GearWrench 80948 76pce 1/4" & 3/8" Drive SAE/Metric 12 Point Standard & Deep Socket Mechanics Tool Set $99 Del'd @ Sydney Tools

110

I got the ToolPro deep socket set I linked in this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/772606 which I'm going to return because this one is better, and a lot cheaper.

I have lots of Greawrench spanners and ratchets, but not a socket set. And I don't have 12-point deep sockets which can come in handy.

  • The Toolpro-X I have are 6 point, which is better, more contact with the side rather than edges of the nut ……

The gearwrench is 12 point but you get 1/4" and 3/8" vs toolpro-x where the 1/4 and 3/8 are separate sets so more $$$, almost double actually ….

I haven't broken a toolpro, or Gearwrench socket , both are CR-V, but $99 for 1/4 and 3/8" std and deep sockets is a good price …..

    • I have plenty of 6-point everything, in various brands. Yes, I prefer 6-point, but sometimes you need a 12.

I also have a ToolPro X 3/8" set and it's great, I can't really fault it. The link for the deep socket set in the other post is not an X set.

    • Wouldn't mind a 6 point set - are they also on sale?

EDIT: Just noticed that brand is the supercheap auto brand - hows the quality ?

I got this for about $90 on sale. The X series is a big step up from the regular ToolPro

Here's a 6-point option: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/772606 no deep 1/2" sockets, but there's also more stuff and arguably a better brand. Also double the price.

      • the toolpro-x is great, seems same as kinchrome lok-on 6-point, i’d say sane sockets under different brand when you look at design and finish, supposedly will grip 80% rounded hex nuts …. though i haven’t found any that are rounded to try ….but they are double the price of the gearwrench ….

  • I’ve been holding out for a set for just general use, would this be a good pick up? Just for around the house, kids bikes and toys, light car maintenance etc.

  • I'd call this a socket set rather than a tool set.

    • +1

I just copy and pasted from the website

  • Bought this one last year for same price. Still going well. Only negative side is, it’s does not gas quick release button. You have to pull the socket out.

    • Just use a different ratchet that does

  • Spark plug socket?

    • Don't think those are typically included with socket sets.

    • has deep sockets so can use on spark plugs but because it doesn’t have the rubber retainer like specific spark plug socket you will have to lift spark plug out with fingers

  • Bought this set last week and the very first thing I did was break the head off the bolt from overtightening (not on purpose).

    So…the tools work!

  • Shame 34 of the sockets are imperial, for what I do would never use the SAE sockets.
Gave my SAE tools to family member as had no use for them, doubt I ever would.
Have 1/4 and 3/8 Metric only GearWrench sockets sets, and they have been awesome.

    • thought the same way about. same as i still have from 30 years ago , but i wonder if we start seeing usa made cars in australia if they will be imperial or metric …. usa the sanctuary for sae fasteners …..

      • Did some googling and all new US made cars have metric fasteners.
