Participating sites can be found here by ticking 'Participates in Viva Energy promotions'.

How do you get up to 24c off/L?

    • +9

It is by stacking three separate offers at Shell Coles Express:

      1. 4c/L discount from a Coles fuel voucher (which you earn by spending $30 or more in one transaction on eligible items at Coles)

      2. 10c/L discount from this fuel discount offer

      3. 10c/L discount by spending $20 or more on eligible items instore at Shell Coles Express in the same transaction where you pay for your fuel

The only offer available at participating Shell service stations is (2), as offers (1) and (3) are only available at Shell Coles Express.

The fuel discounts wiki outlines other fuel discounts available at Shell Coles Express (and/or participating Shell service stations), but the other discounts are either franchisee discounts or Viva Energy discounts, and neither can be stacked with the 10c/L fuel discount offer in this deal.

EDIT: after seeing this comment, I am not sure whether you can also stack a 5c/L Great Aussie Road Trip voucher with all three offers above to get a 29c/L discount in total.

      • +1

that last one is a bit sus

        • Yeah, I did not expect it to work, because the terms of the 5c/L voucher said it is not supposed to work.

However, strictly speaking, the 5c/L voucher is not a Viva Energy promotion, so there was a chance there was on oversight programming the 5c/L voucher into Shell Coles Express’ POS system and they forgot to only apply either the 5c/L discount or the Viva Energy discount in a given transaction.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: There's also a 4c/L barcode in the Carsales app, under the Account section 🤫

    • I am guessing Coles shopping 4c + 8c if you shop inside the fuel station.

      10 not 8c as mentioned above !

  • Says that the offer ends 17 April 2023 (a Monday). Anyone know if this is includes or excludes the 17th?

  • +6

I can confirm it stacks with the 5c off per litre vouchers. Same deal is good for getting heaps of free coffee.

    • So total 29 cents off ?

      • +1

The 10c does I didn't try the rest. So potentially.

    • Oh wow.
      Great to know
Considering the booklet 5c says it doesn't, on the last line of the picture on your link.
"Only stacks with the 4c Coles $30 shop and spend $20 in-store".or words to that effect.

19c off per litre will do me great.

      • The coffee isn't supposed to go towards coffee credits and it does. It may be staff discretion.

      • -1

Wouldn’t it be 15 cents off? As I imagine you won’t be able to use the Coles 4c docket as well?

    • What? I tried using the 5c off discount today, and it didn’t stack. I was only able to redeem this (10c off) + 4c from my $30 Coles shop. So, total 14c off.

  • Awesome savings!! Thanks OP

  • +5

    I prefer my chopper…

    • +3

Especially as most Shell Express are around $2 per litre currently

    • i thought choppers were grounded

      • nope chopper still works. Unfortunately, no 7-11 close by for me anymore

      • Not mine

  • +8

A good way to get the 10c off is to exchange a SodaStream bottle and purchase something for $1 to get to $20. ie coffee or freddo frog.

    • +2

I do this every 3 months or so

    • +1

I buy $20 worth of toilet paper each time I fill up. I think my female family members eat it, they use so much more than me.

That gives me 10c off. I also stack a 4c voucher from the Linkt app and a 4c Coles voucher to get 18c off.

Not sure if they will all stack with this AFL voucher.

      • +1

As written above, you can only stack one of each of the following offers together at Shell Coles Express:

        1. Coles fuel voucher - the 4c/L discount fuel voucher you earn at Coles

        2. Viva Energy discount - both the 4c/L Linkt discount voucher and the 10c/L AFL Live discount vouchers are classified as Viva Energy discounts, because these discount vouchers are offered by Viva Energy themselves

        3. Instore spend offer - the 10c/L discount for when you spend $20 on toilet paper (and other items in the convenience store)

In other words, you can 1x 4c/L Coles fuel voucher and 1x Viva Energy discount** and the instore spend offer in the same fuel purchase to get a 24c/L discount.

However, someone else confirmed that if you attempt to stack the Linkt discount voucher with the AFL Live discount voucher in the same transaction, the Shell Coles Express checkout will only apply the voucher with biggest discount.

  • Can i stack this with my budget direct discount?

    • +1

      My guess is no.

The AFL Live discount is a discount offer provided by Viva Energy, and so is the Budget Direct offer, Linkt offer, Carsales offer, G’DAY Rewards offer, etc.

Other people have tried to stack the AFL Live discount with Linkt and Carsales and it did not work, so my expectation is that the Budget Direct offer would not work either. Additionally, the terms and conditions of both the AFL Live discount offer and the Budget Direct discount offer say that they cannot be used in conjunction with another discount provided by Viva Energy, so I would not have high expectations of being able to stack them.

There is probably no harm in trying though.

      • +1

I think your guess is correct @WookieMonster, last time I scanned AFL Live discount bar code first which applied, but then when I try scan budget direct bar code but it didn't do anything.

  • Great
Used this the other week but when I checked the app last week it was only showing 4c off
Will cop 10c off my diesel this weekend on the trek back to melb

    • +1

The checkout lady at my Coles Express said it's 10c to celebrate the gather round.

  • any ideas whether this stacks with Carsales shell discount of 8cs per litre?

    • +2

The 8 cents is a once off. 4 cents after that.

      • you are right - I just checked the T&Cs, but does it stack?

        • Not sure.

    • almost certain it doesn't

  • Thanks OP!

  • +2

Can confirm you can't stack this with the Linkt discount - tried it, and it was overridden with the better discount offer

    • +1

I just use Coles 4¢ + Linkt 4¢ regularly at the bottom of the fuel cycle which I can always attain as my hybrid gives me 850km+ to the tank.

  • +2

pretty much the top of the cycle in Melbourne, so you don't want to be filling up if you can avoid it even with the 10c discount

    • Good thing it goes for a week then.

  • Enjoy coles express offers. Nationally they are getting taken over and rebranded to OTR over the next two years.

    South Australians will be familiar

    • The rebranding to OTR is actually dependent on FIRB and ACCC approval of Viva Energy’s proposed takeover of OTR Group, so there is chance it may be stopped (much like how the ACCC in 2017 opposed Woolworths Group’s bid to sell their service stations to BP).

  • Tried using twice at my local which online it states they participate in viva energy promotions. First time got told it didn’t work, second time got told “we were told not to accept this”.

    Any thoughts? ACCC?

  • -4

These fuel discounts should be extended to electricity for EVs

  • My local Shell claimed that the barcode was only for Coles Express. I had to argue that it's also valid at participating Shell branded sites. After a while then they finally gave in and attempted to scan the barcode with their machine.

    • Did it work?

    • I just scanned it myself off my phone screen before scanning my flybuys card at the dedicated flybuys scanner at Sorrento & Warrnambool coles express

  • can we use the carsales one in combo?

    • Nope..just this and 4c flybuys docket + instore shopping discount

  • Does this work again if you claimed form the previous deal?

    • Yes. It’s not once-off use, it can be used multiple times (but just once per day).

      • Previously a new barcode is available from 9am the day following last 10 cent redemption. I used it three times with three different codes. I cannot get a new code for this offer after using 10 cents for the last offer? keeps showing same code. any ideas?

        • So went to use the 10 cent voucher and it says used? managed to use 4 cents though. So odd.

  • Top of the cycle, no good prices in my area, I used the chopper instead.

    • Yeah shame prices just increased in VIC so not as attractive anymore.

  • They want a lot of personal details. Think I’ll stick with my helicopter.

  • +1

Problem is shell servos are always 10 cents more expensive than others servos around where i live so there isn't a saving.

Can someone upload a copy of the discount barcodes please? Cheers

  • +1

Much simpler is Seniors (Respect to our elders past, present, emerging) 5% off gift cards and 4cpl off Rewards at Woolies (= Approx total 14-15 cpl off ) at EG Ampol.

  • +1

Every town i come to Shell are always at least 10 cents more expensive usually 13 to 14 cents dearer.

Currently in my area Shell is the most expensive for diesel at 201.9 the equal cheapest are United and liberty at 177.9 thats 24 cents cheaper without apps and dockets and with no need to buy items in store.

I havent checked recently the in station prices for grocery lines but they use to be more expensive for most items compared to the supermarket so does it add up?

  • +1

My independents are still cheaper, even after the 14c discount.
    1.81 VS 1.99 -0.14 (1.85) VS chopper 1.80

    • According to the 'NSW FuelCheck' app one of the independent stations near me is always cheaper than the rest even after the regular 14c discounts, but they also honour 4c vouchers from supermarkets.

Feels a bit like stealing from them using a Coles or Woolies voucher at an independent business, as I doubt they can benefit from the voucher aside from simply attracting business. Now that ~$2/litre is a reality I wonder what the margins are for retailers.

  • Considering most Coles Express outlets around me are at about $2 a litre atm, I'm better off going to the independents which are as low as $1.70.

The .10 off in store offer is pointless as you are generally paying a higher price than just going to the supermarket. Its really about convenience for some people, but doubt there is any savings to be had with that offer.

  • Coles express the most expensive in town….even the 15c discount, (10c AFL/5c road trip) makes it pretty much break even with some of the others.
Fuel watch email update yesterday, notes Coles express another 2c price increase from today as well

  • My Shell Coles also offered me an AFL cap or shopping bag on top

  • I’ve never tried this before so i’m just trying to figure it out so any help is much appreciated, if i use this afl 10c off offer plus $30 shop at coles 4c offer 14c total does it have to be used at a coles express servo or can i also get the 14c off at a shell servo?

    • +1

You can redeem this AFL Live offer at:

      • Any Shell Coles Express service stations, and

      • Participating Shell service stations (i.e. participating Shell service stations with no Coles Express convenience store).

To see all service stations in your area accepting this AFL Live offer (and any other Viva Energy fuel offers), go to the Shell fuel finder and under the Services & Amenities section, tick Participates in Viva Energy promotions.

The Coles 4c/L fuel voucher is actually a Coles fuel offer (not a Viva Energy fuel offer), and it is only redeemable at Shell Coles Express service stations. It is not redeemable at any Shell service stations with no Coles Express convenience store attached to it.

  • Supposed to be valid on Monday but it was expired when I tried this morning.

    • Yes, I used it last night. Expires 17/04

  • Can still generate the bar code in app even it's supposed to be expired?

    • Can you confirm that it's still working?

      • The app is telling me the AFL Live deal has reverted back to its standard discount offer (4c/L).

I have not tried scanning my AFL Live barcode at a Shell today, because Shell is far too expensive in my area to test this out when stacking gift cards and discount offers at EG Ampol for me can beat the chopper.

  • +1

Really disappointed I missed out on this one. I had a local Coles with 169.9 which would have worked out to 154.9 with the 15c off. Even chopper prices are too much right now, I'll have to keeps my fingers crossed another fuel deal pops up on OzB

    • +1

Tough luck; hopefully you catch one next time. Meanwhile, there's also this deal offering 5c off per L. You can stack it with the 4c off (obtained by spending min. $30 at Coles), for a total of 9c off per L. Not as good as 15c off, but it's something …

I couldn't get the 4c/$30 spend to stack with the 5c Aus Road trip discount….
        Filled up Sunday night

        • What? It should stack. If you read the last line on the 5c voucher, it says that it is stackable with the 4c fuel docket from Coles.

I think you weren't able to use it with this deal (10c off). Apparently, 10c off (this deal) + 4c off (Coles min. $30 spend) + 5c off (Great Aussie Road Trip) don't stack. But you should still be able to stack 4c off and 5c off (total 9c off per L).

          • @Nelumbo: I think what happened was that the commenter came across an oversight on Shell Coles Express' part.

            • The Shell Coles Express checkouts appear to have been programmed to let you stack a Viva Energy promotion with a Great Aussie Road Trip (GART) discount if no Coles fuel voucher (either paper or digital) is presented in the transaction. (This is actually against the terms and conditions of the GART discount, as that is only supposed to be stackable with a Coles fuel voucher and the spend in-store offer.)

            • As soon as you introduce a Coles 4c/L fuel voucher (either paper or digital), it appears that the checkout will then go into a state where it will only let you pick one between a Viva Energy discount and the GART discount, which is the expected behaviour, because the GART discount is not supposed to be stackable with a Viva Energy discount. I think the GART discount was removed by the checkout, because it had a smaller discount than the AFL Live discount; this behaviour is also what happens when you scan two Viva Energy discounts in a transaction if one discount is larger than the other.

My bet is that if you reproduced the commenter's steps now, the AFL Live discount would be automatically removed by the checkout, because that currently has a smaller discount than the GART discount.

I also wonder what would have happened if the commenter set their Coles fuel voucher redemption preference to 8 bonus Flybuys points per litre instead. (The same thing probably would have happened, but who knows!)

            • @WookieMonster: Aah, I see.

You’re an authority when it comes to Fuel discounts and other T&Cs. Glad to have your expertise here on OzBargain ;)

              • @Nelumbo: I would not say I am the authority on here for fuel discounts lol. I mean, I have not purchased fuel from Shell Coles Express in 7 years, because they are too damn expensive for me, even with 10c/L + 4c/L discounts.

I am only piecing together the information provided by other people (e.g. two Viva Energy discounts do not stack, the checkout will pick the larger Viva Energy discount, etc). Maybe that is my value add…

                • @WookieMonster: I believe it was your post/article, but just the other day I read a post/article explaining the difference between EG, EG Ampol and EG Caltex.

I found it quite extensive and interesting, and certainly something I didn’t know about before; which is why I called you an authority :D

P.S. It was your comment on this post. I have it bookmarked for your comment, haha.

  • anyone tried with old barcode?
