Sim slutting Belong and boost is still a better deal..and needless to say.. Network.

Edit: though granted, bit more stuffing around and preparation involved.

    • +7

One advantage there is over that is that Kogan Mobile supports eSIM whereas Belong and BOOST does not.

      • Fair call.

      • @hollykryten, was wondering if Kogan eSim supports Apple Watch Ultra?

        • I don't know as i don't own any Apple gear apart from an Apple TV 4K.

        • Apple Watch (any gen) requires number sharing.

I think number sharing’s a feature of postpaid services only.

      • When I see someone say this it makes it sound like eSIM capable phones no longer have a physical SIM slot… is that correct? (If they do still have a SIM slot why does it matter? Isn't it like a non-smoker saying they refuse to drive a particular car because it doesn't have a cigarette lighter!?)

        • I don't know if it's still applicable, but most phones bought from a Oz provider only had a single sim slot, even if the same phone supports 2 overseas. If you ever travel, or sell stuff on gumtree, 2 slots is great. Keep your main active, and the second for either a local sim (always cheaper than roaming, unless it's on the companies dime) or for a disposable sim for gumtree, so you don't get messages in a month at three Am, cos someone's phone got hacked and your number sold to telemarketing.

I use mine a lot for sim slutting. Aldi mobile main number for telstra coverage and 15 bucks a year to keep one number active for bank and purchase texts, and whatever cheap for a load of data…

Esims make it easier/possible. Bring em on!

    • +1

Sim slutting, I'll never see porting the same way again…

  • +2

Kogan served me well for years but had to change to Lebara for the included international calls. It's a pity Kogan don't include these.

    • -7

You didn't do your research right before switching providers. As an extra $5 per month gets you international calls (to 10 countries) on Kogan Mobile. It's called the International Calls Pack. And there's also the $10 or $15 packs for more countries. So yes Kogan Mobile can have international calls if you pay for it through one of the international calls pack addon.

      https://www.koganmobile.com.au/plans/mobile/international-ca…

So those who want international calls that's the way to get it through Kogan Mobile. It's not included for free on the base mobile plans.

      • +9

How would you know what research I did before switching providers?

"An extra $5" makes it clear it's not included, it's an add on.

I got more data for cheaper and got international included with Lebara.

      • +1

Thank you so much for pointing this out! My Mrs has been chewing me up for putting her onto a plan without included international calls. I can at least fix up one of the two issues she has with Kogan Mobile (the second being reception… Boost was better as she now travels between 3 work locations rather than the 1 location when she was on the Vodafone network. I'll likely put her back on Boost when Kogan nears expiration but that's still many months away).

        • My Mrs has been chewing me up

I can see why.. quite disappointing.. time to hand back the OZB license?

  • +5

Kogan uses Vodafone network because I know I'm not the only one who needs to consider the network. :)

    • +6

I have terrible coverage with Vodafone in my area, not sure I can even use the 500gb in time lol!

      • +1

It was almost completely useless in TAS

        • I went five-ish years ago. Telstra had the best service. Optus struggled in some areas.

        • +6

Pretty sure the deal is for people in Australia

  • +1

Tempting.. if I didn't have a woolies in town I think i'd jump to this. 🤔

  • Since Kogan provides eSIMs, wondering if anyone has used it in an Apple Watch?

    • +3

You can't because it's prepaid, and no prepaid with any provider offers number sharing, yet.

  • +4

Signed up at the start of Jan and tried the $165 deal in 3 different states on an iPhone 13 Pro eSim

All hopeless including in the CBD max 20mbit average 2-5mbit

It's like this service receives the absolute lowest priority for Vodafone data

Lucky when I complained I was able to receive a refund upon porting back out to Boost

    • +1

I took this out in WA and the speeds were better than what boost could get within the CBD/metro area.

It was as soon as you went outside of it the whole thing fell apart. Back to boost for the reception i go.

    • +2

I get between 200 to 300Mbps on 4G on the Voda network where I live in Melbourne, so it'll be different for everyone, like every network.
In fact where I live and mostly use my phone, Voda is better than Telstra coverage, which has a dead spot in an area that is densely populated.

      • +1

I did too on Voda and I would expect it to be similar to Telstra / Boost

This is not the full Voda network it's a severely de-prioritised reseller network

At least with Boost the priority is higher

        • +2

I've switched between Kogan and Voda directly and never noticed any difference. Kogan now also gives customers access to Voda 5G.
Things have changed quite a lot in recent months.

          • -1

@SimAus007: According to below comment there may be a difference between 12 month and 1 - 3 months plans that makes 12 months the bottom feeder plan

            • @s3n: You could be right. Would be interesting to find out more about this.
Could be because of how much data these 12 month plans offer and if someone went to town and used it all over a few days, it would slow the network down for everyone connected to that tower/towers. Which all phone networks are susceptible to.
Just a guess, but if that is what they are doing it should be stated in their terms :/
Nothing would surprise me with Kogan, they've been slapped with a few fines from the ACCC for misleading customers.

              • +1

                @SimAus007:

                You could be right

Or… it could just be conjecture based off feels and consumer bias

                • @0jay: That is also a high possibility ;)

  • -2

    Vodafone sucks. Do not get.

    • +6

Better then telstra in my area!

      • +5

Yep same here, Telstrafail is hopeless. I don't know but it seems like it might depend on your location.

    • +2

      Depends on location really.

Works great in my area, I've been using Kogan for >3 years now.

      • +1

Not sure you need the best connection at home since home nbn.

        • +1

          Not everyone has NBN though.

        • No option for NBN where I live (unless you count Sky Muster crudola)..

          I do have Starlink though.

  • +1

Good luck finding a better deal, even paying in cash!

What about Woolworths mobile when you factor in the discount on your groceries.

    • This is basically why I won't be leaving woolies mobile until they remove that discount. I get 42gb/month on the telstra network essentially for free as we do a big shop once a month at woolies then smaller shops if need be elsewhere. Inflation hitting a lot of our "big ticket" grocery items has definitely made it easier to max out the discount, hah. I think pet food for 4 animals gets us about 50% of the way there on it's own.

    • What discount do you get?

      • +4

First you have to promise you won’t shop at Aldi. Then we’ll give you a loyalty bonus so you’ll feel slightly less ripped-off

        • I hate aldi, the quality of stuff they sell always feels lower than other supermarkets.

          • +3

@AwesomeAndrew: You'd have to specify which foods. The tempura nuggets are the same. Meat and veg is obviously the same animals and plants. They also sell a bunch of brand name stuff like Coke, TimTams, Allens lollies, etc. Their tinned peaches are actually better (sweeter and more "ripe" as-in softer, not hard, more taste, and a better colour) than ColesWorths. Plain stuff like oats, sugar, milk, milk powder, weetbix, flour, etc all the same. Frozen veg again the same plants. Canned salmon same. Tuna same. All frozen pizza from all of them is awful but Aldi's is high up on that awful scale. Ham and honey ham the same. Their chunky beef pies are quite good. Rice bran and sunflower oil, same. Eggs same. The "Country Style" bread they sell stays fresh/soft longer than the real Country Style (whatever it is). Frozen meals mostly the same.

You might be comparing brand names at ColesWorths with Aldi, when you should be comparing ColesWorths store brands with Aldi. Of course things like fish fingers, crumbed fish, breakfast cereals, chocolate, are going to be worse than brand names because so is ColesWorths store brand stuff.

      • 10%off Wollies shop, once per month

        • Thats ok a $300 shop once a month. I usually get $10 - $15 worth in flybuys bonus points. But you probably double up and get bonus points plus this.

        • +2

Not sure why you got downvoted.

It's possible to get it twice unless they've patched it. Once in app and once in store.

          • @Caped Baldy: That trick stopped working a couple of months ago for me at least.

            • +1

@cannibal: I thought it was online order first then in store?

              • @TEER3X: Ah, I wasn't aware that order was necessary.
I can't remember what order I used last time, but I'll try again this month. Thanks.

            • +1

@cannibal: Works for me still. You must do the online one first then instore

        • If coles was telstra network like Woolworths i would have moved from boost. I just dont shop at woolies much at all but i would if it was closer for a telstra plan for roughly $10 a month after discount.

  • Do you folks get the same speed on Kogan as on pure native Vodafone?
For me Voda works fantastic in my area, I'd be much interested in this one, just not sure if it'll match direct Vodafone transfer rates?

    • Nah… Vodafone is 5G

      • +4

So is Kogan now, my other half has a Kogan SIM and 5G shows up quite often now.

      • +2

I'm OK with 4G only, I live in excellend Vodafone coverage, getting consistent 200mbps+ on 4G
If I could get that on Kogan, it would be amazing.

    • No I've been on Vodafone before years ago and it wasn't this bad

I'm guessing they have their own subset of Vodafone data on super low priority

      • +1

        I'm guessing

        ummm… yeh.

  • +4

Been using Kogan for 9 months now and not very happy. It was fine when I did the 1 month or 3 month plans, but I swear after going for the 12 month plan my reception has been horrid.

Calls constantly drop, can't load web pages in so many places. Maybe its a placebo but regardless, not happy.

    • +3

That may explain some of the stark differences in opinion - some people are on 1 - 3 month and some on 12 month

      I concur 12 month was a disaster

    • +1

I used to get the random call dropping thing too, which made it a horror to use for corporate numbers which make you hold for half hour or more (cough QF), but ever since I saw they now had LTE and Wifi calling (at least since the phone icons appeared) I haven't had that issue.

      Touchwood.

  • I've been using this and down time is stable in sydney metro area.

  • +1

Not bad though I got the 500GB deal last year for $150. So far pretty good. Mobile Gaming on the train 5-20ms. Up to 2.5MB/s download. Great for videos and social media. Obviously not good for large downloads. But so far so good.

  • +1

Currently have Kogan and im getting 1 bar pretty much everywhere i go. It dies when i am on the train.

    Back to boost i go.

    • Getting 1 bar "pretty much everywhere" is pretty much BS.
No network in the world will give you pretty much 1 bar everywhere, unless you live around 20,000 feet above the towers? :)
What train line are you using your phone on and between what stations?

      • Unless you live dead middle in Sydney City, you'll be getting one bar everywhere else.

        • +2

Nope, I just travelled to Cairns and Port Douglas, I had coverage everywhere I travelled, including the historic rail line to Kuranda through the mountains, 4 mile Beach, Green Island and Fitzroy Island..
Yes, Voda has a smaller network and won't cover more remote areas with smaller populations, we all know this. It's also why they are such great value for those of us who never or rarely visit these areas.
I get better coverage in Melbourne, in my local area with Vodafone than I do with Telstra, which has a dead spot in a populated area, as mentioned, it's different for everyone as we clearly don't all live in the same place, but the majority of people do, which is where Vodafone is good at covering.

  • +2

When will those who is so narrow minded to stop blanket shame a network because some reception issues before? It's like a girl says you're not worth dating for any girl. Would you rather she says you're not suitable for me? Assume a straight guy…

    • Yeah it's all very childish. Most know what network is best for them by now, we haven't all been living under a rock FFS.

  • +1

We've tried most providers. In my home & work places, Vodafone is similar to Kogan & Lebara works the best. Telstra & Boost second, Optus & Amaysim worst.
However, Vodafone had no signals in TAS & Kangaroo island! Telstra & Optus were a life saver!
So, work out which suits you better and stay with it.

  • +2

Not the best coverage, but if you don't live isolated, I do not see bigger issues. Has been working fairly well. I paid $150 for this deal

  • +3

I paid $160 for this. Happy with it. I've retired from sim slutting.

    • +3

You'll be back. Once a sim slut always a sim slut.

      • +1

Yeah I'll probably do it on the side for my second phone, (gym phone some people call them). Hahahahaha.

        • +3

so you moved from sim slutting to phone slutting now?

          • @skinny: No I'm joking about gym phone. Apparently that is a thing though, people have a small second phone that they take with them to exercise with. I guess if I got back into running I'd probably do that too instead my big screen phone.

    • I say this once every year untill the next sucker deal. now its getting cashbacks higher then the value of the sim. Gotta profit for using my phone lol

    • +2

Basically you’re still sim slutting, but from monthly to annually, lol.

      • +1

        good point.

        • +1

All it's fine, I'm a annual SIM slut now also, welcome to the party :)

  • -1

T&C state needs to be activated by expiry of voucher…

Can anyone chime in with a voucher expiry date?

    • +2

…… I took the time to conveniently put the answer to this very question in the post description when I originally posted ….

      (Le sigh) :)

Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEST on 28/02/2023

      • -1

        Le sigh

Thanks for the neg, Daddy (y know how much I love a good neg)

Post descriptions this long only ever get a scan from me, I sometimes miss stuff, ta for fronting up to repeat it

        • +1

          not my neg mate. :)

        • You should listen to your father more often

      • On the page I have open:

". Voucher must be purchased by 11:59pm AEDT on 13/02/2023. Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEST on 31/03/2023.".

Which works out well for me:-)

  • Good deal op. I am currently using up some Belong packs but will get family to move to Kogan. Very good value for heavy users.

    • Just got of this page, checked e-mail, and there was a little note from Belong telling me the $15 plan is ending and jumping to $19 in April…

"We will no longer offer a $15 mobile plan and will move you to our $19 plan from 14 April 2023 which will take effect on your next payment date.

      What that means for you
The amount you pay each month will increase by $4 per month.

If the plan no longer suits your needs, you can cancel your service using the Belong app or change to another plan at no cost.

There will be no other changes to your plan, including international calls and text and/or data top-ups"

Two months notice isn't too bad butits not quite worth the effort to do the SIM dance now.

  • +1

Anyone had luck using this voucher for recharge of existing identical plan?

    • +1

Keen to know the same thing! Does it work for existing customers?

  • Has anyone repurchased a 12 month deal a few months before their current 12 month plan expires? Can you add the new 12 month pack and it will be additional to your remaining months?

    • +1

If it was available for exisiting customers as a recharge then it resets it.

    • Can you add the new 12 month pack and it will be additional to your remaining

      No

  • Does anyone know a plan with good data for 365 days that also includes a decent roaming pack? I like the Kogan for the data and long expiry but the roaming is 10/day. I have a planned vacation for 1 month and 10/day makes it too expensive. Any suggestions would be great.

  • If porting from Vodafone post-paid, will there be any issues?

    • If you're out of contract, only being badgered for data by the " It's a lower priority network/no it isn't" bunfight participants over ————————-> that way.
