Well played! BPC are very strong for listing parts and making sure they are more aligned with each other. Rather than storing your data on a no name SSD, you get to find out what parts you are buying.

      • The problem with a lot of big build retailers is they push so many units that they have a hard time sticking to a particular brand, it's just whatever they can source stock of that week.

I will agree that a lot of them put in substandard SSD similar to a WD green to rip ya off though.

      • You've never heard of PNY?

      • +1

Thank you :D It takes lots of effort for our software team to develop the specification tab thanks for the kind words!

    • +1

      Thanks for sharing the list!

New toys are disproportionately more expensive than what new toys use to cost (performance per dollar)

I kind of want to upgrade and this is the system I’d probably buy but I rather vote with my wallet and say no to these.

    • +2

Not entirely… I spent ~2500 on a 8800 ultra and core 2 duo when they were released back about 2007.

      • +1

8800 Ultra! What a beast! It was like the 4090 Ti of the time. Nostalgia overload.

        • +3

So realistically equivalent to a $4K-$4,5 machine today? (Which NVidia didn’t even release 4090ti yet. This is based on 4090)

Which even taking inflation into account a $2,5k 4099ti system should be 3,5k today if the value was similar, right?

I don’t know why people happily ignore the value statement is far worse and downvote me lol.

          • +3

@Larsson: Yeah ignore the down votes. People would rather just click the down vote than actually engage with the comment. You see a lot of defending the corporations here on ozb. Try saying anything bad about the Pixel 7 series which are absolute shit phones, and you'll see the wrath of ozb.

The 8800 Ultra used to be the most expensive gpu for a few years. Even after the release of 9600 GT which was a better performing GPU, it was still more expensive for some reason. But even at its price peak, it was less than US $800. So I'm not sure why nitens had to pay $2500 for it. False memory maybe?

A 4080 is nowhere near how premium the 8800 Ultra was at the time of release. A more fair comparison would be the 8600 GT, which at the time of release was under US $300.. So yeah, the prices have risen.

            • +1

@DontNeedThis: Not a false memory… 2.5k was the full system price without peripherals. Was comparing to the ~3k system price here. The 8800 ultra wasn't really like a 4900ti, it was more like the 4800 here, or maybe an as yet unknown and unreleased 4800ti, in terms of generational line up. Yes it was the best at the time, but the delta between it and the GT and GTS was only marginal. Not like the 4800 to 4900 delta at all.

      • i think my Pentium 4 cost more then $2k back in the day

        • +2

Yeah.. exactly. This looks to be a well spec'd machine that will do almost everything you could ask of it for 3k.

Is it expensive? Yes. Would it be better if it was cheaper? Absolutely. But people's griping about things being more expensive compared to something in the past is getting tiring. It's not 3080 launch day any more, just buy or don't buy. Or at least comment constructively on the price like @Testeagle did in the first post.

  • +1

Any chance of GPU downgrade options? 4070Ti/6950xt/7900xt etc

    • +9

      Hi,

We have just added the option to change the GPU to a 7900 XT.

      • +1

damn, where was this deal a month ago :D

spent over $4k for missus' rig that's very similar

        • +7

Damn, you got missus who plays games? Multiplayer lan party at home everyday?

        • +9

After buying my first PC in forever last year, I quickly learnt to stop looking at prices because the speed that the value of your build drops is insane.

          • @beefsandwich: I bought 6 months ago and the price of my components hasn't reduced at all

        • +8

I managed to have rustle together an "open on Christmas day" full 7700x and XFX 7900 XTX Merc build with better ram & AIO for $3350. Took all my ozbargain skills but pretty happy with it still holding up

  • This is a good deal - I've budgeted my 'ozbargained' ITX build to come to $2,139 with the only difference being (Asus X670 mobo (better?) 64GB 5600mhz ram (better) and a 6800xt (worse))

    • Why so much RAM?

      • Maybe they're content creating.

      • +12

        so you can use chrome

        • Lol!

      • So I don't need to change to 2x32gb sticks in future!

        • Should get 1024GB then.

      • Minesweeper

    • Can you PM me your parts list? I've been looking at putting together an ITX rig but it usually seems to end up way more than $2200

      • count me in too

        • @bopter12 @Mines
Sorry guys, forgot to add the cost of the case ($299) so looking closer to 2.5k

          Asus X670e ($642)
          7600x ($395)
          6800xt ($840)
RAM/SSD TBC but budgeting 450/150 respectively

          • +2

@DV0993: personally i would spend a little less on the mobo and use that money towards a better gpu (3080)

            • +1

@Mines: You are right - I was going to go for the B650 but for a mere $90 more I figured why not.

I'm taking the opposite to standard approach and plan on upgrading the CPU and GPU when the am5 platform is end of life hence the large spend on the motherboard/RAM - Also didn't want to buy in to an expensive GPU in this market and the 6800 xt already put me over budget

Edit: I did a solid side by side comparison of the B650/X670 and from what I can tell, the X670:
              - Has a few additional ports and includes USB 4
              - Has a better audio codec (this is a plus for me)
              - Has slightly better cooling capabilities
              - Has 'smarter' technology for fan control/overclocking
              - Comes with the ROG Strix Hive (may be beneficial for some people but is not mandatory)
              - Comes with a 'ROG FPS Card'

If the price difference was greater I would go with the B650

              • @DV0993: B650i options hundreds of dollars cheaper..?

                • @chrisandrew: Asus B650i is not.
                  MSI doesnt have the audio codec I want;
Seen some average reviews on the Gigabyte
Some really positive and negative reviews on the asrock

                  • @DV0993: Ok fair enough. The reviews arent too crash hot of the alleged premium audio on the board you're looking at, either. But overall it looks like a solid board. Very exxy but what can you do in the current market.

                    • @chrisandrew: Yeah - I'm not sure what the alternative is though - Unfortunately there isn't much choice when it comes to am5 ITX boards

                      • @DV0993: Very sad times. The price premium to build with less features and less materials is a joke isn't it!?

                        • @chrisandrew: Absolutely. Mind you its been 15 years since my last upgrade 😂

                  • @DV0993: For good quality audio output you should be bypassing the motherboard entirely and using a USB DAC. Get a cheaper board and spend the savings on one of those instead.

AMD have stated that AM5 is supposed to be around for “at least” 3 product generations, it doesn’t really make sense to spend extra on a top of the line board now.

As we found with AM4 that although you can upgrade the bios and use newer CPUs you don’t get the best performance and you are missing a bunch of features by the time the socket reaches EOL.

Better to buy a midrange board now & a midrange board at EOL & flip off your old board on a marketplace than to spend high end money now, memory controller will be much better on the 3rd generation boards etc.

    • 64gb ram is insane!

  • +5

So what are people doing for optical audio out these days? I find it bizarre that many boards don't have it.

And sound cards are rare.. when they do exist, the software is a buggy mess. Asus, Creative, I'm looking at you.

    • +1

Asus, Creative, I'm looking at you

      welcome to 1990

      • EVGA gave it a go too… what a laugh on the software side

      • +11

Having to manually tell every game that you have a SoundBlaster… good times

        • +4

Oh you wanted to USE your soundcard?

Sorry I only like soundcards on IRQ 5.

    • +5

Unrelated to this build because I'm going with an Intel build, but one of the reasons I picked a Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X motherboard is because of its optical out port. Some other boards don't have the port itself, but have spdif headers internally on the board, requiring the use of a separate spdif out plate like this one.

    • +1

Been using Creative sound cards since the mid 90's, maybe I'm lucky but I've rarely had issues. Currently rocking a ZxR from 2013 which works great on Win 11

      • I also have a ZxR and so far so good on Win11 even with build upgrades.

On Windows 10 every time it upgraded build (from like win10 1903 to 1903, 2004, 21h1 etc) it would put on an incorrect driver from Windows Update where I had no sound and had to manually re-download it from the Creative website.

    • -3

I built a 5900x rig 6 months ago and my x570 board has optical out…. Guess it's a new gen thing.

    • +2

External Dac's, class D amps and passive bookshelf speakers.

      $3k desktops deserve proper sound.

    • For good quality audio output you should be bypassing the motherboard entirely and using a USB DAC.

  • +10

This is the most all-rounded build I've seen in awhile. Sent to a bunch of friends, hopefully that'll convert to some sales for you guys. Good job.

    • Cheers mate!

  • Will BPC randomly increase the price like the 3060ti PC last week? Lol.

    • -1

Why do you think their price rises are random?

      • Random when too many people getting a good deal.

        • +1

Probably ran out of stock of whatever component and the new stock cost more to buy. FIFO accounting mate.

When the machines are made to order you only have a finite supply of parts.

    • The price adjustment generally happens when one of the parts runs out or the new cost of the stock increased, just like Agrent mentioned below :)

  • -4

Too expensive PSU but looks a good deal.

  • +14

So the price difference between a 4090 and 4080 gets you an entire PC… Sobering.

    • +2

After years of triple prices (or worse) on high end GPUs, you just start to lose perspective completely.

I'm no dummy, I know that they can't ignore the bottom 95% of the market forever. They're only make 5 times the profit on these, not 20 times.

But when they drag it on like this, the nonsensical lie that this is just the new normal, as if PC gaming from now on will just be for the top 5%, seems almost plausible, and it's tempting to consider buying one of these ripoff cards.

Price anchoring is such a stupidly simple strategy, but it really works on some people.

  • +2

The graphics card upgrade worth it for 55?

    or the case for 99?

i have not heard much about the new amd cpus, so unsure of that aswell.

So far these spec's look good for price point, good to see some competition to TF.

  • +5

Can someone please explain what the relevance of the '(with PCIe 5.0 cable)' is alongside the PSU upgrade?

EDIT: Added a 'please' to my question <3

    • +6

The cable upgrade looks nicer as its one cable instead of 3 cables that would stick out of the GPU when connected. Also there was an incident where the cable provided by NVIDIA melted although I am not sure if they've resolved that issue

For reference this is the provided cable: NVIDIA stock
Reference for an upgraded cable: Upgraded Cable

      • The 'resolution' was just to make sure that you plug the 12VHPWR connector in all the way. The cables that were having issues weren't fully in, and the click you get off the new connector when it's seated correctly is way too subtle compared to the older 8 pin.

One suggestion is to plug the card end of the connector in even before you put the card in the system, but when I installed a friend's 4070Ti recently I didn't find that necessary. Just felt for the subtle click, and double-checked with a torch that there was no gap

        • Yeah I believe people pulling on it, tightening them later with cable management, pulled them out just enough to cause issues.

        • +1

The click you get is more subtle but more worringly is the locking isn't as good and just having the side panel push against the cable is enough to pull it loose from the card.

It's a terrible connector compared to the old style ones. People blaming user error are missing the point, no other cable is this hard to connect (except the stupid RGB header that doesn't lock at all and just comes loose, the pre-builds I have got from Centrecom have it hot glued in place lol) so it is really on the manufacturer to compensate any damages caused by shoddy design.

    • Saves you using a clumsy adapter that has had some issues with poor installation.

  • Any chance of offering an Asus motherboard option… I'm looking to run add the ThunderboltEX4 AIC. Thanks.

    • Hi SurfSpider,

Please PM me for more information.

      Cheers,
      BPC Team

      • +1

There is a typo on list OP. Needs to be ryzen 5 not ryzen 7 if it's 7600

        • +2

          Thanks for reminding us! Fixed

  • I'm really tempted by this BUT, computers are not my forte.

From previous techfast deals many people were recommending specific upgrades to better match parts. How is this build? Am I leaving performance on the table with the 7900X? (1440p desk gaming, 4k couch gaming)

    • -1

Huh? The cpu doesn't matter for 4k gaming. And the framerate at 1440p going to be massive so even if it was cpu limited it'd be inconsequential.

      • Right, that’s how I understood it: that GPU was the current limiter with 4K, but that CPU was the bottleneck for lower resolutions.

So, 4K couch gaming isn’t an issue, but how is the default combo for 1440p?

        • Going by this tool, it says about a 36% bottleneck for 1440p (not sure on accuracy of this tool, so do take with a grain of salt)
          https://pc-builds.com/bottleneck-calculator/result/1jb1cy/3/…

          • +1

@Testeagle: 36% of 400fps leaves you with 250 fps. I'm exaggerating, but there's no real world difference unless you have a very high refresh rate monitor and are convinced that every hz matters.

Note: There will be occasional games that only care about cpu (strategy games) but even those are still going to be good!

            • @justtoreply: The question was asked about the combo, it's not ideal given the bottleneck for 1440p, but you're also correct, with that gear at 1440p the fps is gonna be very high. So the combo would do great at 1440p.

        • +1

1440p you're going to have blazing fast framerate no matter if its cpu limited.

You will find it struggles with 4k more… But it's still a 4080. Doesn't get much better than that.

I'm quite comfortable with my 3080 at 4k… (my monitor is 60hz refresh tho)… And my cpu is a 3600 (not even an x)!

          • @justtoreply: For when it struggles there's always DLSS, the artifacts will be less noticeable from the couch.

You could also play your games in 1080p as that upscales directly into 4K resolution it shouldn't look blurry and you won't notice a huge difference in quality from the sitting distance.

      • That is absolutely not true, an I'm sick of hearing it parroted.

Especially with a 4080 or higher you absolutely can still be CPU bottlenecked at 4k.

And if you're spending ~$800 on a monitor and ~$2000 on a GPU why are you skimping on a CPU.

I have a 4080, 5600x @ 4k and every game that is considered CPU heavy has my 5600x leaving my 4080 at 80-90%. Tarkov for example my GPU is only 60-70% utilization.

If I don't max out settings I can still hit a CPU bottleneck in a ton of games.

I don't think people realize just how absolutely insanely powerful high end 4000 series is. Yeah you've seen the numbers in reviews, but the playing field of PC gaming is being flipped on its head. The old adage of "buy the best GPU you can and don't worry too much about anything else" is now bad advice. Plenty of games are CPU and core heavy now.

        • +1

Thank you for adding your insight. I know about the things I know, and this isn’t one of them.

    • No, 7900x and 4080 is about the best computer you can build right now. The only performance left on the table would be going to a 4090. (For gaming, productivity is another question)

      • Ok. Thank you

  • +3

Lovely deal, far better value than an Allied Gaming prebuilt which I just saw pop up as an ad in my facebook feed:
    Ryzen 7 5700 + RTX 3080 (10GB)
Guess how much is advertised for…
    $2499

And they have the audacity to say “a deal this hot cannot last long“…

    https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0J5X7dDWgaU…

it’s at least $500 overvalued. Especially when compared to this deal.

    • +2

Techfast have Allied for the suckers who get their prebuilts from PCCG and Aftershock.

    • +2

i was always thinking about commenting on their posts on fb linking BPC or techfasts builds for 600 less, what do ya reckon?

    • Different company comes with different pricing strategy :)

  • +1

the case upgrade worth the extra 99? i would want a decent case if i spend that much money.

  • +1

Hi rep, any indication on lead times?

    Cheers

    • Also curious! Would love a new PC but don't want to wait months
