[eBay Plus] Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet 128GB (3rd Gen) $218.99 Delivered @ Mobileciti eBay

530
PLUSITUPMCSAVE10

Much the same as the deal on the 64GB model. The 128gb version with Ethernet/thread support is also a decent price.

MCSAVE10 can be stacked with PLUSITUP for $30 off. You may have other coupons that you can stack the MCSAVE10 coupon with.

This comment on the previous deal is also worth a read as it compares current and previous generation 4K Apple TVs. Personally, I live in a USB-C household and it is a sin to introduce new devices with obsolete connectors which rules out 2nd gen for me.

I'm keen to try this out in place of a Chromecast with Google TV as

  • it is primarily used with the remote anyway
  • voice recognition for media is flakey
  • there's advertising on the home screen
  • it doesn't work reliably with Google Home
  • it doesn't work reliably casting from phones
  • there's no multi profile support for YouTube and my recommendations have been corrupted as a result

The year is 2023 and ethernet is a premium feature

    • +1

Shh they'll get rid of it like they did the aux in. :(

      • +3

You're holding it wrong/ not brave enough

    • +5

Lol, it's a weird one, though, it's probably almost an enthusiast level feature now.

Outside of tech enthusiasts, almost everyone uses wifi. Outside of cases like streaming games, I've found wifi to be sufficient.

      • +5

Everyone using something rarely translates to it being the best option. People flock to convenience, not quality.

If you can run ethernet, you should. Always. WiFi shouldn't even be thought of as an option if you can cleanly run a cable. It eliminates a weak link in the chain when diagnosing issues such as video streaming issues and ping spikes in online games.

You'd be surprised how much it helps video streaming and gaming in particular. Nearly everyone complains about Kayo being terrible for reliability; but I've never had a single issue with it in my environment. Not once, in years.

WiFi is environment dependent. You can have a great experience, but it depends how good your router is, how good the WiFi chipset is in the device you're using, how your house is built and laid out, and how many rival WiFi networks from your neighbours are in the air, and how many devices you have connected to one router. Bandwidth isn't unlimited in the air. If you're in a dense apartment complex; you're gonna struggle with WiFi.

If you design a product and 90% of your global customers only use Wi-Fi, then the obvious decision is to cater to Wi-Fi.

Only enthusiasts or people with placement close to routers will use Ethernet.

Of course Ethernet is superior, but at some point the market moves on. The latest Wi-Fi standards, in relevant respects, is now as good. For almost all households.

It’s not a question of technical superiority, it’s a question of catering to an ever-diminishing sector of your customer base. Most people will be okay with wifi. In a couple of years, they won’t have a Ethernet model probably. Which makes sense. Just as many households don’t have landline telephones anymore.

EDIT: You replied to a comment saying Ethernet is effectively for enthusiasts now. That comment is correct. You replied to say Ethernet is superior, which is currently also true. So you didn’t reply to the specific comment.

Dropping Ethernet in an atv is not a statement by apple about Wi-Fi being better, but that based on telemetry and other commercial factors, the cost of including it doesn’t provide enough benefit. There may be strategic reasons too.

It CAN also be a shame at the same time, which is what it sounds like you’re trying to say.

@wormarts: I've come to realise more and more, Ozbargain is filled with tech nerds who do not get out much and think the world operates the way they see it i.e. everyone is on linux and is running plex servers and can code and a 4090 gpu is a necessity.

For 95% of Aussies, Wifi is more than adequate.

For those tech nerds, we know Ethernet is better, good for you if you are able to get 1GB/s speeds with your ultra fast NBN to your Apple TV.

    • Stupid isnt it. If I were after another Apple TV - I'd go 2nd Gen 4k 32GB with Ethernet to save some $$$

I've got a 1st gen 4K (and I like the black touch remote) so only would buy if dirt cheap for another TV in the house.

      • I prefer 2023 model and waiting for newer ome

        • Just curious, why do you prefer it?

      A travesty.

It is the removal of the headphone jack all over again.

      A cable is always better.

      • +1

Why? Latest bluetooth can support lossless audio now, it has the bandwidth for it anyway. New wireless headphones have DACs and amps that are tuned specifically for those headphones so they often sound better than your phone's DAC and amp. Even dongles for headphone jacks have the DAC and amp built into the dongle itself rather than using the phone, which makes the headphone jack dongle kind of a modern marvel.

      • +1

I’d rather use my mobile phone to make calls than use a landline.

And in 99% of households, Wi-Fi is fine. Unless you have shorty/old/underpowered routers, or rent out spare rooms in your house to 20 backpackers who video call their family and friends overseas.

    • +1

It's a legacy port. Wifi has kinda caught up, unless you live in a house with stone walls. But those who live in stone houses shouldn't throw wifi too far.

  • Will this 128GB get superseded in the next round at the end of the year? I'm trying to convince myself to take the plunge. Someboooooddddy stop me..

    • buy first think later. There is so much great review on this product. Worst case, just off load to ebay. Apple product is different from others. It carries value. It is like gold coin.

    • What are you using at the moment?

      • xiaomi, chromecast, firestick 4k ultra — firestick seems to be my favourite at the moment. Haven't tried the apple yet, and was an apple user, then changed for years to android, then workplace provides apple phone.. so kinda testing the water out there..

        • +3

Wow, that's quite the range of streaming devices. If you don't have any major issues with the Firestick, then there is no point buying this!

    • -2

I'd wait for a shield deal rather than fork out this sort of money for an atv

      • +3

Then why did you click on this post lol?

        • -1

Why shouldn't i click on this lol? Did i say the atv is a bad product? Again though, if your spending this much imho…

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Because you’re not interested in purchasing one. There’s so many bargains on this site I can’t possibly click on every bargain that I’m not interested in. Nothing to do with whether you think it’s a good product or not. But if you have all the time in your life to click on every single bargain then props to you

            • @illusion99: Have you heard of browsing? Doesn't mean i have to like or purchase every product i see. Sounds like you're a bit of an Apple fanboy.

              • +3

@[Deactivated]: Your original comment is largely useless without any context.

              • @[Deactivated]: When I browse I just look at the headlines. There’s really no additional information I can get from clicking into the post unless I’m really interested in buying it. Sounds like you just clicked on it to post a negative comment. That’s fine. Sounds like you’re a bit of a generic Apple hater

      • Why?

    • Didn't want to disappoint, so as a true OZbargainer I got one..
      Thanks all..

  • If you are in the apple ecosystem you'd get an apple TV (extra cost like everything apple), no point mixing and matching the two too much. Don't think apple to any smart home stuff though.

My GTV works great, WiFi is fine depends on your gear I guess, router location etc. I do have the ethernet adaptor but use wifi now.

  • Does anyone know how to get VPN working on the ATV?

The only reason I’d still prefer my Chromecast…

    • VPN fusion if you have an Asus router that supports it

  • +1

It seems to be cheaper if you have apple gift cards bought from the 15% off promotion.

    • It would be cheaper if you have 15% or more discounted gift card from ANY store that sells this not necessarily just Apple. Eg JB, Good Guys etc

  • OOS

  • +2

This item went out of stock just as I was trying to buy it, must have been the last one and someone must beat me to it. Typical OzB - you snooze, you loose.

    • Yeah, I took too long as well.

  • Thanks for the reports for expired - though, this hasn't quite expired yet. I can still get the offer with a targeted coupon and HGMAY.
