Ah. Takes me back to the glory days of Woodworm brollies. The quickest way to spot other OzB'ers out in the wild on a rainy day ā˜”

    • +16

Still have mine from 2014. Had a good laugh with another Ozbargainer who asked asked if I got the umbrella from a Ozbargain deal as I was walking.

      • +23

Did you check him for eneloops to make sure he was legit?

        • +2

And the kfc app along with the hungry jacks vouchers.

          And the sofirn flashlight.

          • @xoom: Don't forget the 7-Eleven chopper!

            • +4

@Chandler: If they dont have any xiaomi product from powerbanks to vacuum. They will be ex communicado.

    • I Still have one umbrella that survived.

      • +1

Mine still going great. A backup to my small foldable.

        Also got the verpeak umbrella.

      • Me too! But it's the Collingwood one…

    • +2

I still have two woodworms. Still going strong!

    • +3

The mystery is what happened to them? the Woodworms were the best.

    • I still have mine. I rem i got mine for $15 for 3 umbrellas

    • Mine's still going, just need to realign the spokes and again tho :D

    • +1

The last one of mine broke earlier this year. Sad to lose my OzBargainer badge.

  • How is the quality for windy winter season ?

    • +1

They won't break like cheap umbrellas do. Note that when the wind gets under or behind it, you will have to hold on tight. Larger umbrella = more surface area = more lift. I've not taken it out in 50 km/h winds though. Even with a good umbrella, you have to worry about all sorts of debris coming at you. No thanks.

      • Thanks

      • +1

That's where the vented ones have an advantage - they can let some wind through.

  • +1

I've had one for about 3 years now. They are great. Only issue was the plastic part on top of the button (for auto open) popped off once, but was simple to put back. These are big, sturdy umbrellas, and that's a good thing. No need to forgo your daily walk because it's raining outside with this umbrella.

    • +7

I am quite annoyed that Aldi and other manufacturers have discriminated against me. I have been looking for years for a smaller version of this umbrella because i only need it for mini-golf.

  • +7

These will also fit in a Yaris.

    • +4

Surprised you didn't ask what the normal price is.

      • +2

To be fair to jv, he is one of those guys championing the true intent of this site, BARGAIN.

Deals of late have been very much focused on 'Back in stock RRP'. exhibit A- ps5.

        • Yeah because I've never negged a crappy rep post haha.

        • To be fair to jv, he is one of those guys championing the true intent of this site, BARGAIN.

          hear, hear

    • Yaris? Thought you driving one of them electrics?

    • +1

Do the rear seats need to be folded?

    • Funny thing my woodworm umbrella stayed in written off Yaris after an accident. I was so disappointed to lose it.

  • +2

Vented or non vented?.. i mean which is better

    • +2

      Yes

    • I've had vented umbrellas before and they're fantastic on windy days - they let the wind through the top and won't invert.

  • What is the diameter of this umbrella. Have wanted a large umbrella for a long time.

    • diameter folded? or unfolded?

      • Most definitely folded. I assume it folds in a similar fashion to the Webb Space telescope. sigh facepalm :p

  • +25

I tried these once. Was very hard to hit the ball with. Iā€™d recommend using a club instead.

  • +1

I hate golf umbrellas, they gave me a hole in one of my pants

      • +1

Golf and pocket pool aren't the same games

      • Focus on the hole in one reference

      • +2

        How?

That sound you heard was a joke going over your head…

        • "And now to delete my message so no one will ever know about it"

    • -1

Was it a hole in one or a par?

  • +1

I like a bargain. But my problems with golf umbrellas are that whenever it is actually raining enough to want one it is also windy enough to make using one impossible. That and twats walking through the CBD with them at eye height.

    • +2

The vented ones are the one you want in windy days.

I do agree about the eye level thing. Its annoying.

      • So vented ones are better for windy days, but is there a downside to vented?
        Less durable, perhaps?

        • The water gets in the vents.

          • @xoom: haha, well that's quite a downside for an umbrella, I guess!

            • @sam buster: Not a lot. Just a bit and it trickles down the stem/handle.

    • That and twats walking through the CBD with them at eye height.

Worse is the next level twats who walk with their umbrellas at eye height underneath verandahs and balconies. You've got the umbrella, get out into the rain you numpty!

  • +1

Bought 1 and be aware the handle is easily to come off.

    • come off as in broken ?

      • +1

Yes, but you could glue it up .

  • +6

Apparently there's this stupid social rule that men can't use umbrellas to keep the sun off them when walking in horrendous heat, only women are allowed to, but that didn't stop me.

This is a double layer umbrella so stops the actual sun/UV getting onto but I think the extra layer helps reduce infra red energy heating you up too.

    • +1

only women are allowed to, but that didn't stop me.

      bobvegas -> boobvegas?

      • It sure seems that way. It's just me and the girls out there walking to the bus with an umbrella in the hot sun.
My Aldi umbrella did fail, one of the connectors between the metal rods broke. was able to fix that but then another of the support wires broke, and cut straight through the umbrella. It's due to rust, but I had a a lotta good years from that $10 umbrella

        • +1

sounds like poor quality we need woodworm back

    • +1

Who cares about "social rules" - just do what you want!

    • +4

Ignore what others think and say. I do it all the time during school pickup. I don't care what they say. So men are not allowed to carry umbrella just cause people see you not manned up? not socially acceptable and being called a "wimp" get out of here…!

We are here to score an umbrella that is worth blocking UV rays not here to talk about stereotyping

  • +3

Are they better than Bunnings umbrellas?

    • +2

      Probably about on par.

  • Can these be used anywhere or just on golf courses?

    • You must yell 'fore' whenever you use it.

  • +2

I bought two of these, one with hook handle and one straight. The adhesive on hook handle one didn't last long and came off after a few uses, the straight one still lasts, so just beware but YMMV.

  • Yes I need a new brolly!

  • +1

These double as a reasonable door snake in winter too. Not a great one, but a lot better than nothing.

  • I bought 2 of these previously and still holding up pretty well. Definitely good value.

  • Does Aldi ever sell golf clubs? I saw a review of some on an English site but don't recall seeing any at Aldi here at any time. I'm thinking about upgrading from my $5 Op-shop specials…

  • This vs the bunnings umbrella?

    • Bunnings may be easier to deal with for returns/warranty.

On the other hand, not everyone wands to be a literal walking advertisement for Bunnings

      • Yea I'll grab one of these for now.

        • +1

I just did the math and the Bunnings one is more expensive. Please hand in your Ozbargain membership.

Bunnings may be easier to deal with for returns/warranty.

Since when was Aldi ever an issue?

  • +1

Thanks OP. This will be my first golf item ever

  • +1

Very handy for convertible car owners in Melbourne.

  • Anyone used the no drip umbrella?

  • Is it still a thing where each store probably only has 5 of these and people line up for hours beforehand?

    • +2

No one lining up at Chullora NSW store. Plenty of stock there

  • Can anyone recommend a decent umbrella that looks class and would last a while? Mum passed away 3 years ago today. She always looked soo lady-like taking her hook handle umbrella into work in the city. I love the look with a suit and stuff. Would be willing to spend like $50 - $100 if I have to. šŸ˜Š

    • +1

Blunt. Solid in a cyclone. Will not poke others in the eye. If you walk down the street in the rain and encounter another person with a Blunt, you give them a virtual high five because you both have the coolest looking umbrellas in town :)

      • I appreciate the recommendation, although definitely not my taste. šŸ˜…

Not a fan of the shape, but also the lack of a hook handle.. šŸ˜… Some colourways look great! I might grab a cheaper one of these to keep in the car since they seem soo robust. Would be good for the everyday situation on the road if I get stuck needing to walk somewhere.

Was actually hoping to get like an oldschool, hook handle umbrella, basically like something out of Gene Kelly's, Singing in the Rain.. šŸ˜…

  • What is the length of the umbrella from top to bottom? And size of canopy when open?

  • +1

Went to buy this, quality was absolute trash. Not sure what I expected for $10.

There were no vented canopy variant either. There was a no-drop version which had this ugly retractible hard plastic cover, and the golf umbrella with no vent.

They both look like they would fall apart upon first use, did not buy.

  • +1

I was disappointed because previous editions of these had a silver lining underside. It turns out they make great parasols. This version had a single layer, not suitable for keeping the sun's heat away. I bought one anyway to use as a winter rain umbrella so I could save wear and tear on the older umbrella.

    Nothing yet in my local.
