I've got this exact unit. It's been terrific. Upgrade the sanding disc to a velcro option that allows you to change grit on the fly. You stick down the new backing and can easily change from one to the other.

Saves a lot of stuffing about. Doesn't even have to Ryobi… I think I got mine on Ebay or Amazon. 150mm hook and loop adapter.

    • which sanding disc did you use for the velcro please?

      • +3

I don't recall the brand I bought mate, sorry. But looks like Ryobi now sell their own anyway for $12…. https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-150mm-hook-and-loop-conver…

I know I paid at least that buying it elsewhere. Just choose your preferred grit pads (as long as 150mm) and away you go!

Because I don't use it every day, but still wanted flexibility on grit choice (without buying 20+ discs for each of the grits that I'll never use in my life time!), I got this pack:

        Irwin 150mm Mixed Grit Orbital Sanding Disc - 5 Pack (40, 80, 80, 120, 240)
        https://www.bunnings.com.au/irwin-150mm-mixed-grit-orbital-s…

Gives me all the grit choices and the mesh pads themselves last a lot longer than standard sandpaper. I've been very happy, and as a bonus I can use these mesh pads for metal, plastic, or timber. They're awesome.

Most recent jobs I used it to smooth out and level off pvc pipe cuts, and remove/smooth out edges on sawn timber cuts, and also tidied the edge of a chisel (although I didn't want to wear out pad so did most of the harder edge forming with an angle grinder).

This bench grinder and disc combo is one of my favourite tools in the shed. Doesn't get packed away because it's got a small footprint and is just a quick zap for what I need to do then done. Compact enough to not be in the way, but still big enough to be useful.

      Isn't winter coming?

      • Best time for fans to go on sale.

Firepits don't go on sale in summer.

        • +1

Wait - I solely use firepits in winter. You telling me I could be picking up bargains?

      • Could be a rock climber

      I'm not a fan…

I kind of want this just to sharpen pencils.

  • Lots of power tools showing up on ozbargain this week

As opposed to the regular tools all the other times? :D

      I'm looking at jv

  • Is this suitable for refreshing an outdoor merbau decking of roughly 25m2? Or would it be better to hire a bigger machine and don't bother with this?

Never mind, it seems it's a tabletop sander.

    • +1

Merbau being a hardwood; if its beyond what a pressure washer can do, consider it might be reaching the end of its lifespan.

Clean and oil; but inspect for cracks and extreme drying before you invest a lot into it.

Ref my comments about the Aldi sander in the other deal - while I find the Aldi sander just fine, if I had my time again I'd buy something with the format / form factor of this Ryobi. Just takes up less bench space.

  • Grabbed one of these with some vouchers, nice solid unit. No idea why I've never bought one before with all the other tools I have, it's going to be great.

  • Oh I've been wanting a Benchtop belt and disc sander. Been using my Bench Grinder for everything and there's just some things it's not suitable for.

I feel this would be a better option than the Aldi version as it's a continuing product, whereas the Aldi unit is 1 off, and parts may not be available, unless it's a rebadge of something else… And you can find that out.

Here is the equivalent machine from Machinery House

    https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/l105 $319

Almost identical in specs, and shape.

  • this or a bench grinder with linisher?

    • Different tools with different uses.

I prefer to linish by hand since its a more delicate process.

decent review of thw ryobi sander https://youtu.be/rH3xF6NCmoQ

    • Watched this. Has made me second guess my thoughts on pulling the trigger.

  • Hmmmm the 370w Ryobi or the 450w at aldi…

    • I find it’s horses for courses. I have an abbot and Ashby grinder (<500w) which craps all over the $150 bright red no name tool store brand 750w unit which bogs dows at the first sight of pressure. My 1.5kw grinder is probably twice as powerful as the A&A, and my ancient 3 phase 4.5hp is easily 10x the power. I guess what I’m getting at is it depends on the motor quality and efficiency, and I suspect the ryobi would trump the Aldi in these stakes.

  • I want to smoothen some pine for an internal timber screen. Will this be suitable or I need something else?
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/porta-90-x-45mm-2-4m-dar-pine-st…

    • I would not recommend that, no. For your purpose, just some sheets of sand paper and a sanding block would be fine. you could look at a palm sander if you were looking to buy a tool.

Without knowing too much, i may also be looking at spending a little more and grabbing some tas oak/vic ash as opposed for pine for your job.

  • This is more versatile from Ryobi for $129

      Different tools; different uses.

  • Does any one able to compare quality and specs of this vs the ferrex? The ferrex has more power but I wouldnt know if this would make a big difference.

  • This should qualify for free one pass shipping but doesn't, so attracts a $50 shipping fee. I let bunnings know on chat a week ago and they agreed it qualifies for free one pass shipping but they haven't fixed it so I guess they don't intend to. Pick up only for the deal or the chat rep kindly offered that I could ring the store and somehow get them to apply the free shipping. Less stress for me to drive the 40 min round trip in my opinion!
