Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 2GB $79.66 + Delivery @ Core Electronics

303

Not a deal, but it's back in stock. Maybe because there will be more Pis coming in 2023 according to Raspberry Pi Foundation's post, the stock level will be promising this year.

Can these suckers handle hw video transcoding, like 4k 10bit hevc to say 1080?

  • +2

    too little and too late
and if no Raspberry Pi 5 before 2024, i may give Orange Pi 5 RK3588S a go

    • +2

I was very disappointed with the Orange Pi I bought a few years ago. The lack of good software and community support meant that it never lived up to its potential. I don't know if things have improved. There are certainly many videos on YouTube about the 3588s models and the support seems better, it isn't until you have really used them in detail that the problems show up.

    • I tried to install Plex onto an Orange Pi 3 LTS this morning. It just would not start.
Also, the device was suprisingly laggy.

    • Have a look at the rock boards on allnet china as alternative

    • good luck getting an orange pi to work, there's a reason it's available, nobody wants the headache of getting them to work. It's not download and image, flash it and plug everything in like the rpi

    • considering rpi4 was released in 2019, it'd be sad if nothing can replace it after 5 years (until rpi5)
with such a great ecosystem, how much can we expect rpi5 perform over rpi4? as a comparison, rk3588 is about 3x of rpi4

    Holding out for 4gb

    • -1

You don't need 4gb unless you want to surf the net with it.

      • Surfing the web / YouTube etc is painfully slow on a RPi4 with 4GB compared to a mobile phone from 7 years ago. :-(

Certain tasks may require over 4GB of RAM. E.g. Using jadx to decompile Android apps to look for sensitive information or vulnerabilities.

      • Future proofing, not much more..

    Will this run Home Assistant?

    • +1

Yes. Just make sure you have a good power supply, as power outage is the biggest curruptor of storage.

    • and a SSD instead of SD card.

      • I think I should get the whole kit then, I have no other things for it.
Edit: The 4GB bundle is out of stock haha

    • +1

      Yes and no.
Yes, it will run Home Assistant.
Will it be able to run lots of extra services on top of HA using it's addon (docker) system, such as Node-Red which most people use? Not without running out for ram fast.
If you are going to invest in a HA ecosystem with Zigbee sensors etc, grab at least the 4gb model IMO.

2nd hand nuc will be my choice

HODL till 8GB back in stock.

The great thing about these posts is all the 'bought one, now to figure out what to do with it' people, while people in actual need of one struggle to get their hands on one.

This isn't a bargain and should be in the forums at best, imo.

    • +3

Don't blame it on those folk, its not their fault others can't get a Pi.
Besides, you never know those people might end up doing something cool with it.

    • +1

industrial / oem customers bought most of them
agree though this is not a bargain

      • Agree, considering raspberry pi started out as non profit for third world country. and now hog up by the riches of the first world country

    • Agreed, why not save $80 instead of snaffling up stuff you don't need, not really even a bargain and other people may actually need one. A lot of people fall for x% off as well..

  • Official psu is recommended for this and I bought one recently for $20 couple of weeks ago but price has dropped a couple of days ago to $12.95 delivered in this listing

    • 12.95 is the cable

      • -1

It says psu plus the switch which makes it even better

        • For $32.95…

        • You are right, seems to be a glitch with my ebay app, shows $12.95 when I choose all, but when adding to cart goes up.
          It’s $21.90 here

        • when you actually select the psu plus cable, that gives a choice of $32.95 for one, or two for $32,29 each.

    • The official PSU was recommended primarily because the original batch wasn't usb-c standards compliant and only worked 100% with dumb usb -c power supplies. The new version has that hardware bug fixed so any standard compliant usb-c psu will work. 2.0A is highly recommended but not necessary if you are not using a lot of peripherals. My friend bought from this listing a week ago and yesterday confirmed that this is the new version. Which is not to guarantee that 100% of the stock they have is the new version. But unless they were hoarding stock throught the worst of shortages or received some old stock mixed in with new stock. I think it's safe to assume that this is the good version.

      • +1

I have read in some reviews that the minimum recommended is 2.4A. I had power issues on mine with less than 3A rated psu so ended up buying the official one (rated 3A) no more psu issues

      • 5V 3A is recommended (if you really want to use up all the USB ports and will connect to multiple SSDs).

USB-C power cable. Majority of android phone cables are not e-marked so they will work. Apple's USB-C/USB-C cable is e-marked so it won't work with old boards. However, the ones selling now shouldn't have the issue. To verify it though, you will need to use a USB-C cable that's e-marked.

    • Just use a phone charger (18W pd USB C charger)

Core Electronics has had this model in stock for several weeks. It no longer shows up on rpilocator site for core electronics.

The pi 3 with 512mb RAM may also still be in stock at Core Electronics.

  • Whilst I would like to buy a Pi4, I find that it is hard to justify the expense unless the need for it is to complete an electronic project - but if the need is to build a small form-factor PC for a mini server, etc - one of those thin clients which can be had for about the same price (if not cheaper) is a better deal - power consumptions is of course slightly higher but it is not significantly higher.

  • Not a deal

    You said it

  • Not a deal. RRP is 35USD, which is ~50AUD inc GST + some overhead for importing them.

The following stores have a lower list price, but no stock:

    • +2

I think the 35USD RRP was for 1GB RAM version, RRP was recently increased to 45USD for 2GB variant.

It's currently the cheapest RPi4, you can't compare it with shops with no stock.

    • +2

Lower price + no stock = not a lower price.

I would resist buying from Core Electronics.

I bought a case with fan for my Pi and the fan failed in a few months. All sorts of questions and then said I don't need it because the Pi will shut down before damage. Refused the claim. For $45 I decided to live with it rather the angst to pursue it further. Online comments showed similar issues with warranty by others.

    • Good to know this sort of thing.

    • No issues with them and turns up fast, best price etc.
I did buy the official 7 inch touchscreen and case direct from raspberry pi though.

  • Thanks op grabbed one, been waiting on a price drop, these are still selling for $250+ on eBay.

Will make a nice Octoprint server for my printers and a good excuse to try out Docker to run multiple printers off one Pi.

    • Checkout Docker, but you can do multiple printers without it - just have to copy the config folder (and a couple other steps which I can't remember at the moment).
