  • Booking my way to Europe…what's the best way to book via Airbnb? Buy these and "load" onto your account like Amazon and book through Qantas Airbnb? Any advice appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

I'd check to see if they region lock if I were you, I wanted to buy uber gc once, then I found out later that it's region lock and I couldn't use it os

To be honest, I lived in Germany and did extensive travelling over the last 2 years.

Unless you want something specific (romantic castle in the hills, or a cave in the cliffs of Crete) I would use booking.com.

Their prices have matched, if not better than Airbnb, and far more reliable.

I suggest using a mix of both. Second to this, if it’s obviously a hotel using Airbnb to promote, find out the name and location of the hotel and search it on Google. I have saved 100s avoiding the Airbnb tax.

      Have fun!!!

airbnb is toxic and harms communities. It is part of the housing problem in MANY countries including Australia.
If you want away from home accommodation, book a hotel. Apples with Apples; Hotels are cheaper, much better service and they won't steal your money because you didn't do a bond clean after your one night stay.

    • In the long run, companies like Airbnb and Uber do more harm than good

I agree there very big and legit criticisms. But the fact is they do address gaps in the market (both location and price), open up new opportunities, and can still be better value especially outside of cities. You just need to have your witts about you to do a little leg work (granted, less seem that way inclined these days). For example, i booked a nice little house for a week on northern NSW coast about 50m from the beach. It was great. The nearest other accomm was many, many kms away, not pet friendly, and was vastly inferior motels and caravan/cabin parks for similar price. By far the best option.

It can also be a good option overseas where condos/apartment/villas attract a tourist premium, even in places like USA or Thailand it can still make sense depending on what you're after. But it can also be poor or on par with traditional hotel type options, and where that is the case, we avoid AirBnB.

      • I agree; as a customer, it's a nice service, same as Uber.

I don't think enough people realize the damage it's doing here in Australia though (and probably around the world).

If you don't like Airbnb, don't book one.
But you don't have to shove your views down other people's throats.
Some of us are happy to have the option.

      Hotels are cheaper

Not always true unfortunately. Plus if hotels do end up being cheaper, it's because Airbnb has put pressure on them to be competitive. I'd hate to see what happens to hotel prices if Airbnb disappears.

      • +3

Agree, especially when you book an Airbnb for 4 or more people to share the costs.
Also even if a hotel is cheaper, the Airbnb in most cases has more room, has a laundry and kitchen, which will offset the higher cost of a hotel.
Great point about hotel prices being more competitive because of Airbnbs (similar to taxis v Uber).

Yep, exactly right. See my comment here
Hotels in Japan were so expensive, and while they are conveniently placed near train stations, for 3 people (my wife, son, mother-in-law and I) we'd have to book 2 rooms and hotel rooms are tiny there. 2-3 bedroom townhouses for cheaper than 2 small hotel rooms just make sense.

          • +1

@theguyrules: I had the same issue in Japan, they wouldn't let us have 3 people in 1 room for some reason.

Hotels in Japan were so expensive, and while they are conveniently placed near train stations,

JR Blossom in Tokyo surprised me and was the more enjoyable than high end rooms at Hilton, etc.

    • +1 and I say this a someone who isn't affected by the rental/housing crisis.

The ratio of rental vacancies : short-stay accommodations is 1:4

  • Thanks for the post. Now to look for a holiday destination.

No thanks for Air BNB , full of scam host and bookings

    • I've never had that problem in over 50 bookings that I've made and neither have my friends who regularly use it.
What type of scams have you experienced?

  • Posted this in another thread but haven't got any responses:

    1) Can you use multiple Airbnb cards in one booking?

    2) Can the gift cards cover cleaning fees and Airbnb service fee?

    3) If you book via Qantas (to get Qantas points) can you still pay with these gift cards?

    • +1

yes to all of the above - gift cards function as credit you load onto your account. Just make sure you select the option to redeem said credit when paying (and if it's for a long-term stay where there are instalments, manually update your payment method to select the credit in the days before the next instalment is due).

      • Looks like when you load the gift cards and book a place with instalments it applies the credit before calculating the instalments so you can't use all the gift card balance on the first instalment… anyone know if there is a way to get around this? (guessing you can't)

        • Pay in full

          • +1

@theguyrules: No I want to pay first instalment in gift cards… and then wait for another sale to pay the second instalment

    • +2

I bought 5 x 200 gift cards in the last sale. Loaded them onto my Airbnb account.
Went to Qantas page and booked my stay in Europe, selected pay total amount using Airbnb credit.

      All good.

Looks like you can use Amazon GCs to pay for the AirBnB GCs?

Anyone know if this will void the $30 bonus?

    • +1

I paid with GCs and got email promotional credit will be applied to my account in 24 hours.

      • Yep! did the same :) awesome deal haha

    • I paid with Amazon gift cards and Amazon promotional credit. All good, got an email confirming I'm getting the bonus.

  • No Ulitmate Swap gift card, No deal

  • Hi can i buy multiple $300 giftcards to be entitled multiple $30?

  • +1

Bought 3 gift cards on different accounts on different credit cards. It's been 3 hours and still no gift card in my mailbox and the order is "processing". Don't expect a speedy delivery.

    • Just ordered one to test just now for the card.. code came in instantly using visa cc.

      • Mine (all 3 of them) came after about 7 hours. For one of the accounts Amazon even rang me up to confirm the authenticity of transaction. Credit cards were charged just 5 minutes before the gift cards arrived.
