    Wax the windows first.

Ammonia generic windex on any glass without film tint, and on all exterior glass.

Ammonia free generic windex on any tint.

I adore detailing, often losing 6 hours of my night into it, so I have "my brands" I like; but Ill never understand how any of them sell a glass cleaner.

Its literally demineralised water, and a surfacant.

    There's no trick here.

Wax fills the imperfections, and then you remove literally anything on the surface.

    Simple.

    • +1

wax the windows?? The normal wax or one of the spray on quick waxes

      • +2

Either works great. Just be sparing.

Amonia will break down anything on the exterior of the glass.

You will ABSOLUTELY get streaks if you leave any on the clean surface.

But if you get a jewelers magnifier, you can see the tiny imperfections the wax fills.

A wax filled scratch is clearer than a scratch.

          Me <Aging non-spectacled eyes>:
          Hmmm,…car windows look nice now

Car Detailer <Using jeweler's magnifier to inspect car windows>:
Hmmm…the wax has filled the tiny imperfections now.

          Haha

          • +1

@whyisave: To be fair, I only own one because it's cool to own and inspect things once or twice. You never ACTUALLY do that as part of the process :P
Lots of people swear by that 'NuPolish' stuff for windows.

You should NEVER let it near paint, as it's mostly silicones, but it IS clearer than standard wax on glass.
The only reason I don't support that method, is I find removing silicone from the 'good glass' harder than removing wax. Lots of things remove oil based products like wax, not much removes silicone.

        Daniel Son?

    • Don't wax the windows. That's how you get streaks.

    • i thought waxing will cause issues the moment you wind the windows down?

      • yeah don't get wax on rubbers - sounds like it's more effort and problems for the potential gains.

I guess windex woul do for most people.. $3.30

Depends how good your car is ha.

        • +1

also depends on what you value as your free time to be. there are times i don't care if the car hasn't been washed for a year. There are times I will detail every other weekend because i like the shine.

generic 'x' brand car shampoo would work most times, the more important part is not having dirt on your mitts/sponges/towels and you dragging it through the paint work. the fixes are more tedious than the prevention.

          • +1

@slowmo: Agree mate, depends how you feel and how long it's been .. fairly therapudic sometimes. Used to use (and still have) good brand stuff, but since not having a super good car don't really care too much - good to do clay/wax/polish onece a year or something.

    • If you wax the windscreen wouldn't you see halo effects on lights shinning in?

      • +1

You need to wipe it really clean. I did once, and I used 3 - 4 microfibre towel to clean the wax. To my experience, it was good as long as the windows weren't wet.

      • Nope. Only if you leave a layer on the windscreen. You're simply filling imperfections.

    • Tried to wax (biought paste-like and thick liquid one) after washing the window with mild soap.
      Tried to use clay

Still have streaks on my windows :(

    • +1

i know SFA about detailing but wouldn't mind learning a little, do you have a particular resource you'd recommend?

    • Any tips for the interior of the windscreen? Detailing hobbyist myself and never quite solved it despite watching a bunch of videos

      • +1

we have to come in terms with the fact that it's going to be dusty and also static cling will happen.

i keep a micro fibre cloth specifically for cleaning the interior windscreen (only the windscreen) to cut out glare for this reason.

  • +1

Might be a silly Q but how does this differ from something like Windex? Does this make your window water repellent after applying it as well?

    • +1

      I'd like to know too!

    • +2

Price is the obvious difference. This stuff costs $23.78 per litre, Windex costs $4.24 a litre at Bunnings.

    • +3

      It doesn't

  • Safe to use on tinted windows?

    • One of the reviews says this:

“As the title says I would of been better not using this product as now it looks like the tint is coming off on one of my windows”

    • you normally just use a wet cloth on the tint side… harsh cleaners would mess it up.

i use windex on the outside and side mirrors but i think this is a good deal.

getting one to test if it helps with water beading so i can save one more step in the process.

      • I usually use a moistened chamois to wipe/clean the inside and just use the car shampoo on the outside while washing the car. Does the job enough.

        • really depends on what you are after. I don't use chamois nowadays. Older cars and paints i don't care about, yes i still use them. if i'm lazy, i just snow cannon the whole lot, rinse off and call it a day.

windex is just 1st step of my cleaning for windows.. but that's only when i feel like i'm up to detailing the car.

          • @slowmo: If I'm going to detail the car, I use the Autoglym Car Glass Polish if not, simply use car shampoo and be done with. Never used a snow cannon and simply used the tried and trusted bucket and hose and dry with a big sucker. Chamois is mainly used for door jams, mags, motor and such.

            • @pacificstorm: snow cannon is basically (imo) a car shampoo step that you do when your back hurts. lol. to me, it's the same thing but faster.

used to do detailing at a place where there's a dedicated air compressor to blow off the water beads, so no cloths needed even.

everyone's got their preferences. end of the day, it's a car to me. I just happen to occasionally like the mirror finish so for those days, all the "toys", masking tapes etc comes out.

              • @slowmo: I use a small electrical Ozito air blower and lately a portable Bosch air blower to get to those hard to reach wet areas.

                • @pacificstorm: i was thinking about getting one, but can't justify as i already had a blow/vac taking up space in the garage. unfortunately its not for car cleaning purposes unless i hate myself (and the car).

                  • @slowmo: Mate, the Ozito cost me $25 methinks from Bunnings more than five years ago and it's money well spent I tell ya. 👌

                    • @pacificstorm: unfortunately no $25 ozito nowadays… they since doubled the price… and my main issue is the lack of garage space to keep them. probably have to clean out the stuff that "i might need this later someday" first. lol

  • Anyone use for regular windows?

Considering buying the 5 litres from bulk buy from other retailers

My Bosch window vacuum leaves streaks

    • Me! I use it to clean the large balcony window

    • +2

I've cleaned the shower with mine. Works well but have to say it smells just like Windex.

    • +1

Demineralised water, with a splash of Methylated Spirits.

If it's still streaking, your window has oil on it (from exhasut fumes from a nearby road or such); in which case, straight metho and a paper towel first.

    Here, save yourself $8

    • cheers done.

    • Bought 2 too thx

  • +2

This is a pretty decent window cleaner, seems to get rid of the gunk on windows pretty well (I feel it works better than windex).
I've been using one of the ceramic spray cleaners for the outside of windows though as it makes the water just bead off, so I just use fast glass for the inside of windows (I got it in one of the bucket deals with a bunch of other products).

Just buy a bulk bottle of isopropyl alcohol. It's the best stuff and shits on this.

    • +2

if people don't know what they are doing, RIP rubber trims.

    • someone suggested using methylated spirits on windows, and i've been doing this, and happy with the results

  • I am using this and very happy with it. Got 2 more bottles. Thank you OP.

  • How does it compare to Meguiar's glass cleaner? Not super impressed.

  • Bowdens from SCA is by far the best Window Cleaner ive used. Expensive, but it works. No problem on tints as well.

Further to what I wrote -> Seriously just buy this
    https://www.melbournesolvents.com.au/products/isopropyl-alco…

Bought from these guys a few times and quick delivery.
$25 for 5L of iso! Cleans better than this stuff and lasts AGES in comparison to $15 for some watered down Windex for 500ml…

They even have 5L of tyre shine for $40. Pretty much identical to the Bowden's stuff I had been wasting money on.
(Not a shill for these guys, just worth looking at products that are as good as name brand stuff out there for SUBSTANTIALLY lower cost).

    • +2

It's good value, and good stuff, but I still don't understand HOW they continue to get away with calling it 100%.
100% isopro needs to be in a vacuum sealed container, and drops the INSTANT you expose it to any air.

A close friend works for one of the actual refining plants, and they literally CANNOT make better than 99.8%, because their bottling room isn't in a vacuum.

It hardly matters for this use; but false advertising always just irks me.

    • This can't be good for the seals though surely.

      • Seals?

        • The rubber seals around the glass.

          • -1

            @pauly85: Then don't touch the seals/rubbers…

      • +1

it's not. some newbie is going to read that and ruin their rubbers.

if you are careful, and know what you are doing, almost every household cleaning item can be used to clean a car.

cost / value proposition. do you spend X getting car products or do you save Y using household products and potentially spend Z on restoration/repair.

each individuals have their own risk thresholds… so ymmv

      • It's not and some (profanity) recommending it
