Never heard of that place. Looks like an spelling error

It's the capital of Xinjiang, where there are definitely NO ethnic cleansing of Uyghurs happening (according to anyone Chinese).

    • +1

I bet no one without a Chinese passport would be able to get a visa with that flight, that's why it's on sale.

@Lord Fart Bucket: That flight ticket is for everyone, including PRC Residents.

Over 100 million PRC residents travel overseas every year. However the victims of Western propaganda think they knew more about China than Chinese themselves. Meanwhile, XinJiang's GDP has grown 4x since 2010.

      • Why not?

      • +1

No, not the case, as long as you get a visa to China, you can visit there.

        "
Do I Need a Special Visa for Xinjiang?
As of the beginning of 2023…no, you don’t need a “special visa” to enter Xinjiang.

As long as you have a passport and a valid Chinese visa, you will not be asked for any further documentation when you enter Xinjiang.

It doesn’t matter if you arrive at an international border, a train station or an airport, there is no special visa that is required to enter China’s Xinjiang region.
        "

        "
Do I need a special visa or permit for Xinjiang?
Simple answer, no. The Xinjiang Autonomous Region is not like Tibet, where foreigners need a permit to enter. We are free to visit and move around as we please.

What if I'm extremely biased? That's gotta be one of the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard of.

"Please bro visit Xinjiang it's so beautiful bro, there's definitely no ethnic cleansing of Uyghurs, all the Uyghurs here are so happy bro, you'll have so much fun bro"
"Wait, but you have to be unbiased ok? Promise?"

          • +1

@Dr Fruit: You have a bias that is…pro. Does that exclude you?

            • +1

@boretentsu: That's actually what they mean by unbiased. So yes you can go if that's the case.

Someone from here should try and book and see if they can actually have a normal holiday there and report back.

      • Soul brother penitentiary ?

      • Another victim of Western propaganda.

All Muslim countries conducted their own investigations of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, One of the largest inter-governmental bodies in the world, endorsed China for its treatment of Muslim citizens.

        https://hongkongfp.com/2019/03/14/organisation-islamic-coope…

        • Politics and $$. I don't think their main concern is the plight of the Xinjiang Muslims.

          • @Circly: The OIC has a collective population of over 1.8 billion people.

            • Do you mean none of the Muslim countries cares about Muslims? Who started a series of wars with Israel to save Palestine? Who did 911?

            • Does the country that has been boming Middle East for decades cares about Muslims?

            • The Uighur population in 2020 is 12.1 million, about 800,000 higher than in 2015. GDP of XinJiang grew almost 300% from 2010 to 2019. What kind of genocide is it?

            • @Tranquiliser: China has 1.4 billion people do you think they all want to invade Taiwan?

The people that run these organisations or even the CCP themselves have their own agendas. They don't represent the average nobody.

              • @Circly: If the OIC ain't trustable, why make you trust Western media? Did they give you any concrete evidence?

CCP didn't want to invade Taiwan (invade for what?), unless Taiwan goes for independence. Taiwan's territory claim includes Mainland China and Mongol which is written in their constitution. If Taiwan became an independent country, you literally will have two China on the planet. This is the very reason China can't let that happen. The Western media deliberately not tell you this basic fact and their agenda is turning Taiwan to another Ukraine.

You can replace the keyword with food (use google translate), and there will be another few hundred(if not thousands).

@bxlwwc: Negative videos of China get banned by CCP.

            • -1

@Circly: Negative videos of China ain't banned in YouTube.

It has been years. Have anyone seen a video of a concrete evidence of genocide in XinJiang othe than some satelittle photos of high schools? I mean millions of people supposedly have been killed over there. Meanwhile, XinJiang's GDP has grown 4x since 2010.

              • @Tranquiliser: When you realise that in the past 15 years, you’ve pushed millions of Han Chinese into the region.

                1945 - The ethic monitory was 89.5%
                2008 - The ethnic minority was 46.5%
                2023 - Much lower

                • @AircraftFreight: The Uighur population in 2020 is 12.1 million, about 800,000 higher than in 2015.

People relocates themselves to exploit new opportunities. XJ is sparsely populated and some eastern cities in China are over-populated. What do you mean by PUSH? Can you CREATE millions of new jobs, million of tons of food and water supply, electrocity & gas supply, accomodations, out of thin air after pushing million of Han people to XJ?

If Australia had as many ethenic groups as China, you would find that the proportion of Syd & Mel ethic minority groups keeps decreasing but their populations keep increasing.

Why does a Chinese name have umlauts in it?

    • +3

Because it comes from a Mongolic language that uses all those diacritics.

      • -1

Haha is that specific enough or would you like more?

      • -1

Nope, it’s a Turkic language that they speak in Eastern Turkistan. Totally different to the Mongolia language.

        • The name "Ürümqi" comes from the Mongolic Oirat language and means "beautiful pasture". It was originally the name of a small town founded by the Oirat-speaking Mongol Dzungar people.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ürümqi

    • +1

The region is heavily influenced by central Asian culture. I think they practise Islamic religion and their traditional clothing appears to be a mix of Chinese and Middle Eastern influences. I have a few family friends who have a xinjiang family background and their Chinese accent is really interesting.

  • How much for a one - way ticket ?

    • Same price as this return ticket.

  • Kashgar is a great cultural place to visit. I tried to in 2019, but it was hard to get a visa and to travel to

    • it's 1300km from Ürümqi, I would suggest to avoid if visiting Xinjiang for 1st time.

    • You don't need a special visa for Xinjiang. You apply for a generic tourist visa.

  • +1

Does anyone know if I would need a visa if I transit through Urumqi and hop on a flight to Almaty? If so this seems to be a pretty good deal if you want to visit Kazakhstan which is otherwise very awkwardly connected flight-wise.

  • +3

Is there an option to buy a one way ticket?
I'm pretty sure I'd be able to score a free return flight if I go and hang out near the re-education camps carrying a camera.

    • +3

I'm pretty sure I'd be able to score a free return flight

If you're lucky, it might even be organised within a decade.

  • That place usually has very severe dust storms in May.

  • +1

The price a steal… Takes nearly as much to travel to Urumqi from most coastal cities in China.
May is nice around Urumqi. Mid spring with mild weather. Dust storms are mostly March/April.
If you are sick of those copycat Chinese cities, stay around the southern part of the city where the Uygurs live. Or book an extra flight to Kashgar to see the ancient town.

    • Thank you for providing actual information about the place :-)

  • Cheap flights. 17 hours with a short stopover in Guangzhou. Would be much better with a long stopover if you can find one

  • Thats a good Deal .
