  • But what what if OW says no PM due to needing to have Telstra plan?

    • +84

Tip over some shelves and leave the store

      • And we'll see you in the news tomorrow…

Most likely the case, tried this before and they said nope

    • +1

Let me add to cart and proceed without adding a plan.

    • +10

The manager at my store honoured it but did mention that briefly, I just said you don’t need a plan to buy the outright model.

As always with OW though, I’m your experience may vary I’m sure

For anyone concerned they will try to "fight back" on this deal. Telstra store selling the phone outright for $799 should mean this is the current lowest retail price available on market. I just spoke to their customer service team and they mentioned the phone won't be locked to Telstra services, meaning this is just a pixel 7 on sale $200 down from retail price. No plans attached required.

Hopefully this helps for anyone out there.

        • Thanks for that, but clearly i don't know how to negotiate. After waiting on the phone for a while the operator straight away said that they don't price Telstra/Optus or other phone companies because you have to create an account to purchase the phone outright and not as a guest and as part of creating an account, they will perform certain checks e.g. you are an existing Telstra customer.
          I tried but i failed :(

        • I tried today at office works, called their Price beat number too. They didn't budged stating it needs a telstra profile. I pointed out that it's just a free profile and confirmed with Telstra it's not locked. They didn't budge.

But then again, the experience can verry as same store price matched Jack deals after few tries yesterday for 6a.

      • And which store was that? 👀

    • +22

Refer them to the ACCC page 357, chapter 4, section 14, clause 47, paragraph 8, sentence 2, word 14

    • +39

Wow, free? The real bargain is always in the comments.

  • Do you need to be a have an active Telstra account to purchase outright? I tried checking out with an account I used to have a plan on, but it keeps bugging out and i can't proceed.

    • you need a website account (not a full fledged telstra account) to get delivery processed, but it doesn't have to be associated with a mobile plan

      • +1

bummer, I tried even with setting up a new telstra account ID. Verified and all.

        Unable to process your order

You need to have a service with us to buy a device outright. If you don't have a service, you can only purchase a device outright with a plan.

        • Ah damn, I am with Telstra so that’s probably why. Can always try OW and not tell them that hahaha

  • Does anyone have any long-term reviews of the 7?

The 6 was an absolute dumpsterfire from a software point of view, I ended up selling it because I wasn't having a good time

    • +1

google just cut 12k jobs. Probably the 8 would be less buggy.

    • -5

Don't buy it, the fingerprint reader is garbage and will colour your whole experience of the phone. If you can't reliably unlock your phone you can't use it.

      • +3

        Nice to know, cheers

        • +10

Counterpoint. Works perfectly fine for me.

          • +6

@Aureus: People with dry hands will struggle with the fingerprint sensor. That includes me, so the solution is to touch my (apparently greasier) forehead before touching the sensor.

            • @eraser215: Same issue on S22U

just after washing and drying hands, note that I do have a glass screen protector on.

          • @Aureus: That's great for you, but not great for my wife who has tried literally everything to get it to work. It shouldn't be that hard. But it is. We have updated firmware, redone the fingerprint countless times, etc. etc. and still it is an absolute PITA.

The sheer fact that the advice given is moisturise your finger / make sure your screen is free of smudges / press lightly not heavily / don't use a screen protector - just all advice that is absolutely silly in practice.

      • +1

Use can Face Unlock instead if you like the phone otherwise.

        • +2

Or use a pin, or a pattern.

      • +1

Its my one and only gripe with the phone.

Everything else is stellar, especially considering it only cost me $450 after taking all the pre-order bonuses into account.

      • Agree no fingerprint sensor better than pixel 5

    • +15

Define long term. I've had mine over a month.

Complaints: fingerprint scanner just isn't as good as the old rear ones (had a 5 before this) but face unlock makes up for it during better light situations.
Bluetooth is.. Fine but does seem a little susceptible to interference but is usually only an issue in the Sydney cbd for me. Wasn't as big an issue on my 5

Pros, kinda everything else? Solid display, good battery (really need to give adaptive battery a couple weeks to sort itself out though), performance is great, camera is great. No other major bugs that I've had (ensuring you're keeping up to date with latest system updates etc, definitely had a couple more hiccups when I first got it on its release software)

I got it for 750 through Telstra (I have a plan) last deal during Dec. Worth the price IMO. I would be cautious spending the full 999 on it, but for 750-800 odd it's a no brainier if you can get past the sometimes annoying fingerprint scanner. Which is really my only major complaint.

      • Great thanks mate!

      • +6

Man I wish rear fingerprint scanner was still there. Currently still using my Pixel 2XL and it's really a no fuss issue; don't have to use pin/pattern every single time.

      • I agree with all of the above after having mine for ~1 month.

      • I love my fingerprint scanner unlocker on my P5

    • +2

I'm a pixel fan and always update to newest version. I'm happy with everything, except for the fingerprint unlocking which rarely works. Not sure why they haven't figured that issue out yet. I just stick with the pattern unlock

      • Fingerprint (with a screen protector) reader only fails for me at low light and this not related to face recognition so have to do PIN when that fails. I also miss the rear fingerprint reader.

    • Cant speak for the 7, but 3 and 5 were garbage mainly because of the battery life. Had to charge at LEAST twice a day just after a year of use. Except for the camera, I havent found anything thats actually good with the Pixel phones

    • I've had mine since Black Friday. It's had the occasional UI glitches (normally I'd use the Nova launcher but for the time being I'm using the Pixel launcher), but nothing like what people reported for the 6. My main gripe has been with the fingerprint sensor (I really liked the sensor on the back of the Pixels 2/3) which is faster than the 6 (my partner has a 6); even with clean hands I often have to unlock with the PIN because it can't read it in three goes. The glass back also feels like a disaster waiting to happen, but I've got a heavy duty case on it now, so that's less of a worry. When I was carrying it without a case for a couple of weeks I was constantly worried I would drop it and break it.

I'll also say that I haven't personally had the following problem, but my partner's mum has had constant call drops (she got her phone a week before me). She's with Telstra though and I'm with Belong (Telstra reseller network) so YMMV.

As for pros, I'll echo what @ReaperX22 said below; battery life has been good, performance is snappy, takes really nice pictures. I've very occasionally had to zoom for photos which don't look that great, but it's not been a dealbreaker.

  • +4

My wife just got the 7 pro over Christmas and so far it's been quite good (1049 at OW)
Bad point right now is at times when she makes an outgoing call it goes through but then disconnects after 2seconds.
Quick fix is airplane mode and back off (or reboot) and is fine for a while. Minus that (got to double check if that was fixed in the Jan patch) it's rock solid
Camera is amazing, Astro photography is fun and for the price, I'm tempted to upgrade my 5 pro.

I know this deal is for the 7, but similar specs (similar) and no doubt it will drop again too

    • +1

Had same issue at start. Reset and fine. Haven't had it since.

Everything else has been great, particularly the camera. Finger sensor is OK, but not an issue with face unlock.

For 750 that I got it for, incredible deal

  • I have the Pixel 7, upgraded from a S8 for context and i think it's awesome. I didn't realise how slow the S8 was until i started using the P7. Camera is great and the battery lasts for what i do, at 49% when i went to bed last night.

  • I have a Pixel 5. Thinking of a 7. Is it worth getting the 256GB version? I've used 82GB of 128GB on my Pixel 5.

It looks like my Telstra ID might still work. I have no current account with Telstra except obliquely via Boost Prepaid.

Problem was I had to re-verify my account and it seems to be objecting to my license - but I was using the details on the NSW electronic license. I'll try again tonight when I have my wallet.

    Back to work!

    • +3

Honestly. If your 5 is fine, wait for the 8 IMO.

I had every intention of waiting for the P8 but then my P5 met with a jar and a bluetooth speaker and they had a fight (don't ask) - so I was 'forced' to upgrade. (Pixel bleeding under the screen, blacked out small section). The p5 still has updates til end of this year, I'd personally wait and hope they update the fingerprint sensor to be ultrasonic or even a power-button sensor or better face-unlock tech.

The P5 did everything I needed it to and was perfectly fine. Yes the upgrade is there/tangible, but I didn't NEED it at all.

      • +1

        Second this!

      • I'm a big fan of smaller phones which is why i've struggled to move on from the pixel 5, the 7 was a tad smaller but I hear they are working on a smaller fully featured phone. If they do they can have my money!!!

        • Agreed. The P5 was a perfect size. I've gotten used to the P7 and I've compared it to my mates P6. Despite only being very marginally smaller, it's a pretty tangible difference in usability IMO. But still..would've loved a more P5 sized phone.

  • +1

Just got the Asus Zenfone 9 yesterday because I got impatient waiting for a Pixel 7 deal lol.
That said, so far the ZP9 is great!

    • +1

Same! Such a snappy little pocket rocket I love it.

    • +1

Anyone use it with Telstra and have VoLTE/VoWiFi working?

      • Can't speak for Telstra but works with AussieBB who is Optus

      • I returned my 7 Pro last week due to these issues. Not with Telstra, but Coles mobile.

      • I'm on Telstra and VoLTE is working for me. I'm still trying to figure out how to disable VoWIFI.

So it turns out mine was disabled by default.

        To access the settings:
Enter *#*#3642623344#*#* into the dialler app set as default (I use Google, rather than Asus one) and then go to Settings -> Network and internet -> Call and then the option appeared (Wi-Fi calling) at the bottom.

        • I've heard it dissapears after a phone reboot.. Any chance you could check? Not having VoWiFi natively is a deal breaker for me.

  • +1

Attempted price match at Officeworks Five Dock. Didnt work, they said they wouldnt price match Optus or Telstra

    • +1

that's misleading advertisement if they can't even price beat/match local seller!

  • Got a price match for $799 with JB as long as you have an active Telstra ID.

  • +1

What's the easiest/cheapest way to get a Telstra account? Can you get a cheap SIM, register and that'll give you an account?

  • OW refused pricematch/beat

    • +1

Same. I went to Officeworks Belconnen (Canberra). The manager there noticed the footnote "If you already have a service with us, you can buy outright without adding a plan" and kindly denied a price beat.

That's fine, I'll buy via Telstra.

      • Nope. Can't buy via Telstra. I tried signing my mother up for a new Tesltra ID but got "You need to have a service with us to buy a device outright. If you don't have a service, you can only purchase a device outright with a plan." And just now I tried with my existing Telstra ID and got the same message.

        I guess I'll try JB Hi-Fi

  • OW call centre refused to price beat for me but I was successful in getting it done in store. So I guess it really comes down to the manager.

  • I'm still waiting for Amazon to post the 6a deal from 3 weeks ago.

  • Officeworks, Bourke Street Melbourne won't price match Telstra.

  • You can use Telstra points to bring the price down further

    • +3

Oooo, I have a few of those - worth almost nothing.

      • +1

They let you redeem for amazon gift cards now - 15000 pts for $30 gift card.

From the pixel 12000 pts will take off $30.

        • Hmm - a whole 1,800 points - $4.50 if you go by the 12k to $30 rate. Not sure if I can redeem them.

Edit: looks like the minumum you can apply is 2600 points. That would get the 128GB Pixel 7 for $792

  • Managed to get OW to price match with no dramas. Looks like its luck of the draw, I got the store manager who simply asked if the Telstra deal needed an accompanying plan….. to which I said no, and that was it.

  • +1

Tried to price match at OW when it was $750.

They kept saying they wouldn't confirm price match over the phone, and I should come in. But it was heavily implied they would price match.

Went to two stores and they turned me down each time.

What a stupid policy and waste of time.

Ended up getting a pixel 7 pro instead and I'm really happy with the decision.

    • Where did you get the pixel 7 Pro from?

      • Office-works. Ended up using those celebration gift cards that were 15% off (pixel 7 pro was $1032)

Ended up being like $880 or something

        • Pixel 7 Pro is 1299 on OW..

          • @Overcomerak: Sorry that was last year, when the pixel 7 was $750, pixel 7 pro was $1032, and there was 15% off celebration gift cards (that can be used at officeworks)

  • +1

Package secured at Officeworks Vermont South. Got asked if it was unlocked and I said yes. Manager took the person aside and was telling them about how they don't normally price beat Telstra and all this other stuff but she decided to allow it in the end I suppose. Happy days

  • Still don't like the hump at the back of the phone but the clean UI is refreshing after all the bloat ware on other makes

    • +1

With a good case like the Spigen series, the hump is smoothed out and also protects the camera lens.

  • +1

jb hi fi is also a hit or miss, i've price matched telstra stuff for you customers before but management caught onto it and let me know i couldn't because you technically need to be a telstra customer..

    • yep our store just makes sure they’re a Telstra customer to allow PM,

  • Officeworks Werribee denied price match, said they couldnt login to see full offer and threfore couldnt match. (ie too hard basket).

  • -3

Officeworks do not match Telstra outright deals due to needing to have an existing service with them to buy the phone outright.
"Please stop putting price match to OW " for these deals already. They are not valid for OW at all. Head office has directed stores never to match these prices due to the individual needing to be have an exisiting account with Telstra with and ongoing service. Not a " free profile " as some of you have incorrectly indicated or lied about.

Stop wasting OW time and individuals on here incorrectly about policies you clearly don't have a clue about. It's not only frustrating for the individual heading to one of the OW stores, specifically to price match, based on your incorrect information. and being disappointed in being told no.
But, it also wastes OW time and staff having to inform the individual and also check on with management who then needs to continue to explain, the the price matching does not meet the criteria needed to price match.

Tired of you fools spreading misinformation in regards to these deals every damn time relating to this same " Outright Telstra Deals".
I've seen ppl get furious and abuse the staff there because your your stupid spreading of misinformation.

ADMINS : please edit this post and delete the price match OW. You should be aware of this by now too with the amount of posts and comments from previous deals stating the same negative outcomes of those posts.

    I said Good day sir!

    • +6

Refer to first reply to the first comment.

Never said OW price match is a sure thing but it’s possible. You can just go buy from Telstra but the true ozbargainer trying to saving a buck will drive out to OW to try their luck and for some of us that works and for others (maybe most) it doesn’t. That’s just the game.

If you’re too precious to play just use the Telstra link.

Nevertheless, I’ll add a little comment in the primary post to state this.

    • you don't actually need an existing service with Telstra.. i just made a new Telstra account and purchased the phone directly from them outright with no plan

      • The website says "If you already have a service with us, you can buy outright without adding a plan" so that would be what OW are basing it on.

      • When I try to create a telstra account it ask for a telstra phone number?

    • Show us on the officeworks policy where they don't?

      • -3

The manager said the term of Telstra is you have to have their service, that's the reason why they can't beat, but the front desk said they will able to do it,so don't bother.

        • -2

Edit:The manager of officeworks said the term of Telstra is you have to have their service they can't price beat when I was in store, that's the reason, but the front desk that I called to comfirm before heading to their store said they will able to do it,so don't bother to waste your time.
Also telstra you cant buy from them in store theyve told me to go JB HIFI,which I finally got the phone

    • And yet many people have been able to price match despite the policy so your comments are worth absolutely nothing.

  • Has it got bloatware from telstra or just a stock phone?

  • Jb no price match

  • JB and HN no price match

  • -5

I called before going to Officeworks store, the local store confirmed with me on the phone they can do price beat then when arrived 20 mins later the store manager said they can't do the price beat, that's just how shlt the store is,will never buy anything at Officeworks anymore.

    • +7

Sounds like you should be writing a bad google review for the Officeworks store, not negging this deal.
