737 max sure but again, screw that length of flight in a single aisle

    • +4

And with no catering provided for such a long flight.

With the route supposed to be starting up soon and their maxes delivery delayed, apparently they be running this route with some of the ex KLM 737-700s which have lower capacity for a bit as these are the only planes with the range needed that they have. Which also means as long as they haven't oversold, some people who have booked for their early flights might be getting their tickets cancelled.

      • +3

hadn't heard of the -700 situation but i was questioning what the outcome would be with the MAX delays. jesus, would it kill them to introduce a widebody or two?
        actually yes, probably. -700s wouldn't require re-training.

actually on top of that as well… Stopover in cairns DOESN'T have a lounge either… so you're forced to wait it out in the terminal. great service, VA.

for $100 more, you can fly JQ MEL-NRT and you're in J CNS-NRT… meaning a wider seat and a meal. amazing job VA

      • +6

Hi - I thought meals were included in the cost of the ticket, but apparently only tea/coffee/water are for free, everything else is for purchase. I have updated the description. Thanks for mentioning this.

    • +2

2 toilets for 168 passengers in economy. Imagine the queues!

      • gets bad enough on a MEL-BNE flight. there was a 4 person queue at one point, cant imagine what its like for CNS let alone HND!

        • is there a nighttime flight, thats the only chance, by having everyone be asleep.

      • +4

Flew Virgin 737 to Bali recently, there was a permanent queue for the toilets for most of the 6 hour flight, which was cramped and woeful catering

        • +3

Yeah I think CASA should have a minimum toilet number, particularly for flights over 4 hours as with shorter flights, I'd say half the pax will go to the toilet, the others will hold on, but longer flights I'd say 95% will need to use and some people even a couple of times.

This is all due to Virgin being too cheap to wet lease one widebody as when any potential float happens they don't want it to be on their books.

          • -2

@Pcoder: May be the option is to restrict drinks service to the passengers, and tell them to visit toilets before boarding also?

            • @Michael1983: They do and it is absolute hell if you require water, and just causes more woes post flight because you are dehydrated and stressed out haha.

        • I did the same thing to Bali, I thought it was totally fine, the 2 times I went to the toilet I didn't wait more than maybe 3 minutes, I'd definitely do it again.
Japan, however, is much longer, so I'm not so sure.

      • Travelled with our 2yo on a couple of 737s recently, the toilets were the worst part of the flights. Soooo small, trying to do a nappy change was practically impossible by the time you get yourself, kiddo, nappy bag etc squeezed in there. It's definitely put me off flying Virgin for the foreseeable future since that's all they have in their fleet, just not worth the hassle.

  • +13

gold coast to japan, 2 layovers… come on man

    • They want you to get plenty of rest in case of Jet lag.

    • +2

Lol GC to Syd and then Syd to Cairns.. thats just dumb

    • +4

All the recent japan deals have been bs, no way I'm taking my kids on a 30+hour flight for more than the usual cost of a direct flight

    • +3

      Couldn't believe that Virgin😜

      Checked flight from OOL 21/2:
Layover at Melbourne for 10h 50m
      Then
      Layover at Cairns for 2h

Strangely $213 return cheaper than starting in MEL where have to layover!

Check out Jetstar from OOL - 9h DIRECT for $25 more return (plus bags etc) on same date!
Done that Jetstar flight a few times, with just carry on (for 4 weeks in Japan).

      • +2

That Jetstar flight gets real expenssive if you need bags, they have the new fare tier with no option to buy extra bags. But if your a 7kg traveler it's fine, if you want Body pillows it's no good.

        • No way I wanted to endure 13hr of transits on that day plus flight time!
Direct flight is only 9hr with Jetstar!!

Prices have increased to ~$900 return.
Better to wait for a free return flight sale with Jetstar.

        • Travelling light isn't for everyone.
But I enjoy it (not just for the cost savings).

Depends on your type of travel (staying in few locations vs travelling on most of time - like I do), season (lighter bag in warm climate), personal preferences.

Learnt the advantage of travelling light from 2005 3 month trip through UK. Took the 25kg allowed - decided never again!

Much was never or rarely needed. As was travelling on to next destination half the time - was a pain lugging & storing it. (London Bombing unexpectedly meant all luggage lockers were removed everywhere).

Have flown carry-on only on all of my many flights since 2006. Travel up to 9 months per year overseas.

Took 10kg on 3 month trip through Europe 2006 - then the carry-on limit. A much more enjoyable trip. Never thought I should have brought…

Travelled (carry-on only) on so many Jetstar flights to Japan since their first flight from Cairns.

Sometimes even took tent & camping gear when 10kg was limit! I like to explore way beyond the usual cities of Japan!

Don't have any problem meeting their <8kg carry-on. Have had bag weight checked & passed @7.9kg. I use a day pack with waterproof drybag which clips on.

Found ~7kg or 10kg carry-on only is liberating. No waiting for luggage. Got lift with local from airport at Kerry Ireland, - as was one of first out of terminal.
Much easier to get around on travels after arrival.

I usually travel to Japan in Spring or Autumn. Easier travelling in warmer weather - lighter clothes.
Wear jacket, heaviest shoes, & up to 3 layers of clothes onto flight, then get comfortable by putting excess clothes into plastic bag.
Buy essentials (toothpaste etc) at destination.

Any flights from melb - LA ?

  • +5

737 Max - comfort issues aside, I'd still wait a few years before jumping on one of these…

    • +2

they're plenty fine and safe after the FAA went over them with a finetooth comb with even more redundancies required

    • +2

There are almost 1,000 x 737 Max's flying (in service) all over the world now, I wouldn't be worried at this point, they are probably one of the safest aircraft in service today.

    • +1

If you read the accident reports you will see that yes there were system failures, but pilot error was also a leading factor in both accidents which were preventable with the correct actions, not to mention they’ve been back in service incident free for over 2 years now…

      • Sure

    No thanks, busy toilet

  • +1

I just found out about JR ticket price increases later this year. Significant cost increase.

    • How big?

      • +3

        69%
        7 day: JPY 29,650 to JPY 50,000 (69% increase)
        14 day: JPY 47,250 to JPY 80,000 (69% increase)
        21 day: JPY 60,450 to JPY 100,000 (65% increase)

Basically won't make it worth it to many travellers, Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Osaka-Tokyo costs JPY 47,000.

        • +1

          Might be cheaper to fly.
it sucks they removed functionality from hyperdia too

          • +3

@Caped Baldy: You can just buy the shinkansen tickets individually and use IC card for local trains.

Isnt that hard, thats how all the locals do it

        • I'd possibly say some of the regional passes will start to look better.

One of the things I hate about the JR pass is that there is no options to just select a couple of travel days and then use the pass for those days. I always feel like you have to be travelling.

One thing about long distance travel on train in Japan is there is very little incentive to pre purchase tickets for travel as the prices stay the same.

Also note if you travel before the end of January next year, you can still get the cheaper price as the new pricing only starts in October, so you still have the 3 month window after purchasing to use it.

          • @Pcoder: Any cheaper alternatives for a travel for a family of 2 plus 1 kid (4yr) say from Tokyo to Nagoya.. then to Kyoto?

            • +1

@Michael1983: Jetstar is probably you better option, as they do have sales from time to time as low as $600 rtn in recent times, plus they have a service to Kansai international airport (KIX), so you could arrive at Narita and depart out of KIX for no extra cost. Just remember they really only sell one way tickets so you would purchase 1 set of tickets to Japan, then 1 back using KIX rather then Narita

Even adding their bundles which gives you food and luggage will only add about $100 each leg, although what you also can do is maybe just buy one suitcase of luggage going over there, the rest can be carry on and then use the bundles on the way back.

Remember your not going camping, so if you need to buy things like clothing, shoes, toothbrushes and other items like these, they are readily available and most of the time cheaper too.

Cathay pacific would also be good but they haven't had a sale in a while, but through their hub in Hong Kong, they serve heaps of destinations in Japan, from Fukuoka to Sapporo

              • @Pcoder: I'm currently searching for one way to Japan on Cathay (via HK). No Asia Miles redemptions available at all for the latter part of 2023. Discovered that Cathay are only scheduling flights for April and May 2023, i.e., slow re-entry of their international flights

              • @Pcoder: Thanks mate. Yes all cool. Being in Japan 8 times pre covid, but used JR pass only. Just thought may be there is a lifehack using cheaper trains or buses. Really love to see the country at ground level.. Not from the flight altitude:)

                • +1

@Michael1983: Just remember you don't have to be on the shinkansen all the time, and a single ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto is only ¥14,570 (and this is on the Nozomi) plus from what I am reading up on if your kid is under 6, they can travel for free or 50% off after 5 years old.

      • Yuge

    • When will they increase???

      • October 2023…price increase for JR Pass

  • any feedback who took that narrow body flight to JP?

    • +1

If you're talking about Virgin, the first flight on this route isn't until 28 June. In fact, they're still waiting for the new planes to arrive.

  • have been looking for this deal for quite some time now!
    thank you!
    grabbed feb21 - mar6 flight, 13 and 17 hrs flight, MEL - HND
never had an issue with toilets with my 10 fully booked international flights last year haha 😅
maybe just go to toilet before the flight, and on the flight before the food service - or in general lunch and dinner hours, and thats it. and no milk on flight 😅

    • +3

I've had no issue with toilets on the twin aisle planes that are usually usually used for international routes. Virgin are using the little single-aisle 737s that are normally used for domestic flights of a few hours. 2 toilets for the entire economy section.

  • +1

I rather walk than fly Virgin.

  • mostly Feb offerings - in the dead of winter - only attractive to Niseko powder snow skiing enthusiasts ?

year grate - not for me - last time we went to Kyoto in winter we froze our bippies off - it was nasty !

  • after what happened at the beginning of covid I will never recommend using one of these third party booking systems
It's just not worth it when something goes wrong

  • I'd wait until VA actually gets their 737 MAX before booking anything as well as future delivery schedule.

It's looking more and more likely that they won't get their MAX on tine to launch CNS <> HND next month.
