Just beware that these don't kill mosquitos or other biting flys. Also, despite what the description says, it shouldn't be installed in or close to the cooking area as it creates a dead-bug mist (tiny flying parts of the dead/cooked fly) which can be very dangerous.

    • +58

Thanks. With your comment I have decided that I DontNeedThis.

      • +9

Also decided I DontNeedThis, brought 3….

        • +1

          Where to?

          • @staz: SE Melbourne, was around $9 to ship 3, assuming I ever receive them.

    • +3

it creates a dead-bug mist (tiny flying parts of the dead/cooked fly) which can be very dangerous.

I'm intrigued, how is that dangerous?

      • +1

Full of bacteria near prepped food?

        • +7

          The frying should kill that.

          • +1

@M00Cow: will take more than a quick zap to kill all the bacteria

          • +3

@M00Cow: Here's what appears to be the seminal study: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s002840010132
Some bacteria and virus survive and are spread by the explosion.

            • +2

@gakko: Without being able to read the whole article (not paying for it lol) there could be the possibility of some of the bacteria coming off the loaded flies as they flew around the room before getting zapped. However the insect particles are enough to put me off and there would have been the bacteria and viruses still present on the remnants. Cooking (esp frying) would kill everything though. Just think of it as extra special organic furikake lol

              • +1

                @Sammyboy:

Cooking (esp frying) would kill everything though.

Depending on the setup it could potentially get onto prepared food or ingredients that are served cold.

                • @Sven Viking: I mean being fried by the Nisbets Essentials Commercial Fly Killer

                  • +1

@M00Cow: Unlikely even a strong momentary electric shock will reliably kill 100% of bacteria and viruses throughout the body.

              • @Sammyboy: Dont you eat meat?

            • +3

@gakko: Ah yes James E. Urban & A. Broce the dynamic duo of the Diptera world.

I respect and hold in high regard these two scientific giants, and I do not disagree with or question their work. However, I have requested that they conduct a follow-up study comparing the spread of bacterial and viral pathogens through live flies versus exploding flies over various time periods.

I'll report here back when completed.

              • @M00Cow: I don't see why you need to mock me for explaining something. Your point about live flies is valid and clearly the implication is don't put the thing near food preparation areas where it attracts flies then pops them. Personally I'm not going for the fish-n-chip shop aesthetic in my house so I just dont let flies in.

                • @gakko: Aww sorry snookums, I wrongly assumed that you were making a joke calling it the seminal study .

      • +1

Too much protein for the recipe?

      • +2

Linda McCartney just entered the chat

        • If only John, Ringo & George had this to defend against her.

          • @M00Cow: Linda… not Paul you muppet

            • +1

@FredAstair: But if they'd used this to defeat her, she wouldn't have lead Paul stray.and they'd be still touring with John Farnham.

              • @M00Cow: You do realise I’m talking about her vegetarian plights, right¿

                • @FredAstair: Yeah, but being abstract amuses me more. Maybe I should of went with Linda used this to lure & fry Paul's brain?

    • +1

why would they not kill mosquitos?

      • +5

Mosquitoes aren't attracted to UV light

      • Could it be they just aren’t big enough to make a connection between the electrodes?

      • +3

Basically this lures insects attract by light. Moths, termites, beetles, etc

Mozzies are generally attracted by CO2 & warmth & smell. Which is why CO2 are what proper mozzie traps use (better ones also use pheromones).

    • .. this also bbq flies?

My dogs will kill me if i don't get this!

    • (tiny flying parts of the dead/cooked fly)

      • WEF approved
    • But Klaus and Co. keep telling me that bugs are fantastic to eat?

    • it shouldn't be installed in or close to the cooking area as it creates a dead-bug mist (tiny flying parts of the dead/cooked fly)

      Extra flavouring?

  • +9

Bought two. The lawn has tons of flies and now they have this gift

  • Cheers Op shipping was $12 to Hornsby in SYD,

If you must buy this add this as well save on shipping (90c)

    or more junk on clearance

    https://www.nisbets.com.au/clearance-and-special-offers/clea…

    • Didn’t save anything on shipping for me? Still $12

      • +3

The saving is on the sanitiser.. You add that pay 90c and dont pay more for the shipping. Likewise on other items on clearance.

        • +6

But you are paying 90cents extra right.? Whereas you could just have your first product only.

    • +1

Instead of buying junk, v or would be better you buy replacement bulbs for this for a couple of bucks each: https://www.nisbets.com.au/replacement-8w-fluorescent-tube-f…

      • +3

Those are showing as $2.90 ex gst so over $3 each. This zapper comes with 3 globes (2 + 1 spare) and costs less than $9. Seems you can get the whole unit for less than 3 bulbs so if you never need to replace more than 1 bulb, you have a spare unit. Also if they cancel part of your order but leave in the bulbs then you have some useless bulbs.

        • Good point!

  • Is anyone else having error with Paypal checkout?

    • +1

      nope

    • PP works for me

      • +13

Brag about it now but you'll be old, one day.

    • Cc payment not working

  • Was looking at one for an outdoor covered area. Anyone know how this compares to the more traditional hanging bug zappers from Bunnings etc?

    • Please don't. Outdoors these things kill all sorts of bugs and insects, which aside from being bad in its own right, means birds dont have food. Inside they spray the fly matter everywhere when they zap em (they do that outside too but it matters less there).

      • +14

Thanks for your input. Outside is where it will be used, birds can have everywhere else except the porch.

        • I hear you. My front door gets dozens of mozzies every day (unless its blistering hot). Nothing i've done seems to deter them. They have no interest in zappers like this either.

        • +6

https://envirosafeaustralia.com.au/ this looks better imo. Available at bunnings. Anyway good luck!

          • +1

@gakko: Id rather have the flies than put up with the smell these things put out!

            • @Dave0: You're not supposed to hang it near you - the trap attracts the flies so you can put it as far away from you (and your neighbours) as possible. It will draw the flies away.

              • @brotherfranciz: Yeah i didn't realise how bad they were when we got them. Was just drawing attention to the fact they stink and they can't be close to the house, ie under a pergola.

          • +1

@gakko: Yes, these are the best.

            https://envirosafeaustralia.com.au/how-it-works/

It's so effective that it's kind of gross seeing a massive pile of dead flies in there!

          • +1

@gakko: Thanks. I'll have a look at this instead. Appreciate the alternative offered.

        • +1

Outside is where it will be used

You realise that when these are used outside they actually attract more insects to the area don't you?

birds can have everywhere else except the porch.

gakko is saying that you'll be attracting more than the things you want to kill from a large area.
This wont stop attaching things just because they are not in your porch area.

      • I feed the dead ones from inside to my chooks. They love em.

  • Thanks op

  • +7

Likely will be yet another Nisbets price error with a refund forthcoming

They also have very bad inventory keeping, with the above example there were hundreds if not thousands sold and their website allowed it. Nobody around to notice all the sales until they returned back to office to finally stop all the sales.

    • Received mine today!

  • +1

Their hand sanitiser is also $0.90 for 1. Seems cheap

    https://www.nisbets.com.au/alcohol-hand-sanitiser-500ml/fe95…

  • +2

    $45 delivery for me… ooft

  • +3

They will send spam mail to your house even if you decided on the checkout not to purchase from them

  • +3

Waiting for an OzBargainer Zapper to go on sale. Instead of a UV light that attracts bugs it will have a $0.01 price error to attract OzBargainers

    • +1

      And then zaps their wallets

  • How does this compare with Bunnings one?

  • They are charging GST on shipping cost. Is this normal?

    • yes, alibaba does it at least

    • Is delivery a Good or Service?

  • +3

    Must resist, I .. don't.. need .. it…

    ZAP!

  • Cheers. $19 delivered

  • Ordered two. Combined shipping $9.90 to Moorebank in Sydney.

  • Now shows back order

  • +1

I thought in Australia if you list something to the general public you had to include gst in the price and only business to business could not?

  • +1

you can get replacement 8w tubes for under $2 as well. The 16w zapper takes 2 x 8w tubes by the look of it.
I am also ok with the shipping fee, got lots of other things too that were ridiculous sale prices and the $20 for shipping is cheaper than driving to Victoria (from NSW) lol.

    • Actually they are $3 with gst and the unit comes with 3 bulbs so unit with 3 bulbs is cheaper than 3 bulbs alone..

      • +2

That's why I ordered 10 units so I have spare globes.

        • +1

I like the cut of your gib,

          • +1

@itsasteal: I'll even scrap the old units for some extra $s to further increase the savings!

  • Anyone know if this works on midges?

  • Thank you op. Ordered 3 for $40 delivered to Liverpool

  • Will this work on silverfish and moths? Thx

  • -1

    Thanks OP
