    • Thanks, didn't come up in my search.

  • +4

Yes it's cheaper to purchase Pre-Written or Blank NFC Tags/Card and program them yourself but imo it more of a grey area for legality.

    • It ain't grey…

      • +6

        Yeah…its illegal.

I'm sure nothing will happen, but still not legal unless its backups of your own amiibos

        • What is the law that makes it illegal?

          • -1

@robeh: Nintendo has a section explaining it.
            https://www.nintendo.com.au/legal/information
Go the "FAQs" section about 3/4 down the page. Same thing for roms applies to making your own amiibos

You're basically asking "why is pirating games illegal", because its the same sentiment with the amiibos.

            • @ihuntbargains: No? The word Amiibo is not on that page and the "same thing" does not automatically apply because you imagined it so.

They may but you have not provided such information.

That page is also hilarious, I like how they always put "emulators" and "roms" together, so they can say it's "illegal", which hides the fact emulators by themselves are not illegal.

              • -2

@eagerfisherman: If you can't comprehend how the same (copyright) laws apply, then I'm not even going to bother continuing this conversation.

It is piracy, plain and simple.

                • +2

@ihuntbargains: Should be plain and simple to provide a source that explains how the copyright laws covers the cloning of NFC tags then?

Since they are exactly the same as ROMs in every conceivable way, this should be a relative breeze.

            • +2

@ihuntbargains: How can a bunch of identifying ones and zeros be a "game"?

            • +1

@ihuntbargains: Quoting Nintendo is like asking a car salesman if you need a car. Also, as eagerfisherman points out, Nintendo groups ROMs and emulators together, which are different. They also say making backups is illegal (in the US too, which in the US it isn't)

You've also said 'It is piracy, plain and simple.' Which in fact, it isn't simple. Its a complex legal grey area, especially in AU as I don't believe there is a legal precedent set, only interpretations, hence the arguments right now. We have a clause called Format Shifting, which for games its not entirely clear if this makes it okay. 2
And as eagerfisherman has pointed out again, even if there was a precedent that made creating your own backups of games and emulating them illegal, amiibo BINs would still be a grey area, as one can argue they are not software, they are just 32kb of information on a chip.

Also just on the ethical side of things. No one should feel bad for unlocking content that Nintendo has locked behind $22 plastic. In fact, if its made by EA, Blizzard, Activision, Ubisoft, no one should feel bad downloading the game at all. If they game isn't for sale anymore-its completely ethical to download a ROM. :)

              • -1

@robeh: Feel free to contact a lawyer and find out if its a grey area or not.
Also ask them if downloading the data and making your own would fall under format shifting. (Hint, it wont)

Also, format shifting is already mentioned in the link I provided.

          • +1

@robeh: There is “software” part in the Amiibo which Nintendo spent time to develop for the compatible games and consoles. Am I the only one to think it is a sort of intellectual property that is not supposed to be copied without permission or authority to do so?

            • +2

@wtfnodeal: What "software"? On the NFC tag or the NFC receiver?

The NFC tag has no "software", it is simple data payload from 1-32kb.

Can you copyright a NFC tag that is just a payload of a URL? I don't know, maybe you can? What's the difference between that and an Amiibo with a payload that says "I'm amiibo #42", where some are slightly more advanced and say "I'm amiibo #42 at level 3"?

Can you copyright that payload? I don't know, maybe you can? Maybe you can prevent the selling of that payload for commercial use, maybe it's not illegal for an individual to write an arbitrary payload to a NFC tag? Maybe it is. Maybe it's covered under some circumvention law?

The point is, the answer isn't actually that obvious.

              • @eagerfisherman: Sorry I am confused. Are you saying the extra character unlocked in a compatible game by placing the Amiibo on the Switch Joycon is not designed or developed by Nintendo? The characters like Link, Zelda, and Mario are not copyrighted? If it is only illegal for commercial use why on earth are we not allowed to download pirated movies for individual or home use?

      • +8

When it comes to Nintendo, I'll allow it.
Yes, I'm the authority on these issues

        • I thought my uncle that worked at Nintendo was the authority on these things.

After all, how would we have learned you can go into Peach's castle in Mario Kart 64?

          • +1

@Jonzay: We work together, he's a top bloke

    • +1

And I dare say the majority of people buying these aren't buying them for the NFC functionality.

  • There's 26 FYI.

    • +3

      $570 well spent.

  • +6

Problem with Amazon might be squished boxes as their packing is hit and miss

    • +2

I had already pre-ordered a load at EB Games and was initially regretting that now I could have pre-ordered from Amazon but your comment is a valid one. The last Amiibos I ordered from Amazon were the Metroid Dread ones and the packaging of that was very much bent and creased so if you are thinking of keeping these mint in their packaging I agree, think twice if going with Amazon.

      • EB games are pretty good with handling even for their delivery, comes in a cool box like a cardboard treasure chest.

Only Nintendo beats it with their Nintendo box and very generous use of bubble wrap. Got my metroid dread amiibo in perfect condition from them

      • Catch was just as awful with my Metroid Dread delivery, looked like someone dropkicked it over my fence a few times

    • 100% this - i don't understand how most ecom retailers can't ship these without them getting crushed in post.

Amazon seems to have a 50/50 success rate for me and they may not have stock to replace it. I tried Kogan once… and they shipped it in a plastic bag w/ no protection and it arrived as flat as a pancake. THEN, Kogan tried FOUR MORE TIMES with a promise to ship in a box and each time it arrived in a plastic bag - destroyed. Eventually they gave up trying but honestly after the second time it was just good entertainment during covid times.

If you're in it for the collecting, I reckon eliminating shipping risks is a good call.

    • I don't mind, I unbox them all right away anyway

      • Not if there is something pierces through everything and breaks the Amiibo statue into halves. My blu ray disc came from Amazon had the padded envelope pierced through all the way to the disc cover to the disc itself as if the delivery dude used it for targeting practises. Same as the Xbox One bought from Amazon both shipper and console boxes were penetrated by some kind of sharp objects all the way to the Xbox console itself.

    • Yeah, but their returns is flawless. Hogwarts came shattered lol, there's a huge footprint on the envelope. Amazon sent a new one the next day and all I have to do is send the crushed one back in a month. Too easy.

  • +9

They’ll send them out in an oversized box 3x the size without any padding and you will enjoy it.

    • Padding is a piece of brown paper on the bottom of the box or on top depends on who delivers it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Do these appreciate in value like Lego considering they are keeping reprint these?

    • +5

I wouldn't recommend these as an investment.

Collect them because you want to have them, enjoy them and maybe, dare I say it, take them out of their packaging and actually use them! (I'm still on the fence about this last part having pre-ordered a lot of these from this batch as to whether to display them boxed or opened but I guess I have a few months to ponder this until they arrive….)

      • +1

I order the NFC stickers and use them instead of opening some of my favourite amiibos.

Not planning to sell them but helps me procrastinate on the decision. The box art looks pretty cool and I find it hard to open it and destroy the box art

    • Have a look at the Celica models. If I'd known, I would've bought more than just 1. Its also my fav game.

      • I thought Corrin was more sought-after?

    • I guess that's a 'yes', with a truckload of salt.
      Oops.

  • Keen to get a couple but no idea which ones to get!!!

    • Loftwing is a game changer, fast travel should have been standard for Skyward Sword but classic hidden behind a plastic paywall was always expected.
Wolf Link is my other favourite one, cool feature that it upgraded in Twilight Princess and then applied in BOTW

      • What did wolf link do?

        • It's a wolf pet that runs around and helps in combat in BOTW. It gets more hearts by completing stuff in Twilight Princess

      • +2

Wow needing an amiibo for convenient fast travel is a scam for sure

  • +2

Will not trust Amazon for amiibo preorders. I am still waiting for my fire emblem amiibo that was slated for Jan 20 delivery.
I have to chase them up every week and all they say it is currently out of stock so it will be shipped when they get stock. To me it is just a load of bull as it was released on Jan 20 and it has already sold out from all Aussie retailers. Amazon tends to accept preorders more than they can fulfil.

  • +2

Bought all the LoZ ones. Now I have until just before release date to decide if I want to keep them all (will probably do though). :D

  • What is so special about Young Link?

    • Do you mean the different price? Probably just missed out on $21.95. Same with Mipha, I got one for $21.95 but right after that price went up for the remaining stocks.

      • Got the Young Link for the current price as well, so I missed out on that too. Lol

  • +3

    Upvoted for the great formatting!

  • Do any of these give you special items in the game/s?

    • most of them do better to google and see which items you want horse/weapons/pet etc.

  • -7

Wow how to ruin a collectors market in 1

    • +12

      Ruin scalpers, helps collectors.

    • +8

Good. People should be able to purchase without scalpers. Nintendo should make the money. Not (profanity) on ebay.

    • most of these were $4 at target for like 6months in 2020 and $6-8 at Kmart for 3-4months.
literally had a huge chance to buy these cheap back then.

      • Yeah but that was during the lockdowns. Times were good then. How much has inflation affected prices ever since lockdown ended. Traffic and public transport is also back to the pre covid nightmare.

  • Thanks OP. Bought a couple of BOTW and Link BOTW2.

    Hope they pack them properly!
Will accept lightly crumpled. Will not if severe.

  • +2

Thanks OP. Pre-ordered the Zelda Loftwing amiibo. It will be perfect for my next playthrough of Skyward Sword. I go through it every couple of years. Its one of my favourites. Sword gameplay is a lot of fun. Plus great music and characters too.

  • +1

Do people open these for display and use or keep sealed? Some of the figures do look cool

    • Both, I have a lot of these in box in storage and some I opened coz I wanted to use them for botw also, the ones I opened I just bought another sealed coz lol.

Keep in mind these are NOT collectors items, they mass produced these so much.

But they are cool, so you do you fam.

      • -2

They were increasing solidly in value before this reprint :(

    • I have all mine out of the box and lined up on 3 sets of bookshelves in front of all my games. Feels like a shrine to all the games and properties that I love.

I get keeping them sealed for their value to increase but I don't have the space and money for that, and there's always a chance of a re-release like the Zelda ones making your collection worth less.

  • the price is a little bit prohibitive not going to lie, BECAUSE I WANT ALL OF THEM X2

    • These are the best thing Nintendo ever created.

  • The Link's Awakening figure is $96.54 from a third party seller, with no option for Amazon AU.

    • Looks like gone at Amazon too.

  • -2

Its free to download the .nfc file and use your phone to tap onto your switch

  • Damn, no Fire Emblem :(

    • That was last month but amazon just got some stock for some of them today Ike,chrom,Marth,Roy,corrin, lucina.

  • Doesn't EB games have bins full of these going for a buck each? Or are they skylanders only?

Also if you get say, a Link amibo, does that only work on one game or can it unlock Link in every game he might appear?

    • It usually skylanders figures that are in those bins

    • +1

Each figure may work with multiple games. What it unlocks on each game depends on the figure and the game.
      See here for an example.

  • How does the Kirby meta Knight work, and for which game? I googled the Kirby: Planet Robobot and it looks like it's a 2016 game for 3ds, not even for switch?

    • List of games that the Meta Knight works with

    • They're being re-released to coincide with the upcoming Kirby's Return to Dreamland: Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch, which use the Kirby amiibo for various things I'm sure.

  • Thanks, ordered the botw2 Link. Looks the best.

The rider Link and Mipha were the other two I was contemplating but on a closer look they are of poor quality. Rider doesn't even have a face lol. NFC tags will do it I need those two.

    New link is nice though.
