Look: We didn't rise to the top of the food chain just so we could abandon stone age materials as wrappings around information age gadgets. Plus, how else are we going to get our vitamins? It's the circle of life dude. And not everyone with an iphone can afford a silicone case. Checkmate.

Every time you breathe air you're killing millions of microbes.

        • So?

      • -1

        I think I'm in love

    • +2

No, the cows are killed for the eye fillets, ribeyes, t-bone, porterhouse, burger patties and minces.

      The leather is by-product

      • Not necessarily. If you want massive production in a short time frame from a limited number of suppliers (Apple won't deal with thousands of suppliers, they will deal with a few) who will guarantee a certain number of units per month, then you've got to kill that cow. In these circumstances the meat can become the by-product, which is nuts.

There are ways to sustainably avoid that, if production volumes are low enough.

Are they low enough? No idea. None of us know. I just know Apple wants a LOT of leather air-tag holders made.

Don't think I need super high grade leather for this key fob

      • +5

Australia has poor labelling regulations for leather. A lot of the time "genuine leather" is bicast or bonded leather. In fact, most cheap products declaring they use "genuine leather" use these.

Bicast leather takes split leather (the fragile, fibrous lower layers of corium) and coats it in PU plastic. This is essentially the same process as making synthetic "pleather", except the underlying material is low-grade leather instead of cloth. In both cases, as soon as the PU layer starts peeling, you're left with a mess, and there's not much you can do to fix it. In fact, bicast leather can be worse than pleather, because at least with pleather, the cloth you're left with is usually somewhat stable. Low-grade split leather will instead often keep flaking off fibres.

Bonded leather is similar, but the underlying substrate isn't even a single layer of leather. It's just leather scraps glued together with a PU binder, then embossed with a leather-like pattern. Sometimes the substrate can be as little as 10% leather.

Frankly, I can't think of any reason "genuine" bicast or bonded leather would be preferable to pleather. It's no more durable. Both bonded/bicast leather and pleather will often start flaking and peeling after a year or two, neither can be effectively polished to achieve longevity (because the upper layer is just plastic). They're basically the same thing in the end.

We need to raise more awareness to this awful issue.

  • Thanks op grabbed a couple. The Amazon/Ebay cheapies work in a pinch but I have found mine already falling apart slowly, these should fare better.

Avoid this carabiner style at all costs. I have the official Apple one and wanted to give it one star, but they've already removed it from their range. It is too easy to accidentally press the carabiner open in your pocket and separate them from your keys. This is an anti pattern and will probably lead to you losing your keys MORE than without an airtag.

    • I had to wrap mine around sticky tape

    • +3

Swap the carabiner clip with a regular ring, problem solved.

    • +1

This exact thing happened to me. Had to replace my garage key fob for $100. Cost more than the AirTag.

It is too easy to accidentally press the carabiner open in your pocket and separate them from your keys.

That's not the only issue. If they are laying at even a slight angle and you sit on them or apply any other kind of heavy force (e.g. a heavy bag) the airtag can "pop out" of the holder. This issue exists for not just Apple's leather case but similar PU leather/silicone (anything soft) ones on Amazon etc. Stupid design IMO to make the "holder" for a tracker for important things in a flexible "case".
I got an airtag for my elderly mother recently and after reading all the bad feedback of the airtags popping out of flexible cases and being lost, I managed to track down a good case that attaches to a keyring. It's made of plastic (hard but the high quality type) and it twist locks together holding the airtag firmly inside, then when it is twisted the keyring hole is aligned, so as long as you have a keyring through that hole the case can't come apart. It's also more compact and closer in size to the actual airtag so less risk of it being bumped etc because it's closer to the object you attach it to. From Amazon AU it cost under $4 I can't remember exactly but it is cheaper and way better in design.

Usually these airtags are for clumsy and less aware people so it's just ridiculous to me how bad the official airtag case design is, and of course all the cheaper alternatives copy Apple so the vast majority being sold are of the "soft flexible" type.

Edit: Here I found it. https://www.amazon.com.au/Protective-Plastic-Keyring-Hanging…
Seems like the price has gone up since (was something like $3.99) but also found a 3 pack that makes them $4.60 each.
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Protective-Keyring-Hanging-Luggage…

Also now just realized, they are a clone of a Belkin airtag holder which is $19.95 for just one. https://www.amazon.com.au/Belkin-AirTag-Case-Protective-Resi…

      • Thanks for all this.. I had got four tags on the last special but not got around to using them bc I didn't have holders sorted (nor an old iphone for that matter). Can't wait to get rid of the utterly crap 'chippolo' tags I was using.

        • Just be careful of the "black ones" that look the same shape. When I was searching I saw those but their title and description states they are made of soft silicone, not plastic like the blue ones I linked to.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Yes I thought I'd found a bargain when I spotted four of those silicon ones for less than three of the hard ones. In fact the hardshell ones just arrived, and they seem fine. I think that's the fastest online order I've ever done!

            • @Horacio:

Yes I thought I'd found a bargain when I spotted four of those silicon ones for less than three of the hard ones.

Yeah hard plastic ones are only available in blue when I checked.

In fact the hardshell ones just arrived, and they seem fine.

Cool they should be identical to the one I got and solid. The one I put on my mother's airtag has never had any issues and still securely on the airtag+keys. I guess all I can say is be careful when you close the case, make sure all the way around there are no gaps so that everything is secure all the way around.

It's so simple but effective and really the best case available IMO. The only reason I can think of for designing the soft cases like that is they wanted customers to "lose" their airtags, so they would need to buy another. And then somewhere in the wastewater drainage there's like 100 airtags all piled up and stuck on a grill lol.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: Yes they really should have designed them with a hole built in, like the otherwise crappy chippolos I have

I don't understand why you'd put a tag on the outside of the bag. Hide it somewhere inside, no chance of it getting ripped off or removed by nefarious baggage handlers. You don't want anyone to know your luggage is being tracked.

    • +5

      keys

      • +4

Even better. Putting keys on the outside of the bag will totes scare those nefarious handlers away.

        • yeah

    • Well, even hidden, the tag will notify nearby phones that is is nearby, and make a sound so the thief can find it. iPhone will also instruct the thief on how to locate and deactivate the tag. It’s a worthless product for theft and loss prevention.

In my experience these "genuine leather" (aka the worst quality leather) AirTag holders wear out and fall apart pretty quickly. I've been through three of them on my keys before switching to a silicon one that has held up much better. Doesn't look as nice, but it's much harder wearing.

Now, I haven't used this specific brand's leather case. It might be much better than all the other ones I've used. But nowadays I'm just wary of "genuine leather" products for high-use items. Of course, if you just want to hook it on the inside of a bag or something and it won't be handled much, this might be perfect.

  • Shipping kills the deal

  • these key chains are useless if you own a tesla. :D

    • Because Tesla owners don't have homes?

      • they have smart homes with smart locks that don't require any kind of keys.

    • Again I have to recommend others to avoid any "soft" cases. If they are not perfectly flat on a surface and you sit on them or put pressure on them (a bag or large box etc) the Airtag can pop out of the soft case and you can lose your airtag (which is the most expensive thing). It even happens with the original Apple cases.

Yeah sure you might be able to find them again using iPhone, but if it's somewhere very far away you might just give up going back or forget about it. It could also lose connection (not enough iPhones nearby) or run out of battery/have the battery removed.

  • Now $9.
