$400 Gift Card on Telstra 60GB/M $69/M 12-Month BYO SIM Plan (New/Port-in Customers, in-Store Only) @ JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys

1260

$69 per month for 12 months with 60GB data + 40GB bonus data and a $400 gift card. Similar to previous deals. $400 seems to be the best offer recently. Not sure if we can still request an additional $10 monthly credit from Telstra.

The Good guys has a similar deal but no bonus data, only 60GB per month.

    better than 24 months!

  • +11

To save others doing the math on the savings per month, $400/12=$33.33, so the plan is effectively $35.67/month, which is probably a good deal for Telstra

    • +4

On top, you can chat with Telstra for another $10/month discount (loyality bonus i think), so it's $25/month. I do it almost every year.

      • +8

I got lucky enough to get $20, just asked the question and the first person put it through for me.

        • Did you get the $20 discount off $69 for 12 months?

        • +1

So do I sign up first and then go to telstra chat and ask for the discount?

          • +3

@arvust: That's right. If you are unsuccessful apparently you close the chat and try again with a different person, eventually you will find someone who will do it

            • @InsertCrow: Thanks @InsertCrow, did you have mention anything in particular for them to apply discount considering it's already a newly signed/locked in service account?

              • +4

@provision: I said "the rep at JB told me to come online and ask for a port in credit, said I was able to get $20 off per month"
Worked, but I was told "Next time get JB to apply this in store as they are able".
Not going to do that though haha

        • Did you Ask for a loyalty discount or a port in credit? Last time o tried chat they denied my port in credit

          • @Bargaing: I tried this afternoon, and the second representative gave me $10 credit. No luck to get $20

        • Anyone having trouble of seeing the $20 on their first bill?
I was offered $20 port in credit via chat and with reference number etc but $20 credit failed to come up on the bill.

Live chat again and was told "Upon checking the details, the offer has been ended on 31/12/2022 for $69 plan. Hence we are unable to provide the credit. I suggest you to check with the Jb hi-fi provider, whether they can able to apply the offer."

WTH, can anyone share some help here with the $20 credit?

          • @pearl2013: Good luck lol
I had to call every single month to get them to apply my $10 discount, and only did it a couple of times, in the end I gave up

            • @lachhelix: Seems like the discount reference number means nothing to them and they can keep changing their policies according to whatever they feel like.

          • @pearl2013: Save your time and lodge a complaint referencing the date/time of your chat and number you were given. If they don't play ball with the complaint, then go to the TIO.

            • @Chuppa: Telstra is total BS… complaint and TIO is the way to go. Thx Chuppa!

          • @pearl2013: I also used the app chat feature continiuing with the same thread I asked for the discount on so you have a reference. Best of luck

            • @InsertCrow: I ported into Telstra today on this deal. I am having no luck at all getting a Loyalty Bonus/Port in Credit. Every Telstra rep refers me back to JB Hifi with a prepared blurb.

"Currently, there are no Telstra port in credit offer, <Insert Name>. I would also like to share to you that JB Hifi The Good Guys Plans is a sister company of Telstra only. Their plans, services and policy may differ with Telstra. This same goes with offers and promotion. I highly suggest visiting the JB Hifi store where you process your sign up, customer. As they might give you an exclusive offer for your account. You may also contact the support team of JB Hifi on this link:"

Good luck to anyone else that is trying but it appears this ship has sailed.

      • +6

same, got $20 off the $89 plan for 24 months with $1200 GC. They could only apply the discount for the first 12 months.

      • +2

What do you guys say to get this discount? Is this after you've signed up?

        • Been told I can get port in discount by JB-hifi, recycle the chat agents until one of them does it.

      • So you port out for a month and back again?

      • When did you get it?
Tried a few weeks ago and got denied.

        • Yeah, I also tried several times, and all of them said I need to get JB-HIFI to apply any discounts.

      • How can I talk to customer service? Just asking the promotion directly? Is this plan in-store only?

      • Has the live chat option changed now as well… called message us now ?

    • +6

Which is not completely terrible. Esp if you're looking to use it as home internet. 100gb of data, 5g speeds, and then 1.5mbps shaped speed when it runs out.
Then you have all the telstra benefits on top.

As long as you can spend the money at jbhifi efficiently, it's not too bad. Definitely worse ways to do it. However I would value the $400 at 85%, because they've been having 10% off gift card promotions so frequently its basically the new normal. That makes the giftcard worth $340, taking the plan cost to ~$40 per month

      • -6

Well no. $400 is $400. That’s absolutely rubbish taking 15% off the value just like that to increase the m2m total if you are retaining the GC for personal use.

Imagine going into Jb with a 400gc and them saying “soz mate? How’s you want to pay the extra $60?” The 10% you mention is via a 3rd party which in most cases have capped usage per transaction and unlike a genuine JB GC has a 3-yr expiry. So in the grand scheme of theme of things, you are buying a TCN gc for a “short term” spend whereas you can bank JB until you are ready.

        • +3

Yeah naa, gift cards aren't worth face cash value.

You can easily get JB gift cards for between 5-10% off face value.

It's fair to devalue it's "worth" a little bit when calculating the value of this deal.

          • -3

@Binchicken22: Actually, Gift cards are worth face value as it is a 1-for-1 transaction. How you obtain it is what determines the true value.

outlander was devaluating the GC based on an assumption @ 15%. For that valuation to be true, he should’ve based it on the highest value “non-membership” discount with no expiry. I often purchase via the TCN cards but those have a shelf life so should be excluded.

            • -1

@ExtraSalt: Sometimes people don't know sh*t but comment like experts. If gift cards are worth face value as it is a 1-for-1 transaction, how come they go on special? 10% off gift cards. Ever seen an ad for $100 note going for $90?

        • +1

you can resell the giftcard for 10% off and many will buy if you don't need to buy anything from JB LOL

      • Can you use the $400 and the Giftcards towards the purchase of a new iPhone?

        • Yes, the $400 is in the form of a JB gift card which can be used on any items at JB and there’s no expiry on the gift card too

  • +2

Can you still switch to your old number (also with Telstra) after the new connection is finalized?

    • keen to know if this is still an option

    • +9

i did this ~18 months ago and it turned into a MASSIVE headache. multiple trips to JB store, multiple chat sessions on telstra website and a couple of calls directly to telstra - essentially JB said it was all good and a couple of people at telstra didn't want to do it.. i personally will not be doing this method again, not worth the hassle

      • -1

similar experience. it's not as easy as some people say in the comments.

      • Apparently these deals for for “new” telstra customers. Im surprised it’s possible though it does seem like a pain

      • I've done this back in 2020 and it was breeze. Did you use the correct terminology on the telstra chat? "FNN" change?

      • I have done it a number of times over the years, first few times varied from bad to woeful, the last time though was when Covid was ravaging their Indian call centres so you had to go in-store, In and out in no time.

    • +2

Had to do this when switching from Telstra prepaid to postpaid. Was seamless as I had a case manager handling the whole process and while its possible it may not be as easy as it was for me based on garygaz's comment below.

    • +1

I've done it a couple of times but when I did it last year, it was a hassle and the person in the Telstra store couldn't do it properly. I had to get on the phone to Telstra and the support guy had to get his supervisor to process it.

    • Yes, I did it 2 weeks ago, no problem.

  • Didnt I get $500 for this same deal a couple of years ago?

This is the best I've seen recently…

    • +3

Indeed. They are not offering $500 on 12 months plan any more

    • +2

That's history now. Tha best offer coming has been $400 now a days.

      • +2

        Damn inflation

    • Yeah got $500 few years ago then $400 again this year, not bad all in all

  • -4

Telstra have gone insane with their security. Understandable if you want to make changes to an account, but i don't see the need for MFA to pay a damn bill.

    • +11

Sounds like a good thing to me. We should be used to MFA by now

      • +2

Problem is Telstra's implementation is horrible and non-standard. Their stupid "Telstra PIN" has never worked properly for me.

      • +2

i don't disagree with the concept. I do wonder how difficult it can be made to pay a bill

        • Even easier, direct debit.

    • +1

I think it was a new change that all telcos had to start doing recently I think I remember reading somewhere……

    • +1

      The alternative is Optus's predicament

    • I would rather have all the security enabled than losing my data out in the dark web… not sure which era you are living in….

      • +1

The era where sense prevails. As i mentioned, i understand the need for MFA. There should not be a need for it in order to pay a bill. If anything, that should then be the banks MFA, not Telstra.

Seems like Telstra are going down the road of having me wear a helmet as well as a seatbelt inside a car.

  • +1

Current Telstra customer off contract period, I guess I'll have to cancel it and do another month with another Telco then wait for the next deal?

    • +2

Usually get a $2 Vodafone sim, port to that then go to telstra store.

      • Ah thanks so waiting a month before you can port back in isn't a thing anymore?

        • It wasn't when we did it but that was 2019 sorry

          • @Jazza2400: That’s what I did back in 2019 as well with the $500 deal. But I think the rules have changed recently that you need to be on another network for at least a month

        • Definitely not a thing anymore.

      • i wonder if this is an option still?

    • +1

Ask for a new service. It'll get added to your telstra account. Then jump on live chat and ask them to close your old account and move your old number to your new account. I've done that the past two years for both me and my partner.

      • telstra chat said due to security changes they wont do this over chat anymore and it needs to be inperson or over the phone.
I just called and had it changed over now.

        get vodafone sim for $4
port in at JB with Voda sim
        get gift card
ask telstra chat for $10 port in credit for length of contract
then call telstra 13 22 00 and ask the rep to close old account, and port old number onto new account
        Done.

  • -5

This doesn’t look like 100GB for the term of the contract but please correct me if I’m wrong

This looks like a 60gb plan with 40gb bonus, except the bonus data ends 31 March

    • +3

I'm hoping the bonus data offer ends in March, not during your contract

    • +3

It is possible that the bonus data promo ends 31st March as the term below it states gift card ends 25th Jan which is highly improbable for a jb giftcard. That might be the promo end date.

    • +4

The bonus data will run out at the end of your contract. The bonus data deal been applied to signs up ends 31st of March.

      • Ah gotcha, that makes more sense. Now to remember where I remove the neg

        Mod: Revoked it for you

        • +1

Click on votes at the top and scroll down to yours and remove it

  • I've considered it and unless your company pays for your telecom plan
its simply not worth it anymore. I pay $99 for a year per sim with vodafone after porting out 3 telstra $69 plan.

    • +1

      Tax deductible

      • so why wouldn't a prepaid sim be tax deductible?

    • These deals work perfectly for me as my company pays my monthly mobile bill 😊

      • They buy you sim card plans with no phone?

        • +1

That’s how we roll too. My employer gives me the option of a company sim but I use my own so they pay a phone allowance but still provide me with a company phone.

  • Combined with a $20/month discount is a great deal!

    • How to get discount?

      • Read comments above

      • Telstra Live Chat, just did it myself

        • The $20? Making it $49 a month?

          • +1

@goldiep: Yeap, they originally offered me $15pm but ‘It wasn’t available’ so gave me $20 instead.

    • It doesn’t always work. Please people don’t expect to even get $10 off a month and sign up because you feel lucky and be disappointed when you don’t get any after going through 10 live chats.

  • I would totally sign up even with just $10 discount as I really want to try the sim in Apple Watch. But currently with Telstra prepaid. I’m also a very light user and only use 80-90 gb a year

    • +2

Yea hard to look elsewhere than boost for $150 - $200 a year at 140gb.

  • +2

Do people really use this much data?

I moved a long time ago to Telstra Prepaid - I pay $300 for the year / 150GB data and unlimited calls. Can top up the data if needed. Their post-paid plans are such poor value.

    • +1

After the gift card and if you get $10 off it works out the same as yours. Some if able to get $20 extra off only $180 a year lol.

    • If you need the mobile data for WFH, then maybe. I'm regularly dealing with datasets that go into several gigs each for work. Coupled with regular Teams meetings and I can burn through the data pretty quickly.

      • You use your mobile for that? Sheesh, that's what NBN is for.
