When a company starts offering life time subscriptions alarm bells go off in my head. IMO it screams “we’re desperate for cash to pay debts in the short term, no time to think about the long term, that’s future management’s problems”.

How do they plan on paying content creators their ongoing fees, if lifetime subscribers aren’t paying anything.

  • So essentially you’re prepaying for 5 years subscription and hoping the sites relevant beyond that.

    • relevant beyond that.

Or even exists at all. Or they’re still honouring these “lifetime” subscriptions.

yeah I'm no stranger to this. Next year they will start transitioning all new videos on Nebula Plus which surprise surprise isn't covered by your lifetime subscription of standard nebula.

Unless you look at it considering this annual

Actually about 16 years if you get the curiosity stream/nebula yearly bundle at ~$23aud via lots of different YouTubers see Crownanchors comment.

    • The service is quite good but I wouldn't risk it. Side note; my grandfather took out a lifetime subscription to National Geographic in the 1950's and we were still getting them delivered in the early 2000's after his death.

Just a quick google search reveals https://smartbundle.com/products/smart-bundle?type=subscript… USD42 a year with other channels.

Also, im sure when bundled Curiosity stream with Nebula have seen prices less that USD20 a year, is this the same or a different Nebula?

    Edit:
This is the one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747955 A23 a year with curiosity stream and nebula.

I’ve had this for years and it’s the best value ever.
      Curiosity stream is great

  • This is a flip of a coin really….
Nebula could still be relevant in 5+ years, and if it is it's a good deal.

Or, nebula can shutdown or no longer become relevant within the next 5 years and it's an incredibly bad deal.

A bit too early to tell which way it will go

The beautiful thing about lifetime subscriptions is that you can hand them down from generation to generation, and nobody needs to know you’re using a dead person’s account

    • +2

Assuming the service doesn’t die first.

      • +1

I don’t think a service can die. I mean — think about it — it doesn’t even have a heartbeat

        • +1

Thats very interesting tharlow. The lack of a heartbeat maybe why so many businesses are no longer around.

My getflix subscription will be my legacy to my kids

As Dave Wiskus (ceo and one of the founders) said, "Lifetime isn't meant to be the cheapest option; annual is still the best value." souce

Also if anyone is interested on why they are doing this "Lest anyone worry, we aren't hurting for cash. But cash is king, and if we want to do bigger, more ambitious things in the short term, more cash is good. We'd rather do things like this to raise capital than, say, sell our souls to VCs." souce

  • $374 to listen to podcasts, oh my, cant wait lol

  • I have noticed that the Curiosity Stream Nebula bundle price has gone up./. Anyone got a link for the old price?

  • I got this a while back on the yearly plan thinking I'd have lots of interesting kids stuff to show.

In short there wasn't, it was more longer form documentry stuff.

The curiosity stuff was a big letdown. I'd see a good podcast on something, and only the first episode was included and the rest was on some other kind of plan.
