Topton X2 Mini PC (4x 2.5G LAN, Intel N5105, 2x RAM, NVMe, SATA, DP/HDMI) US$122.35 (~A$182.04) Shipped @ Topton AliExpress

WinterC10

After the success of the popular Beelink deal a few people were after a Mini PC with multiple network ports, so here's a deal on one with 4x Intel i225-V B3 2.5G LAN ports. This makes it a good option for those interested in OPNsense, pfsense, Home Assistant, Win10/11, Linux etc. Furthermore the Intel Celeron N5105 4 core/4 thread CPU can decode a lot of 4K, HDR and VP9 content thanks to the Intel UHD graphics, making this a good media player as well.

Since this is a Barebones PC you need to provide your own RAM and storage, however there are bundles available with these included if you don't mind paying more. There's also the option for the cheaper Intel Celeron N5100 CPU, but I recommend choosing the N5105 as it has a higher TDP (6W vs 10W), higher base frequency (1.10 GHz vs 2.00 GHz) and higher max turbo frequency (2.80 GHz vs 2.90 GHz).

Featuring an M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD slot, 2.5" SATA slot, 2x DDR4 SODIMM slots, HDMI 2.0 & DP 1.4 with 4K@60Hz support, PCIe 1x WiFi/BT/4G/3G slot, SIM card slot, 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, COM Port, VESA mounting and AU plug.

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate, GST inclusive and stacks with cashback.

Tagging @String name @Saiya @mintyman @qwijibo @ddr0001 who showed interest in a multiple LAN mini PC in the previous deal :)

    • Thanks, grabbed 2. Will be great spares for clients using Protectli devices.

  • Ooo, I see router.. The Intel nics are the selling point

    • Yep, I've been waiting for one of these to come up at the right price; add on a WAP and we're set!

      • Exactly. Or a core switch etc

        • And an LB2120 or similar :)

  • +1

I've got a slightly different varient of this (with the bigger heatsink around the sides) has been in my rack for ~6months or so now, solid as a rock running OPNsense as a router and while it does get some fairly extreme environmental conditions (garage rack + afternoon sun beating on the door) - currently ~37c ambient inlet temp in there… it's still trucking away with no issue.

    • +1

Good to know it's handling the heat well. That's the thing about these low TDP CPUs. They can run perfectly fine being passively cooled.

      • Yeah definitely, it is quiet hot to pickup though i will say that haha :)

  • Thanks OP; been looking for a multi-ETH for OPNsense.

    HODL for cashback?

    • +7

AliExpress recently nerfed their affiliate rates for partners so I wouldn't HODL for increased cashback to save a few dollars if it was me.

      • Thanks for the advice 😊, no HODL

    • This is a good price.

I paid USD153.89 in July’22 but have no regret.

It runs super hot though so is currently sitting on top of a laptop cooler.

Thanks, @Clear. I'm interested in one but I need 10Gbps SFP+ ports and the following kit (r86s) looks a bit more powerful:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004182442458.html?mp=1. Is it possible that you can arrange something similar for this?

    Cheers

    • +1

Looks like JAN24 is valid on that one and its variants. US$24 off. I can certainly see if there's more.

      • I might be keen on one of those too. It looks like they all ship with some amount of ram and it would be good to see if they'd strip it down to barebone…

  • Nice 2.5G Intel NIC box. Got one

Any recommendations for an wifi AP to go with this?

    • TP-Link RE650, AC2600, 4×4 MU-MIMO, about $150. Thats mine, speed is OK, my clients are not even this fast. But I'd jump to one with WPA3.

  • +2

For those who want to build a beefier VMware version with one of these fanless multi-Nic mini-pcs, there is an i7 version available.

Great how-to article can be found here:

Make sure you buy the one with the good heat sink:

  • any advice on whether topton with opnsense is suitable for a single-drive nas solution?

ie would it have decent transfer rates.. as oppose to typical 4mb/s you get from a hdd plugged into a router usb?

just for backing up data really.. i guess to a 2.5 sata (under 9mm per the topton req'd specs)

    • +1

I wouldn't be backing up anything to a standalone drive on the network.
Maybe as a quick and dirty scratch drive between PCs?

      3-2-1 backup
at least 3 copies of your data
at least 2 different types of media
      at least 1 off-site

I'd suggest setting up a NAS, and syncing the important stuff to Backblaze/Google Drive/Dropbox etc.
(apologies if I'm preaching to the converted)

      • +1

I think I'm covered because my pc counts as 1, my 'nas' (currently ext hdd -> router) counts as 2, and I have my pc synced to cloud.

but the router/hdd option isn't great due to transfer speeds and 'access denied' type errors trying to access the hdd.

        thanks for the response though!

(p.s I have another hdd off-site for yearly backups.. to ensure others can access most of my photos/docs if there's some catastrophic explosion or something)

  • Given a TPLink dumb 2.5Gbe switch is more expensive, this is an absolutely fantastic deal.

Heck, even finding a Raspi for under $100 to run PiHole is difficult so the value scales even more even without needing an Intel CPU for basic adblocking.

    • QNAP 5 port unmanaged 2.5Gbe switch can currently be had for $149. Been looking for a 2.5Gbe switch but this is tempting, but after adding in RAM and storage this will be $80~ more than the QNAP.

      • I am also finding the 2.5G managed switch to be quite expensive.

      • If you buy a RAM + SSD bundle then you definitely lose the value, but most people dealing with 2.5Gbe networks at the moment likely have a spare SATA SSD and an old laptop they could sacrifice for some RAM.

As I noted, that $80 gap would be easily filled by a Raspi to run PiHole and this certainly has more than enough processing power to add in for additional services, so I reckon this wins out overall at the moment.

I'd like to say that 2.5Gbe would be more mainstream by now but it's still too expensive… Once you get to $40 per port, then a 10G fibre network with Mellanox adapters looks rather tempting!

    • Brave browser?

      • As in, you're recommending I use it? or you're asking if I am using it?

I am using Firefox on Desktop and Safari on iOS, same issue both places.

        • Asking as someone reported issues before. No adblockers or anything like that? I'd be trying in the AliExpress app to see.

          • @Clear: I run NextDNS, currently trying to run it via 4G on my iPhone.

            • +2

@dipstick: Looks like there's issues reported with NextDNS and AliExpress on Github and Reddit. Sounds like the culprit.

              • +5

@Clear: Haha Clear brings the bargains and IT support. I'm impressed!

  • Intel NIC so possibly vmware ESXi compatible?

  • Will this play back large UHF 2160p movies well?

    • +4

Not sure about UHF. Haven't tuned my set to that since the 90s. But the CPU does have Intel Quicksync, so it will hardware decode 4k bluray rips fine.

    • Looking at N5105 YouTube reviews it seems to handle 4K content pretty well with minimal stuttering so I don't think it'll be much of an issue. Don't quote me though :P

  • Oh wow this beats both my router (J3455, 1GbE *4) and Plex server (J5005)

    Can I buy two?

    • Use the coupon WinterC20 if you're going to buy 2 as it works out to be US$114.55 each.

      • +1

Thanks, decided to just do one as I would have to upgrade half the network as well… cheers

For everyone's info I run plex on a J5005, The N5105 is about 25% faster.
J5005 runs 4k streams and transcodes just fine. I think I tested 3 concurrent sessions. I presume this one, with faster/better Intel QSV and CPU will perform very nicely for just about anything that will be thrown at it.

  • I have an ASROCK J3455-ITX with 16GB ram running proxmox with a pfsense instance running and an Intel 4-NIC network card. It is completely quiet.

Pfsense is a great firewall/router etc. I use squid as a transparent proxy and also have 2 VLANs, one for the IOT + media and the other for normal networking. If this works well, I am sure this will make a great firewall.

    • Why pfsense in proxmox instead of bare metal?
What else do you run in proxmox?

      • An external web server. I figured the box was too powerful for just a router, even running snort and squid it only runs at 30pc on the pfsense instance.

  • Any recommendation for a compatible 2.5G smart switch? Preferably around/under $150 if possible.

  • Any RAM recommendation? I didn't go for the RAM and storage bundle as I had storage.

  • geez these are dropping price like crazy! To think I paid $150 recently for a 8gb pi4.

  • Can I turn this into a nas? I need some help building one. Anyone got any advice??

    • +1

Not to be harsh, but if you have to ask.. just get a proper consumer NAS. Don't try to cobble something together, just to be a couple hundred bucks cheaper, when your data is going to be on it, and may well be of inferior performance.

      • I don't have a consumer nas. I built one with a Jonsbo N1 case and Unraid.

      • id like to get into building them - how do people learn without some advice? Ill look it up myself

        • YouTube has thousands of hours of free content

  • I have an earlier version of one of these with 1Gbps ports… It works well. No issues with heat when stress testing with stress-ng.

It runs ESXi with pfsense virtualised and NICs passed through.. Uptime of a tad under 2 years and has worked flawlessly in that time.

Oh, I went for an i5 though.

  • It’s Clear from the comments this is a great device. Might need one to find a partner for @BargainsGrabber

  • No RAM, no storage version OOS?

    • Yep sold out. Seems people bought all the N5100 ones too.

    • Looks like it! Bummer, I just missed out.

  • +3

Their other link is still available if anyone is looking. This one also has i226-v NIC option.

    • Cheers, bought an N5105/i226v for $120.30 delivered!

  • Was busy for a little bit, back to buy and it was out of stock already!

  • Ah man, missed out.

    Devastated :(

My bad for not checking and not fixing my bloody email notifications on my phone.

  • Hopefully these come up again!
Just missed out :-( had in my cart and decided to think about it for 20 mins (wasn't sure if I wanted an i3).

  • If you search the TopTon store you can find a few more listings of the same hardware that have the barebone n5105 for the same price (~180 AUD after discount) in stock.

  • +4

The item is still available here and here. WinterC10 has been expired but WinterC5 is still valid. Total come up at ~$196

  • +1

There's also the option for the cheaper Intel Celeron N5100 CPU, but I recommend choosing the N5105 as it has a higher TDP (6W vs 10W)

You must be an AGL shareholder.

    • +2

      😱 how did you know?

  • I need few but already out of stock 😟😟

  • Good price, I paid around double that for my qotom box.

  • thsi looks good.

  • Anyone who missed out can grab it from here

  • +2

just wanted to say.. I contacted Tipton due to an issue with my order..

they were excellent , very happy with the service . highly recommend.

  • Really not confident this store is any good. Had put in my order from not long after this was advertised on here and just now it said its shipped. Spoke to the shop using the app and they said they had no stock. Had no answer if its actually been shipped or not. How is everyone else who ordered doing?

    • Many stores had taken a few weeks off for CNY. Many of mine from this time are shipping now.
