    Not a chance in hell I'd ever book a flight with Jet Star. Waste of time and money. Might think your getting a deal on cheap plane tickets but once you add up all your losses after they cancel your flight you'll lose way more than you could ever save.

    Example: Organise with your job for holidays, turn up at the airport only to find out your flight is cancelled and the next available is 4 days later which leaves you with 3 days left in your pre booked holiday. Airport parking, accommodation, tickets to shows, car hire = all a pain in the ass to try and get a refund on.

    Never again.

      Fair. But forgive my ignorance, isn't this why you take out travel insurance? Wouldn't the insurance cover all this in this scenario? I get that it depends on the policy and the company, but seems pretty generic expenditures to me when you travel for holidays bar the leave from work

        Insurance can get you a refund for pre-booked expenses, but isn't going to help much with actually getting you there when that's the main point.

          To second this, my leave is worth way more than flights. 1 day leave could pay for an entire flight. Travel insurance is not going to give me 1 days pay for my trouble

          Far from true. Have been in this exact situation. Jumped on the next Qantas flight available and got the whole lot back through travel insurance. Not sure what kind of insurance you have.

        Because we were only trying to get to Adelaide, not the Amazon rainforest. Travel insurance may or may not get you all the money back but it can't replace your pre booked time off work, that's gone and can't be changed in our case.

      Same! Went on a trip to Japan from Brisbane in March. Flight got delayed a whole day we were stuck in Cairns overnight, and as an added bonus our flight home from Seoul to Sydney was also delayed by a whole day. Initially the flight from Seoul to Sydney was at 9pm at Incheon, delayed to 11pm and then 1am. Everyone was on board the plane for another 4 hours, without the doors closing due to a broken flight attendants seat??? Eventually we all had to disembark and go through immigration and all that jazz all over again. We were then transported to nearby hotels and by the time we got to the hotel it was 6am, literally breakfast time at the hotel. The next day our flight was again at 9pm, delayed once again until 11pm but luckily this time we actually ended up leaving. Absolutely shambolic, never again.

      the problem is that there is plenty of examples of the same anecdotal experience also happening with virgin and qantas. im not convinced its any less common with these airlines

        Its because all the airlines here in Aus are stretched in terms of fleets. Any minor issue here and there means no replacement aircraft. Long enough and then the crew don't have the hours left to operate potentially.

        Jetstars 787s probably need a few to go get longer maintenance for a while but their network is pushed. Qantas desparately needs their 787s to bring more capacity back and relaunch some routes that Boeings kept delaying and the a380s are taking longer to get back in service. Virgin is about to get into a huge problem with their Cairns to Haneda route because the MAX isn't being delivered.

        It is. I have a friend who is a taxi driver. Last time I was in Melbourne, I had him drive time to the airport and flight was cancelled while I was in the car.

        He said it happens all the time on Jetstar flights.

    Yeah… Nahh… unless you're flexible to extend or cancel your trip and have free-ish accommodation. It also might be really expensive if you get stranded in places like Singapore, Honolulu…etc.

    We had to extend for an extra day in Singapore… not too bad as luckily my insurance paid that.

        Jetstar cancelled my first flight to Osaka. In their defence, the airport was underwater at the time (Typhoon Jebi), and the bridge connecting the airport to the mainland had been destroyed. But still!!! How dare they.
        Rebooked a year later and return flight was delayed 1 hour.
        I can't even. (ok, all was fine, had a great trip!)

    You should never assume you fly Jetstar on the day you planned. I wouldn't be surprised if travel insurance policies start excluding it in the T&Cs.

    Don't get me wrong - if you don't have to be at work, have a lot of time, emergency money and generally don't care, it's just perfect!

    When there is a significant chance your flight will be cancelled within an hour of boarding potentially costing you in accommodation, more travel, rescheduling if you need to get somewhere on time, then no discount on Jetstar flights can qualify as a 'bargain'.

        I'd personally prefer not to have to find last minute accommodation near the airport late at night when my flight home has been cancelled but I guess everyone's interpretation of 'not much of a problem' differs.

          It sucks that your flight got cancelled and it is understandable that you are angry but what happened to you was bad luck and statistically is in the minority. The vast majority of flights do not get cancelled. More than 9 in every 10 passengers arrive at their destination as and when expected.

            @capslock: I had 2 of the last 3 Jetstar flights cancelled and the other one was delayed by hours. There's plenty of stories like this and a good reason why they're commonly referred to as 'Sh*tstar' (even in the industry). Never again for me, but enjoy your gamble. Hope it takes off!

      I'm with this guy/gal. Not worth the risk.

      I was stuck in Osaka overnight and jetstar didn't cancel the flight until very late into the night after all transport had stopped and didn't promptly arrange a bus to the city or any hotels.

      After a few hours a chartered bus turned up and left half empty best because there was no communication about it's existence. We found a hotel and got a couple hours sleep. Some people slept on the airport floor.

      Then when we get back to Cairns the next day, our domestic transfer was delayed for 4 hours. During the seemingly endless delays I went and nicely asked what the problem was and honestly what was our chances of getting home that day. The jetstar staff member was nice and explained there was a fault and the ground engineers had to consult "boeing in the US to sign off on the replacement part installation". I thought ok. Eventually get on the plane, and notice the safety instructions tell me it's an Airbus plane. The woman point blank lied to me.

      I'll never choose jetstar again whilst there are other practical options

    Does the ACCC cover us if they cancel and do not provide a flight within a reasonable amount of time?

    The following is quoted from the site: “ If that replacement flight is not within a reasonable time, the airline must give the consumer their choice of a different replacement flight or refund. If the consumer had to book a flight with another airline because the first airline had no reasonable replacement flights, they may have a right to reimbursement from the original airline for the cost of that flight.”

    Last year, a flight I was meant to be in from Virgin was cancelled, and rescheduled for more than 24 hours in the future. I was able to book a flight with Qantas and get them to reimburse me even though it cost 3 times the price using this argument.

    yep I'd sooner buy a train ticket to japan rather than a ticket with jetstar. they have cancelled 2/3 of my tickets when flying with them (way before covid times) so never again. I wonder if this is a scheme to get people to bolster their cash flow, cash in on interest and then offer refunds to sell the flights at a more expensive price

        It means you are 2 to 3 times more likely to have your flight cancelled with Jetstar compared with other airlines. These are big numbers in any industry or endeavour.

          Your argument is conditional. A flight has to be cancelled first before your argument even comes into play. For 92.9% of passengers it is not relevant to them that Jetstar is 2 to 3 times more likely to cancel than other airlines.

          For the unlucky few which make up the 7.1% then yes they can say that by choosing Jetstar their odds of a cancellation was 2 to 3 times higher than if they had chosen a different airline.

    I just don’t see the value anymore, for a return ticket to Osaka from Melbourne was $970 with a 24 hour flight there (10 hour stopover in Cairns) and then a 4 hour stopover on the way back, both red eye flights with no food or entertainment included.

    At that point I would rather pay a few hundred more to go with an airline that will be shorter travel time, full service and won’t give me intense anxiety that my trip will be cancelled or delayed every time I fly with them.

    They were barely worth the $600 ish for return for free tbh.

    Buyers beware because it ain't a bargain, it's a gamble. Some people may have all the luck and not get long delays or cancellations but chances are you'll be affected.

    Last time they made my trip 2 days longer than expected, it took just 15 mins for me to collect receipts for hotels, uber and meals and send them in the chat. Was paid without issues in ~8 business days. Also, hotels were more expensive then their "up to $200 AUD / night" guidelines and they still paid it in full

      I had the same smooth process in claiming for a lost pram last year. It took them some time to check the airports for lost item but I was kept updated all the way through. Once it was established the pram could definitely not be located I sent in the receipt and received full reimbursement of the $700 purchase price.

      I had delays for a return trip exceeding 3 hrs each. In Syd airport, if you don't know and don't ask for the meal vouchers, you won't get them. And you have to queue up at the service counter after queuing up to check in. I regretted queuing.
      In Seoul, I didn't bother but it was offered when I checked in. Maybe it's their Syd ops that sucks

    Genuine question for those who have had their Jetstar flights cancelled - are flights departing in a specific period of the day more likely to be cancelled than others? Specifically, has anyone found that Jetstar flights in the morning are more reliable than the rest of the day?

    The last Jetstar flight I caught was cancelled and rescheduled for the next day, where the original flight was departing around 6pm. However as somewhat of a frequent domestic traveller (on Virgin/Qantas), I've observed that as the day goes on the more likely any domestic flight gets delayed/cancelled - just takes one instance of a lengthy onboarding or adverse weather or medical emergency to make the domino pieces start falling.

      Domestically, earlier flights (6am) have less issues but aren't guarantees. By 9am any issues affecting their network for the day will have started manifesting.

      Internationally, roll of the dice. You don't know which 787 on which day (as the planes rotate the routes) will have some issue and then that will have a flow on effect if they take time to repair it for the next routes.

    Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend flying with Jetstar.

    We have had 2 of 2 flights cancelled in the last few months with Jetstar before refusing to fly with them again.

    Jetstar was so generous and offered to book us on the next available flight in only 2 days time.

    Ended up having to pay $500 in the airport for a replacement flight between Sydney and Melbourne.

    Just woke up this morning to yet another Jetstar flight cancellation “due to engineering issues”. My replacement flight offered was 14 hours longer (via another city). I chose a refund (they didn’t refund original booking payment surcharge) and booked Virgin Australia instead. Costs me double as the flight is today. So Jetstar, never again. Cheap and unreliable

      Jetstar have ghost flights each day that they have on intention of flying. They cancel these ghost flights then move the passengers to the other flight that day to fill up the planes.

      They are the Nigerian Scamners of the airline industry

    Jetstar tickets are not worth the paper they are printed on…. The date and time of your booking will never be the time you leave on jetstar.
