  • This or Pinecil?

Pinecil for sure. This requires butane gas, and it’ll just cost more in the longer term.

These are not very good. Weirdly they don’t get very hot.

I have a very old Weller butane Portasol that’s way (way) better than these crappy units.

mines long gone. eventually developed a leak. then binned.

the Dremel $100 one I have is pretty much the same as my Aldi $35 portable soldering iron. still both going strong

    • i went battery for portability and gave up on gas after my weller leaked ….sure need to charge batteries or use alkaline but it’s for emergency for a few joints that soldering in the car , etc.

I got one of these about 6 months ago for a little more than this. At the moment I'm quite happy with it. It gets occasional use for soldering small wires, warming heatshrink tube and pushing threaded inserts into 3d prints. Hopefully it doesn't start leaking any time soon.

Mainly commenting because I wanted to say how I initially filled it from one of those big aerosol cans used in butane stoves. I thought it was crap, the soldering iron struggled to melt solder and the flame in torch mode was way smaller than the one shown in the picture - which I assumed was photoshopped in. I was ready to bin it. Then I was in SCA and saw the tins of hot devil butane, they say something on the label like "super pure butane" so I thought I would take a chance on one. Works like a champ now! big flame, the first threaded insert I pushed in was way too hot :P

So that's the catch - you need good quality butane and if you're using it a lot there would be cheaper options in the long run.

    • “pure butane” …has the same issues with a cigarette lighter i had, used to clog up with carbon build up , changed butane and all was good …..

    • That's interesting, I've got a Dremel iron that started OK but now struggles to put out any useful heat, didn't realise not all butane is the same.

  • i was about to buy for no reason, but then i read the comments and will pass, this time.

  • There are some $6 kits on eBay, not sure about the quality
