Hi, long time lurker, first time poster. Been looking for a Google Pixel 6A for a while and saw that MyDeal.com.au has a limited time deal of $529.00 plus small delivery fee. So phoned up Officeworks and got them to price beat which made final price $509.15

  • Bought one recently, mainly because of the camera.
I find the photos are sharp and detailed but come out too dark.
    Good phone nonetheless

    • +1

Haven't accidentally knocked the exposure down or set it a bit funny?

  • +4

    Tempted purely because of GrapheneOS.

    • +4

Do it, been running it on the 6a since launch and it's been excellent. Stock Android (actually stock, not Google "stock"), haven't run into any of the common 6a problems (fingerprint/overheating etc), app compatibility is also excellent with sandboxed Google Play, and devs update on a very regular basis.

      • Got instruction set for installing it?

        • +4

GrapheneOS website has an install page, and just follow the instructions on the WebUSB-based installer guide, they made it pretty simple.

        • +3

If you're asking on OzBargain for instructions on installing custom software for your phone, it's not for you - leave it stock.

      • Any issue with using the stock camera app on Graphene?

        • +1

No real issues, although admittedly I haven't really used the camera much at all (have an A7III lmao). Image quality according to the devs/forums is on par with Google's, although if you're still finding it not up to scratch, you can use Google's app with the aforementioned sandboxed compatibility layer.

      • Do banking apps work on GrapheneOS?

    • With the GrapheneOS do you get a lot more security options over the stock?

      • +2

If i remember correctly it doesn't come with all Google apps preinstalled. This is good for someone who wants to cut Google out of their life.

Another benefit is being able to lock the bootloader after flashing. This makes passing safetynet and root detection software easier than other ROMs.

    Price beat are not deals

    • +8

The Mydeal.com.au is the deal, the Price Beat is just a little extra if you can bothered dealing with OW

      • +2

Then that should be the price in title

        • +4

          Fixed. Thanks

          • @Geek56: Shipping should be mentioned in the title.
            Unobtainable pricematch, removed.

  • +4

    Great DEAL , thanks

  • worth it from 4a 5G?

  • +4

Quote the actual deal. Mention the Price Match.

  • +1

Likely to have luck in store for this? Going to try now

    • Please let us know

      • +1

As per someone below there's no charcoal stock at OW and none on order, so can't match there

  • Was it $509.15 or $509.16?
    ASking for a friend.

  • No good, mydeal only has charcoal colour, Officeworks doesn't have charcoal. Couldn't get my local store to match.

Lack of info on that website, so looked it up myself elsewhere - 6GB RAM, not sure on the processor and GPU yet - Google Tensor, whatever that is - but according to JBHifi "Please note:You'll need a separate charger
The latest Pixel 6a phones don't ship with a charger or headphones in the box. All Pixel 6 accessories can be purchased separately"!

Don't know if that's true with this deal.

Does it have a standard headphone jack, or is it a single, do-it-all, USB-C port like on some previous Google devices?

    • Processor is Google's in house Tensor processor, not sure if that's also the GPU though

      • -2

Thanks, I was just updating my post.
Muddies the water with processors a bit, just as with Samsung's Exynos, I have no idea how to compare to Mediatek and SnapDragons.
I suppose i'll have to look closely at the benchmark tests.

    • No headphone jack, USB-C only

Spy phone. Google phone will become obsolete one day.

    • +1

Yeh, gotta get one of them non-spy phones, which brand do you prefer?

  • +1

For the people using it, how are the day light photos?

  • -6

@ Geek56 OW won't price beat this phone with MyDeal as they do not mention the phone model in the description.

    • +1

I had no issues getting a price beat by calling them today. OP also said they did the same in the description.

  • +1

This my deal.com is owned by Woolworths group?

    • +1

Yes and has had a major data breech.

  • -5

Problem with pixel 6a is a very obviously poor quality screen

    • +1

The screen is fine, I have one.

    • What is your specific issue with the screen? The only thing I've noticed is that after using my fiancee's 7 Pro, the fact that it's only 60Hz is quite noticeable.

      • -2

its not a high quality OLED it's a cheaper version colour is washed out not vivid but I guess for 500 you cannot expect too much these days. For 500 these days you're Lucky if you get high quslity toilet roll. Phone manufacturers use US$ as a gauge so this is a $349 US dollar phone which then gives the manufacturer some idea where to cut corners.

  • Dual sim?

    • Google doesn’t do dual sim.

      • +3

        I thought it is nano-sim + esim?

        • What about dim-sim?

  • +1

Have had a 6a since September. No issues at all, has same chip as Pixel 6 pro, very fast for a phone this cheap. Glare was an issue with 6 pro camera but it's not as bad with the 6a. Crushes my previous pixel 4, probably better than a pixel 5.

    • +1

And I don't really care about. Super fancy screen, looks pretty good to me.

  • Damn thats a good price, this or should I fork out for the 7?

    • Pixel 7 will be less than 750 in 6 months time.

  • +2

Price match with JB and use the perks voucher to lower the price to 479.

    • Jb only price match it at 529.

      • Spoke to three separate JBs on the phone and they refuse to match MyDeal

  • Do these still have the randomly cracking screen like the old Xperia 3's had years ago? It was all over the Pixel sub reddit when I looked last time.

  • +1

This is a great deal for the best camera in the world in a smartphone .. pixel 6a whips the iPhone 14 but the pixel 7 Pro isn't too far behind the pixel 6a

    https://youtu.be/LQdjmGimh04

  • How do people handle the lack of sd card?

    • +2

Agree.. I don't want to upgrade from my Samsung Galaxy S7 because of this! But I want a camera upgrade!

    • +1

Use the cloud services that are more reliable and secure and safer

      • +2

Which require $$ for yearly subscription, also since most of your stuff isn't saved locally it requires you have an expensive plan for lots of mobile data and also require you to have constant good reception to use.

        • +1

Of you have wifi at home the backup is done overnight when charging. If you don't have wifi I guess you need more data?

If you want essentially free google One, install the Google opinion rewards app and do some serveys.

  • -5

Stop telling people to request an unattainable price match.

  • +5

Was able to price match at JB and used with the save $50 with $500 spend perk.

Brought it down to $486, and paid with discounted GC’s.

    Happy with the purchase :)

  • +2

Anything more than $400 for this phone is no bargain.
There are heaps on marketplace (new, in sealed box) due to Optus free phone deal.
When I got one there was over 10 listings within half an hr drive.

Pick someone who looks normal, offer $400 and get them to get a letter from Optus verifying warranty (there is no physical receipt for the free phone).

Much easier than some of the stuffing around most OB people do with GC's and other things.

    • Got a link to an example? Thx

      • +2

        No affiliation
But here is one local to me for $400 from a FB search.
        https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1969863833355063/?…

      • +3

        There are heaps available.
Just do your own search in your area.

Ignore ones that've been opened unless super deal.
Ignore ones seller isn't willing to get email from Optus verifying warranty.
        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/452742/101356/optus_wa…

That letter is important for proof of purchase as phone will not have a receipt
However the main phone plan is used to tie the free phone back to verify purchase
        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/452742/101357/pixel_6a…

6a phones that have been flooding FB marketplace and Gumtree since the Optus free phone deal (deal can be found on OB search).

People are willing to sell cheap to cost average their plans down.
People are willing to negotiate given nil direct cost and due to large number of other items available.

        Don't pay more than $400

I bought this phone at JB Hi-Fi on the weekend and encountered an issue:

Whenever an app needs to use the camera, the app crashes and then after a few seconds, the phone restarts itself.

The Google camera app, Google Lens, Google Translate, other camera apps, all crash the phone. So I'm guessing the problem is the camera hardware.

I've looked online for a solution but they're stupid suggestions like restart the phone, clear the cache, update the app, etc. and not an actual fix.

I returned it the next day and the JB Hi-Fi staff knew about the issue and issued a full refund at my request (I don't want to chance it with a replacement). The staff said it's a common thing that happens in batches of the phone - they'll have no issues with a certain batch but then have an unusually large number of returns with another batch.

As such, I'm going to be negging Pixel 6a deals to warn others. There seems to be a lot of positive reviews and an advertising/marketing campaign about how amazing the camera is, which persuaded me to buy one, only for the camera to be faulty!

Anyway, the purpose of the neg is to make consumers aware. If you do decide to buy a Pixel, test the camera first before you do the phone data transfer process (take a few photos, switch between the lens, open a photo and edit it, etc. It'll crash doing one of those things if there is a problem). You'll save yourself a few hours of transferring data and troubleshooting…

Other comments: For me, Google Lens and Google Translate crash instantly as soon as I start the app, as they launch with the camera turned on ready to capture. Another symptom is that the back of the phone near the camera bump gets really hot within minutes of using the camera.

The deal is still on with a coupon on the my deal website for an extra $10 off and with free shipping at the moment. I managed to get a price beat @ ow which brought it down to $493.05. I went and purchased ultimate gift cards at Coles which has 20x flybuys point which brings it down further.
