Which telco do they use? Cant find it on the website.

EDIT: Telstra - found it on coverage map

    • +2

Only uses part of telstra network unlike boost

      • +2

There's only Telstra and Boost who use the full Telstra network, no surprise here…

        • Is there a good way to find coverage now?

Difference between Telstra wholesale and boost as well as Optus and vodaphone ideally (these guys are still the same 1st party or nvmo?)

I'm not sure if losing the 3g bands or overselling spectrum are to blame but my Optus and voda plans are lucky to stream 480p YouTube in places where 100-300 mbps was mostly guaranteed since I signed up.

          • +6

@xentar: I find coverage map doesn't mean much at all.

Each Provider have small patchy spot which won't show on the coverage map (for example a certain area in middle of a train line, somewhere deep in a shopping center, one corner in one floor of a office building)

the good news is you won't need to test all of them, just test:
            1. Telstra/Boost
            2. Telstra MVNOs (Belong/Aldi/Woolies/Lyca/…)
            3. Optus 5G (same as below but with 5G on top)
            4. Optus MVNOs (Optus 4G/Coles/Amaysim/Catch/…)
            5. Vodafone 5G (same as below but 5G on top)
            6. Vodafone MVNOs (Kogan/TPG/…)

if you don't use 5G (or don't want to pay for 5G) you can skip out 3,5.

            1. Boost have 100%+ cashback for their 28 day sim.
            2. Lyca is on discount RN
            3. Not cheap to test…. The only 5G prepaid is sold @ $61
            4. Amaysim have cashback constantly
            5. $15 starter pack for 28 days prepaid
            6. Kogan first month free + $2 SIM.

@OMGJL: I remember whirlpool had a neat composition of towers and I think strength and noise or something like that at one point but I think you have the right idea now, just try everything.

Thanks for the deal summary. Very helpful.

              • +3

@xentar: The neat part is you can sim slut along your way while finding the best provider, the ozbargain way

            • @OMGJL:

Kogan first month free + $2 SIM.

That ended end of Feb. Is there a new one you might be referring to? Can't find it on their website.

        • +1

Just took up the Boost deal. Cant get reception in my backyard (even though i can see the tower 300m away) but works fine with Kogan…what a world.

In fairness, Kogan data is not great out bush. Boost is fine.

          • @tunzafun001: The tower you see might not be a Telstra one ;)

            • @OMGJL: Unfortunately is. It's Telstra / Optus.

I called customer help, and they said the tower is heavily congested and I should find a different network provider.

          • @tunzafun001: I was on a short holiday to Tassie. I had boost and someone else had cotd (Optus). We went to Bruny island.

As we went further south; my reception failed and there's picked up. Intially, they had troubles up to 'The Neck'. Believe someone else had Vodafone and they might as well thrown the phone out the car.

I do get more signal in more places like forests compared to Optus & would prefer it for travel.

But it's such a fickle thing that you might be missing signal in areas where you really shouldn't.

          • @tunzafun001: Well you might have to go back to the Vodafone network.

Easy to port In and out?

    • Hard to get in but easy to get out.

    • +5

The last time I tried them in early 2021 was by far the hardest port-in one could imagine. You can read about my experience here:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/599778

      • +2

thanks a lot for your tip mate, not worth the hassle even for $1 for 3 months …

  • +1

    Prepaid?? No credit check?

    • +3

      Yes it's prepaid.

Automatic Plan Renewal : For convenience, this Plan automatically renews every 28 days from the day of purchase (which is counted as the first day). You are free to notify us not to renew your Plan when it expires. Unless you notify us not to renew your Plan before it expires, we will automatically renew it when it expires (and we will automatically bill you the 28-day fee or deduct the 28-day fee from your available phone credit or chosen payment method) – any remaining allowances will not be carried over into the next 28-day validity period.

How do I stop Auto-renewal of the plan
Dial *190#, press send and follow the instructions on the screen from your mobile or
login to your account online and turn off your bundle auto renewal preferences in
the bundle details to cancel your auto renewal. Please make sure to receive the on-
screen confirmation. If you are not being able to receive the confirmation, feel free
to contact the customer service team on 122 Cancellation should be done 24 before
      the current plan expires.

      • +1

        thanks for the info,

so it looks like best to put another $6 credit in the account and turn off auto renewal? or does it require auto renewal on to deduct that $6 credit in the account?

  • +2

    Can I cancel after 3months?

    • +1

      Prepaid.

  • Do they do esim? 5g access?

  • +1

    Seems better than Mate

    • In what way? I’m thinking of either this or Mate as they’re both offering $1 for 3 months

      • It is prepaid rather than Mate is post paid and from the comments, Mate will start from when you order the Sim and not when activate it

        • +1

In this case do you know if the ‘offer ends on 31 March’ date is referring to activating before 31 March or to purchase the sim before 31 March (and activating it at a later stage?)

    • +1

How is it better than Mate. Atleast Mate offers a data bank whereas Lyca doesn't seem to offer any thing when it comes to banking data. There's nothing.

      • Forget banking, they seem to not be offering data itself.

  • +1

    No esim and 5g

  • +13

Wait, unlike Boost cashback we actually have to pay for this? /j

  • I don't know but my lyca mobile sim Internet is of no use. I never use it's 4G. Its like very olden days when it used to take hours to load a webpage.

  • +2

Wow, I can set and forget for 3 months instead of having to port out in 28 days?

  • +4

was wondering if they have volte yet. asked the chat support when they're going to switch over from 3g to volte calls due to telstra shutting down 3g next year and the guy replied saying they don't even know what volte is 😂😂😂

    • +1

Do they have volte? Only 240 of them!

  • Please help me understand. Is this $3 for 3 months of 28 days or $3 per a 28 day cycle - meaning its actually $9 for the full 3 cycles?

    • +1

      $9 for 3 28 day cycles

  • Same coverage as mate?

  • Can I I use new numbers?
    And can I cancel anytime?

  • +2

About 5-6 years ago these guys were an absolute shitshow. Have they changed? Porting was hellish

    • +1

was with them at that time for free calls between internal numbers, all other rates were expensive, never expected more except the free calls and free sims

Can I order now, but get a sim from the shops to activate now?

    • Wondering the same.
My Lebara 35+35Gb plan ended today & no data left, so need to port out in next few days, it was this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/756351.
Most likely port back to Circles soon (50GB for $10/Month for 6 Months).

But need a data plan with someone today, this seems like the best deal.
Or maybe not, many have had issues with them, maybe Mate is the way to go, just never head of them before.

Shame about no more Kogan deals, like $4.90 ect.
Have a few sim kits left.

  • +2

Last time I used lyca, porting-in needed a phone call to the customer service to complete. Data needed a roaming setting to be on. I wonder if it has changed…

    • No still the same. Port didnt work when activating sim online. Wasnt too painful. Just annoying

  • If it's Tesltra then can I port out of boost to Lyca and port back to boost next day?

  • Is there last date for activation of the sim or it comes reactivated when you order?

  • Excess data usage is at 7c/mb.

  • +1

    How long is delivery?

    • Wondering the same.

  • whats the last day we need to activate the sim?
    31/March ?

  • just in time to churn

  • Avoid this company if you can. The download speed is restricted below 1mbps

  • +4

    Is Lycra Mobile for cyclists?

    • +7

      Yes dad

  • -1

Lycra mobile is not always good for 5G

  • Last time I used them the activation pages seemed tacky and it was always stuck on roaming. Makes you wonder how well they are setup.

  • Thanks OP, $1 only to use in kiddo’s tablet. Good find!

    • No, 3x that… $3/month

  • +1

$3/28 days for 3 months, so I will be able to get 4 recharges @$3 within 3 months (~91 days)? Or 3 times only?

  • can't find if there is any restriction on when it needs to be activated. can i buy it now and activate in may?

  • +1

Bought. It has 30 days activation as below.
NOTE: Bundle PIN is only valid for 30 days from the purchase date.
To activate your plan please dial 116PIN number#
Does this mean the sim cannot be activated at "Standard Offer Sim" after 30days.

    • thank you!

  • +2

Lyca is a bad Telco. 2 years ago, I tried out their SIM. It was very difficult to activate your SIM, their customer service was unhelpful, their reception was bad. Used it once, and never wanted to return.

    • Weren't all of them pretty bad during Covid though?

  • Interested to hear what the port in process is like now. Used to be a shocker.

    • Having issues at the moment

  • 13xxxx and 18xx numbers not included. I will pass.

    • Yeah, that sucks.

  • What happen if i select 100gb per month, and allused up in less than a month? Would it auto charge for extra data or there is an option to buy extra data pack or not?

  • Is this best option to port out of Boost mobile CR combo cashback deals ? and then back on boost ??

BTW when does the sim expire ? or like the last date to activate this with getting the same 28day starter kit usage?

Kogan ones are already done with cheap prices

  • I thought it was only me who had bad experience with Lycamobile two years ago. A lot of others also had to go through those hassles.
Never had success to port in, used the number and threw it away I think after turning off auto recharge if I remember correctly. Even activating the sim card with a new number wasn't straightforward. Data speed was about 1Mpbs.

    • If I read this comment, I would have not purchased and activated their simcard….worst experience ever. Now I'm anxiously waiting to port in my existing number after making several phone calls, even if that's what I did during activation…never gonna use this company ever again.

      • Is your porting issue resolved yet ?

        • No I bought another prepaid sim card which is very annoying as I could have just bought Boost….

  • -1

Anybody know of any amazing deal for Euro / Spain based Sims for Short Term (30-60 days)? I see heaps of these for Aus, surely there's an equivalent?

    • Lebara had this deal which has now expired: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/756351 but as that ended I noticed the same thing at Coles for the same price. But I just checked and couldn't find it on here. So I don't know when the Coles one expires, but I bought one just a couple of days ago. So if it is still current it probably ends in the next couple of days.

You have to activate it by 31/5/23. The SIM packets had an extra outer advertising sleeve slipped over the normal 35GB SIM, but it has a window cut out out of it so the SAME code shows through. That is, the sleeve wasn't necessary to get the $9 price because the bar code is the same.

So if I were you, I'd go to Coles, pick up a 35GB Lebara SIM, and ask the checkout operator to check the price to see if it's still $9.

Like I said do it NOW though because if it is still current it probably ends this month. Look up their site for the countries you can call.

And if you want 60 days just buy two. When you sign up you don't have to enter any payment info. So you can activate SIM 1 for April, don't enter any payment details, it will expire on day 30. And activate SIM 2 for May. Total cost $18 for 60 days with some international calls (sorry I don't know how many/where, as above check their site.)

  • I love how Lyca’s month is always 28 days :)

  • I remember Lyca. I was going to go with them months ago. But i didn't because there's no data bank. So not really good if you wish to have a data bank on your plan. You basically forfeit any unused data each month. It's as like as if it's 10 years ago or some thing when data bank didn't exist.

  • Anyone having any issues with their website (Slow and always weird loading) and contacting people?

Also I've notice the SIM takes a long time to get to you.

    • I ordered one and there was only an order confirmation email and then no news of anything. I don't know how long it will take to receive it. (I would like to cancel the order if possible, the service experience given by Lyca is really not good enough)

Meanwhile, I also ordered a mate (for my family) and Mate sent me three emails one after another with tracking of logistics.

      Obviously Mate is much better!

      • Still no SIM .. What is going on..

        • Today I got the SIM card sent by Mate, which was sent from Sydney to Melbourne. Still no word from Lyca.

      • Whats the mate prepaid offer?

        • +1

1 for the first three months: https://www.letsbemates.com.au/mate/1-mobile/

I just received Lyca's enevlope this morning, the SIM card has been sent to me.

          • @Arks: Is it prepaid, or credit check plan?

            • @tunzafun001: Should be prepaid. I'll activate it tomorrow

              • @Arks: It's postpaid.

"At our discretion, we may obtain a credit report about you to help us decide whether to accept your application for service and to help us collect overdue amounts."

                • @wakie: Cheers, thought so. I'll avoid that one.

What about this Lyca deal, Prepaid or postpaid?

          • @Arks: Thanks dude, i just took this offer up. Hoping to get sim card delivered tomorrow :)

  • What’s with the use of unlimited?

  • I get errors on checkout.

Is it due to using a Coles Pre paid Mastercard?
