I hated people calling me using a Betamax line. I'll say "Hello?!" and 3 seconds later you hear the response…

  • why they used this spectacular sony's 'betamax' failure ?

  • These never work and are highly unreliable

  • Hey,

I signed up with these guys in Panama (the VoipCheap incarnation) and used their services in about 10 countries. They were really useful for reporting my lost mobile phone, reporting the fraud on my Visa Card, for forward booking my accomodation in the next town across south america when I was doing my internet, for getting my online banking working when it failed, for calling friends/family for xmas/bdays etc and for organising my payment for my last contract before travelling.

    The drawbacks:
1/ Calls to mobile [one digital to another digital voice system can mismatch]
2/ Calls to other Voip [see 1 - but that happens when you call engin from someone elses voip service]
3/ Credit expiry - the free calls are usually for 90 days from the last top up
4/ Rejigging the free destinations - what is free to call today is often not free to call next week [this is part of there marketing along with point 3]

After all these drawbacks I have to say I was very happy with the service - it workd -I very rarely had the delay/chop problem [I would just call again] and i could contact people from very hard to call from places.

For all the calls above I spent 10 pounds ($25) over 6 months - cheaper than here!

  • the problem is that its not really free as they claim..

  • but isn't it free calls in Australia

  • I don't understand, how is it not free unless it's over the 300 minute limit per week? Has anyone tried this? Is the quality as bad as how Scotty described? I would assume it rely's on your bandwidth, so it should be okay if you're on broadband.

    • From their page here: http://www.internetcalls.com/en/free.html

Buying credit entitles you to 120 Freedays (unless stated otherwise). This means you can call all countries marked as "Free" in our rates list for a period of 120 days at no costs. When the 120 days are over, the normal rate will be charged for these destinations. You can get more Freedays by topping up your account with credit.

Max 300 minutes per week of free calls, measured over the last 7 days and per unique IP address.

Basically you can only make free calls if you have some credit in your account first. Actually it does give you very limited of "free calls" as trial users (those without credit in their account). I think it's 1 minute or something like that, and they'll cut off your call. I've written a review on VoIP Stunt a few years ago (another Betamax company), and I think a lot of info still applies:

      http://blog.ozbargain.com.au/2006/free-landlinemobile-calls-…

As of delay — it's not just about having broadband, but also the latency introduced when you connect to their servers, which are overseas. Some people found the latency acceptable for free calls. I usually get very annoyed and give up…

  • I used VoipBuster for a period of time, and found the call quality quite ordinary - this was both with the software and when I had a hardware VoIP solution. Additionally, I think the list of countries where you can make free calls changes from time to time, so in a few months, it may not be free for Australian calls.

Having said that, I have a friend who used VoipBuster and found the call quality perfectly fine. I guess your mileage may vary.

  • Actually, I was using VoIP Stunt (Betamax company, like Scotty said) few years back when PennyTel weren't around. I can vouch for the claim that their call quality is quite bad. If you're after "free calls" (not really free as you need to top up from time to time to get free days), then maybe you wouldn't mind the significant lag. But for most people, I think this would be frustrating.

This can also work out to be more expensive than Australian VoIP providers. Let's compare this with with say, PennyTel. IIRC, each top up from Betamax company costs 10 pounds minimum. With the exchange rate at the moment, this works out to be AUD $23 for 120 days of free calls. So each month, you're technically paying AUD $5.75 for subscription. PennyTel on the other hand charges AUD $5/month.

Then you have the maximum of 300 minutes a week (1200 mins a month). Let's make a reasonable assumption that each call lasts for 30 minutes. So that equates to 40 free calls a month. PennyTel on the other hand, offers 80 free calls to more destinations in their $0.08 list. Not to mention that once you go over your 'quota', the call rates for internetcalls.com are more expensive than PennyTel's.

And don't forget, with PennyTel, you also get a free DID, better voice quality, lower sms rates, and overall more flexible (i.e. callback feature, ANI callback, etc). Of course if you're making many short 1-2 minute calls, then this could work out a better deal for you.

    • nice analysis Pauly

    • Yup. Top rated analysis. Thanks!

  • it is free, you must use your land line number in australia and you can call anyone in australia landline, e.g
    sydney call to queensland

and when you entered your landline number, and enter your dialer Landline number you will receive a call from your landline and then you pickup your landline phone and your call should be connected soon, it is very clear by the way, try it

i tried and it works just fine
