Expensive for no ssd and no OS.

    • +1

      has OS, just no SSD

      • +6

I don't think people realise the OS key is in the BIOS

        • +2

A good point for the seller to advantageously advertise

They even mentioned it in a previous model post

          A stark omission unless different

SSD screws will be supplied if you buy no SSD variant. Windows keys are embedded in bios, will activate easily.

The cheapest reputable NVMe SSD 256GB I can find is $28, so you might as well get the 256GB SSD option for $235.

      • thin some people complained last time as to how much life SSD had left …..this removes the question…. buy a new SSD, got a 512 NVME from scorptec on weekend for $38.

        • +1

I believe that was some other vendor. Our SSD are tested and we don't sell anything that has below par health. SSD life is covered in our warranty as well

  • Does the 16gb config come as 2 x 8gb or 1 x 16gb modules?

    • Depends on what fulfilment has available at the time of processing

  • is the CPU soldered or socketed?

    • +1

      Socketed.

      • +1

Socketed, it can be upgraded to i5-9600T, i7-9700T

  • what is the difference between ProDesk and EliteDesk (G5 mini in both cases)?

    • -4

Elitedesk is better, it's aimed at corporates

      • -2

That is the type of answer that I get from clueless Harvey-Norman sales people, I was hoping for a better (read more precise, technical) answer

        • +1

          Elitedesk has USB-C, prodesk doesn't

          • @Homr: That's much better, thanks

            • -1

@dr: Can you please remove the downvote?

              • @Homr: seems ozbargain does not allow me to, nevertheless I gave you upvote for USB-C reply.

        • -4

It's actually a good answer, even if it's not specific - the Elitedesk range is generally as good, or better, in every way.
Which one has better build quality? Elitedesk.
Which one has better warranty? Elitedesk.
Which one has, I don't know, faster storage? Elitedesk.
On any given measure, in general, Elitedesk will be better.

If you want specific - precise, technical - answers, you should ask specific questions. Insinuating someone is 'clueless' because their valid and informed response is somehow not good enough for you, that's just bad manners.

@jcon: Did you really feel the strong urge to post this reply? Do you feel better about yourself?

You are trying to turn my reply into a personal attack which it was not. I did not call him clueless, I compared usability of the original answer to the answer of clueles HN sales people. Are you working for HN by any chance? :-)

My question was directed at the seller, who I hoped having dealt with these machines on daily basis will be able to give me straight technical answer with minimal effort and spare me from Googling and reading through HP sales and marketing spiel. Somebody on reddit answered the same question as ""Elite" targets businesses with deep pockets where "sense" isn't a strong suit. "So, do you want to buy from our 'Elite' line or 'Pro' line?" Customer:"Well, we consider ourselves to be the best in the business, so obviously we want to go with the 'Elite' line.""

And no not even your answer 'cause-tis-better is not good enough answer to question what are the differences - if the question was which one is better then it maybe acceptable. Question was very precise what are the differences - read it, understand it and if you know then please answer it, otherwise…

    • EliteDesk has vpro management too from memory (advantageous for enterprise, not needed for home)

      • I thought that vPro is the feature of the CPU, no?

        • +2

It's more than just vPro supported CPU, it also need other vPro support componets, e.g. Q370 chipset, i219-LM NIC and vPro supported WiFi card.

  • How noisy are these? I'm after something silent.

    • G4 model is silent

    • Silent

  • Yikes that prty nice and must just be out of vendor warranty.

  • How would this go as a Plex server?

    • +1

How many users are you going to support? And are you want to use hardware transcoding?

I have NUC gen 7 (i5-7260U) and use it as Plex media servers with 5 users. I use hardware transcoding and can have 4K transcoding without issue. You are not going to have issue with this machine. Also use directplay as possible.

    • +1

I’m buying it for that reason. I’ve heard that the 8th gen Intel processors with Quick Sync are very efficient and powerful when it comes to transcoding video. The benefit to the 8th gen and newer is that they support many more codecs.

The only thing to know is that to take advantage of this you need to enable hardware acceleration on Plex and this requires an active Plex Pass subscription.

  • does anyone have any experience buying from this company that they would be happy to share?

    • I got the 7020 sff from them a few months ago, it needed a dust but works great

I received the 8100 version of this today, totally dust free w 1 stick of 8gb ram

    • You'd have to remove the Wi-Fi card or SSD to install this, correct?

      • Correct, i would remove the wifi

  • I ordered the 8GB/256GB version and came with 2x4GB RAM installed. WIFI is very good, despite being 802.11AC. I installed Windows 10. BIOS update available on HP website and do download the Intel driver update tool, it updates WIFI, Bluetooth and Graphics to the latest drivers. Cinebench single core test a bit low, but doesn't match the snappiness and responsiveness I'm seeing…

  • I ordered with 8GB but without a HDD as had spare new HDD but cannot install Win10 or Win11 as it fails to find media drivers for unknown hardware during the install process. Have updated the BIOS and confirmed all hardware is being detected correctly. Have tried the various tips and tricks suggested as a work around but nothing has worked so far. Win10 & Win11 USB builds work fine on other hardware but recreated them just to be sure and still no good. Anyone else had any luck installing a clean windows install.
