this is a great buy for a decent entry, but capable gaming device

  • -1

nice capable entry level for kids, but 3 months warranty is a tad short

    • +6

Agreed, but if you've got know-how less risky than a laptop in the same situation because easier to replace parts.

    • +1

I wouldn't expect much for on a second hard PC

      • I would expect no warranty, or at most 30 days

    • +5

I feel like the warranty on these second hand machines is lip service anyway…
If they've been burn tested and haven't failed the chances of something failing between 3-12 months (if 1yr warranty if what you're wanting) is very very slim.
Plenty of intel 4th gen ex office PCs out in the wild running fine and they're 3 years older.
If they get damaged or whatnot by the kids then thats a different case altogether and wouldn't be covered anyway.

    • These HP's are surprisingly well built and ventilated. But they cheap out on PSUs

      • cant be much worse than the 255w PSUs used in the old 9020 SFF that everyone has been putting low profile GPUs into?

      • These are actually quite decent, just don't expect lots of pcie connectors etc.
Built to last and be efficient

    • You are delusional expecting more than a 3 month warranty on a used gaming PC.

  • +11

I think you are downplaying the capability of this machine. Games from say, the witcher 3 era should run at around 60fps in ultra at 1440p.

    • +5

Yeah I have same CPU, can run anything on 1440p high, with better GPU you could max pretty much anything.

    • +1

Yeah, my i7-7700k with GTX 1080 (one model higher than this 1070) can run all the AAA titles from 2019 and before at 1080P ultra with smooth >60 fps. PC was about $2k in 2017.

My rig absolutely CRUSHES Bloons TD 6

    • -6

      You're dreaming

      • +1

        Witcher 3 came out 2015!

Games like Tomb Raider, Battlefield 4, Metro Last Light, Doom (2016) etc all run really well on it!

    • +1

      Will it run redfall?

  • Anybody care to offer advice to a non-Windows guy - would this machine cope with Hogwarts Legacy okay? On paper the specs seem suitable, but that's not always a reliable guide.

    Hogwarts Legacy minimum specs:
    OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1400 (3.2GHz) or Intel Core i5-6600 (3.3GHz)
    Memory: 16GB of RAM
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 470 (4GB) or Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 (4GB)

Or would you just bite the bullet and get a PS5?

    • this HP Z240 specs are higher than that Hogwarts minimum requirements, so I say: yes!

    • Hogwarts can be a bit of a special case performance wise, it has its issues

It should run fine, and is well past the minimum requirements (edit: but under recommended)

    • +10

could also get an i7 8700 and a gtx 1080 for 100 bucks more https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/256064203359?hash=item3b9e9daa5f…

    • It should run better on this machine that the system in this video:
(Bear in mind, the video may not include parts of the game that tend to perform worse)
      https://youtu.be/GGiQm-yrkEw

    • You need a way better pc - mine with a 5600, 2070 and 32gb ram and ssd still has the occasional stutter and the graphics had to be turned down from ultra

Otherwise ps5 - don’t buy this especially if you are gonna run the game on Linux

    • You'll need better than min specs for sure, would look at 12100f and rx6600+ GPU

Not quite as sharp as this deal but will definitely play all but the latest titles at 1080p!

I got this. The case is pretty small and came with optical drive and SD card reader. Very happy with it and got a tax invoice and 1 year warranty. Seller is also very friendly and helpful.

  • Overkill for office apps like Office 365.

  • Nice, was looking for something for the kids.

Gonna grab a cheap 2TB SSD from this deal as well: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/772659

Great value, but remember this can't be (easily) upgraded to Win11 due to CPU family, lack of TPM chip, etc. (Win10 goes out of support in less than 2 and a half years…)

  • +1

how many 3.5HDD bay does this have?

  • This is better than my current rig. 1070/6600k. God I need to upgrade.

    • +1

      280gtx/2700k

  • Great find. I've been looking for a cheap but not nasty rig to handle Zwift and some older PC games I haven't touched in years.

Bought one. Will report back on how it goes.

  • For the this & the 1080 option (which was linked above) - what would be the rough idle power consumption be like? Thinking of swapping out two separate boxes (Opnsense & Unraid) to move to just one box…

  • Damn, missed it.

    • +1

      shows as 4 available

    • still 1 left now even though it's listed as expired

  • +1

Keep in mind these are used. U dont know how long its been used for. I would never buy this for someone novice. Expect to be called for tech support.

  • +1

These are going to be without OS, right? edit: the DELL listing has: "Software Windows 11 HOME 64 Bit", so never mind!

What's the best/cheapest way to get a Windows for it? And which Windows and version? That DELL i7 8700 GTX 1080 listing suggests Windows 11, but I better make sure. MS has the Home version for $225.00, ouch.

  • +1

Way better than the crap you'd find on FB.

  • This is gone I know but wonder if anyone could recommend a good GPU for professional use on a Z240?

    • +1

Depends entirely on the specific professional work you intend to do.

As a general rule, the best quadro or A series card you can talk your company into paying for.

  • +1

Grabbed the dell one with the 8th gen and 1080
Should make decent enough photo editing pc.

May swap in 2080ti and see how it goes as I really only game at 4k so CPU less of a bottleneck

  • Any PCs about the same for kids?

  • +1

    Thanks @WhySpendMoreForLess !! And Thankyou to @Lonewolf1983 :)

Because even though I missed this deal, I got the Dell one from this seller that is still available after Lonewolf mentioned it. So thanks again to you both or I would not have got the deal on thid PC that I really needed right now because my current PC is very recently stopped working and I need something cheap I can just plug in and go.

I think I actually prefer to pay a little more (for the Dell) because the extra 20% or so in performance that the i7 8700 with 2 extra cores and the GTX 1080 gives is a nice boost for some of the newer games (especially the 6 cores vs 4) and works out about 20% more cost, so it is still a great deal imo.

Anyone interested in it, there still seems like quite a few left.

Also, the Dell comes with Windows 11 installed but I did not want this and I requested they install Windows 10 for me instead and they said no problem. I just had to leave them a note when I went through check out.

I hope this helps anyway still looking for a good deal.

    • +1

Yep it's a bit better performance wise and will last a bit longer with the extra cores
I also liked the full speed usb-c port on the front
      8th gen also supports win11

      • Yep, those extra cores are a big bonus for some extra longevity, but I also noticed some games and apps really beniffited from this right now and run a lot smoother too.

I just watched a benchmark video on YouTube that showed the 8700 is almost on par with a Ryzen 5600, that I was thinking about getting soon, so I was pleasantly surprised this system is going to be similar, and I don't even have to build it myself 😅 That's the part that really helps me right now.

I did not know about USB C, thanks👍 that's good to know.

Good point on the Win 11 support, this is good to have for the future. I need Windows 10 right now but may have to go up to Windows 11 one-day and being able to without fuss is a huge bonus in that case.👍

        • More in line with Ryzen 2700 performance wise
