  • What's the warranty period? 1 year or 3 years?

  • 7200rpm or 5400rpm?

    • and can it be taken out of the case and used inside a pc to complement an SSD

      • yeah, I was wondering the same thing…
need a new internal harddrive for my tv shows, and if I could do this, I think it would be my cheapest option

      • Of course they can be taken out. But if they fail, you may not be able to claim warranty.

Some of the drives inside are not "flagged" as OEM drives, and the warranty checker (working off the drive serial number) shows a normal retail warranty period. If that is the case, then you don't need a receipt etc, you just post it directly back to the HDD manufacturer.

But the 3TB WD that is in my Buffalo is a OEM drive with NO warranty via WD.

According to previous deals Seagate or Western Digital 7200rpm drives are used.

    • Mine has a 7200 Seagate HDD inside.

    • Info from the previous thread… http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/73422

Firmware: CC82 Rotation Rate: 7200 RPM

      B3:

Mine is 2011.08.18 and the HDD inside is a Western Digital WD30EZRX

    Quite a pretty good price.Model is STAY3000300

    • Call it USB 2, junk at any cost.

      • Its just FYI. What matters is the HDD inside, Seagate is a better brand and some ppl just ripped off the case just want to get the drive. A lot of ppl encountered problems with the USB 3.0 case. Not really portable, have software issue and require external power supply. I would prefer to buy the WD 1TB portable drive at $103 delivered from amazon which is much portable , easily plugged into USB and less likely to have software issue.

See here for few reviews regarding this 3TB buffalo drive: (2 out of 5 rated 1 star)

  • A basic dedicated server can handle 500 people within 1 hour. How Can Bing Lee not be working?

  • i just got through. sure was slow though!
got stuck on the "place order page" after paypal, but got there in the end.
    thanks op!

  • same very slow but got one..thanks op

  • site is soo slow, i think i only ordered 1 in the end up.
    careful if u refresh

  • Is the delivery already free? or we need to use the code

  • This is a pretty good HDD. I got the 2TB a few weeks ago.

  • Thanks OP. I got one. You don't need the code as it is free shipping anyways.
    Cheers

  • Overcome their system problem by calling their 1300 980 399 (Mon - Fri 9am - 8pm Weekends 12pm - 8pm ) & order it like I've just done now :)

The lady says they have trouble too. I'll get mine delivered 3-5 working days :)

  • Took a while but got through. Thanks for the info OP!

  • Does anyone know if the power management is implemented through hardware (and thus Operating System independent) , or some software driver/app?

I'm planning on connecting the device to a 24-7 powered Ubuntu-based apple tv, and would like the drive to spin down when not in use (this would drop power from 12 W to 2.2 W in power saving mode).

    • I have one of these Buffalos from the last Ozbargain deal. I haven't yet seen it spin down. I haven't checked properly, so I might go and plug it in an see.

My Verbatim USB 3.0 drive spins down (after a while) even if it's left plugged into USB and the computer is powered up.

meh SSD taking over the world now. mechanical drives soon to be a thing of the past.

    • +5

I haven't seen too many 3TB SSDs getting around yet.

    • +1

Apart from the capacity issue (and cost per GB), I doubt that will happen until they get the reliability of SSD's up to the same level as platter drives.

  • Cheers
Needed a back up drive and this is a good price.

  • For those in Newcastle, price matched with Hardley Normal for $145.

    They had heaps in stock.

    • Receipt?

      • If your in Newy, don't need a receipt..

just call Bing Lee Bennetts Green to make sure they still have stock (when I rang this afternoon guy there said he had plenty) but make sure you ask that it's $149…

then walk over to HN and tell them and they should give you the better price ($145)

  • Aaaaaaaand it's gone. Gone. It's gone.

  • dupe

    • LOL sold out anyway… and if you write dupe you should link it….

      • The product page is showing as limited stock and it added to my cart although i'm not going to be buying it. So there must be a few units left in stock.

    • Who controls that site. headquarters? Acting like jackasses with levels fluctuating from OOS, In stock, and just now: Limited stock. Damn it make up your minds - & - provision things responsibly.

    • meant duplicate reply…. <G>

  • Please get more stock in at this price.

  • Still in store, just picked up two in Alexandria just before 6

  • Out of stock now. It's all over.

  • Looks to be back in stock.
    But when you try to add it to the cart it says;
"This product is currently out of stock."

  • I was able to buy one online a few minutes ago. Maybe worth retrying every now and again.

  • I grabbed one too

  • gone (out of stock)

  • In stock!!!

  • out-of-stock, waiting patiently for 4TB to become better value, I think they have a higher failure rate and that's why there not so popular :(

  • This product is currently out of stock.

  • Has anyone received there's yet?

I placed a order of 4 and only received 1 box with 2 inside… do we get them in two separate deliveries etc?

    • Still waiting on my 2.
      When did you order?

  • When it was posted here.. i got two drives in box with a shit load of bubble wrapping but missing etc drives..

  • I received mine at midday today in Melbourne.

Interesting though that when I try and install the software it's saying 'No hard drives are connected'.

    /tech dramas.

    • Getting the same error as well, gave up on it and just installed the additional software.

  • Received mine today (2-8-12) 3pm Perth, haven't opened the box.

    • Er nothing is happening….

      • had to install usb3 drivers :)
        all good

        • do you have to install the usb3 drivers to unlock the full fury of higher speeds?
because mines reading 20-25mbs transfer speeds

usb3 ports, nothing installed, straight out of the box

        • I didnt install the motherboard drivers that came with it so the drive didnt work at all!!
So after installing the usb3 drivers the hard drive came to life, it worked on the usb2 ports fine but that not what I wanted.
I will have to test the speed an see what I get.

What is bugging me is that, sitting on top of my tower, its quite a noisy drive… might leave it on the ground, hide it away… suppose I will have to use that sleep program that comes on the CD..
