  • Looks like a great deal for $350! Can you tell me if it has an SD card slot? I can't find a lot of info on the net as it's a discontinued model.

    • +1

      Same series, different model: www.asusnotebook.com.au/2453_ASUS-U31F-U31F-RX112X-Notebook-…

Almost certain it has a card reader, been standard for many many years.

    • +6

Yes it does have a SD card slot.
SOURCE: Looking at it right now.

      • +2

Sorry, elamo - looking for a more reliable source.
        JK - thanks, dude :)

    • +1

Buy it! it's a really great laptop, small, lightish-weight.

I have this laptop (typing this on it!), but i bought it about 1.5 years ago for $800. So this deal is extremely good.

It has SD slot, ethernet cable slot, 3 usb slots, hdmi, monitor, headphones slot, mic slot.

Just remember, it doesn't have bluetooth.

  • Which store was this from? Seems like a very good deal!

  • +1

    where please!!!

  • +2

Which Store? Its probably not available from DSE online

  • Battery life?

    • 9-10hours claimed by ASUS…

    • +2

I get about 7-8 hours from full charge with office style usage and brightness to max

  • +6

indeed very good deal…. which store???

add $100 to get a SSD + $50 to get 8GB ram and you have very very very powerful laptop for less than $500

    • +2

4gb ram is more than enough for this type of notebook. don't think you would be gaming/video editing much with a 13.3 inch screen and i5 processor

      agree on the SSD

      • You can always attach it to a monitor, and the 460M i5 is OK. Notebookcheck benchmark it at just faster than the Intel Core i7 2637M. I don't know whether this is accurate in practice, but the real problem is the GPU; video encoding works best with a Sandybridge+ integrated GPU, and gaming works best with a discrete GPU (or failing that, an ivybridge or AMD integrated GPU). Upgrading the GPU on this to something decent would be pretty much impossible.

  • Brisbane?

    • +6

Phoned Dick's, only 3 in Warrick and 1 left in Toowoomba for QLD. Absolute bargain though.

      • +1

Toowoomba sold out - only Warwick

  • OP is located in Vic, I'll check my local to find out…

  • argh i need to buy a laptop for my dad (casual browser + excel)
this will probably be enough for him, but cant decide over ivy bridge for longevity

    Ozbargain help me decide!

    • +3

It's for your dad. get what he needs, not what you want.

      • he needs what i described above but doesnt upgrade more than once a decade, hence the longevity issue

    • +2

Your old man would probably prefer something with a bigger screen. I know i would and i'm an old fart . : )

  • nice find, problem where to find a dick smith store :D

  • +1

Great laptop for that price. My only regret is it doesn't have any USB 3.0 or eSATA ports, and no expresscard slot for adding them. But still happy with it.

Battery life I've gotten close to 10hrs from it browsing the web (wifi) and reading PDFs.

Only issue is the 1st gen iGPU isn't that fast, so don't think about gaming on it :-P

  • +1

    No stock in Sydney!

  • +5

Just called DS Nunawading. Was told there's no stock in the whole of Victoria

    • Damn! but thanks for checking..

  • whats the store code? XC7754???

    • +3

At least the OP posted it. You wouldn't have known about this deal if the OP didn't post it in the first place.

      • +2

There no point knowing the deal if you dont know where to get it. I just send an hour on the phone to find out there are no stock at all in Sydney.

        • +11

Right, and who's choice was that? Should the OP have called around every DSE store in the country just to please YOU? No, so get over it, if you want a bargain, atleast be prepared to hunt for it.

        • +1

It'd be a lot easier with more info, but not everything has to be spoonfed.

It's better to know about a possible deal than not know about it at all - someone else could benefit. It's not all about me me me me me.

If after your one hour of calling you found one store with stock and you bought it, would you suddenly be glad the OP posted it? That could be someone else.

    • +2

      samehada: attitude much?

  • +3

Bunbury and Busselton in WA apparently have them.

    • joondalup too..but too far for me!

  • -8

27 positive? does that mean 27 people scored this awesome deal??

      • +7

People give it a positive vote because they see it as a good deal, not necessarily because they bought one.

        • +2

But if there is no stock, it's not really a good deal then is it?

        • +1

thats fair enough. what i'd like to know is how many people actually got this good deal.

  • +2

It's their "Everyday Range" for doing basic tasks. It doesn't seem so long ago that an i5 was something to get excited about.

  • +1

1st Gen i5….get a Lenovo e320 when their regular specials come up.

    • +1

+1, just received E320 bought 2 weeks ago for $466.88 (added 128gb SSD option)

  • +1

This has been my laptop for over a year now. Amazing machine. Great size, 8 hours of legit battery life, enough power for whatever I need to do and I would still pay $900 for it. Recently chucked an ssd in it and I get 9 hours battery life usually. Jump on it!

  • William St, Perth has no stock :(

  • +3

I've got this laptop, they were $719 one year ago as per this deal from dick smith (which I purchased):

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45225

Definately put an SSD in this puppy, and your battery life can go even higher than the rated 10 hours.

I should mention that the 10 hours battery life is when you use an included ASUS utility to enter an "underclock" mode which is all good for web browsing and even playing H264 MKV's since the sandy bridge i5 has GPU accelerated video decoding.

One small issue is that the sticker on the unit and the box says that it has a backlit keyboard, which it does not.

    Its a steal at $350.

  • +4

Joondalup WA has one is stock! let the race begin

    • if theres two..willing to buy one off ya!

  • +5

Does this come with a floppy disk drive

  • I still remember my i3 1st gen cost $1000 2 yrs ago ….

  • I am just wondering if it is possible to connect an external monitor via a HDMI port ?

    • +1

Have you found laptops that don't allow this?

      • older netbooks..macbooks..heaps!

        • please delete

        • wrong post

    • +1

      Yes [edit; it is possible]

    • I am just wondering if it is possible to connect an external monitor via a HDMI port

I have one of these (bought a year or so ago). Mine does not have an HDMI port. It does have an external VGA port for an external monitor.

      • I've got one and mine has a HDMI port! o.O

  • cheap

  • +2

Sorry guys, i posted while i was at the shops and just got home now. It was bought at Dick Smith Dandenong. Don't know if they have anymore but the display model was still there

  • +2

    Acer-timeline-x-as5820tg-524g50mn
    For $349!

    http://penta.com.au/acer/15-laptop/acer-timeline-x-as5820tg-…

What do you think of the specs compared to the Asus?

    • Which Store in Brisbane? Have they got other in store specials?

      • +1

Got it at the one on Queen Street, think it was the last one, you can try and call other shop, this was not on their website

        • +1

Called around, looks like there's none left in Queensland. Thanks for the heads up anyway. The Dick Smith item number is XC8867 if anyone's looking in other states

        • Did the other stores confirm that there is this model for this price but just no stock? If so, I would be calling up stores in NSW.

        • Too bad, I must have been lucky :)
Currently uninstalling all the bloatware… really impressed by the laptop given the price! Will look at putting a SSD and should be good to go

        • any chance you can post the receipt or PM it to me?

        • +2

Here you go, hope you guys find another one, good luck ;)

          https://dl.dropbox.com/u/95017820/acer_as5820tg.jpg

        • @enjunuet - Yep, model exists at that price. GL!

        • Big thanks for that. I will see if I can track this down.

    • Specs of the Acer are better, i5-520M, has a dedicated Radeon 5650
Screen is 15.6", better or worse, depends what you're after

    • If it is anything like the Timeline 3830t which I have, it will be a beast of a machine at a fantastic price. Mine is the best laptop I've used…….

  • Asked the Point Cook, Vic store. They said it's sold out in Victoria

  • @OP: Thanks for sharing with us, you are lucky to get 1.

This is clearance stock so don't keep your hope up since stock will be very limited at only some stores. So if you manage to find one then you are just lucky.

  • must resist…just bought a new laptop last week…must resist!!

  • i dont need this but its pretty cheap, going past DSE tonight.

  • Can anyone advise if this Thinkpad worth $509?

    ThinkPad Edge E320

    http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/deals-and-coupons/laptop-thin…

  • Can anyone advice a store in Mel?

  • I bought the display unit in Dandenong, sorry :(

    • Did they give you further discount?

      • No, its cost price.

  • The laptop also has a sticker on it to say that it has a illuminated keyboard but it doesn't actually have this feature. Go figure. Maybe this is why its being cleared from all stores.

  • +1

If you want to know where there is stock, call up the dick smith head office and ask which stores have stock, probably going to be display models only but still a steal at that price.. good luck!

I got the last one at Top Ryde

  • but for the price it was ok

That's not OK for the price, it's totally awesome! I paid nearly $900 for it last year.

  • just rang these 2 places.
    no stock sunnybank QLD
    sold out mt gravatt QLD

  • Rang them up @MooneePonds just now. Can't find it in their system at all and was told it's a deleted item so don't think any of us are able to pick one up unless it's their display model.

  • (Thanks to my Bro who lives in Toowoomba), I have secured the last one from Warwick Store
They still have the display model but advised its not operational

    • Try and get that for a discount price and send it in for warranty lol
