I have been keeping my eye on this one and it's come down in price again. From earlier posts, I can see that the discounted price of this EGO edger attachment and power head has consistently gone up:

  • Nov 21: $238
  • Mar 22: $260
  • June 22: $268
  • Aug 22: $273

Now at $255.51 it's a decent price considering it is usually $335 for this grey import combo on Amazon and if you were buying in Australia in store you would have to buy the power head (PH1400E) and edger attachment (EA0800) separately for $349 and $199 respectively.

Please be aware that this only has Amazon's 1 year warranty and is not covered by EGO's 5 year warranty as this combo is a grey import from overseas and not distributed by Australian distributor EGO Power Plus who offer 5 year.

The EGO batteries you buy here in Australia work with this power head.

  • I did a price protection yesterday. Good stuff

  • Oh man, I'm so tempted by this. I'm in the EGO ecosystem for garden tools but I'm also in the Ryobi ecosystem for all my other hand held tools meaning I own batteries for both. Do I get this with 1 year grey import warranty or get the Ryobi edger skin from Bunnings with local 6 year warranty?

Makes more sense to go the safe route but with this deal, I get to own the powerhead and get other attachments for it in the future. Hmm.. decisions decisions…

    • +1

I have both the ryobi 18v and this. The ego far outpowers the ryobi.

      • The ego also outpowers the ryobi 36v kit

        • +1

I have both, and while you are absolutely correct - the Ego is a more solid build and considerably heavier unit - as well as being more powerful.

But across multiple properties, I’ve never found the 36v Ryobi wanting for power. It’s a great piece of equipment which will often be considerably better for anyone who struggles with the hefty weight of the Ego (which I love!). Even the 2.5a battery on the lower power setting of the Ego carves through everything I’ve thrown at it - as does the 36v Ryobi…

          • +1

@UncleRico: Yeah agreed, my batteries on the Ryobi are starting to age though, and I've got the older brushless mower, and the plastic handle is about to fall apart and fall off. I think they've fixed that in the newer models, but I'm going to repair it, then look to replace it with an Ego eventually.

            • @jupiterbrody: Yeah I have the 36v 52cm brushless Ryobi mower w/ 6ah battery too. It’s handle has also grown increasingly flimsy and is a large part of the reason why my Ego feels so much more sturdy by comparison.

    • I was in the same position about 18 months ago when the ego was discounted at a terrific price. I also aleady have the charger and multiple batteries for other ego tools. I have no regret getting the ego edger - it is much more powerful than the Ryobi and gets the job done a lot faster (allowing me to sit finish fast and on the porch with a beer watching my neighbour struggle with his Ryobi edger!). I also have a lot of Ryobi tools and they do some things well but are underpowered for others.

    • Maybe in eBay/AliExpress there's a ego/Ryobi battery adaptor?

    • +1

The 18 v ryobi is gutless , would take forever. Their 36 V one is good. Would Never recommend the 18V edger or whipper snipper

      • Ryobi whipper snipper is useless, but I'd recommend the 18v edger. I've a 900m2 block with a decent amount of edging alongside paths and driveways and it is well up to task. As long as you keep the edges maintained it's more than powerful enough and I see no reason to upgrade.

      • +1

        Agree.

Through a quirk of fate, I have the 36v Ryobi and the 56v Ego Power+, and both are right up their with the best power tools / yard equipment I own.

Whilst the Ego is unadoubtedly the more solid unit - being comprised almost entirely out of metal compared to the Ryobi which comprises metal and plastic - it is considerably heavier and more cumbersome, and thus my better half will only use the Ryobi. Presumably whilst I attend to the cooking and sewing…

Biggest benefit of the Ego, is that (contrary to the instruction manual), it works very well in reverse. By slightly elevating it so that the wheel does not automatically propel it forward, dragging it backwards creates a deeper trench which is very useful for those times when either the finished grass level falls below the adjacent hard surface, or when you're re-establishing your edges after skipping them for a few mows in a row.

Great gear. The $208 I spent on it was arguably my best ever Ego purchase, and at this price, it is still a super deal when you consider the price of the powerhead and the edger seperately, which is otherwise the only was you can purchase them in Australia. And if you change the three letter prefix from the US style to the AU, (from memory is think its Nxx - or whatever prefix is on other Australian sold gear, to Axx) you can register it on the Ego website. I've never had to claim warranty on any of the Ego gear I've bought off Amazon, so can't say whether they'd honour any claim, but this does allow you to register it.

  • Awesome tool, very powerful

  • +4

Love having a decent 8-Inch Edger.

    • crickets

      • +4

crickets? You responded in 60 seconds.

        • That's what she said.

(Not sure who negged you though. Probably Karen again)

  • Is there no way to register this one with ego to get the full warranty?

    • Nope

      • Shame. Was after one of these but that feels a bit of a deal-breaker.

Already needed the warranty on my ego mower

    • Yep - see comment above.

It will allow you to register. Can't say whether or not it will allow you to claim.

  • How do these compare to petrol equivalents?

    • +14

      they use less petrol

    • I haven’t used these but I get the impression that these are fairly equivalent to petrol in terms of power. Whereas often people just buy 18v garden tools that really aren’t up to the task or 36v ones that are better and can be quite usable, but I believe these are 56v so they’re likely on par with a proper petrol one for power.

If you had a farm or a landscaping business and needed to go for hours then these might be a problem because the battery is most of the cost of the tool and they don’t last that long. Long enough for the average person tidying up their own suburban backyard.

I guess the other thing is that while you don’t need to buy petrol and electricity is probably cheaper, the battery is going to be the first thing to die, and those cost quite a lot. I’m not sure about the longevity of these batteries specifically compared to other brands, or the longevity of the physical construction of this tool either, so those could be factors but I get the impression that Ego are perceived to be near the top of the pack for electric garden tools so that should be some reassurance. Batteries can be made to last longer if you follow a strict process of charging it and using only a bit of the power and then leaving it and then using it or charging it again before it loses too much power. They like being in the 60-80% charged status while sitting around doing nothing. Being left flat is very bad and being left fully charged is meant to be bad as well. So if you could do all that then they’d last long enough. Just something to keep in mind. No servicing or petrol (still electricity isn’t free) but the battery will not last anywhere near as long as a well maintained Honda engine for example. You’ll be able to easily buy replacement batteries and just slap them in however. Just different attributes to consider.

      • For the purpose of your comparison Ego is 50.4v. 56v is just marketing, it’s the same as companies claiming their 18v tools are ‘20v Max’

        • Makes sense. It’s still a step above the 36v tools. You see some market those as 40v as well

          • @rhino015: Agreed! I’ve got a few Ego tools and the performance is definitely a step above the 36v stuff I’ve tried.

      • +1

If you leave the Ego batteries on the charger they will automatically discharge to 40% after a month and maintain. Charger also has a fan to keep the battery cool during charging.

        • Nice. That’s handy. I guess the downside then is that you might be expecting full capacity out of the battery when you use it but then you run out of juice and have to wait until later. I guess you could unplug it and plug it back in earlier that day or the day before. Something to be aware of at least

  • Sold out as I was adding to cart - said 2 left at the time.

  • WTF 520$?

Any. cheaper edger out there in the wild somewhere? Thanks heaps.

  • +1

Can anyone recommend where to buy the replacement batteries for a cheaper price or if the alternatives from eBay or AliExpress work? Thanks

    • +1

I can’t speak for these ones. But I bought the ryobi 18v Chinese knock offs batteries and they really do seem to be under spec. The 5Ah one definitely runs the tools for less time than the genuine 4Ah. Still cheap but something to factor in. The other thing with the cheap ryobi ones was that the clip to hold the battery in place is a real pain in the arse. It feels like a lot of effort to release the battery from the charger or the tool. They are a lot cheaper though.

I have pulled apart failed Makita batteries from eBay that a relative bought. The battery was supposed to be 5Ah but it only had 1.5Ah cells (marked as such) and cheap crap cells at that.
Also did not have the proper protection circuitry & thermal sensor.
Absolute waste of time & money.

Also, I won't ever use knockoff batteries purely from the fire risk point of view, let alone performance.

      • My brother in law had a Milwaukee 9.0ah battery fail on him.
        1 cell was gone.
But the individual 18650 cells were about $10-$20 and lots of fakes

        LG hg2 I think…
I wouldn’t recommend aftermarket batteries. You will get what you paid for unfortunately meaning ‘buy cheap, buy twice’

Having a decent battery will mean it I’ll be recharged less for a longer life from less charging cycles and overheating when under load…

As the battery drains faster from maximum, so does the voltage, resulting in lower speeds.
A 2.0ah battery vs a 6.0ah battery is night and day. More torque and more punch for longer. Otherwise your serious tools are seriously limited. Not such a problem for a blower or a vacuum (filters kept clean to reduce load)

    • +1

Thanks for the the replies. Definetly a lot more to consider than just price. I guess I’ll stick to the genuine batteries

  • That was $208 at one point, which would have been rude not to buy at.

Aparently there is a new 3kW version with carbon shaft of this overseas.

So this old 2.4kW IIRC model might go lower soon.

    • Wow. That would be a ball-tearer.

Whilst the power of the existing unit is ample, a lighter version with even more grunt would be incredible.

      • Theres no plans to bring it to AU though. So Amazon might be the only option

        • I hope not.

I don’t need another edger, but would find it hard to resist…

  • +1

    The deal has expired.

  • Why does this go back to $520? It was never that price…yeah I missed out. Want the power head + hedge trimmer really but this was a step in the right direction.

  • For any buyers, don't forget to stock up on some non-genuine replacement 8" blades. In my experience, they last just as long as ridiculously expensive Ego branded replacements

I paid $44 for ten, a year ago instead of the $30 single Ego blade. They are currently out of stock, but you should be able to find replacements for under $5 each through selective Amazon browsing. Plenty of alternatives.

  • oh! missed it again.
