Does it come with a fire extinguisher?

I think the potential was there for any AM5 chip?

        • +1

Pretty sure it's only the X3D variants

@FireRunner: An excerpt from the GN video description:
"This video benchmarks and tests various points of failure for the AMD X3D CPUs in particular, but also just generally AM5 / Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4) CPU failures"

Yes; AMD have formally announced a new AGESA to address this.

Also, its not "that bad" if you're geeky enough to know about the issues, then its really only an extra 15mins of work to set your voltage limits manually "for now".

It should never have happened at all; but its manageable.

      • It's not the CPU that was the issue. Basically Asus BIOS upping the voltage beyond specifications and not having over current protection enabled. Have been using a 7800x3d on a motherboard that seems to be compliant since launch and the voltages stay in check.

        • +3

No, It's the CPU. The Asus board force fed it after failure and it cooked the socket to. So you get to lose the board and the cpu with asus and just the cpu with other board manufacturers.

          • @Nitr0: Well considering the how many 7000X3D CPUs are being sold a week(7800X3D is the 2nd best seller on Amazon.com for example), If the CPU was issue it would be much more wide spread. Only few cases have been reported on Reddit, with an AGESA update released to address it quickly.

Curve Optimizer -30 all cores | bam. Will run like a beast.
    Less wattage than 5800X3D

    • For anyone who doesn't understand undervolting, that's bad advice and is likely to lead to hard to pin-down instability; only the most lucky silicone will achieve that.

-5 is almost guaranteed for all chips.
-10 is VERY common, to then pont that I'd near always suggest that as a starting point.
-15 is starting to get into good silicone.
-20 to -30 is a top binned chip.

Most anecdotes on Reddit on the 7800X3D and 5800X3D suggest -30 CO to be easy values to achieve.
It's the non-X3D variants that are hit and miss…
I personally have a 5800X3D running -30 CO all cores.

      • +1

5800x3d, many (including mine) work at -30 on all cores.

      • I think it's generally accepted that x3d chips use binned ccx's, so -30 on all cores with stability is super common

Looks like they forgot to 'jack' the price.

  • Great deal if you have money to burn or a bulging wallet.

Would hold off IMHO until the AGESA and MB BIOS have all stabilised in terms of sorting out the over volts that was occuring.

Was a good video to watch.

    • Seems like the AGESA release wasn’t tested thoroughly. Bugs around memory speed etc.

  • Would you leave your AM5 PC running while ducking out to the shops?

I was literally a c-hair from building a new 7700x based rig, but now I'm thinking of just running a 5700x instead!

    • +2

Of course, its very power efficient. My PC's stay on 24/7.

Built over a dozen so far, all going strong.

    • Been ruining mine without any issue. This current issue just seems to be a small sample of motherboards, in turn effecting a small sample of CPUs. YouTubers are just trying to milk as much out of it as they can for clicks.
