Cheddar Cashback Being Shutdown? (Update: Confirmed Shutdown)

Looks like the CBA cash back program is being shutdown according to some anonymous sources on @theaussiecorporate on Instagram.

Cash out now before it's too late (if you claimed anything that is).

Merged from Cheddar is now Shutdown

Just saw on the main website.

We started Cheddar to help young Australians get more back from their everyday spending – and we’ve done just that.

Since launching in November 2021, we’ve brought you incredible deals from more than 1,000 of your favourite brands and paid out $2m in cashback and bonuses. It’s been a wild ride but now it’s time to say goodbye and close up Cheddar.

Don’t stress, if you have any available cashback with Cheddar, your cashback is within reach and can be withdrawn at any time up to 31st August 2023. You just won’t be able to make any new purchases using Cheddar.

While we’re sad to be saying goodbye, we’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from customers and brand partners, and all the hard work from our wonderful team over the last two years. We couldn’t have achieved everything we have in that time without your support, so thank you.

If you're having trouble adding your bank details or withdrawing your approved cashback, please access your profile via www.getcheddar.com.au

If you have any questions or require any assistance with accessing your available cashback, we’ll be around to help until 31st August 2023. Please contact us via the Help button in the App, or by e-mailing [email protected].

Once again, we thank you for choosing to shop with Cheddar.

    The Cheddar Team

My question is will pending cashback be paid out?

    • +3

I assumed that is why it says "until 31st August". Would anyone have something that is pending beyond that date? Hope not!

      • +10

Email says it will be approved by tomorrow, even if pending - at least that is my understanding.

"To thank all our customers for their epic support, we will approve all pending cashback transactions and bonuses (where a qualifying transaction has occurred) by 6th May 2023"

      • withdrew my cb on monday… but still no payout! they said next business day processing but it's been 5 business days. i have emailed

    • Unlike the website, the closure notification email included this info:

To thank all our customers for their epic support, we will approve all pending cashback transactions and bonuses (where a qualifying transaction has occurred) by 6th May 2023

    • Just got email saying pending cashback to be paid by 6 May

  • +18

    That is Gouda news, yes?

    • +13

      I beg to disabrie

      • +8

        So cheesy

      • +2

Don't put the mozz-a on us!

      • Colby or not Colby? the question has now be answered by Cheddar.

      • +4

        I couldn't give a edam.

    • +6

That pun is so good I camembert it.

    • +1

      Oh the blues.

  • +3

Should of hired tightass or clear

    • Tightarse would be better

      • +18

Can I quote that out of context?

        • Sure
          .

        • +1

          jv with upvotes???

          • @ninnypoop: You got one too so you won't feel left out…

  • cheddar cheese

  • +11

not surprised. tech wreck is slowly moving across the industry as the cheap money dries up and companies realise they can't throw money at markets / blitzscale any more without it.

    • +7

x15ventures working as intended. Quick start up of innovation within Commbank and if things don't work, shut it down and move to the next one. They don't need every idea to make $100m but if they get one every 10 then they're sitting pretty.

TBH on Cheddar it was nothing special, literally "cashback for GenZ" with some OK deals .

      • +1

yeah have worked with x15 ventures and they are very stringent with the funding

  • +1

    @getcheddarapp

  • +3

Cash out now before it's too late

It should apply to any cashback sites. I often read people saying redeemed $30+ cashback in a Shopback giftcard deal. Don't over buy Boost Mobile SIMs coz the cashbacks are only payable after 2 months.

    • +8

Alternatively, consider cashback a bonus only. Never let it sway your purchasing decisions…

  • +2

How do you withdraw; do you get an OTP?

    I got OTP expired message?

    • +4

Try to withdraw on desktop, that got past the OTP error for me

      • +2

Yep. I put in a support ticket for the same issue and their resolution was to just use the website instead of the app. It's a known issue for them

        • +2

Our team has been working hard to fix this issue so that our customers can withdraw their hard earned cash. So sorry for the inconvenience.
Do you mind making another attempt to link your bank details using Cheddar’s website? Note there are currently high volumes of traffic on Cheddar, so there may be brief moments where the website is down. Rest assured you should now be able to withdraw your cashback.

Please note you can make a withdraw at any time up to 31st August 2023, so there’s still plenty of time to link your details and make a withdrawal. Once requested, payments can take up to 5 business days to be processed.

          Cheers,

  • +2

    tough cheese

  • Have withdrawn cheddar balance. Thanks for the heads up OP.

  • Crap, I have $70 and $50 on a couple of accts that are not clear yet.. goodbye $120?

    • -2

Sounds a little like you were milking Cheddar

      • +8

        Me and the wife..one each
        Pretty legal

  • Is this confirmed ?

    • +1

This news.com.au story seems to say they'll be job cuts at Cheddar:

      https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.news.com.au/finance/busi…

This could either be a slim down of operations or complete closure, but I'd imagine if they were to close it, they might cash out everyone and just wind down operations.

It also has to be noted, that they now would have a client base to use, so part of the business that was established to bring people in may not be as needed, so you could keep costs down by slimming down the organisation.

      • +4

interesting that Cheddar is a part of x15ventures and when I was interviewing for a role in the Cheddar team they were saying that even if the venture doesn't work (since most don't in x15) that you'd just get redeployed elsewhere in x15 or commbank since you're a commbank employee.

I'm guessing most of those redundancies they're referring to are non product/tech and are more on the customer service side of things.

        • Were you going for a tech role? What was the salary offered like?

          • -1

@daleroy1234: Product. And don't feel comfortable sharing the figures, it was very competitive, but the risk of exactly what was happened wasn't worth it.

  • +3

Anyone else's withdrawable balance just disappear? Bought something when they had the $70 bonus promo a few months ago, and now everything seems to have disappeared.

    • Same :(

      • Have you sent then an email? I've not had a response from them yet.

    • Same here

  • +1

So if you have the $70 sign up cashback on a future hotel booking, you can kiss it bye bye?

    • Whisper sweet nothings in its ear first

  • -1

I withdrew that cool startup cheddar deal $'s the second I could, I knew it was going belly up.

It wanted to be a full personal banker, crypto, shopper and discount merchant in one… waaaay too ambitious.

    • +1

      Sounds like Revolut

      • +1

ah yes, you are right… that was another one I snatched a bargain signup deal from and promptly dumped

      • Revolut going good

  • $70 still pending in my account. Fark!!!

    • Same. Now I'm worried lol.

  • +4

Terrible app and cashback tracking, average cashback (besides sign-up bonuses), but customer service were always super personable and helpful. Of course they’re the ones probably getting the shaft.

  • +2

Website is down? All references to cheddar have been removed from the commbank step pay page too.

  • It was a bit hard to cash out when all dough in there was pending .

  • +1

Just got the email that it's closing, they're saying you can withdraw cashback until 31st August.
    Email screenshot

  • +1

ive got pending cashback. is that still OK?

  • +4

Email from them states "To thank all our customers for their epic support, we will approve all pending cashback transactions and bonuses (where a qualifying transaction has occurred) by 6th May 2023"

    • Got the same email on my account.

  • Could we say this is another victim of Ozbargain, where multiple accounts and or only marketing incentives would give it traction.

Guess any startup needs to have an experienced Ozbargainer on their promtions team, to effectively suss out the loopholes

    • +4

No, Cheddar was a product of x15ventures which is funded by Commbank.

They created a product to break into the cashback market but didn't have anything special beyond "Cashrewards for genz" and that's why it flopped, they failed to get market traction.

Products will always have outliers that take advantage of promotions that are made (eg: HelloFresh) but the majority of users who don't do this outweigh those that do. The few people on OZB (myself included) that took advantage of Cheddar with accounts wouldn't even register as a blip compared to the market share they were going for.

    • another victim of Ozbargain

Maybe after everything is settled, Cheddar/x15ventures would release a postmortem on what causes the closing down, and we'll see whether/how much OzBargain is contributing to it.

However cashback is a hard problem especially for startups. I suspect CBA/x15 just might not want to throw in more money to keep it going & compete with Cashrewards / Shopback for marketshare.

      • It wasnt as CinV above says a criticism of Ozbargain, it's actually a compliment to it's reach.

My point really was that throwing freebies without really understanding how it can be gamed, shows a business immaturity.

$70 a sign up might get a lot of sign ups, but after that most deals were the same as you could get from the other cash back sites (but they also offered more) and they already were well established. The CBA saw ANZ and Westpac and wanted a piece of the action with very little depth to the offers

    • Were to try a second account but now it's too late haha

  • +3

No surprises. Tracking was terrible in my short lived experience.

  • Just recvd we are closing email. Quick scan you have to August to withdraw your balances (I only used it one for low value purchase got cashback plus $50 bonus via Cheddar Android app no complaints thanks CBA pls replace with another offer to good to refuse). My one and only use tracking a payment was painless and worked as expected.

    • +1

Yeah I know other people have here have had missed tracking etc but I personally never had any issues and from some of the comments on the sign up deals it seems like they were at least manually adding or approving cashback if you bothered to contact them, unlike CR or SB where the response seems to always be tough luck follow all the steps next time. Then again maybe that's why Cheddar couldn't survive the startup stage lol. Also kudos to them for bulk approving all pending cashbacks by tomorrow, if they don't renege and actually completely follow through. Guess Commbank didn't want to burn up any remaining goodwill.

  • They encourage to withdraw as soon as possible

  • +2

Anyone else lost their entire balance?

    • +2

The balance takes a bit of time to load. Mine was $0.00 but updated to the correct amount after about a minute.
I think the site is getting hammered at the moment.

    • Managed to go to Cashback page under account, should be $73 and it’s showing all $0.00

      • @noelhoi Yep exactly what happend to me too. It was c. $72-73, and is all now $0.00. Happened a few days back.

  • +1

    From the email I received:

    What this means for you:

    – Cheddar will no longer process new purchase transactions after 12pm AEST on 5th May 2023

    – To thank all our customers for their epic support, we will approve all pending cashback transactions and bonuses (where a qualifying transaction has occurred) by 6th May 2023

  • -2

This going to happen one day.

  • +1

The entire site has crashed for me. I was wondering if Cheddar had a minimum withdrawal amount?

    • +1

      No minimum

      • Thanks hamza23 :)

  • +2

Same here I managed to login but cannot go to any sublinks like Cashback/Bank account. Was still waiting for $70 sign up bonus to be cleared.

  • +1

Anybody else waiting for their cashback to be approved? I've still got $130 pending from the 22% cashback on Booking.com deal.

To thank all our customers for their epic support, we will approve all pending cashback transactions and bonuses (where a qualifying transaction has occurred) by 6th May 2023

Really hoping they will honour this

    • I have similar cash back as well but I won't be travel until the end of May so don't think they will allow the cash back yet as I can still cancel anytime 2 days before I arrive.

      • I just submitted cashback claim against it asking them to approve it citing the email they had sent. Fingers crossed

    • Fingers crossed! I have $80.00 pending that I can't withdraw…

    • It most likely will depend on the date of the accommodation.

If they pay you the cashback and then you cancel the accommodation, what then?

      • Nope they already approved it yesterday and I withdrew it immediately

  • +2

It was not fun while it lasted.

  • I was monitoring those accounts every day. Cheddar was giving me white flag vibes weeks ago. Those positive cash flow First Choice purchases were sweet though.

    • +1

I liked the pizzahut 100% cashback deal, multiple transactions.

  • +3

so they're going to delete all our data right?

    • +1

      /Latitude enters the chat

      "Hold my beer!"

      • i don't think cashback sites have to comply with AML legislation, but maybe they do!

    • Eh at least they don't have your licence or address. Or even real names and emails based on all the ozbargainers' multiple accounts lol.

  • App is slow as a dog

  • +4

Anyone's cashback showing $0 even though you should have $$?

  • +2

crap…..made me buy full priced item from Big W thinking it would be free ($70). LOL.

  • Got the reply

    • +1

      Same issue here

      • +1

        Same here
