[Back order] Panasonic LUMIX S5II Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera (Body Only) $2699.10 + Delivery @ JB Hi-Fi

150
AFTERHOURSJAN

Not a bad deal for a newly released Lumix S5II. Sadly doesn't work on the S5IIx since it's still marked as pre-order.

Delivery for this is still on the 3rd of March. However, if you want the one with the 20-60 kit lens, it would be available next week. Great lens btw.

This is probably the best mid-range camera right now since they updated the AF.

  • I am trying to choose between:
    Fujifilm - X-H2
    Sony A7IV
    Or this.

I will be doing dog photography, and would like to do macro.

Finding it super hard to make a decision

    • +1

If you go no exisiting glass and don’t care about video I’d go Sony.

    • +1

The Sony A7IV animal-eye focus will be the superior autofocusing solution. I would imagine this would be especially useful when taking photos of dogs. Otherwise it just comes down to cost, size of camera, and video capabilities for deciding between them all.

      • Yeah that’s what I thought.

There’s a 15% Sony lens promotion when purchasing a Sony body, which the 10% also applies to…. But the glass range on JB is abysmal.

There’s also a redemption for a 80gb Sony memory card worth $399 RRP.

So it’s super compelling. The only thing stopping me from purchasing is I can’t see a good lens to couple with it.

If they had the new 20-70mm at 25% off I would pull the trigger in a heart beat.
Do you guys see a decent lens for this deal?

      • A7IV - $3149 ($3499 RRP)
        Sony 85mm f1.8 - $519.55 ($849)
Free Sony CEA-G80T 80GB CFexpress Type A Memory Card ($369 RRP)

        $3680.63 Total - ($4717 RRP)

Not sure if worth, was hoping the body would be cheaper.

Plus I think the lens is backordered until April

The S5II is $500 cheaper (at rrp) and kills the A7 lineup in video. You can watch reviews to see how the auto eye detect works, looked good enough to me. Panasonic is probably the best manufacturer at maintaining firmware. I'd agree with others that the only reason to choose Sony is for the lens range/availability.

        • In the same shoes as you and ended up getting the A7IV over the weekend from Teds for $3,175 with a second hand 24-105mm f4 ($1,099), new 35mm 1.8 ($829 price match) and have on order the 16-35mm f4 PZ ($1399 via ebay Camera House). I'm a photographer getting into video and S5II/Canon R6II were the alternatives (didn't consider Fujifilm) but ended up with Sony due to its lens system (I come from Nikon and this has been an expensive exercise so I don't want to switch again), superior autofocus, Catalyst Browse post stabilisation and I follow a few pros which all use Sony. Wouldn't have made this move if I stuck with photography as my main gripe with Nikon is its video shooting shortcomings.

Advantages of R6II is mainly shooting 4K @ 60fps uncropped and better rolling shutter performance. For the Panasonic, superior stabilisation (reviews online show gimbal like results handheld which beats the Sony) and I like their F1.8 prime lens collection (18/24/35/50/85mm) which are all similar size/weight so is perfect for gimbal work (ie: no need to rebalance when changing lens). Do you also shoot video? If so, you can't go wrong with any of these cameras so depends on what you value more.

Some thoughts on using the A7IV after a couple of days:
          * The menu system is intense and so much more detailed than my Nikon camera (Z5) but after you get used to it (not without following some excellent Youtube setup videos from the experts), I love the amount of customisation available and it is a very solid hybrid camera.
          * It overheats! Playing around with the menus without shooting got the camera pretty hot and it did automatically shut down (I was playing with the menus extensively though). However, I did some 4K shooting yesterday and didn't have any issues so hopefully it was a once off.

          • @avivadz: Interesting!

Nice set up you have, did you redeem the memory card?

            I don’t shoot video,

            • @Zodinn: Yeap, did that straight away for the Cfexpress after purchase as the offer ends 31 Jan though if you are shooting photos only, you probably won't need such fast speeds and a normal SDXC card will do. I must say the Panasonic at this price does look tempting but for your needs I will look at autofocus performance as that is crucial for nailing those shots for fast moving pets!

    • I have the X-H2 and Canon R6 II. I think you should go with A7IV simply for the autofocus. X-H2 is an improvement over X-T4 but it's no where as confident and reliable as Canon/Sony.

      • I would almost go the R6 II as the autofocus looks amazing, the fact you can keep it on auto and it will detect the subject (dog, bird, car, etc).
The lenses are outrageously expensive though.

If I were to go that route I guess I would buy the RF 24-105mm f4 with the body, and with the 10% off that’s $5330!

Versus the Sony above which is $3680 (with a CF express memory card).

        • Just saw the kit version of the R6 II w/ 24-105mm f4 on sale, so with the 10% off on top it would be $4895.

          What do you think?

I don’t touch video to be fair, just photography, mainly portraits, dogs, people, landscape as well.
I would like to do Macro in the future as well

          • @Zodinn: To be honest the Canon third party lens issue that we all aware makes it a bit difficult to recommend if you don't do this to get paid. It's $3200 for a 24-70/2.8 and $3600 for 70-200/2.8. The 100/2.8 Macro is reasonable in price. Sony on the other hand you have a lot of good options, and cheaper with more discounts. RF is a good system if you are ready to pay that much.

      • I could go the sony 70-200mm f4 though…

        • You could also think about S5 II with the Sigma L lenses. They are pretty good too now with PDAF.

  • Does anyone have thoughts on the Canon R7? I'm after a new camera to do photography but also want to be able to shoot 4K60 video to match with my drones. I have an old Canon 60D with a few EF lenses. So basically, whatever I get I would have to get new lens, though I could use the EF lenses with an adaptor. I also want something relatively small. I could expand my budget to this but not sure which direction to go with.

  • Thank you! This is a very good deal on a new model. Nice work!

  • Just found this with a lens kit which looks like a decent price.
