Neg is to draw attention to the following.

    Does NOT include stand.

    • What I just bought it without reading!!!!

      • +1

        just hang them up

    • +2

Fair enough, I did not notice that!

Personally I've got a box full of single monitor stands that I'll be glad not to be adding to, so this is a plus!

      • Same. My Philips stand is collecting dust on the floor.

        • +2

          May I have it?

Another small warning for purchasing these monitors is that while they come with a warranty, it's strictly return-to-seller at the buyer's cost.

Given the size and weight of these chonky monitors, the cost of packing one properly and sending it back to Brisbane can easily be more than the refund, depending where you live. Ask me how I know? <sad sad face>

      • +1

I doubt that is legal under the ACL but perhaps there are gotchas for refurbs?

        • +1

Warranty conditions apply to businesses selling second-hand goods. Private sales of course are not.

        https://www.accc.gov.au/business/problem-with-a-product-or-s…

        Return costs

If the business confirms that the product does have a problem, it must reimburse the consumer for any reasonable return costs they have already paid.

Consumers should keep receipts for postage or transport costs so that they can be repaid by the business.

          Thanks, @Punkboy and @HomeAlone

I may have misunderstood their policy then.

          Their website warranty page states:

Australian Computer Traders offers a Return-to-Base Warranty with all our items. This means that you are responsible for returning the Items covered by Warranty to our Brisbane office at your expense. (Emphasis is mine.)

          But further down it adds:

Upon completion of your Warranty Claim, Australian Computer Traders will contact you for the return of the item and/or offer a refund/credit. Return shipping costs apply.

Two of us took that last bit to mean that the buyer also has to pay for the item to be shipped back to themselves from the seller. But now I'm wondering if we've misunderstood that. At best, it's unclear.

@surethang: To clarify, this is all a bit moot now. I purchased the monitor on behalf of another person, and he really doesn't trust the seller to do the right thing. He just doesn't want anything to do with them. I don't blame him because of the way they went about things.

First, he purchased one of these Philips monitors from them which was being sold as a "new" product, but they sent him one that was clearly used. They asked if he wanted to keep the second-hand monitor, offering him a partial refund. Their refund was so tiny, it meant that the total price he paid for the monitor would have been greater than the price they had been selling the used monitors for. So it meant that not only did they send him the wrong product, they then tried to correct their mistake by ripping him off.

There were then a lot of back-and-forth emails with new offers in very small increments. But in the meantime, the seller twice got additional batches of the new monitors, and sold them quickly to other buyers. Despite my colleague asking for a new replacement product several times and them having stock, they never offered to send him the new monitor that he had originally attempted to purchase. They simply weren't interested in doing the right thing by him.

So I understand why he's reluctant to risk paying a few hundred dollars in transport costs and rely on their them to do the right thing by him now, knowing it would cost them significantly to do so. Nothing he's seen to date indicates that's how they do business.

@surethang: That's interesting as my experience was very different.

I ordered one of these a while back and it was faulty with a green vertical line down the screen. I contacted the seller, sent some pictures, and was given a full refund immediately.

I must have caught them on a good day

              • @Richocho: Yeah, from what I've read, the seller seems to be good about dead-on-arrival refunds for these monitors. Am I right in assuming that you didn't have to send the monitor back? That's the big extra expense that the seller seems to be avoiding here.

For my colleague, he would have had to send the incorrectly supplied used monitor back to the seller at their cost. Then the seller would have had to send him the new monitor that he originally order. Then the seller still has to sell and transport that used monitor yet again. All that adds up to huge costs for the seller and no doubt a decent loss for them. Still, it was their mistake, and that's no reason to try to screw a customer over multiple times.

In fairness, I've recommended this seller a lot to people in the past. Obviously now it's going to be caveat emptor.

                • @surethang: That's right, they said to just ditch it.

Different situations I guess. I didn't actaully realise they also sold 'new' versions.

          • @surethang: I sent those warrenty clauses to my previous flatmate who was a legal boffin for consumer affairs vic. Her reply was 'Very dodgy. Avoid!'

      • Ebay Plus provides some protection, though you are buying refurb/second hand for ~140. Cant expect the world.

        • EBay Plus protection couldn't be used due to other circumstances.

though you are buying refurb/second hand for ~140

Monitor was meant to be new and price was over $200

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/746126

          Cant expect the world.

          Shouldn't Australian law be expected?

          • @surethang: I think you are blurring your experience with this post - for your friends purchase. Ebay Plus / non plus should have sufficed - why couldn't they be used?

I'm sure you have access to google, second hand / refurb goods aren't afforded the generous consumer guarantees.

            • @punkman:

… second hand / refurb goods aren't afforded the generous consumer guarantees

              https://www.accc.gov.au/system/files/Consumer%20guarantees%2…

The consumer guarantees apply whether the goods are new, ‘seconds’ or second-hand.

              • @surethang: "Second-hand goods are also covered by the guarantee, but age, price and condition must be taken
                into account."

I see this as it is delivered and faulty either on delivery or in the first 2-3 months you get to return. What do you see this guarantee as?

I ask again, why did ebay plus/non-plus not remedy your issue?

                • +1

@punkman: Dad, why are you blaming the victim? He got a broken monitor and it should be covered by warranty offered by the seller and or ACL
