      It’s localised to YOUR house

      • +11

At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localised entirely to your house!?!

        • +3

          SKINNERRR!!!

      • Wow didn't know technology has advanced to this level. A good buy then

    • +2

Or willy weather which might be more localised
      https://www.willyweather.com.au/

      • +3

Willy weather, weather on the web, the original weather underground etc all rely on private weather stations like these for their data.

    • This is hilarious 😂

  • +1

Interesting, the design looks different from my $99 one. Not sure how it measures wind speed and direction as I can’t see an obvious rudder thingy.

EDIT: upon reading I wonder how much maintenance the self emptying rain fall meters (like mine) need…
Seems like it may not be as accurate as a tipping bucket compared to some reviews

    I bought a $99 433mhz WH-1080 and use RTL-433 to read it.

Funnily enough the WH-1080 doesn’t include humidity.: this done…

Outcome: This one is much newer and rugged (less moving parts), and easier to integrate into HA (still struggling with my RTL-433 mhz mapping)…. bit the bullet, thanks OP

It uses ultrasonic sensors to determine speed and direction. They’re actually more accurate than traditional anemometers, particularly for gusts, but you don’t get the visual cue when you glance out the window.

The rain gage is haptic, which means that it registers the number and intensity of raindrops.

All of this means that it’s much lower maintenance, and much more reliable than traditional systems, particularly in extreme cold environments.

        Music to my ears, thanks

        • I also went down the RTL path until I got the hub.

It supports both ethernet and wifi, and the data can be viewed via the app, but can easily be fed to Home Assistant.

Now I want the Wittboy, but can’t really justify having two hubs. Such is life.

      • The tipper rain gauge on my weather station got blocked on Saturday. Had to get it down and clear the leaf out. That would not happen with one of these.
On the other hand, not sure what would happen if a bird walked on it/did its business.

        • It comes with bird spikes

  • Great price for the GW1101 though

    • It is, after reading this: https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40812.0

I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade from my 2 year old Fine Offset WH1080, which is comparable.
It looks like the technology is a world apart in the new model.

    Thanks dude! Just got one!
My camelcamel price alert wouldn't have picked up on this

  • which one is better?

    This one (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09TZZ99D7?th=1)

    or this one posted?

    • This one is an older design, most of the price is probably the fancy LCD screen as the actual unit itself can be had for $99

    • May was well get this

      • I have that display. TBH I don’t like having outside temp below inside temp.
Waidro’s link has a better display. Dearer of course.

Whats everyone's thoughts on this as an entry into weather stations?
As a father i am now obviously weather and climate control obsessed, so i think its time to take it to the next level.

  • hmm I got my hue setup with IFTTT to turn lights to a specific color when it rains, and you can probably do similar programs with your standard smart lights like Tuya, or LIFX too with like Samsung smart things or IFTTT or home assistant.

Can also just stick a samsung smart things multi purpose sensor in room for other stuff like vibration, humidity, temperature etc.

Really unsure why you would want to spend $150 + on just this feature

    • Just curious why you get the lights to change colour? From what colour to what colour when it rains? Are these outdoor lights?

      • I like my lights to be less yellow when it rains. :)

  • I've got one of these and its pretty good. I got it for Xmas and its been pretty good.

    • Do you have to climb up and change the batteries on the main unit? I want to put one on my roof.

      • +1

I've got the ecowitt branded version of this but it's identical and I put it up in Sep 2019 and have yet to change the batteries and it's still going strong.

        • Thanks. Fascinating. I wonder whether this would be true if the winters had regular frost for weeks…..

        • I think I set up mine in Feb 2019. I am thinking of changing the batteries anyway. It would be just my luck for it to stop working in an extended weather event when the solar panel gets no love.

      • +1

Yes, you do need to change batteries but my understanding is they can last for 12 months. Been fine since Xmas and I have it on the roof.

Anyone have suggestions on how to mount these things? I was considering buying tv antenna mount and attaching to my chimney

    • +1

      Yep that’s what I did

      • Can you mount this on the exisiting TV antenna mount?

  • Tempted just to get the UV meter.

    • +1

Or assume high on most days.

      • Yeah I already do, I just like it in the early arvo on cloudy days to give myself permission not to wear sunscreen.

    • It just says high just after the sun comes up.

      • So it doesn't give a number like the UV index? Bummer.

        • It does. Not sure it actually means much as the sun still seems pretty watery once it gets to higher levels.
Just don’t spend too much time in the sun.

          • @entropysbane: I think the problem might be that the UV is pretty much always high in australia.

Cancer council has a pretty good app sunsmart

  • Cool that you can use a variety of apps for this station, including weowow. I am very tempted.

  • this is cool. couple questions :

    1. so this runs on rechargeable batteries ?

    2. is there an internal screen I can have inside and see the info displayed? if yes, what would you recommend?

    • This one doesn't come with a screen, and yes it has batteries but mainly runs off an internal solar panel.

      • Thanks, yes i can see no screen but wondering if i can get one that is compatible .

I dont want to be pulling out my phone each time i want to see the weather stats.

  • +1

Expired, no longer a coupon option?

  • You know, we really don't need it, don't need it, don't need it…..

  • For the love of the bargin…

  • Damn you ecowitt, where's my coupon?

  • Noob question but why not this one? https://www.amazon.com.au/ECOWITT-WH2910C-Weather-Wireless-F…
Both 7-in-1, but this one comes with a screen. A bit more expensive as it's $30 off as opposed to $50

  • I always get so overwhelmed looking at weather stations.
What would a professional one be?
