Get $20 Woolworths Gift Card with New SIM and $29/$49 Recharge

710

Woolworths are running a promotion where if you buy and recharge a new sim with $29/$49, they mail you a $20 Gift card. This GC can be redeemed at any of the Woolworths group stores i.e. Woolworths supermarkets, BIG W, Dan Murphy's, BWS, Caltex Woolworths co-branded outlets and Masters Home Improvement stores.

Don't forget the 10% discount for using everyday rewards card. Which basically means

$31 - 10% - $20 GC = $7.9 for 5GB data, $500 included value and 45 day expiry or
$51 - 10% -20 GC = $25.90 for 5GB data, $1000 included value and 45 day expiry
Personally for me $29 recharge is much better value.

Also I believe we have had enough discussions on 1Mb data increments over here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/56674 and can conclude that it is not as bad as it sounds.

  • Also F.A.Q's on their website seem to do a good job of clarifying all the details.
    http://woolworthsmobile.com.au/woolworths-mobile-20-gift-car…

  • what is the 10% discount offer for Everyday Reward?

    • Just scan your rewards card to get 10% discount, its sort of loyalty discount.

  • +5

Wow, this could be the site of next OzBargain flash mob. But I have to say that $500 value is BS. It's actually $250 for most people. The other $250 can only be used to call other Optus subscribers.

    • +1

Not sure I get your logic. Why wouldn't someone using a mobile on the Optus network be calling other people also on the Optus network?

      • +4

I think the point he is making is that a portion of the credit has limited access.. the amount that you might find it accessible or of value is determined by factors outside of your control.

        • +4

Yeah and remember your callee has to be on Optus, a MVNO like Amaysim doesn't qualify. Last time I had a Woolies SIM I was not able to use a single minute of this Optus time. Even a friend on Virgin wasn't considered Optus.

    • +1

it's not so much $500 value as 2x$250, which the way Optus slices it, is not the same.

  • +4

I wish they had the half price offer on recharges again.

    • +1

I guess they learnt their lesson from last promo.

      • Seems so - appear to need to use on new SIM.
I want to use on my existing SIM … which is what i did with the half price deal that ended in Jan (extended from Dec).

  • So, if a person has an unlocked mobile that has the capability of being used as a wifi hotspot, then this is the same as getting a 5MB stick, except for 45 days? Can anyone confirm this?

    • +1

I'm currently using Woolworths Mobile in my Galaxy Nexus tethered to my laptop. No problems.

Good timing on this deal. I'm just running out of recharge slips from last year's deal.

EDIT: Just realized it's for new sims only. Still a good deal.

      • +2

Have posted further down but just a note from their FAQ.

Q: I’m a current Woolworths mobile customer. Can I still get this offer?
A: No. This offer is only for new customers who connect and make their first recharge during the promotion period.

    • Phones locked on Optus should also work OK with this SIM as WOW SIM uses their network.

However tethering breaches the T&C's but, umm, i know a friend of a friend who, umm, assures me that they've been doing it since August last year without a hiccup.

      • +2

I've tethered fine. Nobody really checks. This is for Android. iPhones are a different issue since Apple made it such that the ISP can control the tethering.

      • I keep an android phone handy just for tethering on the move from this plan.

wondering if I need a new voucher or could you activate one of the half-price sims and vouchers ($12.60) and receive the $20?

        • +1

I reckon the voucher would have to be recorded as purchased during the promotional period.

        • I suspect you're right about that. They'd pick the people to SMS based on the recharge purchases combined with SIM activations.

  • I still half price recharges from last year but have never activated any sims with woolworths yet. i wonder if i activate a sim and use last years recharge voucher now before nov 2 if would qualify for the $20 gift card or not? can you also get more then 1 gift card if sims are activated in different family member names but at the same address?

    • So you're asking if you can save $2 (-10%) by using one of your SIMs and then save $9 (-10%) by using one of your vouchers? I'd be interested to know too.

PS: I got a micro SIM last half-price offer which I didn't use as I only wanted the recharge voucher. Anybody know if I can go into a store and exchange it for a regular SIM for this offer? It has my details against it, they took them down at the register.

    • Yeah, i've got a bunch of them too, but they mostly expire on 1 September 2012 (some 1 October 2012).

This deal no use to me: need to use new SIM, and they need an address to post the gift card to, and it's a once-off.

Those with pre-paid deals are notorious for putting the SIM/phone in the name of their pet goldfish. My fish is called Harold.

      • I think as long as you activate before the SIM expires it will be fine, provided you indeed can use a SIM purchased before this offer. Nothing actually expires in the SIM, just the ICCID is expired in their database.

    • The conditions don't state that you have to buy the sim or recharge now to take advantage of the offer - be a new customer, activate a new sim within the specified dates and do a recharge. No reason it shouldn't work.

EDIT The only part where they could argue the point would be that they do say to buy and activate a new sim, so for the sake of $2, it might be a wise precaution. There's nothing whatsoever that states that the recharge has to be newly bought.

      • +3

yes i can confirm that you will still qualify for the $20 gift card if you use an old sim and voucher purchased before this deal started privided you havent got any woolworths mobile service already in your name. I got the sms 24hrs after activating an old sim and topping up an old voucher. can anyone confirm if you can claim more then 1 gift card per household addresses if other family members take up this offer activate the sim in a different names?

  • what if i never end my session for the 3g connection? does it mean i get my full 5gb?!

    • Don't really get the question.

Relax about the 1M increment thing - you'll get your full 5G unless you do something really strange like somehow force a repeated connect/disconnect sequence.

BTW Optus dongle's charge in 10M increments. So if you connect/disconnect for just a moment, bang goes 10M.

    • +1

I leave my Android data connected all month for email and calendar sync - plus use web, maps, tethering and hotspot to netbook from time to time. I struggle to use up even 1GB of my 5GB quota over the 45 day period.

  • Q: I’m a current Woolworths mobile customer. Can I still get this offer?
A: No. This offer is only for new customers who connect and make their first recharge during the promotion period.

    • So what this translates to is, if you took advantage of the half price offer, there's no love for you here. I'm thinking that probably makes 95 per cent of us here inelligible. lol

    • However I wonder if some people who still have vouchers from last year can do what is asked here:

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/77343#comment-987334

and retroactively get a recharge for $9 instead of $14.50 (less 10% with EDR). You'd still need a new SIM identity though.

  • When considering this offer please remember the high prices charged:

National voice calls 89¢ per/min (1 minute increments)
    Flagfall (per call) 39¢
    Standard national SMS 29¢
    Photo Messaging (MMS) 50¢

So you can consider it as roughly 195 guaranteed minutes (assuming up to 1 minute calls to non-Optus). If you want more than that you may find competitors cheaper as they offer unlimited calls.

    • Also consider that its a 45 day expiry, so probably better value for the medium caller user.

    • Also get a load of the ridiculously high international rates:

      http://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=true…

    • put it on tablet, and get the 5GB plus 45 days expiry. Forget the $500 credit..
      it is still a bargain.
I've been using this for my galaxy tab and tether it for my laptop for more than 6 month.
It's cheaper than my previous Vodafail,
I agree it's quite expensive for calls, but for the internet, it's a steal.

I'm planning to get one for my galaxy tab and get rid the old sim.

      • Can you stick these directly in the tab and have it work? I was thinking that they'd have some sort of restriction on that since tethering is apparently not allowed.

        • definitely yes, a mate put it in his IPAD3 and works well.
I've been been using it for tethering for more than 6 months, and still running fine.

  • Good find
I just my last promotion recharge. The 5G data is great where I live
    + vote from me

  • I used it once when the credit expired in 30 days instead of the current 45 days. That was in late July - early Aug this year. Certainly great value if you missed out 2-3 weeks ago's the SureDeal (as per alert in OzBargain) for $2 SIM with UNLIMITED Oz calls & text.

When my brother-in-law uses it on his smart phone (not aware of his brand/model), it seems OK. But when I used the SAME simm card on my old but working Motorola Raz flip phone, the line quality is terrible.

Not sure whether it's my working 2G Motorola phone or their 2nd/3rd tier of Optus service line that caused it.

    • +1

Woolies is really Optus, not a MVNO, even the billing goes to the Optus website. More likely 2G wasn't well supported where you used it.

  • Been using Woolies mobile since the last deal - purchased heaps of vouchers for around a tenner each. Its just optus so if their reception is good in your area go for it. For someone like me who uses heaps of data and texts but only rings on ocassion I have been very happy.

  • My local woolies has heaps of new cards that expire on september 1st 2012

Maybe they are trying to clear that lot

Also if somebody gets one, please advise what the voucher expiry date is

    thank you

    • I don't understand, why would the voucher expiry date be any different from a normal recharge voucher? You don't have to buy it at the same time as the SIM. In fact you can recharge with plastic online. It looks like anybody who buys a SIM and recharges will be automatically offered the gift card by SMS. Essentially it's a $9 (-10% with EDR) honeymoon offer for new signups.

    • Quite alot of sim cards with 1 June 2013 expiry in Woolworths Town Hall, Sydney.

  • Hi, would it work if I use this Woolworth sim card in my unlocked Telstra Mobile Broadband modem MF30?

I am running out of Telstra data credit and I was wondering if I can use this 5gig data on my modem?

    Thanks

  • maybe

  • Q. What is the promotional period?
A: The promotion period runs from Monday 13 August 2012 to Friday 2 November 2012.

Aha! the vouchers we got a few months ago when the cost was around $12.60? [with rewards card]expire on november 1 2012.

Hmmm, will be interesting to see the expiry date on the next lot of vouchers, and the ones that will be issued now for this promo.

    • But you can't save the vouchers for use past Nov 2 with this offer, unlike the previous one. They've wised up. Instead of giving you a discount up front, they give you a one-time rebate (gift card), but only up to Nov 2. And what's more the rebate has to be spent in Woolies stores, servos, etc.

  • can anyone tell me if these sim cards can be used in a mobile wifi device or a 3g usb stick ??????

    • They're just normal Woolies/Optus SIMs. If you have been able to use those SIMs there, then yes.

    • definitely yes, I tried once. as long as u can set the correct APN for the modem.

  • What is the latest date you can start using one of these and still get 45 days? Is it 45 days from 2 November?

    • The latest you can recharge and get the rebate is Nov 2, then you have 45 days of use after that.

  • -1

Got one more recharge left from the $12.60 for 45 days deal, hard to top.
    Might consider Red Bull next - 15 months for $365 (5gb a month,unlimited calls/sms)
    Equates to $24.33 a month.
    http://www.redbullmobile.com.au/pre-paid/sim-packs/access-36…

  • Damn, just activated my sim 4 days ago. Tried reaching them about my issue at 1800 174 215 but it just rings out! I want GC too :(

  • will this work for Blackberry?

    • Blackberry browser? Unlikely.

  • how much better is the optus network compared to vodafone? e.g. reception, 3g internet speed.

  • So, is this 1 per customer?

    • @ Lucky
buy as many as you like BUT

      1. restricted to 1 activation per customer
      2. of course if you have a family and are happy for them to activate in separate
Names ie: john smith, mary smith etc… you get around that.
  • which is the correct or best apn to use : yesinternet or just internet without the yes ?

    • APN - yesinternet

  • Recieved my voucher yesterday in the post; about 19 days after purchasing the sim card, 14 days after activating it.
