  • 250/50Mbps @ $59/month.

    TPG FTBB via G.Fast

    • What is FTBB? That's a good price for 250 down NBN

      • Non-nbn fibre to the building product.

  • +1
    Package Min Max Avg
    100Mbps 63.6 110.5 104.3

    My Republic / Superloop

    • Nice Package! More than twice the size of mine.

  • 400/50 currently, Im with launtel though so i can switch to gigabit speeds anytime i like unlike other providers.

    • Laurel ftw. I regularly switch between 250/25 400/50 1000/50 depending on what is needed.

  • +1

50/20Mbps @ $55 per month with Tangerine Telecom.
In regional mid north coast, can stream standard def video (Uni lectures) perfectly fine while my partner is gaming online without noticable lag.

  • TPG HFC 250/25 $79/month forever

  • 50/20

But I'm old enough to have used 14.4K modems so even 1.5 Mbps was a revelation for me.

    • +1

I started with a cheap ($90) 2400bps (2.4K) modem from Dick Smith Electronics! It was this little black box about the size of a deck of cards that plugged into the comms terminal on the back of the PC.

    • +1

Honestly 1.5Mbps was a godsend when it came out. No longer had to wait forever for the page to load and websites weren't as bloated back then anyway. Even YouTube was fine as long as you weren't on a shared connection. The only thing that sucked was torrents.

      • 2002 internet on 1.5Mbps was far, far faster than the internet of today on any connection speed.

Aside from media downloads, web browsing was faster on 56k in 98 than 100mbps is today.

        • Hmmmm a bit of an exaggeration there but I know what you mean.

          • @Ridiculous Panda: Not exaggerating - sure, downloading binaries or media was slow (spend hours grabbing a few MB) but the web had very little bloat and a 56k connection was pretty fast. Now, with all the JS & browser bloat and 200 async requests made, webpages are far slower, and there is always some bottlenecking requests that are slower than your internet speed due to the server/CDN. It's certainly a worse experience IMO.

  • 1000/50 with More Telecom for $104 for 6 months… after those 6 months are up I'll probably move over to Superloop or whoever else has a decent deal at the time.

    • I thought it is for 12 months? (Mine is)

      • Oh so it is! Thanks.

    • Realistically, what speed are you getting with More?

      • +1

I'm getting consistent 930/45 with 2ms latency on wired ethernet.

  • 50/20 via More for $53.90 a month. Speed is sufficient for my needs.

  • 1000/50 plan with Aussie Broadband over HFC - $149 +10 call pack.

Not the cheapest plan (claim 80% of it anyway with WFH), but super impressed with both the comms and Tech Support from them - about to hit 2yrs as a customer and I cannot recommend them enough.

$10 call pack is amazing, can call friends and relatives in Europe and talk for hours.

Since day one, consistently getting ~ 940/48.

    • I’m also a happy customer, or was till I see a lot of these speeds at much cheaper prices. Reliability is key for me which ABB has been. Might shop around a bit more or setup some alerts for bargains on here. Been with them for about 4yrs now

  • A dodo sim through a 5G modem, 1 Mbps down/up, shaped unlimited. I can live with 360p video content.

5G postpaid sim (hotspot) for anything else I need in a hurry.

The less internet and screen time I have, outside of work, the better.

  • +3

Been rocking FTTP for the past 8.5 years. Have had 2 outages - one when I shoved a UPS and broke the fibre, and another that affected the whole POI.
It's cute when people tell me 5G wireless is just as good or better than FTTP NBN.
With my 3ms ping and gigabit (measuring 810mbit right now) for $149 pm, there might be more economical options, but price isn't really the primary metric for me.

  • I get about 40 Mbps but I have never had any issues with speed. I am much more concerned with reliability and drop outs (which is why I really hate streaming).

I'd easily sign up for a 20 Mbps plan if it was working 100% of the time.

Why does anyone need 500+ Mbps?

    • -2

Ego/bragging/status/FIGJAMism/to beat someone else to it/elitism.

The iinet Netflix deals destroyed fair use policy mentality in Australia. Feck you mate, is now the Strayan way

  • +2

50/20 is the best value for a family of 4-5.

  • Why is 400/400 not listed?

  • 500/50 @ $109 with Leaptel

  • Leaptel FTTP 50/20 $59.95/month

  • where's the option for 50/1

  • 467mbps for $84pm

  • Paying $69.95 per month for 250/25, lowest I've ever seen it dip to is 283/24 and off peak is 287/24

    • +1

Deets on the plan and provider please

      • Provider is uniti. As for the plan, you'll have to keep an eye on their plan promos. It was an old promo. They still pop up now and then but rarely.

If you qualify for a free fibre upgrade then tangerine will do a similar price for the same speed.

  • Stuck on FTTN at home i get 60down if I'm lucky, Work can get 90. Paying for 100/20
Can do an upgrade to fiber at work but lots of $$$

    • Not eligible for the free upgrade? Check your address with tangerine on their free fibre upgrade promo and see if you qualify for the free Fttp upgrade.

  • Telstra 5g right? I get much higher speeds though.

  • around 110pm for 250/25 from memory
    Exetel

Paid for it for the FTTP upgrade and will be dropping back soon enough. Don't need the speeds, just the stability. VDSL2 was unreliable to the point I needed backup 4G.

  • +2

1000mbit down, 400mbit up - achieve roughly 850 down and 300 up on a good day via ethernet. $12/day through Launtel.

We're a household of 10 which can be broken into a few categories:

3 oldest use it for online gaming, homeschooling work, youtube (uploading and watching) and the oldest occasionally streams.
3 adults use it for work (me - remote desktop session primarily), photography uploads (wife), netflix (mother in law)
4 toddlers use it for Reading Eggs, various toddler games, youtube, etc.

Then there's some devices which just stream in the background most hours of the day like TV with youtube, amp for music, etc.

How we managed on our 50/9 FTTN connection for so long I'll never know.. Only recently got the FTTN -> FTTP upgrade which was a huge hassle in iteself. Techs in our area seem to be pretty green when it comes to fibre which I guess makes sense as it's not exactly a wealthy area (Gosnells, WA)… it took them 4 techs and 4 attempts to get the connectors setup right in the PCD, each return visit was a 2-3 day wait.

    • +2

      We're a household of 10

It's a wonder you find time for the internet. lol

  • Capped at 100mbps FTTN, thanks to Tony Abbott and the Libs. Would love to get a 500mbs connection, but my area won't see it for over a decade if I'm lucky.

    • -6

the reality is for the majority 100mbps is significantly more than they need. I got a non technical work colleague to go back to 50mbps as she had listened to garbage saying she needed 100mbps or better to be able to stream and browse the internet at the same time. I have 500mbps or sometimes 1000, but only for when I need to copy around VM's or ISO's for work.

  • +2

    50 billion well spent.

In a few years hopefully more people can be on something faster than 1995 technology. Good'ol HFC.

Keep in mind these figures actually include people that stayed on HFC.

    • -3

I'm on HFC with 50/20. It's perfectly fine for my needs. Why spend money when the existing technology does the job?

      • +1

The HFC network required giant piles of money to fix it up to it's current 'stable' state.
For not much more money they could have installed the FTTP network which is future proof.

  • 100/20 @$62.90 with Exetel

  • I own superloop. Elon and I have drinks after work. I am the internet.

  • How quaint to see nerds doing an apendage measuring contest on aussie broadband speed. You should know that your speeds are third world country levels.

  • 160 / 30 tpg 5g

2 into 1 customised Starlink. (Muskovite Edition Series II Platinum)
    666 down/ 124 up.
    - (minus) 0001ms latency
Performs as well on the yacht as it does in the Bentley and Maserati.
( Even when Giselle is gaming with Brad when he's in our Lake Como chalet complex)

    1000/200 @ ~$38/month unlimited.

Includes 10GB phone data + 60 minutes of talk + cable TV.

I could get 2000/500 for ~$65/month, but I am OK with what I have currently.

    • +1

Damn that's not bad. I actually upgraded to the $130 month plan but they basically inserted the modem into my brain so I carry the internet with me whever I go. So I'm a walking Starlink satelite at 2000/500.

    • +1

      With who

  • +1

Where is the dial up option

    • It's in the forum topic that was started in 1993!

      • Back then op was boasting about getting 56kbps

  • 250/25

But was happier with 100/40 but stupid isp no longer offers it.

Really need some more upload when both me and the misses working from home throw in some high quality web cam feeds and uploading a few work files or recordings and it's congested pretty quick.

    • Go Leaptel my dude. They still have it for an ok price.

I can upgrade to FTTP with 250/25 but need the higher upload for the kind of work I do as well and hosting my own VPN service, so stick to 100/40 for now on FTTC. I'd upgrade with the 1000/50 service but dont see it worth for an extra 10Mbps of whats more important to me. :/

    • +1

Join Leaptel, Launtel, Superloop or Aussie BB to get 100/40. If you are on FTTP there is 250/100.

  • Those on speeds over 100mbps, is it worth it? I'm on a 100 plan with around 80mbps consistent download. I stream 4K services, play games online and everything fine. What does the increased mbps actually do?

    • +1

You need it when playing 4K porn on every screen in the house when the wife is out.

      • hahahaha username checks out.

    • +2

My opinion is that if you don't already know you need over 100mbps you probably don't.

Those over 100mbps either have it for two reasons, w**k factor, or they know they're actually hitting their cap pretty consistently.

For example, some of us IT nerds run servers from home which the higher bandwidth can help in many ways.
Another more common example, is working from home, depending on your work you could be downloading/uploading large files to your works/clients systems all day.
Not having to wait for those files to come down or be uploaded, is massive! you only realise what you've been missing until you're on the higher tier. It's like having the file server at your home.
We've all been accustomed to thinking anything we access on the Internet is this thing we have to wait for, but it doesn't have to be.

      • I download a lot of linux ISOs.

        • You mean the high definition surround sound type of Linux ISOs? those are my fav ;)

  • 100/40. I need to upload a lot for work matters so most of the plans with 20up is literally wasting time.

  • 20/2 ~$50pm

  • 99/37 $59.99 - TPG FTTB Non NBN

  • +1

    33.6kbps Alphalink

    • Do they have a local dial in phone number?

      • Don’t forget to disable call waiting before you connect though

  • I read that GimpCo wants to force heavier users on 50 Mbps plans to upgrade to more expensive plans:( They claim 33% of people are heavy users (they probably define heavy as more than 100GB/month, which includes me).

Over time, internet access should be getting faster AND cheaper. But in this nightmare country, prices just keep going up. Look at New Zealand to see what internet done right looks like.

    • +1

Why is Australia a 'nightmare' country? New Zealand may have good internet but in many other areas, they're f**king hopeless - borderline third world. There's reasons why so many of their people move here.

  • 100/20 $74.95 Superloop

  • Who are you with OP? 5G?

    • Probably Telstra 5G Home Internet

  • +2

25/10 cause the maximum line speed is 30/8

I thank Malcolm and Tony daily for spending my taxpayer dollars so wisely, nobody could need or want anything faster and Spending thousands of dollars to upgrade my ADSL2+ speed from 22mbps to 30mbps was clearly a good investment in the future of the country cause they're such good economic managers, just ask them! /s

  • +1

I absolutely detest that standard "fast" speeds on NBN went from 100/40 to 100/20 and a lot of ISPs no longer provide residential 100/40 anymore. Australia is going backwards.

  • 100/20 with ABB for $99

Modem telling me I'm currently getting 120/22.6. My house is probably less than 50m from the node.

Very happy with what I have. ABB is a great provider and I've had no desire to change that. As I live semi-rural, it will be a while before I'll get a fibre upgrade.

  • +1

Im on 25/10. I play mulitplayer games and stream 4k netflix with no problems. However only 2 people in the house.

I was on 100/20 NBN and have been dropping my speed tiers down to see if i suffer any issues with the lower tier speed and i havent noticed much of a performance issue enough to warrant upgrading the plan.

  • 50/20 unlimited FTTP Superloop $65.

Had a free speed upgrade to 1000/40 for 6mths but no real world difference for home and work for the family.

    • +2

most people won't see any difference. A lot are deluded and think it means their online games will be faster or that their pings will be magically better. If you are dragging around large files from work then you will see a difference, but for streaming media, browsing web or gaming it won't make any difference for the average household.

  • +1

1000/50 HFC on Launtel. I get around 930/45 actual most of the time. In my work I do a lot of uploading while downloading and do shape my connection using OPNsense CoDel queues to avoid bufferbloat.

Interestingly while I had no issues with Aussie or Superloop or Internode on FTTB/P, Aussie HFC was very unreliable and would random drop packets during my work Zoom calls. Assumed it was nbn's fault/the nature of losing the NBN lottery with HFC and would affect all RSPs (and Aussie claimed as much) but switching to Launtel immediately made them disappear.

$4.60/day but I do drop the speed/price occasionally when going away. Cannot be bothered playing musical chairs with time-limited RSP deals given the historical HFC issues.
