Jailbreak available.. it's been gathering dust waiting as I have only 4 or 5 videos from apple, and a lot of ripped DVD's."

It's an expensive mistake to make, isn't it? Surely warning people that it won't run XBMC is not worthy of an emotional, kneejerk response?

I for one will never buy one because of it's locked down state - additionally, it has no USB host capabilities, meaning you can't even plug a usb drive with music and movies into it - you're forced to run a NAS, or a PC to stream to it - kinda defeats the purpose of a stand alone device, doesn't it? Additionally, it doesn't support 1080 output. Why spend thousands on a tv for it's capabilities and then cripple the display?

So before we let our panties get too far up our bum cracks, lets all agree to disagree - this device has many fans, and is this a good price for this device? It appears so. Does foobar have the right to post that XBMC has been ported to Android and in all probability will render this device as obsolete in the near future for non-Apple users? Definitely.

Personally, I found maryrose's reply to be out of order, and offensive. Terms like "my hero" (sarcasm), "trolls like you", "damned in hell", "spoil someone else's party" were thrown around very emotionally. I'm not a mate of foobar, but he does have a right to voice his opinion, and state cold, plain facts.

Tony, I sense you might be a little bit like me. I don't give a rats who makes the thing, so long as it does what I want and does it right.

Having never had an iphone or ipad or the equivalent android devices until literally a few weeks ago when I got my first tablet, I couldn't give a toss about which is better for whatever nonsensical reasons people conjure up and defend rabidly EITHER WAY.

When I learned of XBMC for android yesterday and shortly afterwards saw this ATV post, I jumped in without considering any apple vs android rubbish and posted that XBMC was coming to android.

The sole intention of this was to inform anyone looking for an ATV device that a VERY viable alternative was just around the corner, maybe even closer.

If ATV3 was breakable, I would probably wander to my nearest Target and get one as this is a good price / deal.

Now, regarding the attack posted toward me. I have to say that until I read ozpetes message, I couldn't grasp why this person was going off like they did. To me, it seems like they were trying to get a rise out of me which is why I suggested that they were the one trolling. Now, I do understand why they've had a tanty as they have assumed that my post was an "Android is better because" post when it simply wasn't. I considered firing back but it wouldn't have made any sense as what I had to say was well outside the context of apple vs android and would have confused "maryrose" as much as their post confused me.

        • foobar

Thanks for the mature attitude, feedback and explanation

It sure helps peoples understanding where you are coming from.

  • Seems like a good deal. I'm not interested in jailbreaking, so I'm considering selling my ATV2 and upgrading to an ATV3 anyway. Used ATV2's are selling for a good amount on ebay. Anyone want to save me the trouble and ebay fees? :)

    Pointless gadget.

  • +1

For anyone looking for a fantastic way to watch video files from your PC.
Look up Streamtome or Airvideo, converts any video format on the fly at up to 720P.
Your ipad or iphone acts as the interface to browse files from your PC and airplays to the ATV.

    • To watch a movie, you need take up both your PC and iPad? Hardly "fantastic"

  • +3

Begs the questions: Why would anyone buy this??? it hardly does basic things a media box should be able to.

    • +1

Exactly my thoughts. My Dad bought one and I hate it. Classic Apple, placing restrictions left right and centre. The whole point of a media box is to have some freedom. Ok cool, you can stream music to it from iTunes. Oh wait, first it wants me to log in with an iTunes account. And it has to be the same one as on the box, which doesn't work because I use a different one to my Dad. What the hell for? It's ridiculous and I cannot express how much I hate this thing ._.

WD TV is literally 100x better, and can be had for $20-30 more (or even cheaper for 1st gen, but personally I prefer the newer one): http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330

It has every feature you need right out of the box. No need to mess around and jailbreak to get basic functionality. Please people, I beg you - do your research before buying this thing!

      • +2

The version 2 that can be jailbroken has many great features (but still has my pet hate of not being able to stream from a local network source [as far as I know - please correct me if this is incorrect]). This version 3 seems pretty useless as a media player.

      • -3

dose your WDTV supports AirPlay? with Apple TV, my TV can receive video signal from my iPad and Macbook wirelessly. maybe you should do your research first.

    • I agree, although once Jailbroken they are exceptional little devices.

  • -2

I own both the WD player and Apple TV.
Most people would agree that when they download video files, it is all placed in one folder.
The logistics of finding the exact file on a WD player with the remote is painful, especially when you have 1000 plus files in one folder. Don't even get me started on trying to do a simple title search with the remote.
As for the comment about taking up both the PC and ipad, i have 16TB on my PC that I can access at anytime.
I set a file to download on my PC and it automatically appears on my ipad or iphone to airplay to the ATV.

  • what do you do with a apple TV?

    • It's a media player device which you use to watch your iTunes tv show and movie purchases on a HD TV. I have the entire Doctor Who seasons 1-6 on iTunes so it's good for me. Doctor Who HD episodes on a HD TV is great. :)
