When will we start to see the big drops in the s23 ultra? My local good guys and officeworks told me there was not a lot of interest.

      Next time this year

Marty, we have to go back, back to the future.

        • +1

We are already in the future

    • I just bought an S20 Ultra 5G in great condition for $350, so I'd say sometime in 2026

      • What store sells it that cheap? Starts at $450 for the 5G model on Phonebot site.

        • I got lucky on eBay I guess.

    • -5

they're selling the same phone twice!! (I know about the battery and camera improvements)

If this article is anything to go by it should do better than the S22 at least.

  • +1

    Got excited for a minute.

    • +14

Yes well I am sure Samsung have a stack of unsold s22 lines to move. The thing is phone technology is really reaching a plateau now. The only real thing that Samsung can do is to tweak the camera and the processor. I usually upgrade my iPhone and Samsung flagship yearly but can’t see the benefit of spending the extra for new models of either phones. Even when the iPhone 14 pro max came out last year, the Apple Store in the city did not have any big queues. Gone are the days of massive demand.

      • -3

well, they could stop with forcing the Exynos on outside Korea/US markets
        but yeah, nothing is new.

        • +6

it's no longer Exynos on s23

          • -2

@LimeAlz: oh that's good to hear.

And hope they fixed the eSIM problem, of being asleep half the time and not taking calls/sms
tho if they could they would fix in older ones too

          • +2

@LimeAlz: S22 also Snapdragon in Australia

      • +1

I agree, my s21 ultra still runs and performes like new. No need for a new phone for at least another year.

      Pixel's are where it's at these days…

Pixel 6 showed potential but had too many bugs

Pixel 7 is what the pixel 6 should have been, a really solid device.

Pixel 8 will be a nice efficiency upgrade for the SOC and a new camera.

All for under $900 on release day (with discounts)

      • +12

Not really. Recent pixel lineup is plauged with problems.

        • Only issue with the pixel 7 is the optical fingerprint sensor not working too great outdoors.

It is a bummer they didn't upgrade it to ultrasonic, they really should have with the feedback they received from the 6.

          Other than that, great phones.

          • +3

@Binchicken22: there are reports are camera lens shattering

            • -2

@LimeAlz: I've seen that for so many different models over the years… Yet to actually experience it.

Certainly not a reason to not buy a phone though because a few randoms on the internet "total never dropped their phones" and the glass just smashed.

              E.g
              https://www.sammobile.com/news/galaxy-s20-ultra-design-flaw-…

              • +3

@Binchicken22: Should have known not to suggest anything but a Samsung in a Samsung post 😅

I'm not "anti Samsung" by any means, my main reason for changing to pixel is because Samsung refuse to release a "standard" sized phone with all the bells and whistles, you have to buy the medium sized tablet in the "ultra" to get the top end screen/camera/specs.

Read the room samsung, apple has been releasing a standard sized pro for years and it's doing very well, selling more than the larger sized one from what I've seen in the wild.

              • -2

                @Binchicken22:

Certainly not a reason to not buy a phone though because a few randoms on the internet "total never dropped their phones" and the glass just smashed.

You're being negged because this is simply not true.

The glass in front of the camera lens is shattering. It would be impossible for people to drop their phone and only have the glass in front of the camera lens shatter but not the screen or other parts of the phone being damaged.

Next time, please research the issue before spreading misinformation or making assumptions.

                • @brotherfranciz: So it is also misinformation when someone posts that the pixel 7 is "plagued with issues" (most upvoted comment in this thread) but the only example someone has posted is a niche case of people finding their camera glass smashing?

Also here is an article based on the iPhone 14 to discredit your claim of it being "impossible" for only the camera lens to crack from a drop, maybe do some research before spreading misinformation.

Return my S22 after a week.
Battery life was significantly worse than my 2 YO phone. Gets <4 hr SOT.
Literally can see the battery percentage drop IRL as I watch youtube.
    My speculation for poor SOT
    -Reduced mAh compared to S21.
-Flagship snapdragon made by Samsung <-fancy this being a disadvantage.
-Overheating - phone get warm from general use, heats up very quick when taking videos.
Hacks I used to prolong battery life (~1 hour extra SOT)
Dark mode, remove bloatware, disable background app aggressively, battery saver mode (phone becomes laggy).
I even got Samsung rep to remotely diagnose my phone to observe battery discharge rate. The Samsung rep recommended a swap/refund.
It was ridiculous for an average user to adjust settings/usage patterns for the phone to last a whole day.
To conclude, I started to develop a phobia of running of battery on a flagship range phone, so I returned it.

Now Happier on a S20FE, no Perceivable difference, MUCH better battery. Not looking to upgrade until interest rate rise halt?

    • +16

A whole lotta effort there….. My S22 Ultra was perfect, a fantastic phone.

    • Thanks for sharing. Did hear similar rumblings about bad battery life in comparison to other galaxy devices.

    • +6

Using my S22 Ultra for 1 year …. no issues with battery what so ever. Rarely heats.

      • Battery seems to lesser of issue on the Ultra model. My experience is with the standard model.

    • +1

Totally agree. I got only 2 hrs SOT from my S22 yesterday before it died. My S20 FE 5G had excellent battery life and I'm changing to an S23+ which brings back TSMC production of the CPU.

    • +1

Had the same experience, it got to a point where I was constantly worried about my battery use on my base S22. It was 100% worth it to trade for a S23 Ultra at JB, ended up being $787 out of pocket after a negotiating + gift cards. Now, my battery is the last thing I worry about, and can usually go up to two days hassle-free at 120Hz 1440P. Worth it.

    • Surprising, I had a S10e and upgraded to a s22 and the battery is obviously much better, and I certainly get far more than 2 hrs SOT… depends what you're doing or course, playing games or multitasking will probably do it but I watch YouTube and scroll for a few hours during and around my workday and always have some battery left by end of day.

    • +1

One thing that bugs me about my S22 is the vibration is so weak. Missed many calls because of this.

    • I have S21 and the bigger issue for me is the battery drain with the screen off. Anyone got any tips on how to reduce this? Which background apps do I need to disable?

  • +6

I really hope new players come into the smartphone world. Samsung is not doing well enough

    • +1

I have Samsung phones, watches, tablets. I'm beginning to hate all of them. Samsung customer is RUBBISH. They've destroyed my brand loyalty. Impossible to get a timely resolution, every promise made (to get back to me) broken, every escalation request ignored, departments don't speak to each other and the only department who actually calls back - delivery and returns - doesn't know the status so they call me to check whether I'm returning a device or not.

Galaxy Watch5 LTE is currently lasting 8 hrs untethered. Applied a ton of tweaks. Dead as a doornail by 4pm

      • +2

My samsung galaxy watch pro 5 lte lasts 2 days without charging.

        • Is that untethered so LTE always on?
I have the 40mm independent from a phone, connected to LTE, BT off, WiFi off, NFC off, AOD off, Wake on Wrist Off, Touch to Wake On, Hey Google Off, Heart rate every 10mins, GPS On, Location On.

          • +1

@OrderedChaos: Yes untethered and LTE always on.

            • @dlakers3peat: Thanks for that. The Pro battery is almost exactly 2x larger than the 40mm. So the 40mm should last a full day not bloody 8hrs. Gonna have to take it back.

      • +3

Have to agree with you about Customer Service, although it seems to be their call centres to blame.

A friend of mine has has nothing but over and above positive experiences with them: he's had phones upgraded for free, has been given free AKG headphones to apologise for issues, and under 2 week turn arounds on most of his complaints.

Wheras I got stuck in a time warp for 4 months over BT issues woth my buds live and my claim was rejected twice. They're still buggy.

I think it might be better to travel to or call your nearest Samsung store.

        • Thanks for the feedback. Will go into the store. Haven't had good experience at the Samsung pod at Doncaster (Vic). Explained. They promised to get the district manager to call. Nothing happened. Might go to Chadstone this weekend. They have an actual store.

    • +6

I wish Sony phones were available in Aus again. Expandable storage and headphone jack.

or LG. My V50 has a 3.5mm jack and a second screen case. Got it for a bit under $600 after it was 1 year old. Sadly LG mobile left our market.

Sony I found ran hot, had three different Z phones.

  • +1

I have a realme 7 pro with a 65W charger…. Not sure I can handle these slow charge times again. I am used to seeing my phone on 2% have a quick shower and it's back to 70%

  • +6

this is not good. i got a s23 ultra 512gb for 1500… you might as well pay a bit more for newest lol

    • Exactly

    • +1

How did you get it for $1500, can you please share :)

    • +2

The question ultimately is whether paying an extra 33% premium is getting you 33% extra features.

I'm going to say no. They're basically the same phone with minor improvements, so not worth it IMO. A better camera, slightly faster speeds and maybe slightly better battery life. The first two are pretty useless/not going to be noticeable for most people, and the extra battery life is pretty negligible/potentially irrelevant for most people as well.

I'd probably argue you could go further and get an s21 Ultra for cheaper and still have pretty much the exact same phone as the s23 Ultra. They really haven't changed much at all, so price/performance is pretty skewed against buying the s23 unless you just have too much money and don't care.

      • +3

Its CPU efficiency is much improved since production switched from Samsung back to TSMC for this year's models. Also storage speeds have doubled moving from UFS 3.1 to UFS 4.0 this year.

          • +2

@shxhshzhz: The battery life and thermal throttling improvements will be very noticeable

        • +3

Congrats, so something now loads in 0.8 seconds instead of 0.85. And it runs at 50 degrees instead of 53.

That is honestly the sort of improvement you'd see, which is to say - you'd hardly notice it at all.

Maybe if you're running the most intense games or video editing software around, but why the hell would you use a phone for that?

          • +1

@DingoBilly: No. It will last a long day and be able to reverse wireless charge other people's dead phones, instead of being dead by mid-afternoon. I don't think you realise that Samsung produced Qualcomm's flagship processors in 2021 and 2022, which severely impacted battery life.
            https://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3

          • +1

@DingoBilly: my S22+ gets 4hrs screen on time with 4G, no gaming and just general social media usage with YouTube. it's not great at all so the upgrade to the S23 would be noticeable

        • S23 vanilla 128gb* cries in ufs 3.1

At least the S23+ starts from 256gb storage with just 8gb ram. Also no ufs3.1 all plus models get ufs 4.0

          What’s the difference between ufs3.1 & ufs 4.0?

Any significant meaning in real life usage?

  • +3

    How's this a bargain?

Old Tech for new Tech prices

  • HOLD!

  • Really hope there's deals on the S22+ at some point, considering how bad the battery on the S22 is…

  • +2

Is this a deal ? It was pretty much this price with Trade in deal shortly after it came out!

  • Hello - can I purchase even without the .edu email?

    • You need .edu email to access Samsung Education Store. JB at times price match education store, depending on the store and the staff member and their mood…

      • Thank you for the quick response, appreciate it. Will check with JB.

  • -1

Good on ya Sammy! Doing sumthin' back (as always) to the communities for their support. Can't say much for other companies though. Here's looking at you Apple. lol

    • +3

Why are we praising Sammy here. This was $1249 march of last year. It's barely gone down despite a new model coming out.

If anything, screw them for inflated rrp with 3 different "deals" happening to deceive customers that they're getting a bargain.

      • Sammy is what's keeping the mobile phones alive in this day and age. Whether people would like admit and more than likely not, Sammy is the mover and shaker in this very saturated industry. Kudos to them for making people still somewhat interested in this field. Apple had their day in the sun. Time to pass on the torch. No point in hangin' on past glories and just concentrate on takin' on the the likes of Netflix and such nonsense.

I still remember that broken promise Apple has given to Apple Corp. lol

  • +1

People complaining about the price… Have you ever taken a glance at any iPhone RRP? Those pretty much never get discounted when this new either.

  • Just checked my EPP store and the prices are the same

  • +1

Annoying how theres never any S22+ must of been the popular one

  • While it's good discount, I paid $200 more for an s23 with 2 years of Samsung care 2 days ago.

I don't care about the newer model, but apparently the s23 doesn't have the battery life issues of the s22. And the Samsung care+ means I can pay $150 in 23 months and get a physically new phone which should mean I can get 4 years out of the phone instead of the usual 2 before the battery becomes a problem.

    • Which S23 did you get? The best I can do on the S23 256gb is a few bucks over $1000.

    • How did you get such a good pricing? Would you share with us ?

      • I bought one aswell a few days ago.

Epp store had $200 trade in bonus and $250 accessory credit. 256gb S23 ultra was 1599 or so. Used the credit for a watch and sold it to a friend. Only paid $1150 in the end, maybe $1200 if asurion charges admin fee for not sending phone back

      • Samsung education store pre-order sale. $1160 for 256gb.
        $100 trade in bonus.
        Half price Samsung care+
BONUSCARE code took the other 50% off.
$300 trade in value for my s21.

$760 total but that also includes the trade in on my s21.

The $100 trade in bonus sale appears to be gone, but the others are still active but the trade in bonus sales come every month.

    • You shouldn't need to change after 2 years with these new Qualcomm CPUs, I'm pretty confident about it.

      • Had my s21 ultra for nearly 2 years and it's still snappy fast, even with the memory sitting at 450gb full of junk apps and media.

Even with exynos it's safe to say that CPU's on this thing is way overkill for mobile use already. Now if only the build quality of the phones would last more than 3 years. My s21 ultra doesn't fast charge anymore and needs the usb port changed.

        • I'm more referring to the efficiency of the CPU which makes all the difference to a phone's usability when the battery has degraded. Ultras are a different story because of the much larger battery.

The 8Gen2 in the S23s has created a 4-year generational leap within the space of a year over the 8Gen1. This is almost purely because Samsung (poorly) produced the flagship Snapdragon chips in 2021 and 2022.

      • I really hope your right.

It's 3 pm, 3 hours screen on time and my s21 is at 28%. If it get to 15% it will die within 30 minutes of no activity.

My S10E did the same thing at 18 months.

        • +1

Yeah the S10e was a bit of a dud, the S21 to a lesser extent. Both models had Samsung-designed Exynos chips which were used in their Australian flagships until 2021. But unfortunately, last year's switch to Snapdragon for our market didn't bring noticeable efficiency gains because Samsung produced them for Qualcomm until this year. Qualcomm switched production back to TSMC who have a track record of making efficient chips (eg. 2020's Snapdragon 865 in the S20 FE 5G, this year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the S23). That's why the S23 is a different animal.

      • +1

Tbh I felt I needed to changed after 1 year (But with the exy chip in S21U). Went to Apple instead but on the outside looking in again as I'm disappointed with the restricted nature of ios

The chipset was so terrible it was a marginal upgrade over my S9, it still got very hot very quick playing games and throttled like a bitch and still needed some extra juice if I were to play some games over my lunch break and be out that night. Whereas I can abuse the iPhone all day and not care, it will last almost 2 days without gaming.

So hopefully it's as good as the reviews say and I'll nab a 23 when there is a halfway decent standalone deal

        • +1

Similar experience here but after trying out an iPad recently I wouldn't even consider an iPhone (but I do love MacBooks). Check this review of the SOC out, it validates everything that's been said about the 8 Gen 2
          https://youtu.be/c1j5p4iNvRM

Btw there was a great pre-order deal at Harvey Norman involving signing up to an Optus plan, cancelling and paying $828 in termination fees. The upfront prices were $0 S23 256, $299 S23+ 512 and $599 S23U 512.

          • +1

@Techie4066: That was a great deal, if you cancel straight away it only costs $796 in termination fees (don't ask how Optus calculates that) plus pro-rata each day until you cancel.
I cancelled after 3 or 4 days and therefore only needed to pay $802 in termination fees for the S23 Ultra 512gb on top of the initial $599 to Harvey Norman.
The S23 256gb on its own was only $796 if you terminate straight away which I believe is an excellent deal.

  • +4

Just logged onto Gov store and prices are the same.
S23 (128GB) on there for $1,079. Trying to decide between that or S22 for $746

    • +9

Battery life is poor on S22. You will regret after purchase. Better spend extra few bucks on S23

      • +1

Thanks for the insight. So far 3 comments with complaints about battery life.

        • +2

          Make that 4

        • +3

I agree that it's not great, especially when new but it does seem ti improve a bit after learning your habits. I also think it has a lot to do with managing expectations - it's a small phone with a powerful SoC that isn't the most efficient. It gets me through the day in normal circumstances, and that's all I would expect it to do.

          • +1

@chrisandrew: It's been great for me day to day. I have a 256gb s22 and have no issue with battery running out during or after a day. It's not amazing but it's not bad IMO

  • Hi folks, how do I access EDU store or GOV store ? Any advice please?
