For anyone wondering, the RT-AX86U Pro is basically the RT-AX86U with a slightly faster CPU.

Hope we see the price of the non-pro drop a bit.

  • What advantages does this have over my AC68U, which I admit is starting to get old?

    • +2

      C -> X

      • “68.

Like, besides Wi-Fi 6, which I wouldn’t notice because 100 Internet, does it do anything extra?

        Better range?

I’m just wondering how to justify it.

        • Better range, higher speeds, beam forming, higher device limit, better performance, security, qos

All subjective to the use case

          https://versus.com/en/asus-rt-ac68u-vs-asus-rt-ax86u

        • WPA3 has superseded WPA2. WPA2 is somewhat vulnerable these days.

Unless you have a high density environment then improvement would not be incremtnal. Dont expect big leap in throughput performance.

If you have coverage issue then best to buy this and hook it up with the old one with AiMesh.
Spread the two units out strategically and you'll likely to see more improvement in user experience

    • I had a dual TM-AC1900 (Cut down AC68U) which I just replaced with a GT-AX6000 and AX86S.

I got improved range and speed. I was going to add a third AI mesh node, but this is no longer needed.

My reasons for upgrading were mainly VR and stability. With my old setup, I started to have the AI mesh node drop out and couldn't be bothered troubleshooting. Based on preliminary research, it likely would have just required resetting both routers.

It was well worth the upgrade for me. There is, however, nothing wrong with the AC68U and at this stage I would be holding out for Wifi 6E assuming you have no major issues.

      • On a busy network for better VR your better off getting a cheap dedicated access point and just run VR off that, improved my experience considerably

  • Ouch, glad I got the RT-AX86U earlier at a more reasonable price. Good router though.

    • For how much did you buy it?
I am waiting for a deal for $300

    • Same, got it for around 300 and its been working great! The most recent merlin update enabled wireguard

  • For this cash I would expect tri band

  • Good unit I think. I am already super impressed with my 2nd hand RT-RC86U, such a capable router especially with Merlin and other add-ons.

  • I believe the AX series support wireguard VPN which may have better speeds with a supported provider (not in beta trials). This is a win over the AC series so c to X is a promising improvement.

  • Bit cheeky to call this a 'pro' model and not add WiFi 6e.

6e is pretty much a marketing gimmick at this stage. Wifi 7 for any meaningful improvements.

Lol the Asus ax6000 deal for 400 previously seems way better value
